The UPS truck probably got flooded and is stuck in some street flood. It's been storming all week here in California.

I figured that :D . Well, the reason I asked is because the keyboard seems weird to game on. I am just now starting to get used to it. Has anybody else felt the same way?

The keyboard is a godsend. It's very rigid and the feedback from the keys are stiff, just how I like them.

I like that aspect also. It is great for typing. But, for some reason the layout in the WASD and spacebar, etc. gave me trouble to get used to at first.

It's great to hear many positive posts on the NP8760 / W870CU. I'm very happy with mine now for over 2 months. The LED, noise level, keyboard, the overall design, and of course performance imo is very good! Watching a blu-ray movie on it...WOW!! :)

This system is GREAT!! I have not encountered any problems after a little over a week. Display is beautiful, and so is the performance. I can play BF2 for 2-3 hours and HWMonitor reports extremely impressive temperatures (52-55 deg. C). I have been idling in the low 40's!!!

The keyboard layout did get to me during the first week of use. The layout of all the keys is the same as my previous notebook, but the arrow keys on the W870CU were moved up one row. I frequently kept mispressing the right ctrl key instead of the left arrow key when I hit the right alt + left arrow key bind to rewind videos in MPC (I do a bit of freelance translating and timing for fansub groups) because the keys are right next to each other on the same row now. But for general typing, it's a pleasure. In FPS games, it's extremely crisp. The tactility in the keys gives you assurance that you know that you depressed the keys and that your idle fingers aren't going to sink into keys that you don't want to press. Lastly, the keyboard is easier to clean since all the keys are separated by the skeletal frame. I don't even need to take my keyboard out anymore; all I do now is power up my compressor and blast each individual key squeaky clean.

Oh, yea that's right I forgot. I watch alot of CNN and they showed some streets with like 3 feet of water! O well I was kinda hoping it would have made it on a plane before then, but then again its supposed to drop down to freezing here and start snowing by Monday(when It's supposed to arrive.)Oh well, I'll be happy when It's in my hands and I'm installing my SSD and checkin for dead pixels! I'm supposed to go to my sisters house in Cincinnati next week... I might have to postpone it a day or two!!!

Apologies in advance if this has been asked before, but is it possible to order these specific fans from anywhere? I'd rather not send the laptop in for repair.

You can order the fans from any Clevo reseller. You will not find them anywhere else as they are clevo parts (and that is a Clevo part number).

Wait just a minute... It looks like your 3 hot keys lights at the top middle are not on! Is this true, or just washed out from the camera flash?
    .
This is a bit of an issue for me watching the screen at night and my lights are on very bright and have found no way to disable them.

Thanks for any help on this.

Are there any other fans that would offer comparable performance, be quieter and fit into W870CU? I doubt that any replacement Clevo fan would be as quiet as for example fan in my Elitebook 8530w.

My idle temperatures are also between 47-48'C (GPU and CPU, with usually one core higher 2-3'C). I think it's normal temperature for the no name paste they use.

Sweet, it seems like they are good temps? I've never had my cores get higher than 70 C under very intensive encoding+other crap going on in the background. I played Aion at max settings, even x4 AA and temps were 67 after 3 hours. I am very impressed! The laptop stays pretty luke warm after playing a lot.

One thing that gets f-ing hot is the power brick, but that doesn't really matter. Just surprised me a little. I guess thats why they put the sticker on there that says "Caution, gets hot" lol

Cut out a strip of plastic filtering and put it over your LED bar at night.

    No.

The GPU is on the warm side. The CPU is looks normal within the fan thresholds

The PSU keeps my feet warm at night.

Actually not so nice, but that is what I did when I bought it and what I am still doing. There is an old saying: "Great minds think alike...", but its the second half of that which has me concerened :)

I will end up modifying the current to them eventually, but I thought someone found a way either through a different BIOS or who knows what - apparently not.

Thank you anyways. Please note that no one else is bothered by this - it's just my own pet peve. It is an AWESOME laptop.

