At the risk of starting a war lol, which is the better CPU for gaming, the i7-620 duel core with the higher stock speed, or the i7-720 which hopefully will have more games developed for it in the future ?

1. There are a number of websites available that provide instructions on how to install the O.S. This is surprisingly easy to do though.
2. I'd go with Windows 7 Home, but my needs and budget may differ from yours.
3. See here for instructions on how to do this: http://lifehacker.com/5403100/dual+boot-windows-7-and-ubuntu-in-perfect-harmony
4. That it's awesome
5. Hmm... I like Western Digital but their 500gb drive is only 5400rpm
Why'd you go for the 280 instead of the 5870? -
Hey all! So does anyone know of any remotes that work with the internal IR sensor on the front of these notebooks? I've been trying to find a nice media center remote to go with my laptop. Anyone know?
-
Nevermind, took some elbow grease
-
The 720 will be better for gaming .....
-
I didn't know any better....
I will be using this for AutoCAD. Does anyone here use this software. I'm an Engineering Student and figured that this would do well enough for the 3D features of AutoCAD 2010. Any thoughts here? -
both will do ok ... You could flash your 280 to a quadro and then it woudl be super FAST
But yea ... -
It will do fine.

For those with the Sager NP8760 / Clevo W870CU getting an upgrade to the ATI HD 5870 here is what you will get in a kit as soon as they are available...

Buying one from a US reseller will usually get you a case, as you can see from Moo's unboxing pictures in his review.
Actually, there are Canadian Clevo resellers. I don't remember any of them offhand, except the (in)famous Eurocom (which has a bad reputation on these boards), but I know they exist. -
Is that heatsink identical to the one shipped with the 280/285M?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

The heatsink for the MR 5870 is not identical to the heatsink for the GTX 280M/GTX 285M. The MR 5870 has a slightly different layout for the electrical components, primarily the voltage chokes, and thus the heatsink has different placements for the embossments.

I'm getting ready to purchase a Sager NP8760. I have had many desktops, but this is my first notebook.
When I mentioned at work I was considering a notebook, I was strongly advised to purchase a 3-year warranty.
The standard warranty with the Sager NP8760 is 3-year labor, 1 year parts. From what I have read, Sager has a strong reputation and is well-built. I have two questions:
1) Would it be advantages to spend the additional $259.00 for 2 additional years parts warranty?
2) And do I necessarily need a LCD Accidental Damage Protection warranty ($100.00)?
I intend my laptop to be a desktop replacement, but I do occasionally travel.
Thank you for any advice you can offer. -
Where did you get that from?
I have been asking RJTech but they don't have any yet.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

I work at times for a reseller, got a hold of one kit for now, only one.

I would say it's worth it. You never know when your LCD will be cracked from travel and you'll be glad you do have it.

Anyone ever had their subwoofer start "popping" or "pulsating?" Mine just started doing it randomly when I was talking on Trillian and finally stopped after I turned off the laptop twice.
For those with the Targus 180w power supply it works fine if you use the S1 plug (yellow end on the plug.) No issues so far. -
What are the benefits of using a 180 vs a 120 if you don't have a 920?
-
I already had the power supply from when I had a GatewayFX so to me it is the benefit of owning another power supply

Now that my 8760 has shipped, I need to get a mouse and some external speakers.
After reading several gaming mouse threads, I realize that there is no one best mouse. It all comes down to personal preference (ask 100 people what their favorite mouse is and you'll get 40 different answers). But are there a few mice out there that work better for this laptop than others?
Also, any suggestions on external speakers for the 8760 (I don't need them to be mobile, just something that will sit on my desk).
Thank you,
NightBandit -
Hi mate,
For the mouse question I dont think there is are mouse that work better for notebooks, unless your talking about those little girls mice, which are crap for gaming and pretty much anything. I heard nothing but good things about the Razor Deathadder however, I also heard that its a bit light and doesnt feel like you get what you pay for (thats only opinions I have read though). And lacks options and dare I say some gimmicks that other mice possess.
Today I purchased the Coolmaster Sentinel Advance, its about the same price and has all the features you can want from a mouse as well as added weights, I highly suggest you check it out.
As for speaks I follow a recognized PC magazine called 'Custom PC' and in this months addition they did a speak review and for the price they highly recommended these, nothing flashy or to expensive but had good value sound quality.
Sentinel Advance:

Speakers:
http://reviews.cnet.com/pc-speakers/genius-sw-n2-1/4505-3179_7-33213702.html
The speakers get some up and down reviews, However all the products I have bought that came recommended from Custom PC I have GREATLY enjoyed. -
I figured out what my issue was with the subwoofer module, there is a center screw hole on the bottom almost dead-center that I had overtightened and it was causing it. Not sure why this would of been it, but it definitely fixed the issue by loosening the screw.
On another note for those that say the speakers in this thing suck should try these sound options:
-Set to 5.1 in the realtek control manager
-Tick Center, Subwoofer, Rear pair (uncheck side pair)
-Make sure front, left, and surround full-range speakers are ticked
-Make sure speaker fill, swap center/subwoofer output, and enable bass management is checked
-Go into the sound panel (control panel>sound) and click on Speakers and go to configure. Verify 5.1 Surround is set there and click cancel
-Click on the speakers icon again and click properties this time and under levels jack up Center/Subwoofer to 100
-Click the enhancements tab and check Equalizer and left-click it. I set mine to club because it overall sounded best for treble/bass
-Click ok and exit out of the control panel
The above settings made mine go from "omg this sucks to wow these are decent." The volume level also was dramatically increased. For picking an EQ setting you may want to have Winamp streaming music so you can hear the difference in tone. -
Thanks rancid but I just did all that and they still suck.

