Yeah, that would be a good idea. Too bad I ordered a Sager 8850 already. It's about time that I replace my Gateway M6816.

He parted it out for me.
It came with everything other than what I listed (except for the GPU heatsink case, and I didnt buy the adapter from him because I already had one)

You can use any standard LCD screen with this laptop.

Interesting. I've been needing a backup M860TU for parts.

What's the seller's name on Ebay?

    hey folks,
didn't want to start a new thread so i'll just ask here. When I turn my computer on, Windows (Vista Business) loads in black and white. Everything (Windows boot screen + login screen) is black and white (or greyscale) until my desktop loads up and then the colors kick in and everything is fine. This has just recently started happening, and I haven't changed anything. What's going on here? Any insight would be appreciated... thanks!

Yea, I was thinking of just going for a fresh install and upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. I've been running Vista for a few years now, and the only reason I haven't upgraded is because I haven't had any problems with it so far! :)

On that note, will Windows 7 Professional (32-bit) work on my m860tu? Anything I should be aware of before installing? Will the stock drivers be compatible, especially since this model is discontinued now?

    Thanks for the help!

After going from Vista to W7, I have some crackling sound coming from my external speakers when listening to music. Any driver you guys recommend to fix it? I currently use Realtek HD Audio Manager 6.0.1.6151, ALC 662.

    Good Afternoon,

I was wondering if anyone can help me figuring out what the optimal configuration for my rig should me. I've been reading benchmarks and game performance reports from similar rigs and they've seemed significantly more robust than mine. I'm happy with the lappy for the most part, but anything I can do to improve performance. I have a clevo M860TU I bought from xoticpc a year ago, and I was wondering if my performance was suboptimal or standard for this group of components.

    My rig:

    Clevo M860TU
    p8600 core duo 2.4ghz
Nvidia 9800M with the latest drivers from Nvidia.com (I've tried some drivers from LaptopVideo2Go, but I've had a few heat/instability issues, but I'm trying some others to see if it would work)
    4 gigs of ram
And I am running windows 7 64 bit.

    Performance:
    3DMark06 basic at 1280 x 1024, AF x 1, AA x 0: 6630
    Far Cry 2, 1280 x 800, AF x 8, AA x 0, high settings: mid to low 20's in most areas, playable.
Fallout 3, 1680 x 1050, AF x 8, AA x 0, high settings: teens to low 20's in most outdoor areas, above 30's in most interior areas.
    Mass effect 2 1680 x 1050, AA x 0, high settings: Mid to Low 20's.

I'm wondering if this is the performance I should expect from this laptop, or is there a bottleneck/setting affecting my experience.

Anything info that anyone can supply, or if you have a similar setup-- your performance experience.

    Thanks for your help,
    FugaDraconis

Have you set it to high performance in the power options? Do you play with silent mode on? What temps do you get?

Also are you plugged into AC or on battery, and what is your graphics card (9800M, but is it a GTS, GT or GTX)

My card is a 9800M GTS. I run in between 90 and 100 centigrade in most instances. It's plugged in and set to high performance.

I've tried some more drivers from LV2G, and it's helped some, but not still to the number's I've seen.

I'm not sure what silent mode is, but the fan is pretty far from silent, if that helps.

I've read that the CPU is rarely the bottleneck, but could it be in this instance?

I`m guessing it gets too hot so it downclocks your laptop. Clean your fan and heatsing from dust. Reapply the thermal paste is a good idea too.

Does your framerate start normal, then dip after a while, or is it low from the get go?

Your numbers show that you're having an issue.

It does, I'll first try cleaning the fan and vent area. Because the issue happens even if I have it on my passive cooling lapdesk.

I'll try cleaning my fan and vents, hopefully that won't be an issue afterwards.

Does anyone know what type of performance I should expect from this machine?

Back when I had a 9800M GTS and P9500, I would get over 9000 in 3dMark06 at stock settings.

The only picture I have of it though is overclocked:

Passive cooling lapdesk is basically a lapdesk that keeps the air flowing freely, as opposed to active cooling which uses fans to move air through the laptop's vents or across its surface.

Update: The problem was with the fan and the vent system-- it was absolutely caked with dust. It was just a simple matter of opening up the machine and using canned air. My 3Dmark06 score went from a low of 5500 (and an average of 6600 or) to a consistent score of over 9000 (which completely satisfies me).

Idle temperatures are now stable at 49 C, plateauing to the high 70's C when stressed. I might consider OCing, but as of now, I'll just enjoy the significant performance boost that came with the simplest solution.

Thanks for the solution and the help!

Glad you got it sorted. Just to clarify, there are some 'passive coolers' that are like gel packs that cool the base of laptops, but they only work on laptops that don't have the air intakes on the bottom - in our case they'd completely block the vents!

