I took out the SSD from the 8760 during the tests so that both had the same internal components as far as I could choose when ordering. Only differences would be the screen/speakers or other model differences.

That's why I was surprised when the 8760 shut down and the 8690 did not show this issue. I'm guessing that little bit of extra power for the screen, or the PSU was better made. After testing the 8760 with the spare 120 watt PSU and having the same issue, I figured it was something else. I did notice that the PSU gets hotter with the 8760 than it did with the 8690. Though that's something that is subjective.

That's good enough. If you received the same result from the details you just gave, then the W870CU does indeed use more power aside from just the CPU and GPU.

I am interested in the NP8760... I currently own an NP8660. There are a few issues I have with my current sager laptop that I'm hoping aren't existent with the NP8760... If I use headphones (with the 3.5mm port, not USB), the max volume level is very poor. Also the keyboard has really bad flex, worse than that it actually disconnects from the corner and I have to push it back into place. I'm hoping the keyboard is much better on these considering they look built-in with the chick-let style keys. And I really dislike the smooth slightly glossy touch pad that shows fingerprints and makes your finger stick to it cause it's too smooth. And along with this I dislike the mouse buttons that take a good amount of effort to click. And when it clicks, it makes an audible "click" sound that lets the entire class room know i'm clicking it. I would think clevo could design a higher quality case than dell, but sad to say my XPS M1330 exterior features IMO are far better. :) Can someone please tell me that clevo fixed these annoyances? Also does the NP8760 have a silent button that downclocks everything and keeps noise to it's lowest?

Does anyone have a good answer for the modem port? it's almost embarrassing! it's 2010. not 1995.

    Thanks for any responses!

    Hey guys,

I found a solution for the stupid bluray playback problem with latest NVIDIA drivers in connection with the W870CU! Monitor dimming also works fine. Just download my modded 195.81 beta driver for Windows 7 x64! (Sorry, other drivers aren’t available by now but I hope that most people with a new computer changed to a x64 based operating system)

Please let me know if it works on your machine. No guarantee. I have the UJ-130AS BD-Rom drive, apply PowerDVD9 and the laptop is from mysn.

Link: http://rapidshare.com/files/343097497/w870cu_nv195.81_x64.exe.html (7z SFX-archive, sorry only 10 downloads, please post it in forum!)

I am curious does the shutdown occur on the battery, with the PSU unplugged?

When I tried running it on battery alone, it wouldn't let it max out and would only run at a slower setting that used less power. Not sure if there was some setting I could have changed to allow it to run maxed out.

The reason I asked this question is I am surprised the Battery does not kick in quick enough to keep the laptop from shutting down.

By the way SS I do not need to be schooled in battery capacity and power supply theory, I am an electrical engineer with experience in the design of battery chargers and power supplies.

The interest I have in this has to do with an issue I had at work. I designed the switching circuitry that senses when a system is plugged into an AC line and when not connected, switches to battery power. I used discrete parts to do this as the specialized circuits that are available to do this had one problem or another that could not be overcome. One problem that I could not solve before having to move on was when the power supply adapter was unplugged at the power plug right on the device I could switch fast enough to battery power; keeping the device running with no data loss (The device has a micro in it). The problem I had was when the AC mains were removed from the power adapter on the line side the unit would reset thus forcing a reboot. This is on a device that is two years old, but I am revisiting the design to solve some component obsolesce issues and production test problems.

I looked at the switching problem again and it was surprisingly just a simple resistor change to fix. Funny how looking at something with fresh eyes allowed me to easily see the fix.

    Sorry for the long rant.

By the way I have interest in the 8760 and the 8690; both laptops seem to have their quirks as well as their own pros and cons.

I don't doubt your credentials one bit, but my reply was catered for gedekran's post. I see the issue you have with your setup. The transfer switch in most modern notebooks kicks in once the primary source of power fails, on the DC end of the PSU. As you described, if the PSU is cut off directly from AC, the device will reset as the transfer switch cannot detect the drop in current being outputted from the AC-DC inverter on the PSU. To me, it sounds like an older standby-ferro setup. Our Clevo's don't have this issue as the switch on the motherboard is setup as a direct standby circuit, which will kick the transfer switch open upon detection of current drop, so you don't have to worry about the system resetting. What you can do is as you suggested: replace the existing resistor with a lower ohm one to make the transfer switch more sensitive to current change. This may put a little more wear on the battery as voltage irregularities from dirty wall current will toggle the switch more frequently, but it should be able to kick in fast enough and prevent your systems from resetting from that split second drop.

