Ill be honest man i played with this thing all day yesterday and i could not be happier ....
I ran a whole boatload of games and the performance is awesome, the noise levels are very good even when gaming under full load....
If i had one tiny complaint and its a small one its that the GPU fan with the ATI card is constantly running around 30%.... idle temps on the cards are higher then the Nvidia one but it never really gets louder, so i should not complain about it at all but that would be my only one and its very minor....
If i were to rate the computer with some sort of grade it would be a B+ i guess based on the fact that battery life is horrible and theres not backlit keyboard ... Everything else about the machine is a winner and most of all the Price....

yes. the backlit and a bigger battery and this would be the perfect single gpu notebook.
-

it is annoying that the most stylistic Clevo will get is the crappy lighting on the M980nu and the x8100
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
that's doesn't count because everything lights up except the keyboard. the gaming buttons that no one uses even lights up. the back where the heatsinks that YOU WILL NOT SEE UNLESS YOU USE YOUR COMPUTER BACKWARDS lights up and not the keyboard....
i think sager fired that person. lol.
except for that it is still a nice computer. lol -
So with a 920xm overclocked to 24x & HD5870 overclocked at 920/1100 I should get a really high score at 3dmark06 (like 16000+) right ? all i want is a laptop equals to my m17x right now.

Good luck getting there.

06 scores dont make hardware comparable in the real world
-
I was 135 points shy of 16k so it should be easily doable if you put your mind to it... I got bored though....

Mandrake got over 17k in his g73
-
Anything over 15000 for a single GPU laptop is amazing anyway you look at it.
Unless your going for records it's not worth it, OCing is good only if your laptop can function , only faster. -

My 8690 is supposed to be delivered later today. All this talk about the laptop being so great is really getting me excited
-
It should becuase it is.
Congrats -
Yeah that's wierd since score are alot better on the clevo
-
The CPU in the G73 can overclock ALOT higher then in the 8760... I believe Mandrake also used Windows XP to achieve that score which would account for an extra few hundred points tacked on to the overall score...
-
-
they each have a half slice of the pie...one has cpu and the other had gpu....who will be first to figure out how to get both to work on one machine....
xp increase a bit more than 300 points...depending who is benching it...it can get as high as 2k points higher in xp
-
@Johnksss: Ah right was just referring to Drake and how see used XP just to squeeze an extra 300. Wasn't saying that the limit
-
-
He tried the different Fan profile but it was no go ... Even though the flash was successful it did not effect how the fans worked sadly....
As for the whole XP thing in 06 i was not slamming on Drake either for using XP as thats fine and we know when it comes to benching you will use any means to achieve the best scores overall...
The G73s bios though opens up so many more possibilities for OCing then the 8760..
Me personally all i want to do is mildy overclock my CPU for everyday use and i would be very happy...
There was a Bios for the 8760 that had some basic CPU adjustments built in but it was pulled in the end and im not sure if the 5870 would even work with it so i have not asked anyone to pass along that Bios to me... -
tough break there then...
does this thing have a blind bios recovery option? if not...i sure as heck wouldn't be trying it...not unless i had an extra card laying around.
but on the other hand...it could just boot into windows, but with a standard vga card...then you could just flash back.
and as for over clocking...i only do it for points.nor operations or gaming i dont over clock. it's exactly why i spent the money i did...so i didn't have to over clock to play... -

Well thats a bummer but thanks for the confirmation....
Id like to be able to OC a little 24/7 but unless i can set it and forget it i wont bother..... I wont be running the E-leet tuning utility everytime i boot into Windows and im not sure if a batch file can be created that can start it up apply clocks then close it at boot...
Guess i can do some digging on that one...Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
eleet can be made to auto over clock
you would need to run a script that can do alt + 1- 8 for which ever profile your gonna use. -
Maybe you guy got a bad batch of cpu that don't like overclocking ? We must do some more test like putting drake cpu on a W870cu.
What are the temp when you overclock ? -
The G73 has options in the bios to overclock well beyond the means of the 8760.... The 8760 can only use software to overclock and even the software only lets you adjust the 4 multipliers.... Totally different then the G73 which can use both if needed .... Apples to Oranges Night and Day etc...
-
So am I right in thinking you can no longer unlock the multiplier on the 920xm?
I just ordered a W870cu thinking I would be able to overclock a 920xm in it -
..
-
And what is the max we can expect from a multi only overclock on the W870Cu ?

Shenanigans.

4 ghz is do able on a 120w power supply..
just not sure how much doing your going to be doing once there.
it doesn take much voltage to boot something like that...the problems start once the os starts loading and the cpu starts jumping up in watts or power consumption.
example...he could boot that in powersaver mode. then once in the os...attempt to change to balanced mode. this kicks in c1e and eist. and only till he puts a serious load on the cpu will it try to run the 4 ghz clock at full speed....(speculation of course)
now, if he said he was stable at 4ghz...at 1.163 volts....negative. that would fail running linx 20 times @ 25000 problem size in a very short time. making it...non stable.
3.8 they are stable at that voltage..per gophn's testing....but he didn't over clock his gpu to out of this world clocks either.
but hey...if it was done once it can be done again...where is hemi at now?...lol
side note:
lets also not get hitting 4 ghz and doing 4 ghz stable mixed up.....these are two entirely different things.
edit:
sorry guys...gophns chip is a desktop cpu as well..but they both operate on pretty much the same voltage scheme... -
Well since Rancid reported the 180w Lite on PSU working fine so power should not be an issue at all...
I have not bothered trying mine yet because my 120w one is working fine for what im doing and have had no issues....
Im just glad i have a spare incase the stock one croaks...

Gophn was using a desktop i7 975....hemi has a laptop i7 920xm
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Well... I will say it again I guess.
I did NOT stay for any considerable length of time at 4GHZ. For the most part I stayed in the 3.7's and such for periods of time. All I have said that during very brief periods, mine has went to 4GHZ that is all. Now is this still unbelievable....Last edited by a moderator: May 7, 2015 -
Not unbelievable but it would be nice to run some tests if an updated bios is released and we can see what it's doing.Last edited by a moderator: May 7, 2015 -

Moo do you still have the M17x R2? If so can you try throwing the 5870 in there and see if it can manage the same oc?
I am curious to see if the actual mxm card or the system housing it is allowing the oc. As the clevo spanks the asus in gpu overclocking so far -
He sold his R2, scook.
-
Speedy Gonzalez Xtreme Notebook Speeder!
are you going to get the hd5870 Sleey0 ?
-
Whenever they decide to sell them seperately.
It's going to be a long wait. Sager now lists the 5870 as backordered and a late March ETA.
And that is with a system purcahse. Bare cards are going to be well into April. I don't mind though because I am enjoying the 285 for now -
nvm 10char
-
hey so is g73 better or clevo?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
the Asus will OC further but the Clevo has arguably better cooling and considerably better GPU oc
-
If you feel like spending 30 very frustrating minutes opening up the G73 AND voiding your warranty, then yes the G73 is good for OC the 920.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I guess that is true, looked at some pictures, that thing is even less accessible than the M17x
-
Scook, what you said is an understatement. lol
You have to remove the entire mobo of the G73. I give it a serious W TF -
they thought they we're curbing you from trying to do a cpu install your self(cutting them out of some possible income)..lol
