Do the lights appear on when you turn the laptop on? Do you have any sort of activity or indication of activity behind that black screen?

What happened? Did you update the BIOS before the EC/KBC ?

only the battery light turn on and the fan starts.
I failed because (i think) I tryed to update bios and EC/KBC at the same time.
    can I do something?

You don't have much of a choice...

There are two options that can fix your laptop:
    1. New motherboard which costs a lot of money
    2. De-soldering your BIOS chip and putting a new one. If you know anyone who is good with electronics and can do that. Then there are places where you can order a new BIOS chip for your laptop. Here is one of such place: Clevo Germany

Not as far as I know. Clevo never implemented a fail-safe for bad BIOS flash. I can't offer more advice than to google and see if there is a solution for your problem hidden somewhere on the net.

    I find some twicks , like :
-remove motherboard battery for 2 minutes
-hold on power button for 30 seconds without battery

but I don't think they work....

Removing the battery means taking the whole laptop apart.... but what do you have to loose at this point? You are out of warranty right ?

    Hi guys

I have a 5796 and a 5797, and I want to upgrade their CPUs and GPUs.

What do you recommend for (a) best price/performance and (b) best performance with price no issue ?

    Thanks.

    a) 5796 : X9100 or T9900 with a 260M GTX - the same would apply to the 5797

    b) x9100 with a 280M GTX - 5796
    QX9300 with a 280M GTX - 5797

    Great thanks Blacky

As I'm refurbishing both my machines, I'd also like to replace their LCDs, kbds, trackpads, lids. Any ideas where I can buy these?

Hmmm.... ask your reseller or any other Clevo/Sager reseller for parts, they will usually have kbs and lids and stuff like that, if they can't help you, you can ask pkhetan.

As for LCDs, you just buy them off the market. The best models are the LG LP171WU3 (but make sure you can a non-dead-pixel guarantee with it, cause they usually have such problems) or the Samsung SEC 3448 / LTN170CT05 / LTN170CT07 (the LTN170CT07 is probably the best but impossible to find so just forget about it).

I'm in Australia and my reseller, Pioneer Computers, literally refused to talk to me because I disagreed with their tech guy about my 5797 overheating (they said it wasn't, and when I disagreed, they shut me out completely and ignored all emails/calls). Anyway, I'm on my own but that's ok. Those guys had been causing me a lot of grief for a couple of years and it's good to no longer have to ever deal with them again.

I'll contact a couple of USA sager/clevo resellers about the parts I mentioned and I'll do a search online for the LG LP 171WU3 LCDs. Just to confirm, if I buy 2 and replace both my LCDs (5796 & 5797), those LCDs will suit both laptops right? And I'll get my much-beloved 16:10 1920 x 1200 resolution?

I've just spent the last couple of hours looking for the cpus and gpus you suggested. Much harder to find than I would've thought! I checked a couple of USA online retailers I usually deal with (newegg.com and superbiiz.com) and they had NOTHING for laptops, only desktops.

I just found a reseller in China offering the x9100 for my 5796 (X9100 3.06G 6M 1066 Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile) for $US244 with free shipping to here. How does that sound?

I already have the 2.53GHz Q9300 quad-core in my 5797, so I'm good to go there (although in my opinion it's running hot so I'm going to be doing a complete tear-down/reinstall with new paste etc and try to cool things down ie what my reseller should've done!!).

I also found a reseller in Canada (Eurocom Notebooks) selling the GTX 280M's (I'll need 2 to replace my current 9800GT & 9800GTX) ...

    VGA Project Name - Geforce GTX280M 1GB DDR3 MXM3
    PCB Version - KV-4 94V-0 GPU
    Product name - Geforce GTX280M 1GB DDR3 ASIC G92-761-B1
VGA Bus Slot - MXM Slot MXM Type III b
    Engine Clock - 525MHz
    Memory Clock - 950MHz

They are asking $US535 each (plus shipping). This doesn't include any screws, paste or heat sinks, so I'll have to get those extra as well.

What do you think about the pricing?

Thanks for all your help on this Blacky, it's really appreciated!!

    Cheers

    Toby

Yes, you will get your wonderful resolution and it will work on both laptops. But I as told you, the LP171WU3 has a tendency to develop dead pixels or white spots so be careful.

Your best bet for computer components is eBAY. Generally the Chinese resellers will have ES CPUs, not OEM. While ES CPUs are cheaper, OEMs are better and they run cooler. If your QX9300 is ES then that might explain some of the overheating. In order to avoid overheating of the QX9300, make sure your CPU heat-sink is properly aligned so that the cooper plate stays dead flat on the CPU dies. When you keep removing the CPU heat-sink it can bend, especially the arm which connects the radiator with the main cooper plate that covers the CPU.

The 280M is rather expensive from Eurocom, you might try eBAY as well in this case. But if you intend to order so many components I think it might be better to ask pkhetan. I've bought some components for my laptop from him and he does a good job, he can order directly from Clevo, but shipping takes forever.

I can't find a way of contacting pkhetan - there's no contact info in his profile. I left a message on a thread he posted to today, so hopefully he will see my message.

Eurocom - I've been reading some scary things about their shady business practises so I'm going to stay away from them.

Engineering samples - I agree with you, I want to avoid any problems. However I read here that QS - Qualification Samples (aka Final Engineering Samples) are ok - is that true? The CPU I was looking at is a QS not an ES ...

While some call them QS, they are in fact still ES and you can't really tell if they really are QS and not some other kind.

