So i just got e-mail from XOTICPC and sadly my np5125 is on backorder until september 24th . I thought i would get mines before they ran out but guess i was late. To make make matters worse asus just announced the n53jf ( Hands-On With Asus N53J, a 15-inch Multimedia Notebook for $999. I really wanted the n53 but XOTIC had the n53jq which had the core i-7 without optimus and not 1080 screen and it was a bit steep at $1200 and i really didn't need all that horsepower. So this newly announced model is exactly what im looking for just remains to be seen if there is an option to uograde the screen. I think i could order spare lcd from the n53jn and i would work on the n53jf. Plus its got the new nvidia gt425m

I bet i will get the sager no earlier than october 10th. what do you guys think? i think it would be worth it for me. i mean yea the sager had the great screen but they are almost in the same price range. my total was $925 WITH a spare battery.

    +1

    +1

Shipped yesterday; great customer service from sager.

I bought this laptop mostly because of the high res screen. I was considering getting a low res screen because my vision is quite bad and I can't stand small text, but after seeing a 1366x768 laptop I knew I couldn't step down from 1680x1050 which I've used for the past four years. It's actually easier on the eyes to have high res and increase dpi.

Why does the i5-450M seem to be preferred over the i5-540M for most folks who are buying the Sager NP5125? Is there some performance problem on the i5-540M?

It is not that the i5-450M is preferred over the i5-540M.. The i5-450M although is preferred over the i5-520M though.. Because strangely the 450M is better then the 520 when 3dmark testing scores... As for the i5-540M.. its ghz is a lot higher then the i5-450M and is better then the 450M.. I think you might be mistaking the 540M with the 520M where that is correct, the 450M is strangely better then the 520M at a cheaper cost too.

PS. It is picked more then the i5 540M simply because it is cheaper.. by about $90.. in compairing the 520m and the 450m though, the 450m comes out on top even with a little bit lower ghz
I mean some people would rather get a cheaper processor and put the money elsewhere into like the Hybrid drive or something.. its simply you save money by going with the 450m and it really is not much of a downgrade from the 540m.

Wow, that is a pretty sweet looking laptop. And seems to most definitely have better speakers.

Still up in the air is whether the screen will be customizable to full 1080 HD, whether it will look as good even if it does, and whether that single-button mouse can actually right click :p

Also, I don't think the new GPU is a heck of a lot better than the old 330. Perhaps if it was a 430 (which might not exist), but it looks like the 425 is only a bit faster.

I do like how it actually has light-up indicators for capslock and numlock though, and I bet it has a better webcam. Very interesting. I'll be happy with my Sager though :)

No problem.. and thanks, this is the exact reason I made this poll.. To try and help future buyers know what people were buying so they could decide what they wanted to buy.. I would have saved a LOT of time if someone made a poll like this when I was trying to figure out what I wanted.. I actually changed my mind and order about 3 times since i first posted it, upgrading my processor and other things after realizing what people said about everything so I'm glad my hard work of creating this poll is beneficial to at least one person [:

woohoo, typing this from my newest gorgeous np5125.

arrived at israel without harm, i also did get two 62 Whr batteries, sweet :)
the computer looks amazing, feels great, i like the keyboard alot, don't really see what there is to complain about, perfect.

it does look a bit dull when closed but when open it looks great, really cool, the screen is amazing!! it's runs very fast and cool.

now dead or stuck pixels :) no noisy fan, can't hear it at all, i only hear the ODD when it works.

my first laptop ever and i'm thrilled.

the speakers are a bit numb but for regular comp usage it's really fine. didn't get the chance to upload somr music and hear.

installed windows 7 ultimate 64, downloading update nvidia drivers as we speak, tommorow i'll install ubuntu and see how it goes.

there is only one thing bothering me, the lower edge where the wrists rest is very sharp and in some positions it's not too compfy... a bit anoying if you're lying down in bed or ona couch leaning your hands on the computer.

btw, i'll say it again, the keyboard is great, i really like it, didn;t miss one key, only the noted before space bar thingy. i don't fell any flex. only if i push too hard, but thats seems dangerous either way.

thats about it for now, i'm dea tierd, ciao.