Don't overtighten screws  !

Great info! I was just coming to the forums to see if this question has already been asked. I just got the e-mail that my NP8760 has shipped, anything else I need to know or do immediately after I get it?
I read this whole thread back when I was trying to decide between the G73 and Sager and I will go back and read it again now that mine has shipped. -
Play games!
-
LOL, is it the volume or the quality? I was more concerned with the overall volume and overwhelming treble which I seemed to of tamed. They definitely aren't home theater speakers
Anybody know if the eSATA port is a Type-I or Type-L? Two cables I have won't fit. -
Well, you would think a 4.1 setup would sound decent but these are pathetic.
All tiny sounding with no range. I think my wife's M11x sounds better. -
I just kinda figured in the reading I did on this that either headphones or external speakers were mandatory. If I can get something out of the system it'd just be bonus.
Also, random note: not being allowed to swear on this forum has made me conscious of just how much I swear. Hahaha. -
You would hate the Asus G51 then, a guy at work got one this week and they are the worst sounding things I've ever heard. My iphone has more volume then his speakers do
-
Dont they have cruddy screens too?
-
My screen is the best LED i have ever owned ...
-
No, I'm talking about the G51. And not the Jx either. There are like a zillion different G51s, but I swear I saw at least one had a terrible screen.
Am I imagining this? -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Mine is too the BEST one so far... -
I do not reccomend sticking it in the screen though .... It is not beneficial for the screen lets say
-
Can someone do me a favor and check what LAN device they have? (not wireless) Mine isn't even showing up in Windows device manager and when I try to install the driver off Sager's website it is telling me basically no device found
-
Disabled in the bios?
-
Im lucky, my new 8760 gpu had artifacts so they sent for a rma, and i asked about upgrade and they said the 285 and 5870 were my choices, funny thing is the 5870 is 70 bucks less, this is straight from sager. so i will have my ati 5870 in my laptop on wendsay
happy me cause i preordered the asus g73 2 times... i canceled both. mainly cause i wanted a ati 5870 for top edge now i got all i want. (for the time being)
-
Checked, no love in the bios (very basic.) I am going to be super pissed off if the onboard NIC died.
I am creating a Linux Live boot CD to see if it is a Windows driver issue but it doesn't even show up in device manager now
-
Mine doesn't either. The NIC showed a couple of times but then disappeared.
I tried various methods of getting it back in device manager but no go. The one thing I have not tried is using it, though. lol
Let me know if that live cd works.
Oh, and drake - I tried the new batch of 023 HyperX modules and BSOD right after installing. lol
FWIW My system does not like HyperX memory. I didn't test it for errors so not sure if it was another bad stick or two. -
I will check now under Win7 and Vista 64 and let you know... I have used mine one time when dumping over some large files but that was it....
Edit: Its an Auto Sensing plug ... I just plugged the cable in and left device manager open, sure enough it appears the moment you plug it in and then vanishes right when you take it out... Power saving feature is what im guessing...
So when Rancid tried to reinstall the drivers it could not find anything because the Bios is most certainly disabling it in which case it cant find anything to install to ... -
Yeah, I figured once I plug a cable into it it will pop up.
At least I was hoping
-
You are the man Quad, that was it. My DSL line at my desk isn't working so it never was showing up. Popped a cable in from another guy's cube and it works just as you said. I've never seen that before on a NIC.
For Linux fans, the NIC does not have the proper driver in the kernel to install, you have to manually get it from their website: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#2 & instructions how to install: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1022411 -
Is that the same ram purchased here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104158
Sure hope mine works okay. I ordered my laptop with standard ram, so if the Hyper X doesnt work I am not shut down. I have had trouble Rmaing ram at newegg in the past. They lost the Ram in the receiving warehouse and tried to say I didnt send it.
From reading, seems like a lot of people are having trouble with this Ram. -
I've ordered the kit at least 6 times and 1 kit was bad.
-
Is the kit above better than the one that comes stock ?
-
Well, my system has a fit everytime I use hyperx. lol
The first sticks I used was def bad but I didn't test the second ones with memtest. -
The stock ram that comes with your laptop has a slower timings of:
9-9-9-24
where the HyperX has timings of:
7-7-7-20
Your memory access is a little faster, maybe 1-3% is all, but hey every little bit counts.
