othonda, thank you for your reply. I have couple of question if you don't mind.

    1) Is it easy to buy a Blu-ray drive in the future and just put inside the 8760? if yes it will even more lightening my burden.

    2) How hot can the PSU can get on the 8760? and is it alright if I use it on a multi plug adapter?

    3) Will the case that you get alongside the laptop alright or do I need another case for protection?

    4) How long of these laptop component can last me in terms of future proofing?

    5) Can I also upgrade the component other than the HDD, Memory, in the future? like let's say in the future they have intel i-8 or something, can I just buy and put it inside the 8760? or these CURRENTLY listed components are the max that it can be upgraded into?

    6) Anyone living in Singapore or any other asia pacific region (with the 30+ C ) can tell me how hot 8760 run under intense gaming with no/minimal air con?

    Thanks all for reading,

    Tora

    6) http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...3-gpu-overclock-so-few-mhz-4.html#post6128199

My furmark result when I was in singapore at 35C ambient temp, with 900/1100 OC, the core temp is actually 85C, the 93C is the memIO. Un-OC temp runs at around 75-77C in SG. 8760 should have the same cooling as a 8690, if not better.

    1) It is just easy and you don't have to unscrew anything on the computer.
    3) It should do fine.
    5) I don't really know, but I think these are the max components. Maybe sager will give a better nvidia GPU in the future, but I really don't know.

About 1), is it really true that you don't have unscrew anything to replace the DVD? I don't know any better methods than having to open up the whole motherboard because I can't find any screws underneath at the DVD part. Wanted to put in a caddy but found too troublesome.

@hmmlaptop: That is also my understading. Although I have never attempted it, others on the forum have said replacing a DVD drive is a major undertaking that requires almost complete disassembly.

Let me also second Othonda's advice. Opt for the slower processor to get the SSD. The increase in speed and responsiveness from an SSD in everyday use is astonishing. It has very little effect on game play, except perhaps for initial loading. If I had to choose between the 920XM and the SSD in my notebook, I would go with SSD every time.

    1. From the posts above it sounds like it would be easy. In the 8760 owners lounge page 1 there is a link to download the service manual. It explains how to replace components. Also in the long run it's cheaper to buy the Blue-Ray up front, if you can swing it, I would.

    2. I mainly use an aftermarket 160W supply versus the stock 120W that came with the machine, so I am not really sure how warm it gets. I would not worry about it though; they are designed to work at pretty hot temps. Multi plug adapter should be okay as long as you don't exceed the overall power draw as specified by the manufacture.

    3. The case that comes with the unit is real basic, but seems more than adequate to use for everyday use. If using it I would not go around dropping the laptop on the pavement as the padding is not made for that level of protection. My machine mainly stays at home, so when I do need to transport I use a nice backpack that I bought for use with my Asus G1. The Sager barely fits but that is what I use.

    4. I hate the idea of future proofing. As an engineer by profession I have come to realize ages ago it’s an impossible concept. The problem with it is there is always something new around the corner that’s faster, better, fancier, etc… I look at it in a pragmatic way of as long as the machine is performing the task you have in a reasonable fashion (be it in time or FPS) then it’s good enough. I went over three years with my Asus G1 and thought it was pretty good the whole time I had it. Based how fast my Sager is I could easily be more than satisfied with its performance for even a longer period than my Asus, The Sager I have is an absolute beast performance wise. Others around here like to get the latest and greatest whenever it comes out.

    5. You can, The CPU, GPU can be upgraded. There will be one or possibly two refreshes of processors for this machine before a new architecture that would not be compatible. The GPU is another story. It’s really hard to tell what upgrades will become available, and be made to work with the 8760. There is talk of the new Nvidia GTX480 coming out soon, who knows what ATI has in store next. Whether or not these will work is unforeseeable.

    6. With the very good cooling of these machines you should be okay, even in a hot ambient temperature climate your in.

Everyone that has been reading/commenting, I really appreciate your kind help!! This forum has been super helpful (back when lurking, until now) and has the most low count in terms of elitist/troll among other forums I ran across!

Once again, I thank you for the kind replies, and I will make up my mind whether I can live with 720QM or not (I am cursing myself after reading that notebookcheck.com and couple of forums about how 720QM is the basic entry level and if I want to experience the "real" quad core of this gen, I should go for the 820QM and the cache is also 8Mb {don't know what it do else than it's the "tunnel" for processor to work, but unmistakeably it's one of the-higher-the-number-the-better sort of cliche} ).

If i were you, I would stick with the i7-720QM for gaming. The 820QM will only give you 1 FPS more and this only because it has more frequency.

Yes it is a single screw at the back of the drive. On the 870 you have to remove the hard drive first to get to the screw. So just open the main cover on the bottom pull out the exposed HD and remove the screw underneath then slide out the dvd.