In gedekran's case, the ACPI is dictating the current output from the battery by limiting the critical components; CPU limited to 1.46GHz and the GPU limited to 2D desktop speeds. His W870CU still died faster because of the other components that suck on the battery more compared to the W860CU components.

Cool. So what did you have to change to get it to work? Was it a simple value change?

Just thought I'd post an update on my hard drive config. I ended up doing a RAID 0 and doing a full backup to an external I have connected via eSATA.

Temps have increased *maybe* 1-2 degrees C. Not bad at all! Performance is quite good for programs and gaming. I play a lot of Aion mainly, and load times are just 1-3 seconds now as opposed to about 3-4 seconds (no complaints before or after).

/me knocks on wood that the raid keeps on kicking. At least I have a full backup if it doesn't.

(I just used Windows 7's backup software and it is indeed nice, so thanks Aram G).

I posted a thread at the beginning of the Sager/Clevo forum regarding the HDMI issue and the inability to play blu-ray via HDMI. Has anyone gotten their 8760 to play blu-ray thru HDMI? If so what driver/software and settings are you using? I'm having a helluva time and to be perfectly honest I'm seriously considering returning it due to this. I've tried the driver from Nvidia, the one from Clevo and the modified one posted earler. The driver that came with the machine says the video card is fully HDCP compatible but the modified driver says it isn't. As far as the other drivers that I downloaded from the respective websites (Nvidia and Clevo) will not install at all. Regardless of what driver I use it says Fail to enable HDCP and gives the error code 0107.

I think what frustrates me the most is that this video card is top of the line for NVidia right now and even with different/modified drivers is unable to perform then does this mean ALL other laptops with lesser video cards that have HDMI simply have a nice HDMI port to look at and nothing else? Is it just a corny marketing ploy?

Go into your device manager, then double click on your vid card. Under details go to hardware IDs and post back the full hardware ID string.

ive seen a number of posts where guys with a 8690/8760 have their bd's running thru hdmi and hdtv/ht setup. i myself have it running this way. the gfx and unit is hdcp compliant. here are some things you can try:
    1. go back to driver 186.81 make sure you properly uninstall/clean the other drivers
    2. make sure your hdtv is hdcp compliant.
    3. make sure your hdmi is hdcp compliant and fully working.
    4. unplug/reseat your hdmi cable
    5. try using another bd playback software like windvd or totalmedia theatre
    6. try using slysoft's anydvd-hd to remove the need for hdcp compliance

    hope that helps

I don't think I have 186.81, nor do I know where to get it. The one on NVidia's site is the 195.62 one, the one on Clevo's site is 8.15.11.8647 and the one on Sager's is 8.15.11.8647 also.

Here are the 3 drivers that oficially support your card.

    186.47

    186.81
187.62 - Not WHQL certified, so probably won't help with your issue

When changing drivers ensure to uninstall the old driver, then boot into safe mode and run driver sweeper, then boot back into normal mode and install the new one.

Also, as trvelbug mentioned, if you have a bad HDMI cable, that could also cause your issue.

Ok, I tried to install the 186.81 and when I do it says, "The Nvidia Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit"... The same thing I get when I try to install the one from NVidia's website.

you usually get that when you are trying to install desktop drivers on a mobile gpu.
    1. make sure you are in the mobile section in the nvidia driver download website
    2. if you are installing from laptopvideo2go or some other modded driver site you have to replace in .inf file with the modded .inf which you can also download usually from the same link.

With the 186.81 I linked, you need to extract the driver, then go into the extracted folder and get the nvcv.inf out of the additional infs zip file, then it should install.

    (sorry, forgot about that bit...)

I got it to work, but I had to use Anydvd and there isn't any sound  I have to use the laptop speakers for sound. I guess that's as good as it's gonna get. At least blu ray looks good on my big screen too.