    Update:

It seems like the OLD nVidia drivers from the driver disc that Sager provides makes the fan come on LESS. So, this is a good thing. Also of note, the old drivers fix the weird youtube video issue.

shteren - The keyboard could be better. It clicks and clacks when you're typing and it could be perceived as "loud" when you're sitting in a quiet environment.

Hmm really? Nothing flicks on or off for me when I hit caps lock or num lock. Those lights seem to be the plugged-in light, the umm.. burst overclocking light? the bluetooth light, and the hard drive light. Don't see any caps/num lock, unless I'm super blind.

From mcfaddenator a couple pages back ago:
i5-450 has higher DMI bandwidth (4.8 GT/s instead of 2.5 GT/s found in 520 and 540), thus allowing higher transfer speed from CPU to dGPU, resulting a slight improvement in 3D benchmark.

Ah oops, my mistake. That place is generally covered by my wrist so I don't see it most of the time. Not the most strategic location, but I guess it is there.

JSYK, you can't usually swap laptop screens that are different resolutions. The same cable supplies power and DVI, so different screens use different inverters.

Nope, I didn't. I ordered the 42Wh battery and it came with one 62.16Wh battery. washogren's came with two 62.16Wh batteries because he ordered a second battery during the half-off deal.

Yeah.. but think about it.. how important really is it to constantly see the light.. normally you check if it is on for num lock once and if it is then you ignore it for the remainder of the time on the computer really.. who uses scroll lock and caps lock.. well if you are typing in all caps then buddy.. its on. So I find it not bad at all maybe even better that it is just hidden but not HIDDEN. Oh well.

There was no confirmation that the i5-450 has a higher 3D Benchmark then the i5-540.. I know it was confirmed with the i5-520 but as for the i5-540, there is a significant increase in the ghz and it has a turbo of over 3ghz so from what I heard is the i5-540 is better overall.. even if it maybe scores the same as the i5-450 3D Benchmark.. as i recall it scored a tad bit higher but then again I dont remember exactly.

Actually, the i5-450m does better than both the 540m and 520m in Passmark's system benchmark (which evaluates CPU and GPU separately). So we have a logical reason, and evidence.

Playing Solitaire with nothing else on in the background, I noticed the fan was spinning away like it always does. This prompted me to take a series of photos!

I got my IR thermometer out and measured the screen temperature. This is with the brightness all the way down:

Then I measured the vent on the left side:

Got a bit more curious and took off the bottom panel:

I believe this is the south bridge chipset:

    GPU? I don't really know:

CPU. This I know for sure!

How can a processor with that much higher of a ghz speed (i5-540)not have any benefit over a processor with such a lower speed (i5-450).. there has to be SOME benefit of the i5-540 over the i5-450. you can not tell me that there is not even ONE place where it is better. Like does the test take the 3ghz of turbo into affect and everything? because i just don't see how it is physically possible for it to be so much worse with so much more of a turbo boost..

Someone please help with this because I have time to switch from the i5-540m to the i5-450m and save about $100 or so.. I just need to hear it from multiple people or hear that there is literally NO BENEFIT WHATSOEVER over the i5-540m over the i5-450m..

    Thanks

It has a higher frequency, so in some areas that are dependent on frequency and not transfer between parts, the i5-540m will win. In most applications, they're about neck and neck.

mcfaddenator got 6.5k 3DMark006 on his system w/o overclock and latest driver
Charles' review also used 450m, which got him 6.6k on 3DMark06.

Mine is 6066, Sumik's is somewhere along 6100 something. What is yours?

Mine has not arrived yet, bringing me to the predicament.. save $100 to put towards maybe a SSD in a year or so.. or maybe towards an upgrade in processor? or keep the 540m apposed to the 450m.. It seems to me that the 540m is not even worth it unless you are running multiple OS's through windows or whatever which I would never have to do or encoding which i'm not going to..? so in your opinions.. should i downgrade and save $100 even though its not really downgrading because it does better on 3dmark then the 540m.. please some advice so i can send an email to xoticPC depending if i should downgrade and save $100 or not..

