    Hi,

sorry, no, the GTX 280m is the best card you can put in this laptop, because the MXM type changed with the newer models, it´s now 3.0b instead of 2.1 (HE). Newer cards doesn´t fit physically.

I have the GTX 280M ... I want to overclock it but I can't find a simple guide how to do that. I have the nVidia Inspector software, but nothing changes when I try to change any values like shader clock speed etc.

Do I also need to download a special vBIOS from somewhere? Or is there a different thing I need to do? Thx.

If you don't know what you are doing. Then in order to avoid any damage that you might do, the best approach is to figure out things yourself and once you do, come here and ask if what you are about to do seems sane. If our answer is positive, then you are on the right track :).

So far Nvidia Software inspector is not the right way to go.

Hey everyone, I think I have no where else to turn so maybe you guys can help. I purchased a 5797 about two years about and I have been extremely happy with it. I kept having problems where a message would come up saying that the display driver has stopped responding and recovered, so I looked around for a fix. I changed it based off of recommendations on window's site Timeout Detection and Recovery of GPUs through WDDM and then went to restart my computer hoping it would fix the issue. I powered down via the shutdown key in windows and then when I went to restart my computer I get nothing. Most of the time the power just cuts out after about 4 seconds and nothing comes up on the screen at all, or about 1 out of 10 times it stays on and nothing appears. Sometimes only the fan that goes down to where the processor spins and the one that goes to the video card doesn't, or they both will spin. Regardless I am faced with a decision to either send it back to sager and have to pay to ship it to have it repaired (I think) or just put that money towards a new computer (something that is going to be difficult). I tried taking the battery out and leaving it just on A/C and I also tried retreading the RAM. Outside of that I am stuck, does anyone have any idea?

Thank you for your time, and any help is greatly appreciated.

I've recently bought an internal 2.5" drive that I power via USB, which works fine. But I can't seem to get the eSATA port to work. Inside the BIOS, it says that SATA port 3 is empty. Inside WinXP, it also doesn't detect the drive.

Any idea how to solve this?

PS If it's worth anything, I looked in the unit manager in XP. It does not list any 3rd sata port, which makes me believe there is a driver problem?

    1) When I ordered my laptop in May 2009, I found that when my laptop was on, whenever the ac adapter would unhook from my laptop, the screen would freeze. I would have to do a forceful close using the startup key and restart my laptop. When I contacted sager they said it was a faulty ac adapter and they sent me a new adapter and the problem went away. Last week it happened again and my screen froze. I had to have them send me a new ac adapter. I paid $88 for it. The problem has not gone with this new adapter and I will have to send it to them on monday for a different one.

    2) In january 2011, I started having a wierd problem. Every so often, my game would crash to the desktop and it would say windows kernel drive mode has stopped working and and has recovered. A minor annoyance at first. But now it has got so terrible that I cannot last in a game like Fallout: New Vegas for more than 10 sec. To resolve this issue, I reinstalled win 7 64bit, and used the driver updates from sager's website. The game still crashes and it says NVfallout has stopped working. I reinstalled the latest drivers from Nvidia and I get kernel drive mode error once again. I have been through several forums and read over several posts, followed their recommendations, but the issue has not resolved and I am at my wits end. I would like to request an RMA to resolve these issues. When I use the laptop for simple tasks like MSWORD, watching videos no problems and the VGA Temp is 43C. When games crash 75C. I clean the vents every three months by opening the bottom.

Believe me when I tell you that I love my laptop. But these problems are really beginning to me off (excuse). After reading these posts it seems to me that sager laptops don't last more than three years without s VGA problem. Normally I would just say to anyone to replace your system because it's not worth replacing parts or sending it in for repairs. I spent $1800 on this laptop and it's as expensive as the car I own. With what I make working for UPS, there is no way I can replace my machine. Not to sound like I'm complaining but there is no excuse for my machine to fail like this after few years. I called Sager and they say to send the machine in for repairs because they feel it could be a motherboard or vga card issue . I am really upset about the whole situation.

I would suggest to anyone that when they are considering a Sager go for it because when it works, it's capabilities are excellent but for those who are making a huge investment, consider not buying because the hassle once warranty expires is not worth it. They should consider Dell because their service in technical issues is quite good.

    1. Could be an AC adapter problem, could be something related to the power connector. Either way, it is nothing serious.

    2. Your video card is dying that is what is happening. The issue will get worse over time until you will get weird screen artifacts even when in Word. You can either try and bake your card or have it replaced. Also, in all likelihood, it is not the GPU itself that is defective, rather it is the video ram.

I am sorry to bring you bad news :(.

oh man, that sucks. I thought by getting my zalman cooler and monitering with hwmoniter I was going to avoid these issues for several years. I wonder how much xoticpc will help me with this issue. Any idea what a 280 gtx might cost.

If you don't want to pay for a new one, you could always try checking the NBR marketplace for users that are parting out old machines.