Next challenge: To try and find a way to watch High Def satellite on this beast. I have a Kworld usb tv capture i use on my old HP laptop but when I try using the software that came with it it doesn't work. I downloaded the drivers for Win 7 off the website and installed Blaze Media Pro that works ok but it doesn't extend the edges to 1920x1080. I tried a little program called Digital Video Recorder that actually does extend to that rez but on both of them the video looks like it's trying to be upconverted or something and has alot of jagged edges and tearing still not quite as good as on my old HP pavilion DV8000 17" with a 1440x900 display. So I figure I'll just go high def on it if I can. I would be ok buying a new capture device from Newegg or someone given it works with Win 7 64 bit and has at least decent quality.

to make audio pass thru your hdmi
    1. right click speakers on bottom right
    2. choose playback devices
    3. right click on realtek digital audio
    4. choose set as default
remember to set it back to speakers when you want to use the audio jack or int. speakers for sound

You should have a user manual and driver CDs but I'm not sure about the windows CDs I opted to install my own OS so I only got the drivers disc. If not, you can download the manual and drivers from Sager there's even a service manual out there too but not on Sager's site I don't think.

RJTech has now refreshed their current Clevo lineup with the GTX 285M. The W8x0CU and D900F are ready to ship out with the new card. Also, the X8100 is up for preorder and will be shipping on the 15th. The GTX 285M is also available for purchase separately for $490 including the heatsink tailored specifically for your notebook.

I have placed my order for one and it should be here by Tuesday next week. The W870CU cooling overhaul will resume Friday of that week.

A sh*tload. I also ordered an Intel 6300 wireless card to replace my existing 5300 one. That one should be coming in next week as well. I already have a 160W PSU that I'm going to mod as it is incompatible with the DC jack on our Clevo's. It's a four-pin plug that is used by the 220W PSU's for the D900F and M980NU. What I plan to do this weekend is rip out the existing DC cable on the 160W unit and solder the DC cable with the barrel plug end from my original 120W unit onto the 160W one. I will also see what else I can do in regards to cooling; I may shove a few thermal pads in there and sandwich the existing cold plates with thermal paste. http://cgi.ebay.com/Genuine-AC-Adap...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a572fb5c9

Thanks. Also re-installed the touchpad driver. I think I might have uninstalled it thinking it was related to the fingerprinter reader, which I have no desire to use. Now I see the disable/delay while typing feature.

Surprisingly I use the fingerprint reader all the time -- it actually works unlike my Samsung which uses a different type. You should at least try it IMHO...

I use the FPR all the time too (albeit on my 5793/M570RU).

It's great for windows logon, website passwords and application quick launch - even if it's just for ease of use rather than securty, it's great.

Whew, glad I didn't jump the gun. Same price ($1149) with the 285 now versus 280.

    @SS

Where did you buy the Intel 6300 Wireless card? Is it the most up-to-date wireless card you can get for any laptop? How does it compare to the 6250 WiMax? I've noticed that there is no 6350 listed in Intel's website.

Also, with the 285M from RJTech, do you also get the video card "metal frame"?

I bought my wireless card from a wholesale dealer not too far from where I live. It is Intel's current flagship for wireless cards. There are a few on eBay too but they are really expensive and I do not fully trust the seller; they may be ES 6300's. The 6250 has less performance since it is only a twin antenna card, but has WiMax capabilities, which nobody uses.

The GTX 285M comes with the "metal frame" that holds the card down to the motherboard. It does not come with the heatsink.

I have some MX2 left after replacing thermal paste on my old Fujistsu Siemens laptop (where it lowered temperature by about 4'C which is a lot given that laptop overheats). I'm thinking about replacing the the paste on my W870CU. I would like to hear from people who already did it how much it lowered their temperatures. On http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-mySN-XMG7-c-Notebook.22205.0.html they measured 42-45'C CPU and 40'C GPU idle temperatures. Currently I get 48-52'C CPU and 48'C GPU idle temperatures.

This: http://www.provantage.com/intel-633an-hmwwb~BITE90NH.htm could be legit one right?

I've asked RJTech about the GTX 285M and they've told me that it comes with the heatsink, did they tell you otherwise?

Yes, the one from Provantage is genuine. They dropship directly from Intel so you're getting the real deal. Shipping is absurdly expensive though.

I'm pretty sure that it's only the bracket that it will come with. If the card did come with the heatsink, RJTech would have made two separate options for the W860CU and W870CU since they both have different heatsinks.
