Question, I'm usally going to have this laptop plugged in. Do i need to take the battery out? Seeing as i'm always going to peoples houses i'll just plug it in. But i;v heard its bad to have it plugged in with the battery in.

My NP862 has 4 gb ram and I just got the base level CPU; the p8700, as I don't really need a super bad- processor in my laptop. I may upgrade the CPU some time in the future, when prices come down. I am upgrading the optical drive to a Blu Ray next week.

Some people remove their battery when plugged in because it may allow your battery to have a longer life overall.

However few people actually do this because when the battery if fully charged the charging system turns off. Therefore any extended life of the battery is so minimal it probably isn't worth the effort.

I installed my Windows 7 upgrade and updated most of my drivers for good measure (including the hot key driver). The only thing that isn't working like it did in Vista is the on screen volume graphic that appeared when you use Function F5 or F6 to raise or lower the volume.

Did I miss a driver for that? Any thoughts?

yes, there is one over on the sager website. You need to uninstall the current one and then install the new one.

I'm afraid you'll have to plug it in as the battery itself is one of the four "feet"..

Hey I've been looking everywhere but can't find any info on this. I have the same laptop, and was wondering how exactly you go about setting up the surround sound. I have a pair of surround sound headphones but am not sure whether the surround is a 3.5mm optical, some form of 3.5mm digital or whether you need to use all three jacks for analog. Since you said you had it set up I was wondering if you could help?

Also, to anyone seeing this thread it is an amazing laptop. Pumping to a 1080p monitor i can play virtually any game on the highest settings. The build quality is great and I can't recommend it enough.

Welcome to the NBR forums. :)

this notebook can only do surround sound output by using SPDIF Coaxial.... NOT optical.
    - your speakers/receiver/headphones has to support SPDIF coxial
    - the connections should be 3.5mm mono (from the notebook) to single RCA (to the external sound output device).

I went over this a number of times on this site.

So after 1 year and 66 days, my laptop revealed its first major problem to me.My 9800 GT started acting up yesterday, windows (7) kept telling me the driver has failed but restored succesfully. It happends once in a blue moon so I tought nothing of it.

The next morning the driver kept failing and causing the dreaded; BsoD, Loop freezing and restarting, Dots/line on the screen, Purple/Pink screens and I think I even saw H1N1 in the corner of my screen.

Called my retailer and I can bring my baby in on monday, estimated omgwhendoigetitback time is about 2 to 3 weeks, according to the Costumer Support Rep.I hope he's lying. If not, gues the girlfriend finally gets what she wants.- attention

Secretly I'm kind of glad my 9800GT decided to die so young, hopefully they don't have them in stock anymore and it gets replaced by a GTX260* :D

    * Eventhou I know I'll get a refurbished/used 9800 instead, I'm allowed to dream!

Sorry to hear about your card.

If its just the videocard module, that can be replaced in less than 5 minutes.

have you ever opened your notebook monthly to clean out the vents and fans from dust clogs?

do you check your GPU temps while gaming and such?

Yup I've opened this bad boy so many time the screws are starting to wear out :p.I dust it out every other month.

I've been monitoring the temps 24/7 since I got my machine, it crashes at idle temps ( idle being like 36~42 for the gpu and 22~28 for the cpu).
Max my GPU has been while gaming is 73C and 57 for the CPU, think those temps are no where near the danger zone when it comes to overheating.

I got a glimpse of chain BsoD, apparently nvlddmkm.sys/dll is causing the problem which doesn't help me much because that could be anything.

Atm its a guaranteed BsoD/crash leaving Aero on or trying to watch a HD movie or playing any 3D intensive game.
    3Dmark and Furmark don't last 5 secs.

CPU and HDD intensive benchmarks pass.

I think its between the ram and GPU, I'll try taking out a ram sticks tomorrow morning.

    *edit*
I remember there was this one time where I tought I turned my laptop off, and put it in my travel bag.At my friends house I left my bag by the window( it was a sunny day ) and I wasen't thinking.
The bag ( a black one aswell )with my laptop on, sat in the sun for about 1/2 hours, when I opened the bag and tried to take it out I couldn't even hold it thats how sizzling hot my laptop was, me not thinking once again trying to boot it up while still flaming hot, it didn't boot.
I let it cool down, and it worked again- I tought to my self "There's no way a regular machine would have survived that, GG clevo"

This was about 2 weeks ago, this might be the aftermath of that day :p

nvlddmkm.sys/dll is an nvidia file, so likely it is a gpu problem

I tried using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, to overclock my QX9300.

    It didn't work of course.

I found the one used for desktops here.

Supposedly, there's a laptop-specific version, that is not available on the internet.

    Hi there,

So I tried to install a Q9100 and put new memory in. 4GB DDR3 1333. Now when I try to power it up, nothing appears on the screen. I see the green light saying that system is powered up and green light on bluetooth. No sounds or beeps. I can hear the fan running. No harddrive activity light. I put everything back in twice. What could be wrong? Did I just ruin my 8662!!!

    Thank you

It's the latest one that supports Q9100. I did confirm it with rjtech. It was purchased as a barebone from them less than 2 months ago. Any help would be great! Is it because of the 1333 RAM?

    Thank you

Thanks for taking the time. I locked the cpu. just double checked it. I also tried with one ram module and the same result. This time, I heard a small sound coming from the top left of the laptop, top of the optical drive, but there is still nothing on the screen.

    Edit : Its V3.0c revision

Update : When I press the capslock, led light responds. Also pressing any of the letters and function keys results in a loud BEEP! So it's not entirely dead?

    Thank you

Did you buy the system completely barebones, or do you have other RAM and a different CPU you can try?

