Run the Skydiver Demo once you think you have found your 24/7 clocks. That thing punishes the GPU hard. At least for me, if a certain combination doesn't pass that demo, surely enough at some point in time it crashes for my games.

Actually, run all unigine benchmarks (valley, heaven, tropics, and sanctuary) with all 3dmark tests. If it fails any of them, you adjust and test. Some of those will crash when 3dmark tests pass!

Yeah, forgot to mention those. But i have seen my 980 crash the skydiver crash on certain clocks only on skydiver and none of the Unigine Tests. (even after leaving them running for 1 hour straight)ajc9988 likes this.

I hear ya. Skydiver will bring a card down a bit! But, I've seen the others knock down an otherwise stable overclock, especially the legacy ones. @jaybee83 recently did his and "loved" Tropics benchmark on taking down what seemed stable, if memory serves. ..

Think that **** got burnt into the heatsink.. no way i could take it off. alcohol, even using a razorblade.. I tried to clean it as best as i could and i put the ic diamond 24k on the processor using the X method @Phoenix recommended... Hopefully this crap doesnt hamper the results if not i guess ill need to buy a new heatsink... also those white bands are what sit on top of the vrams. Should i buy new ones and out them over the vrams instead of them being stuck on the heatsink? I i should what brand and inches? Fujipoly 2"?
Need ya'ls inputs here... thanks -
I usually slide the voltage slider all the way to the right. Then I first determine the maximum core clock, and second the maximum memory clock. Then I try to find the right combination between the two, after that I lower the voltage
This is of course done with fans at full speed and ac on.
3dmark vantage is still a brutal benchmark.Mr. Fox likes this. -
That looks like CLU to me.

I had to buy a new heatsink as mine was messed like yours and even with my Thermal Liquid Cleaning kit it wouldn't come off -
Yes those bastards put CLU without me asking them to do so... Thank god the guarantee fro sillicon was over already because they had to kind of sand the processor for CLU to stick... mofos... Im so pissed at them i wont ever buy crap from them again... @Phoenix how much does that heatsink goes for? Also about the vram pad you think those are ok stuck to the heatsink or should i buy the ones you actually spread over like gum on top of the vrams... I once had fujipoly's on my Alienware... Which one would you recommend and the thickness...?
-
Here's the problem with that, sometimes the card won't take that much voltage and can result in a lower overclock on the core. I can accomplish +240 or +250 on the core with +62.5mV. Because of that, of I went your route, i'd have all that extra voltage putting out extra heat which must be dissipated. My way pulls less watts, generates less heat, and gets to stable for everyday use. I crank to the top when benching, but not everyday. ..

I bought the extra heatsink from HIDevolultion for $50 USD
I don't know anything about those pads. Never used themLast edited: Jul 7, 2016Terrablade likes this. -
Yeah CLU is a hit or miss unless the heat sink is perfectly flat. Just use the normal paste (ICD) and that layer shouldn't be a problem. A new heat sink should be around $50.
I think it was $50, the fans were $25.
I have 2 as well, 1 to mod the heck out of and 1 for actual cooling

I just like avoiding black screens and found out it gimped my oc on my 970m. Now, with my 980m, I throw about a 37.5-50mv OV, then move up from there. Driver crash, I assume, is easier on the card.

anyone knows about the pads for the vrams? /me points at @Papusan

I still use the pads who followed. If they still are ok. Use them.
@Mr. Fox @Phoenix @ajc9988
BTW. If I remember correctly..., There is a post in this forum threads that talk about use of acid. A brother who is chemist talk about this. He told how you could remove Liquid Metal from heatsink / IHS completely with Acid...
Maybe in the Collaboratory Liquid thread. I'm 100% sure about this!! Can someone try to find the post? The damn small phone and my old eyes
Last edited: Jul 7, 2016 -
Me being disabled and my wife having to do all the work as I direct her and you want ME to try acid? no thank you ill buy a new heatsink LOL...
@Papusan you use the same vram thermals that its on the picture I posted? the stock ones that are stuck to the heat sink?Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

Yes.
And about the use of Acid to clean Liquid metal... I know this will work. I have read about this topic in one of the threads. I hope some of us can find the post!!
Not that you shall use it!!Georgel likes this. -
No need for acid. Just use the scuff pad that comes with CLU and it will come of. The metal will still be silver colored, but that doesn't hurt anything. If the heat sink fits nice it's crazy to use anything less than CLU and the temps will suck compared to CLU no matter what you use. I only use IC Diamond when the heat sink fit is horrible. Otherwise, CLU on everything I own, including my wife's XPS 15 BGA turdbook.
Indeed... also one of my personal favorites ahead of Fire Strike. Vantage will quickly separate the man's CPU from the sissy little school girl CPU. With Vantage, a weak CPU means do not pass go and do not collect $200, just stay home and enjoy your milk and cookies, punk... and, brutal is right... totally awesome.Last edited: Jul 7, 2016 -
Apparently CLU sucked for me since i couldnt go even over 43 OC... I have now put on the 3 3k rpm fans on the U3 plus the 24k ic diamond on CPU and will try to OC over this 43 crappy OC i currently have and see if the temps hold ok
-
Well, if the CPU heat sink does not fit right, CLU won't work well at all. It cannot be used to plug holes from shoddy QC. Only IC Diamond can do a decent job of that. It's nice and thick and the only thing that works well with a sloppy fitting heat sink.
-
I will see how far I can go with this one.. After I get a quote from HIDevolution on a heat sink and I get it i will put CLU on that one and see how it goes.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this.
-
Some think you can't use the same heatsink after use of Liquid metal. But you can. For those who still don't understand... They can use Acid. I don't remember the name of the the Acid brand. But after use of this... The heatsink/IHS will be almost like new again.Georgel, Mr. Fox, bloodhawk and 1 other person like this.

