i have installed a second mini-pcie wireless card where the 3g modem is supposed to be. how do i turn it on? is there a secret hardware switch to turn on 3g? like fn+f11 for wireless
-
Fn+"_-" key, if you understand. The one to the right of the "0" - atleast thats the layout on the keyboard in the manual.
-
Laptop mini-pcie slots can have one of 2 interfaces - pci-e or USB - the 3G card slot is wired up as USB, so unless your wireless card is USB, it won't work or be detected. Why do you want 2 wireless cards anyway?
-
the card is detected and it works, it just says that the radio is off, and i can't find a way to turn it on. i tried some lenovo software "access connections". it has a button to turn wireless on/off via software but didn't work in my case.

All the "secret" hotkey functions :

Wow, I knew all of them, with the exception of Fn + ~; that will come in handy.

It works really well for me. You just have to downclock some things slightly to compensate.
You can usually flash your RAM to 800mhz and that will do the trick to get 1333mhz FSB. You should use the 6th position on the slider.
There are other positions for 1333mhz as well, I think they vary in stability. There is also one for 1120, 1077, and a way to get 1150. Here is the thread:

Assuming that is yours in your sig.

Good day, gentlemen
I have a RAM issue.
Which is, I have 2x2GB Corsair. And I have a huge amount of BSoD with it.
So I've decided that one of mem is trying to blow my m860tu.
What I've did:
1. Plugged off all rams, put 1 ram in first slot. One week of tests. Zero BSoD;
2. Plugged off first ram, and plugged in the second one, and again in the first RAM slot. >24 hours of tests = zero BSoDs.
3. Both RAMs in - BSoD.
4. Switching RAMs in slots - BSoD.
I'm wonder if there is some problem with second RAM slot (will test it next week) or problem with "synchro" two different rams which were working almost fine almost 18 months (BSOD was like once every 6 moth before).
What is your guess? Or probably I'm wrong here and need to check something else?
Many thanks in advance. -
-
try running memtest86+ Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
-
pkhetan
both are 7-7-7-20, by default.
Minefield
I've tried that too, in all ways. Also standard and extended mode for W7 (in boot options) for some hours. Nothing in both tools. No errors. -
a bsod doesn't always mean faulty hardware, try reinstalling windows. could be a problem with drivers, ssd corrupted, viruses etc. etc. what does the bsod say?
-
I've checked all BSoD codes, everything pointing to RAM, plus when RAM only in one slot, and not both RAMs are inside then no BSOD at all. So its definitely RAM/SLOT/SYNCHRO issue.

Does anyone know what tip the 8660 uses? I'm trying to buy a new Li Shin AC adapter off eBay and there's a bunch of tip sizes.
Here's the link: li shin 0227a20120 items - Get great deals on Computers Networking items on eBay.com!
I read somewhere that it has a center pin of 2.5mm. -
Yep, 2.5/5.5. 0227A20120 is ok.
-
on my mainboar near the ram i can read v3.1A. Does my notebook supports quads?
-
no..........
-
hey folks, dunno if I've asked this before, but if I am upgrading my RAM, do I have to do anything/make sure anything is updated (i.e. BIOS, OS, etc.), or can I just pop in, let's say, 4Gb of RAM and be happy with my life?
-
Just do it and be happy
-
-
-
Nope. 32bit = 3GB, 64bit = 4GB+

Hi. quick question. Is it just me, or does the charger cable unplug EXTREMELY easily from this laptop? I can't put this on my lap or move it 1 inch before the cable unplugs itself. It pops out about 2 cm when I move it and it stops charging. It doesn't 'click' in like other chargers; there's no resistance when I pull it out of the charging socket. And recently, even when its fully plugged in, it doesn't charge or it randomly stops charging every couple of hours.
-
-
Mine also come unplugged extremely easily, but that's really nothing new with the M860TU.
The not charging is not normal though. Sounds like your PSU might be going bad. -
hey guys,
I was wondering how important it is to upgrade my BIOS. I'm not confident enough yet to upgrade it myself, but it is the original BIOS that came with my unit 2+ years ago. Am I missing out on anything here by not upgrading? I haven't had any problems with it or anything, but I do know it's outdated and something about that tweaks my computer OCD lol!
Thanks! -
There's no reason to upgrade your BIOS unless the update addresses an issue you're having with your machine. It's not like the M860TU BIOS updates have ever added any features. I haven't even thought about a BIOS update, in close to two years.
For you, you don't need to update, unless you buy a GTX 260M or 280M. -
-
Look for the changelog for each biosupdates. If you find anything that makes updating worhtwhile, then update.
-
-
I don`t think Clevo/Sager makes BIOS` anymore for M860. I have 0.17 on my M860 and running W7. Haven`t tried W7 with any other BIOS though. It isn´t difficult to update, so if you´re planning on going W7, you should probably update. Just remember to do it correctly.
-
Sweet deal. I have a few days off right now, so I think I'm going to try it out. Doing my research on how to do this properly and get the right files right now, so maybe I'll try my luck in a few days when I feel sure about myself haha! don't want to risk bricking my laptop!
-
Haha, I know exactly how you feel. Have been in the same boat. Don´t freak out when it beeps during the update. I recommend to plug in a headphone or something, because its annoying load