Sager has told us in the past that they only recommend Kingston and Hynix memory in their systems, and we have seen a couple of customers using different brands left unable to boot, so my first thought would be the RAM rather than the processor.

It was a barebone. Unfortunately I don't have another RAM or CPU that I can try. I wasn't aware that different brand memory had this effect! I will try to find Kingston or Hynix.

Would these be okay? Should I go with the "Intel XMP Ready" one?

The XMP just means the memory is easier to overclock, so you're safe going with either of those two.

I put in the kingston 4gb ddr3 modules today and it didnt work. Nothing coming on the screen. I called rjtech and they said to make sure I locked the cpu. I double checked it. I'm thinking maybe it's the processor.

    ^^Hope you resolve your problem.

I have another question, and didn't want to make a thread just to do it.

I am pretty set on the NP8662, I was just wondering besides undervolting, when I'm on the go or in class. Is it possible to do a quick downgrade video card swap from the NVidia GTX 260M? Something where I could downgrade to a 512mb lower end video card to save some juice? Or is there an app. that I can use to run an extreme power saver mode so I could get like 4hrs. out of the battery?

I would already be using the 28w P9700

It is possible to downgrade to a lower video card if you can find one, though I think it would be easier flashing a heavily underclocked and undervolted BIOS onto your GPU. You should have absolutely no problem hitting three hours or more on a M860TU.

In which no notebook on the market has an XMP ready BIOS, thus making XMP RAM no better than value RAM. If by overclocking you mean flashing the firmware on the modules to lower timings with Thaiphoon or similar, then it's also a no. The XMP memory will be just as tedious to overclock as non-XMP memory. The XMP memory kit will boot at standard JEDEC while the hard flashed non-XMP kit will boot with tighter timings out of the box. Yes, mnd99's notebook can boot with XMP RAM, but it would defeat the purpose of paying a premium for "overclockable" memory when he can't access the Intel utility in the BIOS.

I think I would just end up dishing out $130 to get an extra battery if needed.

Are/Can people put the highest Quad Extreme mobile processors and GTX 280M's in the M860TU? or would they run into overheat issues?

If you had to guess...Is it even possible to do a LED swap/mod and would it be saving that much power?

    @SovietSunrise:

Yep, no real point to XMP memory yet, but I guess the memory manufacturers are following Intel's lead and trying to push for more overclocking options in notebooks. The point was simply that either option is a safe and fully functional option. Typically in a case like that, I recommend going for the less expensive of the two unless there is a significant difference in memory timings.

Agreed. A second battery would be a better choice.

Users have dumped the QX9300 successfully into their M860TU's and are happy with it. None have been reporting any heat issues when paired with a GTX 260M so far.

The backlight is part of the LCD panel itself. It would be easier and cheaper just to buy a new panel and replace the whole thing yourself. However, finding a suitable panel that will fit the brackets is the hard part unless you are willing to mod to a further extent.

Right. Even desktop users aren't that into XMP memory yet. I don't think notebook manufacturers are ready to jump ship.

Since both kits cost almost the same, it would be better to go with the regular kit to get the lower timings.

Pretty much, the only time you're asking for trouble is when you pair a QX9300 with a GTX 280M.

Usually M860TU users would downclock the GTX 280M to GTX 260M clocks of 550/1375/800. It will still run fairly well. But yes, a QX9300 and GTX 280M does not leave much room for GPU overclocking without thermal issues.

I'm thinking about buying one of these tomorrow during Xoticpc's Black Friday sale.

I'm hoping to get it for around $1200. Would that be a good deal? It's been over a year since this beast came out.

Sadly, neither Xoticpc's nor PowerNotebooks.com's Black Friday sale includes this model.

However it is on sale at $300 off, and that sale will continue while supplies last.

My nephew has a problem with his M860: Today the powerbrick somehow fried ...

He called his reseller (the laptop is only half a year old) but they told him that Clevo has stopped making this model and that it would take 1-2 months before he gets a replacement brick. But since he's studying IT, he can't realy afford to wait that long ... Hell, even a week is to much, since his exams are arround the corner.

What do you guys recommend as a quick solution ? We were thinking of getting one of those 'universal notebook chargers/adapters' from a local computershop. Does that sound like a good idea ? :) What do we need to pay attention to when picking one ?

Well, if I'm honest, we are not 100% sure that it's the PSU ... But since he could still use the notebook on battery power and has some basic knowledge of PSU's, (he had a course at school that discussed the topic) he's fairly certain that that's the problem.

a dab of Contact Cleaner or WD-40 on a paper towel should be able to clean most of the scuffs off the metal areas.

Windows should download one, as soon as you activate Fn+F12.

Are any of you guys running Windows 7 x64 on the 8660 w/Geforce 9800GTS?

I have been having problems since updating from an older Bios to 866bv216s2 which I got from Sager. The computer continuously reboots after loading into Windows 7.

I have tried complete reformat/reinstall using both ACHI and IDE mode (I have a Corsair SSD). I have also tried putting in an older laptop harddrive. No dice. Most of the time it cannot even make it through the complete install without rebooting.

I have run Windows memory tests which check out fine.

If I revert back to an older Bios/Firmware (86TU0606) things are fine.

My question is for those of you successfully running Win7x64, what version of the BIOS do you have, and where did you get it?

Sager support was awesomely non-helpful saying I should run Vista. LOL.

    Thank you much.

thank you. i have already tried the 17 firmware/bios. the bios now shows windows 7 as one of the operating system.

unfortunately the reboot problems still persists. i have rolled back to 06. The reboot has gone away but i still have other issues related to things they seem to have fixed since.