Okay, these are my options.. (I will be using web design programs ex. Photoshop, Dreamweaver, with a little gaming on the side.. Dota and CSS.. nothing very very intense gaming at all.. mainly older games.. considering CSS to be old :p)

    1) Keep the i5-540m (supposedly get no noticeable upgraded performance compared to the i5-450m & lose out on $115)

    2) Get the i5-450m, upgrade to 6GB or 8GB of ram -> is it worth it to just do 6GB or may as well just get 8GB? I will be using dreamweaver, photoshop a lot (I'm a Web Designer) in addition to gaming and love to alt tab a lot (i think thats when memory comes into affect a lot) and will it noticeably speed up the system from 4GB to 8GB? or at least multi-tasking? because I do this a lot.

    3) Get the i5-450m, save $115 and upgrade to SSD (eventually -> year or so)

Please any ideas would be greatly appreciated.. ASAP would be best.. Thanks [:
PS. I'm voting on option number 2 seeing as in a year when prices drop on SSD I should have money by then to spend on a SSD... holding $100 for a year with no improvements on my laptop seems pointless to me (ONLY SAYING IF an increase from 4GB of ram to 6GB or 8GB is worth it.. if it is not noticeable or worth it then please tell me so because on my beastly PC I just have 4GB of ram so input pleaseee [ :)

It's up to you, but the SSD will give you the best performance boost (especially in Photoshop and Premiere). Keep in mind that cheaper SSDs have very different performance compared to expensive ones. The more expensive, the faster.

Well im mainly asking from a stand point of well I am not going to fork out the money on a SSD right now because they are just too expensive and I need a lot of space.

I'm asking someone who is used to 4GB of memory and has upgraded to 6GB or 8GB that multitasks a lot... is it a noticeable boost? because I am leaning towards upgrading the ram and taking away from the processor (in result not really taking away from the processor) I just need to know if ram is the way to go or would it just be a waste to get 6GB or 8GB of ram seeing as I multi-task a lot and use CS5 programs.

I use CS5 as well (PS, Flash, Premiere, and Deamweaver) but I've never used more than 4GB RAM in one of those environments. Unless it's the 64-bit version of Photoshop, the program can't access more than 4GB of the RAM anyays.

On a side note, just hit 7000 in 3DMark06 (OCed of course, stock cooling as always). Hot air just spewing out of the system,though...maybe I'll put some better thermal paste in.

I definitely agree with you about Donald. He's so helpful! Perhaps I've waited longer enough since Dark has canceled my order one month ago.

Btw, lappy comes with following spec:
    i5 520m | 4GB | FHD | 500GB HDD | N6300 | DVD
    PowerNotebook

So I know for sure I am going to downgrade to the 450m then.. with the results you are getting and you run on CS5 just fine with 4gb of memory.. So just save the $115 and put that towards a SSD when time comes then? You feel that this is the best thing to do because from your results I feel as if it is probably the best thing for me to do also.

Does anyone know of a good Windows utility to overclock a Core i5...say, the one in my Sager? :p

Oh godd I would be flipping with excitement if I were you then :p But yeah, already using the similar but larger NP7110 model, I have grown quite accustom to the Sager brand and build quality. I love the keyboard though others have some complaints and as for the internal parts.. Those can all be changed at any point in time so no use in complaining over them (besides the graphics card, but that is what makes this machine.. this machine... It's LIGHT! THIN! and can also be used for gaming.. that is what makes this laptop so special and different).

Best of luck to you (hopefully no problems with it) and TELL ME HOW YOU LIKE IT ASAP! :D

Don't the mobile core i series supposedly doesn't support overclock? For it has inherent system with auto-throttling depending on your CPU usage?

Regarding the i5-540M vs. the i5-450M it would seem that the only possible advantage would the that the i5-540M supports hardware virtualization [VT-x = Intel Virtualization Technology ] where the i5-450M does not. Where would the VT-x support be an issue? Used to be for running Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode, but I understand that hardware virtualization is no longer required for these functions. Is there a significant performance improvement for VM's (which I will be using) when using VT-x?

I need install just one of these? (My wireless is 802.11)

And about IMSM, what is this? What is the bennefit?

    Warm regards.

IMEI typically refers to the unique numbering scheme used to identify cellular devices. This must mean something different in your case.

IMSM is Intel Matrix Storage Manager now called Intel Rapid Storage Technology. It provides support for advanced hard drive features like raid and ncq. Your system will probably work without it, but these features may not be available.

I have a logistics question on these laptops. I'm thinking of ordering one, but I only have a week before I'm leaving town. Is it possible to get one delivered in a week or should I wait until I get back?
