My notebook ran hot always, so I decided to put some thermal paste under one of the heatsinks with a thermal pad, and now after 2 hour of playing some games, Im amazed I can still put my palm on my notebook without it burning in 2 seconds despite not using a notebook cooler.

My seconds biggest negative is the power cord as every knows its not exactly "portable" with its size.

Its because of your hard drive. no question about it. you should drill some holes in your back cover
You can use other 19.5v 120w adapters such as the Dell 'slim' pa-4e 130w family. I have been using it and it works great. it will need a new plug though so soldering skills are handy to have...

Well, I am up for it :p just putting that out there. I inadvertently took mine completely apart down to the motherboard shortly after getting it.

Maybe you should just try unplugging the silent mode buttons first?

Ill try the adapter, but the heat was not my hard drive. Initially I had a 7200RPM samsung hard drive and heat was hot, but when I put a SSD in, it was still VERY hot. I could barely touch the right palm area which is not where the hard drive is.

As before, I only put some thermal paste under one of the heatsink with a thermal pad (the grey heatsink) and my temperature dropped enough that I can play games on it for hours without it getting hot and without a cooling pad.

Edit: One thing I would like to confirm. Is it possible to have a M860ETU motherboard in a M860TU laptop by replacing it? One reason why I would like to do this is to upgrade my graphic card which cannot be done on the M860TU.

The M860ETU motherboard will fit fine in an M860TU chassis (the chassis' are exactly the same) but the M860TU can accept any gfx card up to the GTX280M - the only difference between the TU and ETU is that the TU does not accept quad core cpu's

It can take the GTX280M? I thought one of the other difference is that the TU cannot accept a GTX280M, but 260M.

Both M860s got the same BIOS updates, thus they will accept the same GPUs.

I see, they have new BIOS updates, last time I checked, M860TU couldnt get it cause of BIOS (pretty long ago).

One other question is why does Eurocom list it as M860TU if it can still accept quad core processors?

The 'E' was never officially there, on Clevo's end. Some resellers added it, to cut down on confusion when the C2Q compatible motherboard came out.

    re: BIOS

the BIOS which allowed the machine to recognize the GTX 260M, in turn added the 280M by default, on the account that they're built on the same G92b GPU core. But no, 280M support was never officially added.

Hmm, I see. I am interested in it as I do have a Quadro FX2700m in it, which is good and probably as expensive as the GTX 280m, but I am definitely not using it for the proper reasons.

Edit: Could someone tell me what are the possible upgrade option are for this?

I do know the 3 below are guaranteed, but any others?

    Hard Drive
Processor (I have TU version and a P9700, so I probably cant upgrade this by much)
RAM (What is the maximum possible?)

Does anyone know if any ATI cards work in the m860tu?

You have a lot of options beyond an fx 2700m. Its not near as powerful or as expensive as the gtx 280m which is very rare.
hp 3700m is very powerful, hp 3600m and 8800gts cards (one is 100 euro in the marketplace) will work with a little bios flashing.
then you have everyday 9800gt 8800 gtx 260m etc.
RAM is what people are currently using in their i7 systems, strangely enough, it supports ddr3 1333mhz. and up to 8gb I believe.
CPU can go much higher with unlocked multipliers. anything with an X or an ES cpu will easily get to 3+ GHz

Any way to tell if you have an etu or a tu? I'd actually be happier if I had a TU because then I'd have an excuse to get an extreme dual core. On that note, are there any good prices on extreme dual cores or ES that have unlocked multipliers anyone knows of?

For what it's worth, my POST says TU and the bottom sticker of the laptop says TU, but I think it came with a 260m, weren't they all ETU?

On what date did you buy it? I'm pretty sure that the GTX 260M became available in early 2009, and every model shipping at that point was an ETU.

My only concern would be that your vendor sent you a leftover TU, because you ordered with a dual core.

Why not get an ES Q9200? I can run it at 3GHZ, using ThrottleStop.

I actually just got it secondhand off ebay. the stickers on the internal parts say may 2009, so I'm thinking it must be ETU. Would the label when it boots up during POST say ETU if it is an ETU?

