You sure do have a way to hold such high standards to the things that you don't like, yet ignoring the Clevo rubbish build quality that is topped by even a $100 Chrome book.

The question is, where has Clevo been in all of this? Check mate.

Also, I don't judge laptops based on out of the box performance. We all know that these things need work. It's not some big secret.

The build quality is important for a lot of people. Buying a Toys R Us plastic like your Clevo and paying thousands for that, while being OKAY with it is what is in question due to you're one 'sidedness' of bashing other brands, yet ignoring the bigger issues of the system that you own.

What can your laptop do in realistic terms that other high end gaming laptops can't? Excluding meaningless bench numbers, which are not even that far off anyway to even come remotely close to any bragging rights.

    :)

The lists from a lot of these companies are very subjective and to be taken with a grain of salt as they are just opinions.

A properly tuned / repasted machine like a MSI/ASUS/AW/CLEVO (bga's) could destroy those stock ones on the list.

This is why I never put any value in comparing stock, out of the box numbers as we all know they are all rubbish.

Cars at the track don't go there in hopes to achieve good numbers stock and foolishly go up against modded cars expecting to win.... the same thing goes for comparing stock gimped machines and expecting some miracle.

Update; I'm on the phone right now and TapaTalk is freaking out... hence the individual posts.

I respect your opinions very much and you are a level headed person. I'm just not willing to settle for anything they have on offer. It's not good enough and never will be. I will never accept soldered CPU and GPU on anything that costs me more than $500. It makes something otherwise good or OK into something I am unable to accept. I have accepted that they do not give a damn about customers like me and I am simply returning the favor by dismissing their brand... lock, stock and barrel. I am sincere in my belief that everything they sell is rubbish and there is no way to change that opinion. You can call that surrender if it feels right to you. To me it is more like not stooping to their level. I'm way better than that and plan to stay that way. Thus, there is no incentive to work with them. There never will be.

As you know, I love hyperbole as much as you do. I think you know I would not take a desktop on vacation or a business trip, LOL. Only an idiot would do that. But, I will admit that it is a humorous notion and makes the point that desktops are not portable. I'll just have to do without and use something crappy when I travel. That will make getting home all the sweeter.

I have to say, the Alienware M17xR2, M18xR1/R2, Alienware 17 and Alienware 18 are unmatched in build quality. I am on my third P870 (have two now - see signature) and I can say that they are a close second and they lack nothing in terms of fit, finish and sturdiness. I would agree with you that all other models of Clevos are total rubbish, including their latest and greatest P7 family of notebooks. They're chintzy and poorly engineered. This is why I say there is only one Clevo model worth owning. I am very blessed to have two of the only Clevos worth owning and the only MSI product worth owning. Nothing else offered anywhere is of interest to me and I am fortunate that the only two acceptable models available for sale are built exceptionally well.

Mind you. I have still my old Clevo from 2010, Aw17 and my P870. All 3 is in good shape and I will say all 3 holds high standard. Both in build quality, easy to maintenance and performance. FYI My Aw17 has been to the doctor. Not the Clevo’s.

Actually Ryzen upgrades will be easy.
Only TR upgrades will need a new motherboard.

I can respect that, because realistically we all have our strong views toward certain things outside of the laptop category.

It is a shame that the good ol' days of the AW's from that area are gone. Maybe one day we will see a DTR unit being offered by a company other than Clevo... I still have my hopes and so far I have my bets on someone like MSI to be the most realistic at this point to surprise us.

It is very fortunate that there still remains a few options to have a fully socketed laptop. That's something to be grateful for indeed...

Yes, we definitely agree on these things. Sometimes it is important to identify what we agree on so the things we do not agree on do not drive a wedge between good people.

Yes that famous screen shot lol...

Perhaps read the entire paragraph, rather than outlining portions of it. The entire context is important. This doesn't mean that we have to agree with it all, but there are valid points to the response, whether we agree with it or not.

I was speaking of pre-Ryzen AMD motherboards having to be replaced for an upgrade. Are you saying that you can go from an Athlon or Bulldozer Faildozer to Ryzen without a mobo swap? If that is true I did not know that and I apologize for stating it incorrectly.

Ah yeah. Correct on the pre Ryzen processors.
But even there from what I can remember.. AMD had much less socket saturation than Intel. (Please Correct me if Im wrong).

Though with the way things stand right now... My next upgrade to my workstation is probably going to be threadripper. Unless one of my use cases seriously benefits from the 7980xe.. price of which is definitely a big downer vs the performance gain over 1950X.
Still leaning towards the 7980XE though.

    Absolutely.

    I have an idea...

Perhaps, someone could organize something like massdrop where people can commit to a purchase of a laptop (dtr) and once it reaches a certain number of confirmed orders, the build would be executed.

If a company like MSI is willing to do this, this could be huge and with there being enough committed orders, it could make it worthwhile on the financial end...

This would be an excellent way to have the efforts of the movement to be accounted for.

You could definitely count me in to put up my deposit...