The 280M should cost around $450. You can get the 260M for around $300. You might also get them for cheaper on the NBR Market as Malibal said. Just remember, you are looking for MXM 2.1 cards.

I had an update from xoticpc about my laptop. Sager has done an initial assessment and have found a faulty gpu. They will finish thier assesment some time next week. I am quite disappointed that my gpu lasted less than two years. I am kicking myself for not getting the extended warranty. I loved my lappy too. I can't even afford repairs on my own.

Hey gents. Wondering if I could get some help: I think my GPU died, but I wan't to be certain before I spend $500 on a new card.

    Context:
It's a perfect 3 years to the day I got my M571TU. Irony?

Last night I started getting artifacts while playing games. I'd get them, everything would eventually freeze, black screen, and forced into a hard reset. It kept getting more frequent until 'the drivers for your VGA adaptor stopped working, but recovered' appeared.

This morning the artifacts started right after boot. Running in safe mode worked- so I uninstalled the drivers, got new ones, and tried again. Same problem except I started getting artifacts inside safemode (albiet it didn't freeze everything). I uninstalled the drivers again, rebooted from the windows menu, and...

...nothing. The machine powers on, but I have nothing on my display and the fans aren't spinning. The screen is backlit, I moved my ram around, and tried things without my battery. Still nothing.

Most of the early issues screamed 'new graphics card'. Now I'm not so sure?

That's the typical issue for vRAM going bad.

You can try baking the card... that might work.

Well I heard back from sager and they found the following errors with price for parts:

When unplug the ac power adapter the unit will freeze is caused by the MB a replacement MB is $575. Kernel mode drive failure is caused by a faulty gpu. Cost of replacing gtx 280m is $790

Depressing to say the least. I have decided to get the unit back and scrap as it is too expensive to repair. If anybody needs parts Pm me. I would be willing to sell for a decent price.

I'm considering it. The 3700 runs hotter than the 280 and I already had heat issues with the 9800... but for a $300 difference I can get good thermal paste and extra heat sinks.

I would agree with this, lower the clocks a bit and the voltage (Try 1V instead of 1.03V).

The 260m or 280m would be great, but spending $500 to fix an aging notebook doesn't seem worth it to me.

Too bad that there are no decently priced 3700m cards on ebay right now. At one point you could buy them new for $200.

HP one uses p398 board which I assume better compatibility as clevo version 9800mgtx/280m MXM2.1/260m MXM2.1 also use P398.
The lenovo one uses p612 board.

However, the lenovo 3700m has better 1.1ns memory chips vs HP one with only 1.25ns chips.

In conclusion, I suggest HP one which is cheaper.

The Lenovo card can also be overvolted up to 1.1v and overclocked to 700mhz core or so, where the HP cards don't overclock past 600mhz usually.

    I installed an HP 0.10 card in a M570TU v3.1

    1.0v - 560ish core 1000 memory - 85-90°c furmark (30 minutes)

    1.03v - 590ish core 1000 memory - furmark unstable (100°c+) but gamestable.

Card works flaweless flashed to a 280m (hdmi - 2d/3d clocks etc)

Tried external monitors without anything and then asked my work's IS department about it. They think it's probably the motherboard. Hopefully I can sell this thing for a little money towards the next notebook :(

P170HM looks like the current model of the M571TU. It'll be a few months before I can scrounge up cash for a new machine- anything in Clevo's pipe that's worth holding off for? 580M still the latest greatest?

The next batch of machines probably won't be until at least Q1 of 2012 with Ivy Bridge. For now, the Sandy Bridge models with 580m/6990 are the newest there are :)

Guys, need some support from somone who has deeper insight in ES Quad Core CPU's...
Recently decided to upgrade my m570TU (Sager 5796) CPU to quad core... One seller on eBay had decent prices for Q9100 QGMU QS ES, so went ahead and made the purchase. While the CPU was in transit updated motherboards BIOS to the latest versions found on this forum and the result is that the new quad core does not boot? I am pretty sure that the problem is with the Motherboard revision and it does not support quads... Or could the problem be with the Engineering Sample CPU?

not trying to bump old stuff, but is this the same model as M571TU?

if so, are there obvious problems i should look at when I receive my used one?

Yes, it's the same model. There are no obvious problems, but do check the hinges and for cracks in the plastic.

I think you need to buy a new keyboard.

Sad news. My laptop is shot. Something with the gpu it seems. I can rarely get in via Safe Mode, but can't get into regular mode. I've tried all sorts of ways to get it going, but I think the gpu is failing.
I even poped in my original HD to see if maybe some driver was the culprit, but it does the same thing.

I really wanted to wait for Ivy Bridge or at least after the holidays, considering this laptop is still viable and worked great. I guess I'll have to buy something quicker.

I'm considering the Sager NP8170 (P170HM). Just wish they had the switchable graphic or optimus already!

Or maybe I should look for a replacement GPU on Ebay for now. Was it the 280gtx if memory serves?
Time to dig through this forum's archives *sigh*.