So is this louder than its predecessor? Having had a chance to use a 570 (put one together for my daughter), it wasn't nearly as loud as reported. Quiet? No, but on a scale of 1 to the M17/Whitebook 840, it was a 5, 6 maybe.

I'm moving back to 17"+ real estate, and with the price drop on these (RJ has the barebones for $1149!), I'm seriously contemplating one.

I totally agree! I'm sure that those that got loud fans in their machines it is a rare occurrence. I've had 2 NP8760's both were nice and quiet.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-mySN-XMG7-c-Notebook.22205.0.html showed 39dB for idle state which is value other non gamming laptops get at load. For W860CU they measured even more - 41dB. Qosmio-X500 produces 34dB in idle. Asus G-72 produces 37dB in idle. So Clevo laptops are noisier than other brands, but it is also possible that W870Cu and W860CU are quieter than previous models.

Woot! just got my new machine!!! I will definitely say it is one of the fastest machines I've used to date hands down, I would even say it seems snappier than my i7 920 desktop which I can probably attribute largely to the SSD.

I downloaded the free version of Everest and found out I have the AUO display with zero dead pixels that I could find :D. I kept peering over the display with a microfiber and a website that displays different configurations for testing dead pixels. I would see a spot tense up, wipe then exhale lol.

    Blu-ray looks amazing too.

Haven't installed any games on it yet I'm still copying a bunch of crap off my external onto it...

Congrats! It's a fine machine. Hopefully when Sager mails me my replacement it won't have any stuck or dead pixels like my last one.

I'll have to re-read this thread to get all of the tips and hints to setting it up properly. :)

Yes definitely beautiful and you're right Hemi, it is a keeper! It's pretty much exactly what I expected. The speakers ARE a bit tinny, and the fans sound like they're emo, but hell look what you're gettin. Besides what laptop has "excellent" speakers and who buys a lappy just for that? I do have one eency little tiff, the touch button hot key bar along the top was slightly scruffed up a bit. At first I thought that it had a bit of plastic on it like the rest of the surfaces but I pried with a toothpick ('cause I'm anal) and couldn't get anything to come up. But on a positive note, the battery lasted slightly longer than expected probably a little more than an hour playin' mp3s runnin scan software and trying to drain it. I installed NFS Shift and it runs like butter roughly 30 fps fully maxed at 1920x1080. The only game I saw had any issues was Sims 3 with my 4 story mansion i concocted. But to be honest it gives my desktop a run for it's money... there's alot there to draw out. Dragon Age runs like butter on max 1920x1080 also. Been debating on installing WoW and D&D on it too. I will in time i'm sure.

Oh, and I DEFINITELY could'nt have made my decision without these forums. They helped me make my final decision... Thanks all.

I haven't noticed a whine at all. Its possible that they do because I do most of my gaming at a local LAN center and they play music and I wear headphones.

The fans do get a bit loud when the gpu is used for gamming. However, my old desktop had 7 fans so it sounded a bit quieter then what I was used to :D

When I get my system back I'll have to see if getting the IC diamond paste makes a difference. I needed an excuse to head over to Lowes and pick up a temp gun :p

Grats Karass, you won't be disappointed!

To RAID 0 or not to.. that is the question. I got 2x320s and I really have no use for the other 320. I have a 1TB eSATA drive for storage if I need... what do you guys think? Is the RAID 0 worth the risk ? Especially in a laptop?

Well since you have external 1tb so you can do backups so I would say 0 should be ok. As long as you do regular backups you'll be fine. I've used Vista and 7's backup and it is surprisingly well compared to its earlier brethren.

I missed the UPS man this morning so I have to wait till 7:30pm tonight to go pick my laptop up. Has anybody installed the newest video card driver 195.62 on there NP8760? Does it improve anything over the previouse driver?

I think the newest drivers still knock out the Blu-Ray? I haven't updated the video due to this fact. Any word on a fix for that? Speaking of drivers, I updated the webcam drivers, or at least I thought I did. Any talks of fixing the webcam? I don't expect perfection but this cam beyond sucks.