Between a Q9200 and a dual core X9000/X9100 which one uses more battery during stock speeds and produces more heat? Which one can hit higher clocks? I'm pretty well versed in the benefits of a quad over a dual core in raw computing power, but suffice it to say after all my experience I'm more concerned with clocks, heat and power draw than amount of cores. That said, the Q9200 does look like a solid cheaper way to hit 3GHZ than an X dual.

Can a X9100 be overclocked in the M860, and how much?

    No M86 says ETU, anywhere.

The dates on the internal components are the best indicator. No M860TU, built in May of '09, would be C2Q incompatible.

A Quad will be a larger tax on your battery, but won't overheat any more than the X9100.

I think the X9100 will hit higher clocks. I haven't even tested my Q9200 above 3Ghz.
With ThrotleStop, yes. You could probably hit 3.5Ghz.

To see if your M860TU support Quad Core, it's quite simple :

under or near the RAM modules, there is a label on the motherborad. If it's V3.0A or earlier it will not support quadcore. If it's a V3.0A-1 or V3.0C then it will support quadcore.

I've been having some weird issues lately...

Last night I reassembled an LCD which of course led to me testing it on my m860, as well as a random backlight I have.
So I guess I blew out my inverter... cant get it to work anymore.
This morning I woke up and plugged in a different inverter. I had tried 2 different ones last night which didn't work but this one does. No dimming however. It happens to be 7 pin so I'm using the top 6.

Does anyone know where to get an inverter or what models may work well?

More importantly... I'm stuck in silent mode
I kept hitting the button but still the low RPM fan mode, even when my GPU hit 80c.... :(

Is there any way to bypass or completely disable silent mode? I haven't tried too hard yet but its just worrying.

I've noticed that there are times the problem goes away.

It never did hit me, that waking it up from Sleep was what caused it to function correctly.

dang well i was thinking/hoping it had fixed it permanently. but yeah every time I restart its comes back

So now we have the exact same issue... is that your only symptom of a coffee spill?
Its strange, especially since I probably caused it by using a different inverter or fan.

We need a bios hack... or something... I wonder if the bytes are similar in the m570 bios :/

I figure it caused some sort of electrical issue.

Absolutely. It is staying below 90, right?

50s to 80s is normal. The GTX 260M runs a little bit hotter than the 9800M GT.

I've had both, and it happens.

Then your application of thermal paste was poor.

Recently, both my CPU and GPU were going over 90C. When I removed the heatsink, there were spots on both, where I could see that the paste wasn't spread across the components.

I had also used a tube of some generic Chinese gunk, which came with my Q9200.

I cleaned them, and reapplied with some ICD7. Now they're maxing at 85C when under load.

    Get to work.

New here quick question, My NP8660 or M860TU is still factory (T9600 @ 2.8, 4gb DDR3, and the 9800 gt, getting a SSD for it in the next week and wondering what if anything I need to to in order to upgrade my RAM from 4gb to say 8gb. Is it an updated bios or what would be the negative effects of this? If it is an updated Bios I have no clue where to go to get it.

    Hey all,

I've been googling for a few hours about this, but I'm just curious.

    My M860TU is as follows:
    Sager NP8662
    Intel P8700 @ 2.53
    4GB
    Nvidia GTX260M.

As of now it's still on the Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit that was an upgrade from Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

    I want to reformat.

Are there any special driver needs for my laptop? If so, where can I find the required drivers?

Under BIOS perior to 1.00.07, Windows system loses 512MB system memory when the VGA is nVIDIA 9800M GTS or 9800M GTX and the total system memory is 4GB.

Last time I checked (a while ago), the m860tu cannot be (cpu) overclocked, is it still no possible to do so? I did see a sig from another person with a m860tu that did indicate it was overclocked.

Edit: Also can the M860TU take a GTX280m with MXM 3 or can it only be 2.1

    Q9200, all day every day.

Even if you use games/programs, which would benefit from 3Ghz, you can easily hit 3Ghz on all 4 cores with the Throttlestop program.

Core 2 Duo is dead. Don't even consider it.

Check out ThrottleStop. Works mainly with quad cores or Intel Extreme CPU's dual-core.