Thanks, already got it from Sager website, mediafire doesn't seem to work over here, damn the great firewall of china. Now I just have to get a sata II caddy to slot in a ssd, the one I bought was a sata I.

The caddy being SATA I should not matter as long as the board supports SATA II. I doubt the caddy type matters as it just connects the pins on your drive to the plug on the board.

6-7 months in, finally hitting my first real build quality issue. My battery doesn't appear to be seating cleanly or flush any more, which makes the whole laptop kind of like a table with one short leg. The rubber foot on the battery is now a little "longer" than the others, so the whole laptop wobbles.

I can push the battery in so it's flush (only moves a mm or two at most), but it just comes right back out that same amount as soon as I let go. It's like something in the case is warped or bent or something. I haven't done anything to it other than my normal daily transport to work and back.

Twice now while transporting from work the battery lost connection too, which meant it killed my standby.

    Hrmph.

Thanks guys :D I'm very excited!

I have one maybe not really on-topic question. Where in here can I find a thread that will supply information with all the necessity action to do when switching from a different OS. For example, How can I move the files from my mac if my external HDD (all 3 of them) are all FSS formatted, not NTFS.. >_<

Last, what kind of a cool program can I get for windows 7 that can be functioned as a pretty widget as I often saw from many people's desktop screenshot in this forum?

PS: Babyhemi, care to pm me about the info from your sig? (Soon...Clevo X7200 lowest price period!!) :D

    Cheers!

Anyone know why my pc beeps once in a while?(sager8760)

It never did that but since a couple days, its started beeping while flashing the caps lock and numlock keys. IT beeps for between 5-10 seconds then stops... then can come back 30 seconds later or 30 minutes later... I know it could be overheathing HOWEVER, it did twice when I was starting the notebook so it wasnt hot at all... I watched the temps and the cores are mostly between 47c and 52c.

I cleaned everything underneath to make sure and jacked it up a bit so let the air go underneath more easily but its still beeping. It can takes hours or minutes before it beeps, I never know. I close all programs and still no change...

    Anyone? :/

So I recently got this laptop and am very happy with it (specs in sig) but i have been having a problem with it. The audio stutters in games occasionally, accompanied by the video stutter, all lasting about a second or two. I have tried different audio drivers, have tried disabling the audio altogether. Disabling the audio proved to stop the video stutter that was accompanied by the audio stutter, so that leads me to believe that it is in fact an audio problem.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, please shed some light on this.

    Thanks

I've been having exactly the same problem but with an nvidia gpu and thought it was just the display driver, but now I see you got an ati gpu. That means that it is not a nvidia issue. Maybe Realtek I don't know. Anyone else any suggestion?

Hmm its strange I have not encountered the sound stutter problem in the past 4-5 hours, and I am not sure if i did anything out of the ordinary to fix it. All i did was first use driversweeper in safemode to clean out the realtek audio drivers and ati drivers, then once back in windows i installed latest realtek drivers and ati catalyst 10.6a drivers and since then have not seen stuttering in CS:S, when before it happened every 5 minutes or so.

BTW i got the c300 from newegg and it is fast, boots windows in 13 secs.

So guys, what should I do after receiving my 8760? which BIOS should I download, or maybe not necessary? and what about the GPU? any essential driver update or I'll be fine with the current?

5 more days until I can see mine... :0

MIn my opinion, you shouldn't update your BIOS unless there is a critical problem. Now with the drivers, as far as I know, Sager doesn't update their drivers often so you can download the latest one from either nvidia or laptopvideo2go.

Or better yet, from AMD/ATI: ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

Edit: Agree about the BIOS. It will come with the most recent available Sager version. Sager will release an updated version when and if necessary. Otherwise leave the BIOS alone.

And further, take your time. There is no need to rush to update video drivers. The most recent official release is 10.4, but 10.5 is expected by the end of this week. Just get used to the new system and get your primary programs, utilities and games installed and adjusted. There will be plenty of time to tweak and fine-tune things.

    Thanks for replies :D

Anyone have any recommendation on a nice pair of headphones to go along with the laptop? I prefer nice quality wireless with good audio but sadly, my budget is quite low on this.. it's going to be around $100 - $150.

    Thanks again in advance.

I suggest the logitech G35's. i have them and love them, but unfortunately, not wireless.

Just wanted to pop in and say that THIS COMPUTER IS AWESOME! idle temps are 39-42C @200/300. load temps are~ 76C without trimming the cage (yet) using furmark extreme burning test for about 10 minutes. 71C while playing wow. pretty good temperatures i would say. I also plan on eventually trimming the cage, and buying some thermal pads to replace the ones on the GPU. anyone know what size thermal pads I would need to buy?