That all depends on who is getting/building the desktop. I don't see Mr. Fox, you or anyone else in this thread building a mainstream rig. Even my 7940X/1950X builds are somewhat on the low end considering how much more I can do. For example, I'm thinking about a compressor cooler. Decisions...

That's where I am looking toward if and when I can afford it. Unless AMD does something magic and gives us a ThreadRipper that can easily run 5.0GHz or higher on a simple liquid cooling setup. Core and threads are nice. Core and threads without high clocks won't cut it for me.

That is a really great idea and hope someone can do something like that. I'm recovering from some pretty hefty medical expenses (had some major surgery a month ago today) and spending money right now is not an option. And, I am pretty serious about leaving high performance notebook scene behind. It was fun while it lasted, but I really do not believe any laptop vendor is capable of giving me what I am looking for going forward. Maybe one will surprise me and I will change my mind, but 8700K wouldn't even be enough in a desktop. I'm looking to move from Enthusiast League to Extreme League at HWBOT.org before I am too old and tired to care any more, LOL. That can't happen with a laptop. Needs to be a minimum of 12C/24T before I will want to look at it.

Well to be honest even the Intels newer processors (with a similar core count as threadripper or more)
Can't sustain more than 4.5Ghz on a simple Waterloop.
Even 4.5Ghz needs a good 360mm rad, with which the temps are somewhere in the high 70s low 80s.( If you are lucky)

When the time comes and the cash is available I will be looking for whatever gets the highest overclocked benchmark scores on leaderboards. Since now is not the time, I will just make that decision when the time comes. I don't really care about brand. And, I don't do the cost-to-performance ratio thing either. Results are more important than value if winning is the only thing that matters, so I will get the best and baddest my wallet can tolerate when the time comes.

Thank you. God bless you, bro. I appreciate the kind words.

If you don't mind a 7940X (IMO, the best i9, high base clock and can easily hang with the 7960X) to OC, I can loan you my x299 rig when I'm done building the loop. At least it will give you some experience with the platform for when you do get yours. There is going to be a single GTX 1080 TI in it though. I wish and hope for the best recovery bro!

Back to my original talk about the 8700K. Clevo is releasing a Z370 based TM1 but Z390 is expected in Spring/early Summer. Z390 is where Intel will actually improve the chipset with features/functionality but while the 8c CL cpu will work in the Z370 (based on rumors) TM1, you will be missing the extra PCIe lanes and other features. This doesn't include Nvidia having Volta out around the time Z390 is released. There are going to be a lot of angry TM1 users in 6 to 8 months.

For the DM-G mod, I received one of these from @tanzmeister and had the mod almost finished. One of the c-clamps I had holding it together for soldering slipped off and it dropped about 3 feet to the floor and utterly destroyed it. I had desoldered the pipes from the cold plate and shifted the cold plate toward the battery so it would line up with the GPU. It was going really well and I was totally bummed when that happened.

Yesterday I received two more from @Ted@HIDevolution for modding. Hopefully, there will not be another accident. I am going to buy a few more c-clamps. Before we can move forward with the Clevo 1080 we need to figure out why it will not POST in the DM-G. @Prema thinks Clevo did something with the normally unused OEM pins in the MXM slot even though the service manual does not show anything in the schematic. The MSI 1080 from the Tornado F5 boots up fine in the DM-G. It would be nicer to use the stronger Clevo 1080 provided by @tanzmeister than the weaker MSI 1080 if we can get it to work. The heat sink mod will also be a lot more difficult using the Tornado F5 cold plate. It is not made nearly as well as the Clevo heat sink and will require a lot more effort because of how chintzy MSI made it.

I have reservations. (1) I do not know what the part with the yellow box is for. It might cause more fit problems between the IHS and cold plate than the thermal pad area on the opposite side already does, which could be a real nightmare. (2) Not sure what the extra radiator in the red box is going to accomplish. With no fan to push air through that extra radiator, it seems like it might have very limited functionality.

I don't want to see a third chassis revision in a row, but at the same time I am not convinced that adding 50% more cores without doubling the cooling capacity of the CPU heat sink is going to end well. What I am seeing in that photo doesn't really strike me as something that would add any meaningful cooling capacity. I could be wrong and looks might be deceiving, but I really don't think so.

Thank you for the compliment, but you're being very modest. You are one of the most kind and generous persons I have ever met.

Other than the difficulty of the heat sink part of the mod, the MSI 1080 would have two advantages. The only chassis mod would be the bracket the GPU screws to and no power cable is needed. Using the Clevo 1080 requires modding the bracket, the chassis and custom-made power cable (all of which are completed). Those will have been for naught if @Prema is unable to help me identify why the Clevo 1080 is not working.

Just to rule out the 1080 from @tanzmeister is not DOA, I am going to pull the GPUs out of my DM3 and use the 1080 he sent in the DM3 to be sure it is functioning properly. There is a chance (not likely) it is defective, so I need to rule that out. In addition to not booting in the DM-G, other things start going haywire after attempting to boot the Clevo 1080. Even after putting the 980M back in the chassis things are goofed up unless I restore my Windows image. Screen won't turn on, the fans go crazy and the system shuts down for no reason. It actually seemed like the DM-G motherboard had failed it was acting so strange. After restoring my Windows image everything immediately returned to normal. In other words, the Clevo 1080 is doing something to tear up the OS. So, I definitely need to test that GPU in the DM3 to make sure there is not something wrong with it before I burn any more calories on that.

