There is at least one bug in BIOS 17 that prevents dynamically changing the boot device that I've experienced.

Your best bet is to just buy one from your original vendor. They run about $75 plus shipping.

There lies the problem $75 for spare power supply is quite expensive. But I'll just eat it if I have to. Can't afford it at the moment so I guess it'll just be plug and unplug for the time being.

has anyone found undervolting necessary? The laptop I'm receving was built in July, so I will probably be re-doing the thermal paste to MX-3 that I have.

It shouldn't be necessary with a 'P' class C2D. I undervolted the Extreme Core 2 Duo in this machine and it levels in the mid 30's perhaps going to the high 40's under load. Even without the undervolt it never went near the 80's let alone a dangerous 100'C. A 'P' Class should be hitting temps in the 30s quite easily without undervolting.

Reapplying new paste is a good practice but changing the paste won't make a dramatic difference. Obviously, make sure to clean out the vents if you haven't done so.

Not at all. I bought a Zalman NC2000 but after testing the rig out without it put it back in the box. A waste of money - I'm gonna sell it with the laptop when I get around to doing so. Partly, I think it equates to being in a cooler climate. While the majority of the summers have been rosy red in the UK this decade the last two haven't been.
The laptop itself has never overheated since. I've even considered putting a 3700M in but no longer feel there's much point if it needs to go.

The other part is that I was in an extremely well-ventalated room for a while. I've just moved somewhere smaller and have seen some temp rises, it now idles around 40. :(

Anyone know where to get a replacement fan for a M860TU? The dfs531105mc0t model fan in my M860TU has started making clicking/ticking sounds lately. The warranty is out and Eurocom might change an arm and a leg for a replacement fan.

Your best bet is to just enquire about it first. They aren't gonna charge you for a quote. And afterward, if it is expensive, shop around the other resellers.

If you're in the US, you can always call Sager, too. Shipping might be faster, since Eurocom has to ship in two legs to the US (or at least they did last time I checked). I really don't think either EC or Sager would charge an arm and a leg for the fan, and I would strongly suggest buying through an authorized Clevo OEM just to ensure compatibility :).

    Hey y'all,

Does the M865tu have an IR receiver built in?

I'm looking to buy an expresscard remote and would like to know if ones with IR transmission will work with the old lappie.

    Thanks in advance!

Why did Clevo lock (multipliers, voltages, FSB) the M860TU bios? Do they hate us 15.6" laptop users? :(

Could they be convinced to release an unlocked BIOS for enthusiasts? The M570TU does have an unlocked BIOS, how hard would it be for them to release a similar BIOS for the M860TU?

As do I, but i'm starting to think that's it's becoming 'just a computer' instead of the gaming laptop it used to be...call me cynical but it's just the way it seems to me, especially when I don't think it'll be able to handle the new games, like BC2....mind you I do have a super low budget/low spec m860tu

A huge part of you problem is that you only have 2GB RAM. Upping your count to 4GB would really do you some good.

I have tried all different settings/resolutions/drivers and I cant get the game playable in 32man servers. on lowest settings I get 30fps which dips down to 15-20fps in big firefights/explosions.

Now with my desktop i5 750 and ati 5770 I play at 1080p all high with AA/AF full and get 40+ fps at all times. I downclocked the cpu to 1.6ghz to simulate a i7 720qm and still get good fps so I think it is an nvidia problem on my rig unlss an i7 720qm is a lot more powerful than a q9000

maybe a little more powerfull but bc2 is designed for any quadcore, so the q9000 can handle pretty good and wont be the cause of low framerate.

i think in an nvidia driver or a game patch.

I have tried 5 different sets of drivers. I tried as many settings/tweaks as I can think of, still no joy.

I do think it is nvidia related though as the card is hardly utilised on the GTX260m (max of 50% logged with gpuz and evga precision)

Whereas on my desktop the ati 5770 is fully utilised!

Ah thanks. I researched a bit and to share what i've found. I know Eurocom offers services to swap motherboards for $250 or so. RJtech also has the cheapest 260m with the price of $401~ shipped. If anyone finds anything, it'd be great if they could share as well.

    hey folks,
i'm looking to add some RAM to my m860tu. Currently I have 2GB and am looking to add another 2GB. Which of the following would be the best module to purchase:

    Patriot Signature DDR3 PC3-8500 1066MHz 2GB 204-pin SODIMM

    Kingston ValueSelect 2GB PC3-8500 DDR3 1066Mhz SO-DIMM

    2GB PC3-8500 1066MHZ DDR3 SODIMM LOWHALOGEN

    CRUCIAL MEMORY 2G DDR3-1066

I'm fairly certain that is the type of RAM I should be looking at spec wise, but what's the difference, asides price? Should I just grab the cheapest stuff, and does it have to match the current RAM in my laptop? I'm looking at those stores pretty much exclusively because they are the only stores I know of in my area (asides FutureShop, BestBuy, and the likes). I wouldn't mind purchasing online if there are any good options for shipping in Canada. I would prefer not having to order from the US.

As always, any help would be appreciated! Cheers fellas!

Another question for all you smart folks out there: what components can be upgraded in my m860tu and how hard would it be to do it on my own? (skill level: low to medium)

Edit: mostly interested in CPU upgrades/GPU upgrades

Well for the CPU best you can do is a QX9300, it's pretty straght forward if you've ever done it before.
Find therico if you can, in his sig is all the service manuals for every clevo. :)
    Just awseome!
Now about the GPU, not so easily done, there have been members that installed a 280GTX but it required some modification( something about the backplate) anyway it's not so easy is what I'm trying to say.
To tell you the truth the 260Gtx is still a pretty powerful card in it's own right.
I still put in the top 5 best GPU's out now.

Thanks for the reply IKAS. The QX9300 is way out of my price range for an upgrade, but it's good to know that upgrades are possible. I guess if I am looking to upgrade, a Quad core is the way to go to make sure it'll last me a few more years.

As for the GPU, what does the 9800m GTS compare to these days? If I upgraded the CPU, would the GPU still be powerful enough, or would it be a bottleneck?

maybe I should just build a desktop...

You might need to make sure that you have the right motherboard revision to accept quad cores first, although considering my answer to your second question, depending on what you do, that point may be slightly moot.

Your GPU is probably bottlenecking you already, truth to tell, at least in terms of high end, FPS style gaming. It's not a bad card, and it'll run existing games just fine, but in terms of bottlenecks, it's probably the problem, as has been the case with pretty much everything in the past several years.

 I didn't know that, I always though my CPU was the bottleneck to my performance in games. After some though I don't think I'll invest any more money into my laptop to upgrade it; just doesn't seem cost efficient at all... then again I guess I didn't buy a gaming laptop to be cost efficient in the first place, but that was 2+ years ago now. Times have changed

oh yea, that's definitely happening; it's a feasible upgrade :)

I'm sure I'll notice some increases in performance with the RAM upgrade, but that will be about it for laptop upgrades. I'm going to start researching how to build my own desktop. The guide I found on the NBR forums is pretty good, although some of it (i.e. installing the CPU chip into the right mobo, and the thermal pastes, etc etc.) might be a bit complicated for my skill level. I'm always up for a good challenge though, maybe I'll make that a summer project.

Mmhmm. There's a reason why gamers are always pushing for the notebooks with SLI; the point is the improved graphical performance. With a few exceptions, most games (except maybe the most recent) run very well on a C2D at 2 GHz or higher. This is not to say that you wouldn't see some advantages from a higher end CPU, but for those pursuing FPS, SLI and high end GPUs are much more important. See, for example, the M11x, which has a (relatively) weak CPU to go with its stronger GPU.
