    Hi,

I own this MTU860 for a little more than a year by now and it started to show some problems.
I reboots everytime I load Windows Aero Theme and sometimes it reboots even without loading it (takes longer, tho).
I get NO BSOD or any errors whatsoever. It just reboot. Not a single glich on the screen.
First of all I suspected of high temps. Loaded both cpu-z and gpu-z. Both showing normal temps for idle.
Then I emailed sager for mail support and the tech said to test the ram with memtestx86 proggie. Tested for 15h without a single error.
Of course I suspect of the VGA, but when I get to run a game, it runs smoothly like no problem is happening till I get rebooted (again, no cpu+gpu above normal temps).
One other thing is that I updated the BIOS to a newer one, even tho i dont know why I did it. I was drunk while I did it and don`t remember if any problem happened while I did it (please don`t laught at this). Now I am afraid of trying it again to a newer one (it`s been 4 months since the problem first started)
I also formated the machine to a clean Win7 Home Premiun 64bit install with fresh drivers, no luck there either.
I sent it to a local store and they have not spotted where the problem is.

Please guys, help me out here. I live in Brazil, so it`s expensive to send it over Sager for repair.

    Best regards,
    slownumb.

    Well,
I tried some searching at the thread and found a guy with the same problem as I have and he solved it by downgrading his BIOS to a previous one. Gonna try it and will post here my results.
If any1 has any other solution pls help.

    It works now.
It seems the latest BIOS was the problem.
It works like a charm for some minutes now... will try games when i come back from work.
Tho I lost my Sager brand when booting the NB, but that doesn`t matter much.

and no, i am not an autist, talking to myself 3 posts in a row... lol :D

How is everyone's machine holding up? I got mine as soon as they were available, kinda crazy to think it's pushing two years old. Still runs like a champ though. I must admit though, I'm a bit jealous of all the newer laptops with their LED screens, quadcores, chiclet-style keyboards, etc.

My machine is still holding up, its been nearly a year but im annoyed by the heat.

My HDD hit 70C the other day so I dissembled the fan casing cleaned it out well and also took apart my zalman nc2000 cleaned that and installed some aluminum mesh in order to prevent dust from getting into the cooler.

Right now im testing it out without a base so the cooler hits the entire open base of the notebook.

How do you drill the bottom cover without cracking it?

I can't imagine how the HDD could get up that high.

    - This was just during normal use? Even during a hard defrag my 7200.4 will hit 60C, 62C max.

    - Which HDD do you have?

    - Do you have the Intel Storage Matrix installed?

    70C is just, wow.

    2) 500gb wd 5400 rpm

    3)yup

Its currently running at 35C with the base removed sitting on the zalman.

Mine is still going strong. It even survived drinking a cup of coffee.

It's not at 100% though. The Silent Mode button cycles on/off all the time, unless I hold it down. I need to figure out how to either permanently disable it, or rig a way to have pressure constantly applied.

Has anyone had their network chipset suddenly die? Mine's not acknowledging any sort of connection, even though it's detected by Windows. The cable and router are not the problem, as I've tested them with my desktop.

    Hi guys,

So I've had my m860tu since release and it has been great until about 1 month ago. The laptop started just blackscreening when I'm gaming while running some other apps at same time (explorer, itunes, ventrilo, etc). Now most of the time I can't even get to the desktop without the screen just blackscreening. The only way I can get it to work is turning on Silent Mode while windows is loading but obviously this reduced my laptops performance a lot and a couple games which should be able to run smoothly are not.

So my question is does this mean my graphic card is dead? If so, is there anyway I can replace the card myself?

Any other help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks a lot.

It may mean a dead GPU, but it may also just mean it is overheating. You didn't mention this, but have you tried opening the bottom panel and cleaning out the system fans with a canister of compressed air? (When you do this, also spray into the ventilation grilles along the sides of the notebook, as this gives better access to the heatsinks)

If that doesn't work, you should contact your reseller to see what replacement options are available to you.

I can only speak for our customers, but we haven't had any reports of spontaneous LAN controller deaths. You may want to do a visual inspection of the ethernet port to make sure the fragile metal wires inside have not been broken.

If nothing looks broken, one of our techs' favorite tactics or making sure it isn't just a Windows issue (if reinstalling the driver didn't work) is booting off of an Ubuntu CD (which you can download from ubuntu.com) in the "Try Ubuntu" mode. It doesn't install anything, but gives you a fully functional OS. If the network controller is alive, it will work here. If it doesn't, the system may need to be serviced.

Weird that you mention this, but my LAN connection wasn't working for the longest time until I realized that somehow the "IPv4" settings had been changed to connect to a specific IP instead of the "Automatically Detect Settings" setting. I was using wireless for the longest time because I just couldn't figure it out. Now, I've never gone in and changed this myself, so I'm guessing it's some sort of Windows problem?

    Hello,

So after some dusting and reapplying thermal compound the problem is still there. I can only get my computer to run in Silent Mode. If I don't use Silent Mode the computer just blackscreens when the desktop loads and I have to reboot by manually turning off the laptop by pressing the power button. I've already tried other stuff such as reformatting, new nvidia drivers, old nvidia drivers, etc.

Since Silent Mode means the cpu is downclocked and gpu is unaffected (I think?), I'm guessing this means my CPU needs replacing?? If so, does anyone have a good suggestion for an upgrade cpu in the range of ~$200? I'm currently using [email protected].

Any other suggestion/insights would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

I recommend that you send it in for a diagnostic, then decide its future from there.

CPUs so rarely malfunction, that all bets have to go on it being a GPU or motherboard issue.

Will a 9800M GT or GTS 160M heatsink work a 100% with a GTX 260M? Or will there be some celsius to gain by using a GTX 260M heatsink?