Ok, I won't go with the ES/QS models then. I'm definitely going to check to see if my reseller put an ES in my system though.

Do you have any way of contacting pkhetan? I still haven't heard back from him. Is there any way I can PM him?

    Isn't " mxm-upgrade" a good place for notebook GPU's?

As for screens, sadly there are no LED backlight ones for M570TU on the market, but there are some conversion kits for screens up to 15.4” WUXGA and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about 17.1" kits ?

Too small of a market I guess... I emailed them already a few times and I was made to believe that they have no plans for >15.4” screens. I guess one might hack that kit by using their inverter with a longer/extended/hacked LED strip...

One of the e-mailing sessions (the "Are there any plans to offer 17" LED kits in the future?" question was not answered):

Purchased a second hand M570TU from eBay and trying to figure out if it has Quad Core support. Looked in the Clevo M570ETU - updated M570TU with quad-core support thread and if I understood correctly the V3.0B revision Motherboard should support Quad Cores.

Can someone confirm this? It would make my day, cause my eBay purchase has V3.0B MB.

At that configuration, I would say somewhere around $500 - $600.

Just look at laptops that offer similar performance today and take out of their price 10-15% for every year since the laptop has been owned.
That should give you a fair estimate. For instance, by this method, my laptop values around $750 - $800 today.

Bought an M570TU on these forums

it has a v3.1 motherboard, will i be able to run a quadcore on this motherboard?

And does the M570(E)TU allow fsb overclocking?

I think some FSB overclocking is possible, but requires some modding and it is unstable. Hence, it is not very easy to do, better search up the forums for info.

if you have v3.1 you should have quad support but I am not sure. I think it has to be v 3.1-B or something like that in order to work, I forgot. Just use the search function of the forum and it will lead you to everything you need.

Does anyone know? can't seem to find it here or on google.

And i'll share my expirience with the m570tu and a fx 3700m.

Flashed the 3700m with an original 280m sager bios modified to 1.05v. Works flaweless, no difference between this and the real 280m i have.

This 3700m is actually faster then my 280m, 280m clocks to about 635/1530/950 while the fx 3700m does 585/1450/1040, memory might still go higher but at afterburner limit.

And is there a different heatsink for quads? Just installed my e8435 which is a C0 penryn like retail x9100 and at 1.15v its at 80c which seems rather hot.

    quick update

Not perfect, the m570tu cant handle the fx 3700m at 1.05v (reaches 95-100C running furmark),

550/1375/1050 1v and still faster then the 280m at 635/1530/950

Now i just have to sorth this e8435. it must be hotter then a x9100 because this is nuts, cleaned heatsink undervolted to 1.125v and 80c prime

Not perfect as in can't get 280m speeds without high temps but seems the G92 core is memorylimited anyway so i might just keep the fx 3700m in my m570tu and sell the 280m

    it's exactly the same clock/clock. It's just 65nm vs 55 nm.

And lower core but higher memoryclocks seem to be better.

Depends on application. Most games won't benefit too much from the higher memory frequency. However, the supported memory frequency is the same for both cards, it's just that some cards were better made and worked at higher frequencies while others didn't. The same is valid for the 3700M and the 280M.

Exactly, it's 65nm vs. 55nm which means the 280M can provide the same performance for less heat.

I used to have a 9800M GTX in my laptop and sold it because for me it was too hot. The 280M has no heat problems even with the clocks that I am using.

    Hello all,
1st time poster here, and I'd like to ask a question or two.

I have a Sager 5797 (m571tu) and my 9800m GTX has died, I have all ready purchase a NP8170 but would still like to use (not for gaming) my 5797. Which Brings me to my question, Will a 8700M GT like this ( Alienware M17X M15X Nvidia 8700M-GT 512MB Video Card : ) one work, and if so can I just take off the heat sink/bracket and slap it in my 5797, with the stock heat sink?

Thanks in advance for any of your time/help/advice.

    Cheers

Yeah, it should work. I've once tested a 9600M in my M570TU and it worked very well. But you have to do a bit a tinkering with the heat-sink to get it to fit properly. Generally this is not such a big issue given that the M570TU cooling system is designed for much more powerful cards.

Hey thanks for the quick response, that's just what I wanted to hear.
If you don't mind I have one more question,.

I assume I can also put a HP fx3700m (460734-001) in there as well, but will there be any over heating issues with a 3700m I heard they run hotter then the 9800?

Hey thanks again I really appreciate your quick response and further input.

    Cheers

There is some overheating, but with a proper thermal paste application and a bit of modding it should come down well within acceptable levels.

Most people just put the cards in at let them work, but not all cards are the same, some run a bit cooler others a bit hotter. It's better to take precautions. Besides, running your cards at temps 90+ C will sensibly reduce its lifespan.

Thanks again for your help, I found a new 3700 for about 200 so I ordered it.

But I have one more question if you would be so kind my good sir.

Last night I baked my dead 9800m GTX in the oven at 385 for 10 mins, and it worked I can't believe it! But does any one have an opinion as to how long it might last, or is it just a crap shoot.

    Cheers

Leave it to dry for a week without the power connected to it and remove the battery, then switch it on. It should work, just remember to give it a looong time to dry, to make sure there will be no problems.

Probably no. You can still send it to a Clevo repair center, they will have to replace the motherboard which will cost around 200 euro (plus shipping). Assuming that only the motherboard is affected.

    Hello.
Ive been thinking about upgrading my M570TU 280M. I bought the laptop late 2009. Is it possible to buy a better GPU that will work? Im thinking 480M or better.