New NP8760 Owner. Have the ATI 5870 card. Ambient right now is about 22C.

My GPU temps are pretty high. I originally ran OCCT GPU test. This easily reached 100C. I shut it down once it got that high. I tried to replace the thermal paste but this did nothing. I think it made it worse, slightly. I've updated to the 10.4 drivers to get the GPU temps. Running HWiNFO32 I am seeing the GPU Thermal Diode and GPU MemIO at very high temps. Idles at about 70C.

I just used the Radeon Bios Editor to up the fan speeds a bit. Not helping much, MemIO and GPU Thermal Diode are down to 67C, a full 16C higher than the GPU DispIO(Core). I'm thinking about trimming the cage or at least bending it so that the heat sync makes more contact with the memory. I'm cautious of trimming the cage because I got the full 3yr warranty from sager and really don't want to do this if it will void the warranty.

Any suggestions? I've had the laptop shut down on me once already. Playing fallout 3, for about 20 minutes, I've seen the MemIO temp reach 108C, pretty sure the shut down point is 109C.

Thanks for the reply Diablo85. I googled it. It looks nice and features are top notch.. One thing is lacking for me though is that it uses only USB plug and I planned to use it with my ipod touch as well. Also the mic, I prefer if it's detachable. Any advice? :D

sorry to hear about your problem Marz001. Looks like you need to RMA it. It maybe faulty GPU, with your ambiance being 22C and all. I hope mine will arrive safely and have no problem >.<

PS: Just noticed voice morphing.. How cool is that? :p (geeky I know, but it's cool IMO XD)

Way, way too high. So high that I suspect that your GPU fan is not working at all or, if working, at a substantially reduced RPM. The existing temps are far beyond what trimming the can will address. I would open it up and see if the fan is working. If not, it is even money that a power lead or connector is not properly seated. Check and reseat. Otherwise, you need a new fan. If the fan is working, then either the card is defective or any or all of the paste, pads and heatsink are failing. As you suggest, since the memory temps are so high, the pads are the most likely culprit. In either event, a new computer should not be subject to such problems. Call support; the seller is responsible for such defects.

have you looked at this post yet?

as far as the mic goes, its not detachable, but it folds up when you aren't using it and it automatically mutes the mic when folded. voice morphing is pretty funny actually, but i dont use voice chat very often unless im on skype with my grandparents (which probably wouldnt find any of them very funny)

Only USB plug? What plug does ipod touch use? If it's some mac propriety stuff then only macbooks will have those ports.

You probably have a combo of thermal pads and cage working against you. bending the can out is pretty simple and non destructive if you are looking to try and fix it yourself. These temps are pretty much what I had when I first got mine.

Thanks again for the reply :)

I mean to use it outside the house, like when I'm travelling, if I carry a headset with a mic, it's potraying a very geeky/not suitable image in my head :( hehe yeah I can imagine them hang up on you many times thinking that it's a wrong contact :p

fzhfzh, iPod touch just have one standart 3.5mm audio Jack and that's it I believe. >_<

Is this applicable even for the W860CU? And do "all" thermal pads need to be 2mm?

seeing as how i usually only take the headset with me to work, i dont wear it when im walking around town. but i would imagine it would leave a fairly geeky impression with passers-by. the only thing i would recommend is that if you keep them in a backpack/messenger bag while traveling, get a case to put them in as you wouldn't want them to break (especially seeing as how the earmuff part twists about 30 degrees to the front or back depending on how they sit on your head)

Fan is working, not sure if there is still a problem with the fan but I do feel it blowing hot air, haven't looked at it while it was on. I did use RBE to change the fan speeds. Tried to max it at 75C I think. I re-did the thermal paste again last night. It improved a little. Fallout 3 maxed at 96C. The OCCT test still topped 100C, let it go as far as 105C before I stopped it. I may try and do the paste again, I've been resting the heat sync half way on before applying any pressure to get the screws in place. Once this is done I apply pressure and screw in the screws. I think, if the cage is preventing it from making full contact I may be putting too much pressure on and causing air to get in after I release. I'm going to try and test tonight.

I may try this, just not sure how to bend it yet.

Not sure about the w860cu, since I don't have it, but i would assume it used the same or similar heatsink. And yes, when I opened mine up and removed the gpu heatsink I noticed they were all thick pads.

And you replaced all of them with thinner 2mm pads?

I just set it up, noticeable drop in temps. I'll probably use this for now and not play any games. Ordered a laptop cooler and some mx-3 which is supposed to be better than AS5 but a couple C.

Also thinking of picking this up. I just can't imagine it's any more powerful then the stock fan so it may not help much.

The metal is beyond easy to bend with your fingers even.