Hi, I didn't know where to post this question, so I guessed it should be here.
I have an almost unused 9800m GT(has been in use for only 2 months!), how much do you think it is worth? how much would I get on ebay?
I was just wondering, because I read a lot that the 9800m GT is better than the 9800m GS/GTS/GTX.
thanks for your help. -
Hi.
First off, with 9800M, it goes GTX > GT > GTS > GS
I think you should list it at $200 to $300. -
It is better than the GS/GTS, but not as powerful as the GTX
edit: Darn, beaten to it...
You really think it's still worth that much? -
Not to me, but I wasn't in the mood to low ball his product.
There's people with dead G92M who will pay anything. I'd expect it to go quickly at $200. -
thanks for the quick replies.
i flashed the vBios from 500/799/1250(gpu/memory/shader) to 625/990/1562. it ran 100% stable with max temps of 85°C. should I flash it back to default clocks?
or is it worth more when it's overclocked? -
niffcreature ex computer dyke
You could advertise it as overclocked and probably get 400$ eventually.
I got 300$ + shipping for mine in under a week. Just have to advertise it as alienware and area-51.
If you do that tho, don't sell as overclocked -
My m860tu revealed it's first sign of aging today: the original HDD died this morning, R.I.P! Well, at least I'm pretty sure it's the HDD. Loud "whirring" noise accompanied by the disk spinning out of control (until powered off), and now BSOD on startup is a sure sign it's the HDD, right?

Can someone let me know how my temps are looking? This is after a couple hours of playing BFBC2, starting from idle temps.
http://i.imgur.com/mRF72.jpg
Thanks! -
BFBC2 is definitely no slouch in the CPU department so I'd say its a fairly good indication of your max "real world" temps as opposed to Prime 95 or similar which is often 5-10 degrees hotter than anything you would realistically see. -
Thanks for the reply TooBAMF, good first post!
Another question: seems my fan has been acting up lately too. It's been sounding pretty rough lately, almost like grinding noises, which are never pleasant to hear. I've opened my laptop up and cleaned it out (not much dust at all really), but want to know:
1) Can I run my laptop with the back plate off for a while to pinpoint exactly where the grinding is coming from/what it causing it?
2) Can I apply a lubricant to the fan, like a little WD-40 or something, to ease the grinding?
Thanks! -
The grinding fan is not uncommon with this machine. Myself and a few other have had this happen.
Fan replacement is your only option. -
I can easily put myself into your shoes as my laptop started doing that a month ago. In my case it was the CPU side fan going crazy. For some reason the problem goes away whenever I turn the laptop off for a while.
It can suddenly start doing it for no reason if the laptop is turned on and stop doing it after a while.
The company I got my laptop from has some unfortunate communication problem whenever I ask about a replacement fan so I was wondering if there are any sites that actually sell fans for this laptop or do I just have to try to keep contacting that company?
I tried googling for some stores but they never carried the fan for this model so I guess it has work for some other laptop models too?
Any tips are really appreciated at this point and my apologies for the convulated post. -
niffcreature ex computer dyke
i think if you loosen the screws on the shroud it may help. the ones on the actual metal part of the fan, not the mounting.
The dell XPS m1530 technically uses the same fan as the m860tu but the shroud and mounts are different. you could potentially swap the internals of the 2 fans which would fix the problem if it really is the bearings. -
Oh dear oh dear -
My M860Tu is missing a lot of keys presses lately, it's driving me nuts.
Even worse, is that there's a green line appearing down the middle of my LCD, depending on the angle of the screen. This just started yesterday.
I really have beaten the old bird to death, and it's past time for an upgrade. Damn you, Intel.
At this point, I'm just hoping the poor thing can survive until April or May. I have my doubts. -