How often do you guys update your GPU drivers? I haven't touched mine for a while, since it has been working fine, but I'm wondering whether I should look for an update. Any newer driver in particular you'd recommend from GTX 260M?

Thanks Kevin. I changed my P9500 to a T9900 and my GTS 160M to a GTX 260M and the temps are great, but my idle temps are a bit too high. Load temps are better than before actually. How can i lower the idle temp? Where is the ACPI (TZ0) placed in the laptop? It idles at 50c which is 10-13c more than before.

How's the system noise with this laptop doing basic surfing. If i buy this laptop my wife will probably use it occasionally.

And to keep it cooler would I be better off with the GTX 285M???

I think you`re mixing it up. M860 uses MXM 2.1 III, GTX 285M uses MXM 3.0b. Why would a GTX 285M be more cooler than a GTX 260M? 285M has more shaders and are clocked higher and should therefor produce more heat.

Noise is good imo, but before I upgraded I could surf with loow temps which reduced the fans to a minimum, even lower rpm than with silent mode activated. After upgrade the fans kicks in a nothc higher, but not bad at all.

I don`t think this is a good purchase for occasionally use.

    50C is completely normal, for a T processor + 65W GPU. I experienced similar jumps, as I went from P8600 -> T9800 -> Q9200, and 9800M GT -> GTX 260M.

You can undervolt your T9900, to try to bring the idle down a few.

Ahh, thanks, made me feel better. I`ve already undervoltet it using RMclock, but the VID at 6x SLMF/normal is as high as 1.0125 at lowest. Anyhow I can get more options there? I`ve edited the registry to take use of the 11.5x multiplier, but don`t know how to add VIDs.

    HI everyone.

Im going to get my m860etu today or tomorrow. its being shipped to me from somewhere in my city since 1:28 am today.

as you may be able to tell, i have ALL of my other essential parts already. So ill be putting it all together having never worked with this laptop before...
is there anything in particular i should know, or keep in mind? or any way i can tell if there is a single component causing failure to boot?

    lets see...
-im also using a non OEM 120w adapter adjustable to 20v
    should be ok
-an fx3700 gpu that me and PRADA here bought from the same seller, apparently untested (ive heard no word from him)
-an ES q9200 i got a LONG time ago, and have never tested

-no hard drive as of yet
-no lcd unless it will work with a standard LG/Phillips CCFL WXGA 15.4"

hopefully it will all work :D what do you think?
    thanks!

Does your M86 also conclude LCD converter? And how is your 3700M looks like. there are 2 types of 3700M, one works and the other doesn´t.

You'd have to find someone who is still selling them, or an owner looking to sell theirs used.

    Neither is very likely, unfortunately.

LVDS is a standard interface. it will take a little hacking and splicing, that is all. maybe some power regulation.
with the simplicity of the way LCDs work nowadays and especially backlights it just shouldnt be too much of an issue when i get a cable that fits my LG led lcd.

here is a pic of my fx3700. is one MXM HE and the other MXM IV or something? i hope it works.

i just got it in the mail!!! yayy!!!!! :D

@kaltmond: the fx3700 plugs in fine

but of course not ALLL is well.....
i bought this simply by asking an Ebay seller if they would take it apart for me. if someone had said they could do this with say a sony z, i would not trust them at all. but i know how easy this laptop is to service..

! its so simple! aaaghgh!!

    anyway,
-its missing more than a few screws. 1 of them is for the CPU heatsink however, so i only have 3
-he didnt include all the GPU heatsink parts or screws
-i think one of the wifi antennae might be missing. weird

not so bad, really. the copper gpu casing for his gtx260 probably would not have fit, right? its my highest priority to get the copper casing so my gpu will stay relatively cool and i can actually use it. oh, but there was one more thing:
-the copper where the heatsink contacts the GPU AND CPU is HORRIBLY scratched up, more than a few long, deep and jagged zig zags on each.

literally everything else i would have been completely fine with, but this is really annoying. so i guess ill have to contact him and i dunno work something out :(

maybe i can just return it to him for some money, then buy a completely new heatsink and get new screws and correct GPU heatsinks along with.

................other than all that though, it started up and recognized my q9200, did not recognize the fx3700 but displayed bios properly on a WXGA lcd. ram is ok too. which is great! i bought that q9200 MONTHS ago and hadnt tested it.

but yeah... anybody who can sell me some heatsink parts, that would be great. ill keep you all posted, and youll know when i start benching :)

Well, that 3700m is from TP W700, we need one from HP 8730W. Try full load the 3700M, the system will shut down once GPU reached 85°C more or less. And the system fan will run @ max speed even in idle because it cannot read the temp sensor of that card.

if it cant read the temp sensor and the fan turns on all the way, then why does it overheat?

when i turned it on the fan didnt go on full.

it sounds like it would only overheat if the fan did NOT turn on because it cant read the temp sensor.

is the only problem insufficient cooling?

well i took your word for it and got an HP card, even managed to return my Lenovo one even tho my time was supposed to be up.

i still need a heatsink though! where can i find a new one?
the seller seems to think its not bad for cooling to have it all scratched up. and i dont have a copper case to my card or screws for the gpu heatsink either

I know they are hard to find. Anyone here knows the market price of a GTX 280M MXM 2.1?

    He said it was sold.

    quad core.

i bought from him, that laptop might be the one sitting here on my buffet if he said it was sold...

Edit: he was able to sell it to me without ram, hdd, lcd, cpu, gpu, and dvd drive which says something... EXCEPT for the fact that he scratched up the heatsink.
go figure. regardless of that... it was 300. good deal? bad?

im happy... mostly that i got it instead of an HP 8530 tho

How much would the notebook cost me if the GTX260M is replaced with a GTX280M on that setup?