Hey guys, I've had my M860TU for almost 2 years now, and I've run into two minor problems that I was hoping someone could shed some light on.
    1. My fan makes this constant clicking noise while running on a lower speed. I can't hear it when I'm playing games and it is spinning at a fast rate.
    2. My silent mode button does nothing. I'm not sure if it's the actual button or something else. Is there a way I can enable silent mode without having to press the button? The other two hot keys work.
    Thank you!

I can answer #1. Quite a few have had their fan start making a grinding noise as it gets older, mine included. Your only option is to order a replacement.

Yeah, I haven't replaced mine, because my machine is on its death bed, so I'm saving up for something new.

This build is a beast though. It's survived two cups of coffee, dying and coming back to life each time.

Hi all. long time no lounge :p
    A few things.
-I was using cheap 120w universal adapter for my m86 for a while which scared me a little. First point of interest is that my adapter was universal, so I tried running at 19.5v instead of 20v. I could find no change whatsoever in the way my system was acting. After 2 of the compatible adapter tips completely broke/melted I gave up on it... because I've had a Dell 130w 19.5v ;) and its plug was slowly falling apart too.
Im currently running my m860etu with a Dell pa-4e 130w slim adapter no problem. my soldering job wasnt great and the plug is not good quality, but I just ran furmark which got my gpu up to 90c and the plug wasnt getting hot at all.
so thats that. +for a very nice slim adapter & angled plug. -for short cable length from the capacitor to the plug and no indicator LED.

2 quick questions for long time m86 owners:
-How do you have your BIOS configured? there are so many options!
-Where does the screen cable connect to the motherboard? Any 40-pin LCD cables that share this connector? if its the one right next to the GPU, we would have a lot of luck I think finding a compatible 40-pin or even LED cable from another manufacturer.

What do you think it is that actually makes the sound?
I posted a while back that the fan for the Dell XPS m1530 is actually the same model, but the casing is different. Perhaps the internal fan could be transplanted into the original casing.

Thanks all ;) I'm loving this laptop :D

I've got a fan i might be getting rid of soon, dont know how old it is. about to replace it with a 30mm blower...

of course you all know the easiest way to fix your fans is by poking around and shockmounting it with tape and a rubber band. so i dunno what your complaining about :p :D jk

    Hmm
I'm not so sure about that, considering its the same forcecon model (with a different shroud) as the dell xps m1530 and apparently the msi gx620 and 630 as well....
wouldnt they have noticed the same problem?

agh these fans really arent worth the effort

My 9800m GT crapped out on me a few weeks ago. Just out of the blue. I'm pretty hard up for cash right now though, so I put it in the oven and that actually worked. I don't know how long that will last for or if I can do it again when/if it fails again. Damn Nvidia

Other than that though, it's still holding up really well. Still in great condition, with good performance, and great temps.

Edit - I just started using the webcam on it. Damn thing is dark as hell, I have to keep it really bright in here for anyone to see me on it.

I've always thought something like a heat gun or even a hairdryer would work better than the oven - but of course then you have to make sure it gets to a certain temperature in the first place. The reason I think this is that the oven method really gets it hot enough to melt the solder for a long time and that could make it worse. but i dont have any experience with it.

Yeah the webcams are pretty bad - but its USB. I have one from a vaio z thats much better I was thinking of using, just have to do some tiny soldering.
However if you have any laptop webcams laying around with a cable intact you may want to give them a try just by splicing the cables, its pretty likely to work better.

I put it in the oven for about 10 minutes. I wasn't sure what temperature to set the oven at though, as I've seen temperature suggestions on here ranging from 180 to 395. I just hope it lasts long enough for me to get some money together for a new card. A guy in one of the threads here said his card was going nine months strong after the oven trick, and that post was from several months ago, so hopefully my case ends up like that.

I won't even bother with the webcam suggestion, I don't use it often enough for that. Just thought I'd mention the poor quality in an otherwise great laptop(except for the video card of course which is Nvidia's fault). Thanks though.

Be careful on the temps, the 180 is in C and the 390 is in F.

    I think the general area is 190C = 375F

    No way!

It's out of warranty, so I'm just going to save up for a new W880CU, and hope that it doesn't die before I have the $$$.

I'd have to spend ~$600 on a new motherboard + shipping, and I'm not willing to do that.

Mine's running great, with a wine spill no less. Thankfully it only required replacing the keyboard and trackpad. I probably didn't need to replace the trackpad but since I had considered selling it I thought it might be a wise idea. :)

The fan constantly cycles on/off, and the GPU clocks throttle even when gaming. It's like the Silent Mode is screwed up.

This causes the notebook components to sit at high temperatures, even when doing idle tasks, like web browsing.

I'm not really up to doing a motherboard switch myself, so I've pretty much given on on it.