Yes, the latest drivers kill Bluray playback -- never found a fix or later than the sager official drivers that work with Bluray. I wish the forums over at laptopvideo2go were better organized. If anybody found a solution there I'd love to hear it!!!

Just got a message back from Sager concerning my np8760 shutting down when maxing out the cpu/gpu. They say when doing this it consumes more than 180 watts, where as the ac adapter is rated for 120 watts. Their suggestion is to not max both the cpu and gpu at the same time.

I've never had a system that would shut down like this when maxing both, and the worry is that future games will use more of both the gpu and cpu, and after extended periods of play, will cause the system to just randomly shut down because it uses too much power. I ran the same tests on the np8690 when I had it and never had it shut down on me. I'm curious if this is the case with everyone else and would like to see if anyone else with this model has the same issue with it shutting down after maxing out the cpu/gpu.

What I would do would be to start Prime 95 (Maximum heat), then start Furmark (Stability test, Xtreme Burning Mode, 800x600, No AA). After five to ten minutes it would shut down as the fan speed increased. Though if the battery is charging while running these tests, it'll shut down quicker. As well if after a minute or two you put in a cd or dvd in the drive and have that try to spin up, it'll shut down quicker.

If you're concerned about the notebook shutting down on you because of the PSU, you can pick up this 160W PSU. It is made by the same manufacturer as your 120W PSU, Li Shin. The DC plug is the exactly the same, except straight instead of a right angle. I guess this is good too as the straight angle plug won't block the HDMI or USB port. I've bought a few PSU's from PCHub before so they're a legit company. I bought a few 120W Li Shin's to splice a few 90W EPS's for a few notebook terminals in a lab for a client. Li Shin makes big PSU's, but if you open them up, you'll see why; there are huge aluminium heatsinks in there. PCHub is a bit slow on shipping though, mainly because they're overseas, so don't expect quick shipping. http://www.pchub.com/uph/laptop/46-41999-6603/Li-Shin-0226A20160-AC-Power-Adapter.html

Most PSU manufacturers produce PSU's with a little bit of "leeway," also known as the true rating. For example, the 120W Li Shin's that power our Clevo's have a true maximum output of ~150W. For the 160W PSU I linked above, it will probably be ~190-200W. Even though PSU's are one of the most durable components on a notebook, it's not good to push it to it's limit all the time, especially without heatsinking. With my 120W PSU, I have a big aluminium hard drive heatsink sitting ontop of it when I'm at home to help cool it down. It doesn't need it, but I do it just because I can.

Keep in mind that the 160W PSU above is noticeably larger and heavier than in the 120W PSU. It's size and weight is closer to, though not quite, the 220W Li Shin that powers the D900F and M980NU. So the 160W PSU would be better suited to keep at home as it's not something you would enjoy carrying around with you, and you can use your original 120W while you're on the go. I'm pretty sure you're not going to be running WCS PSU tests while you're in class or at work.

so its a confirmed fact that the 8760 will use more power than the standard psu supplies when maxed out?
will this also apply to the 8690?

I'm going to hook mine up to a Kill-A-Watt when I get it back to see how much power it uses during gaming and regular use as well maxed out. I ran the same tests on a 8690, that I did on 8760 but it must have been using less power, or the PSU was more tolerant. Though if it was close, like Soviet Sunrise stated, then I wouldn't want to be running the PSU close to its limit.

If an equally built W860CU and a W870CU are benched for power, the W870CU would consume more power mainly because of the larger screen. Both the W860CU and the W870CU, and the M860TU and the entire M570 lineage, use the same 120W Li Shin PSU.

PSU manufacturing quality is a lot tighter compared to other computer components like CPU's and GPU's. It's not that you have a low quality PSU, rather it is the unknown factors that are present on the W860CU that you tested. If an accurate measurement is to be made, both machines need to, ideally, have equal "base" hardware and a fresh OS. But you can also make the measurement using similar builds, (ie. 2GB vs 4GB, 720QM vs 820QM, etc.)

It's okay to thrash your PSU for long periods of time like in games or encoding, but not with P95/Furmark.
