Lot's of CPU's have stickers on the cache nodes on the underside. You can keep it on or remove it if you want. It's just a sticker. I usually use hobby blades to remove them.

Been skimming over the forum while I wait for my new D900F from RJTech.. Im upgrading from my 3 year old Dell M90. She served me well but its time. Im a 3D artist / CAD CAM professional. Some of the newer development in 3D is making use of CUDA and GPU rendering and I'm in the dust with my Quadro FX 2500m.. Cant wait to try the GTX285m. ++ This will be my first time using an SSD.. I went ahead with the 80GB Intel gen2 SSD along with the 320GB 7200 rpm HD for storage.

Anyone else into CAD, CAD CAM or rendering tech?

You will be very happy with your D900f, Routb3d. It's like having the most powerful desktop in a notebook. Literally....from a pure computational power aspect, it just is amazing!

Thanks for the reassurance JhonKsss. Every little bit helps..

It was a pretty big decision choosing my weapon.. The D900f is going to have to last me a while.. I have been pretty lucky with my laptop selection so far.. I think the D900f is a good choice for keeping relatively competitive through the next few years. I bout in at the low end of the D900f's configuration knowing that I will be upgrading the CPU, RAM and SSD as the prices of the fall. Im sure the system is no slouch even at its lowest end configuration.

I'm not sure about the graphics card though. Is the graphics card upgradable in this system or am I stuck with the GTX285 for the life of this machine?

hopefully not...hopefully you can upgrade the gpu again,.
and as far as your choice. it's a good one.
remember...you can buy all your upgrade parts from your local frys/microcenter or computer store for allot less or...if you have a desktop...you can switch the cpus around.. :) like Q56 did

1.4 is even on the low end of conservative. You can push it much much higher. I was around 1.6v with my 920 D0 @ 4.55Ghz. Used to run my Q6600 @ 1.7 a few years ago....still going strong. With i7's bsod's of 101 & 124 will tell you if you need more vcore or vvt, respectively. Just watch the bsod's and react accordingly, adding more vcore & vvt. You will find your jumps in vcore get MUCH larger as you go up the Ghz ladder.

Also, with vantage and 3dmxx, you need more power to the chip. cpu tests not as much...my experience anyway, lol.

Did someone say that I can use desktop parts to upgrade this in the future?
If so; does that include the video card?

    And i9's are already out?

Well, the i7 960 that came in my sager notebook is a pretty good overclocker. Worked on 'er for two nights. The highest I got was 4.887Ghz on a 3dm05 single card gtx 295 run (41,286) in a evga classified E759 mobo.

    My highlight was a 4.788Ghz 3dmark06 run for 32,544!

It's a shame this beast of a cpu would have laid dormant if I never peeled it out of the 9280. Just goes to show how much untapped potential there is in these notebooks if Clevo would just beef up the bios to allow some overclocking. Of course we would find some good cooling, LOL!

Im thinking about taking the 975 out of my lappy and using it in another mobo, then put a 920 in this as the performance difference is minimal and an extreme CPU doing nothing is a henious thing!

it's what i would have done...benched the lappy...get all my scores...then put the 920 in there and call it a day. the 975 ready for benching in the DT..where she would live out the rest of her days...lol

My bro has got a 920 C0, not ideal but hey its a laptop, the 975 will live in his DT under phase ;)

Finally cracked 5GHz on the 980-X on water and in doing so beat 2x WPrime32M guys using SS on this CPU!

I recon i can squeeze a bit more out of her, perhaps a bit more vcore...

JUst understand that the fans on the 9280 will run a little bit more with 920 C0 in there. My 920 is a C0 and the fans cycle up more often. A little more heat with C0 stepping. Fans were really quiet with the D0 stepped 960.

Let me ask you guys who are OCing something. With this beast running amazing...are you seeing big differences in performance; or is all this OCing just for trying to push the limits? If you are seeing a performance gain; what the heck are you running that is gaining from the OC?

    Random Question:
The first thing I'm going to put on here is a benchmarking program (not that I know what I'm looking for). Should I use 3dMark06, or 3dMark Vantage? Why?

Ok. I'll try Vantage. Again, I wish knew what I'm going to be looking at. But I'll still take screenshots for my records. Is Vantage more geared for video card heavy rigs then? Or is it as you said; just not as swayed by CPU?

All the gpu tests are geared toward the vid card (Vantage, 3dmark06/05/03/01). The older tests use more cpu to weight the score, but they are all gpu tests. Cpu tests are benchmarks like superpi, wprime, and cpu-z. These test the speed of a cpu only.

With the D900f you can run any of these benchmarks. To make the benchmarks run faster, you must overclock you components. In the D900f you can only overclock the gpu, not the cpu.

Most of the discussion in the previous page has been about overclocking the cpu on a desktop mother board, not the D900F.

Start by running vantage and see what score you get. Then DL nvidia system tools, and find the section to OC your core/shaders/vid ram. inch them up ever so slightly and see what results vantage gives. I settled on a 665/1075/1550 as my max OC. I wouldn't go that high to begin....just test and have fun....watch the hours go by, and get not sleep, LOL!!

How do I know if I've gone too high? Will the tool tell me? And does OCing make your parts wear down quicker?

A number of things could happen...screen will freeze during test, bsod message, driver will fail/message.

Oh yea, I just dropped my 920 D0 into the 9280 and took out the C0. It makes a big dif in temps. C0= Idle temps 42-46, D0=Idle temps 28-31

    Hi,

My D900F ships from RJTech tomorrow.. Im studying my configuration choice as much as I can before it ships.. RJTech has been great.. They let me know that I got the 920 D0 processor and spent a good deal of time explaining the dual channel vs triple channel memory to me.

I spent some time reading up on the GTX 285m that is shipping with my D900f. I found folks in the engineering and CAD CAM world calling the 280 and 285 "gamers cards" and saying that I should have a Quadro FX for professional CAD performance. I was wondering if anyone knows if the D900f can be upgraded with a quadrofx card. Im thinking the Quadro FX 3800m would be a nice fit if it were possible.

    Thanks in advance..

    IC

Routb3b, I don't think it can be at this point. Ask RJ tech, they will let you know. I mean this is a laptop....that has a desktop cpu. Wouldn't it perform at least as well as the top of the line mobile processor/quadro configuration?

I shouldn't have spoke so soon...after a day in a regular environment, it appears there is not that much difference in idle temps between the C0 & D0. Fans don't seem to run as much....could be my imagination and wishful thinking though, LOL!

ANyone had any luck installing the newer drivers for our video card? There have been three or four driver releases since december but I cant get them working. I've tried modified INF files, a Dox's drivers and everything but they just wont install!!

Has anyone else had success? I hate being so far behind just because nvidia wont add our card to their inf files.