When I switched from CLU to IC Diamond I bought a new heat sink as I didn't like that grey color on the heat sink even though I j i.e. it was clean but the new heat sink from HIDevolution has a much better fit than the Eurocom on that came with my system -
Cheaper, better solution: learn to lap! !! Lapping is sanding it down to flat, even mirror polishing if you'd like. Once you sand past the layer that the CLU penetrated the tiny scratches and imperfections, you are back to copper!also, if done right, it is flatter and may make better contact.
Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk -
Not all heatsink Clevo use is of quality we should expect. But do the best you can to prep it... See post from @ajc9988
-
Pardon me but it is counter-intuitive. When you sand something down you are actually taking material off... Thus making it more difficult for the heat sink to actually make contact with the CPU. At least thats what common sense would suggest unless this doesnt go by the common sense rules
TomJGX and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
There is a big difference to shave ... Than to cut off his head. When you delid processor and put back IHS without glue... You can still get proper contact between IHS and HS. You have room for preparing. Sorry for my *** English
-
Thats different.. when you sand something off, some of the original material sands of too specially when its so thin like this layer of CLU.. So shaving of/sanding of that layer of CLU will cause some shaving/sanding of the heat sink as well ( use to be a handyman when I was a younger fool )... Ill just buy the new one. 25/50usd is nothing.. Ill keep this one stored in case.... will do the sanding when the new one comes and try it but im sure I am right on my assertion
-
Well, whatever happens I hope it works out nice.
But, nobody should worry about the change in color. IC Diamond changes the color of the copper as well. None of that part matters. Some people get really worked up over it and it's silly. Like being worried about the tread on your tires getting dirty. It just flat-out doesn't matter that the metal has changed colors. The scuff pad that comes with CLU does not sand down the heat sink because the pad material is too soft to do that. It does effectively remove any dried up thermal paste. The only reason the CLU got dried up like that is because the heat sink did not fit right and it was exposed to air. When the fit is correct it does not happen. CLU remains a liquid/paste indefinitely as long as it is trapped between the CPU and heat sink and not exposed to air.
@Papusan - I think it is sulfuric acid. I remember what you were referring to and I will see if I can find it. I would not use that except as a last resort because it can be dangerous if not handled correctly. Even if a person knows how to handle it, accidents can happen. So far I have never needed to break out the big guns to remove CLU.
Edit: It was posted by @n=1 and it was hydrochloric acid.
Last edited: Jul 8, 2016 -
Then if CLU got stuck that bad this heat sink sucks so its better to try a new one and see.... as i said i will save this one and buy the acid just in case
If air does that to CLU the specially now i need to try a new one since i have the 3 Vardar 3,000rpm fans blowing the heck out of the laptop
Just wish the exhaust were on the sides to put a heat vacuum too. that would be da bomb. -
-
Yah im running now on ICD 24k.. Using the X method... doing some things first to start tinkering with the OC.. actually will start now
-
You are correct, so let me explain how it works. You remove the layers containing it, fractions of a millimeter. This is compensated, usually, by the spring mounts. This isn't like a cabinet where you want the joints fit tight, it is more made like doors on the cabinet or a spring load of sorts, where the extra distance is compensated by another force. All computer components have tolerances built in that allows for variance if socket height, cpu height, etc. Because of this, the manufacturers build in compensation components, such as spring screws, to level force and compensate for height variance and level of the planes. So, when done correctly, lapping both surfaces to increase contact allows for better heat transference and will not likely be an issue unless you take off too much, which would only happen if your heatsink was ****ed to begin with!

does 3dmark only work for testing your cpu score? or what other proggys are good to test your cpu score?
-
3DMark 11, wPrime 1024M , TS Bench 1024M , PRIME95, AIDA64.
I tend to do an After Effects render for good measure. It has detected bad over clocks even after everything else passed. But that may vary. -
How much of an increase in 3d mark score would be considered as good? Like 1000 points?

If you use a desktop or notebook has no significance. Same Clock Speed used on processor in a desktop vs laptop will provide about the same performance!! If you @Terrablade are unhappy with your bench results... Simply start increasing multi on processor!! LOL

How much voltage increase are you using? Is it the driver crashing with TDRs or a black screen lockup?

I can't understand all the complaining about using Liquid ultra