I didn't even think of that! You're right, there's a radiator with no fan blowing air thru it! I'm sticking with my X9E2, If I had a pile of extra cash I still don't think I'd purchase the new Coffee Lake unit. For what I use it for, the 7700K works great. I did notice a difference when I switched my Architect software over to the Panther. Ray tracing was faster with the 6 core and I have that set at only 3.6ghz, no turbo or overclock.

After the DM-G 1080/7700K mod is done, I think I am going to be done with laptops. The DM3 is an awesome machine after everything is fixed ( @Prema BIOS and using thinner thermal pads on the GPUs, delid, lapping IHS, etc.) but it requires significant effort to take it from being pretty good to awesome.

That seems insane to me. I thought all Clevo did to turn the DM into a DM3 was spread the GPU slots apart a bit and add a couple power plugs for the new GPUs to connect to (and a couple minor chassis mods). There's obviously a lot more into it. That would be cool getting it to work.

I thought the same thing. If it is not a defective Clevo 1080 causing issues, I would say it is totally insane if they did other things in terms of making the connections in the MXM slot proprietary. It would also reignite the sense of rage, angst and bitterness associated with the notion of Clevo acting like Nazis and intentionally doing things to interfere with upgrading their previous generation notebooks with newer GPUs. I hope that is not the case, because if it is the case that rage, angst and bitterness would be justified and reinforce that this is exactly what they are doing. It would also be one more reason to abandon notebooks, as the only brand left worth owning will have become our nemesis.

Could be that Clevo use higher capacity pipes now than what they used before.
I can see Clevo have changed the third pipes for the pure Cpu HS (The 3rd pipes is bigger/fatter now - equal size as all 3 vs. what's used in DM1). This could of course make a difference + the 4th half sized pipes will do a job. And bigger Die due the 6 cores vs. Kaby lake will improves the heat transfer from Die to the Heatsink.

As for the part in the yellow box... Why welded on this bracket if it does not have a function? I mean the second small/thin Cpu fan is missing in the picture.

See also the power concumption with stock 7700K vs. 8700K in P95. This mean about 23-25% increaded powa with more cores. Add 50% more cores ain't the same as 50% increased power concumption. And all know how heavy P95 is in use. But yeah, the heatsink live on the Edge as I can see it. I would loved to test this Cpu HS in my Clevo Dm1.

I, too, would like to try the TM1 heatsink combo here. I think overall it might cool the system better.

That's 2 more things I didn't notice. The extra heat pipe, and that could definitely be a mount for another fan. It makes sense, like the p570wm heat-sink

The D900F also had a vestigial fin array. But that had an extra fan connector, which the current models don't (though we could if we have the guts and know-how take power from the board). Honestly, I like the separation of the GPUs from the CPU once again. The CPU was cooler when no GPU stress was present, but with a beefier heatsink (especially if that's a vapor chamber contact point, though I doubt) maybe taking more advantage of the fans, it might be good.

The question is, have they produced better fans? The fans here don't actually push that much air considering their noise and size.

If there's a "TM1 upgrade kit" for a DM3 with better compatible fans and the new heatsinks being better (especially if they didn't paint the bloody fins this time!) then maybe the laptops would actually do the good stuff? But who knows. Things were looking up and then I got floored by a lot of medical expenses. So any money I had for an upgrade or an A/C unit just went out the window for me. I won't be able to test this or even entertain the thought of any upgrades anytime soon.

There is a DM3 CPU heatsink that is only for the CPU. No modding required :D
    And its slightly beefier.
But yes the TM1 GPU Vapor Chamber + DM3 CPU Heatsink or the TM1 CPU Heatsink (which might need a mod)

Yeah, I'm sure Clevo created 8-10mm thick fan more like this
    [IMG]
They could use a cable fan splitter. If the fan header can deliver enough amp. Then there is no need for two fan headers on MB.

Could very well be, but im still worried about the additional VRM heat adding up.

I mean one of the reasons for the second small HS grills and the 4th half size pipe is for the VRM*s who will need it. Not only for the cores.

Nice oc'd 7700K is similar as stock 8700K (Aka the orginal DM1/3 Cpu HS should manage stock 8700K powa). The Coffee cpu will be the same as today's 7700K with the new cpu HS. This isn't a big upgrade vs. before. Rather say the same.

Edit. See the better explanation in next post

It's a pretty big upgrade. The extra cores are invaluable to some games and usage situations. As I was explaining to bloodhawk before, I would rather a 4.2 6-core with the same IPC as a 4.7-4.8 quadcore, easily.

Yeah thats definitely true, but because of the added heat, the over capacity will be maxed out, leaving very little headroom for on air overclocking.
Also i dont think that heatsink i mentioned earlier will fit the DM1.

Yeap! Any day. Heck i would even run it at 48-47-45-44-43-42 or 47-46-45-44-43-42-41.
