lol i miss FSB because if that's full over clocking ... i am sad to look forward to the future![]()

It seems that mobile CPU overclocking has hit a brick wall here. But I'm not surprised. Part of me is happy to see FSB overclocking gone with the i7.
I am definately not paying $1k for a 920XM. But I will hunt for a cheap one. If I play my cards right, I may just snag one for $500 from a friend of mine that works at one of the Fremont tech warehouses. -
Don't get me wrong, I know the CPUs are equal in doped but I miss the challange ...
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
What challenge? Oh yeah, overclocking and benchmarking as high as the sky and posting results on public forums for e-peen, that challenge.
-
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
The $1150 is insane for a 920xm, true, but at a full OC @ 2.53ghz, you are looking at a 800mhz bump over the 1.73ghz of the 820qm. That's a 46% increase in performance versus the 820qm which is nothing to sneeze at (assuming the 920xm you get can handle the 4 bin jump); and that really helps pare down the bang/buck factor.
@ $600 820qm = 2.88mhz / dollar
@ $1150 920xm (2.53ghz full OC) = 2.2mhz / dollar.
Still in favor of the 820, but not as drastically as some schmoe who ponies up the extra $$ for a 920xm in, let's say a Alienware M15x or 8690 and is paying 1.73mhz / dollar, ouch. -
So the problem is hardware not software (BIOS)? And if I buy it now, after 1-2 years fracking netbooks will have 8 gigs and I'll be sitting with a fat piece of junk with 4 GB RAM...?
-
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
Considering Win7 runs nicely even with 2gb of ram, 4gb is more than enough. Let's not blow it out of proportion and imply you need 8GB a few years from now or your system is useless. With that being said, hopefully it is an issue that can be addressed and fixed with a bios update.
-
You said it SS,...that challenge...
Me, I just want a top shelf rig that plays games well, with nice screen which this seems to have,...plus BR DVD..fast boot times with SDD...I've yet to see the perfect rig...all is a compromise...and I ain't gonna wait for perfection..
-
It's the same like buying Ferrari with a 200 km/h max speed. You know that you might not need this speed every day, but it still sucks to the bone just knowing that.
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Support for more than 4GB will come. Don't worry about it. It's only a BIOS issue.
-
Bang for your memory buck...8GB at how much.. vs 4GB at how much... and what are we going to do with 8GB? really do with it..in the forseeable future.. 2GB is maybe a bit lean if we have a 1GB video card and the RAM is remapped to the card, so 4 makes sense...I cannot see the value of 8GB, and cost is not an issue for me.
Hey, what happened, I was a newbee a minute ago, now a notebook enthusiast..go figure.. -
Yea the e-peen is happy when I oc a ghz over stock n save myself alot of money
kinda like when I unlocked my tricore and OCD it to 4 ghz
-
Please someone remind me not to buy used overclocked to max cpus...
:rolleyes2:

Um ? Why ?

babyhemi keep them coming
Does Turbo Mode kick in when you OC it by 4x?
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Interesting. That's a HannStar Display panel in yours.
-
Nice! Can't wait to see some benchmarks. Definately keep it coming man.
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Yes it does. Even at 4x OC it moves between 2.0 to 3.7 depending what you are doing...past my bedtime, more later -
I would've gotten the 8760 except for me 17" is too big, 15.6 is nice n large, but not too big.
-
Although the 8760 is a bit smaller than something like a 9280, the 16:9 aspect ratio makes them a tad smaller than 16:10 notebooks. but the 15.6 is much smaller having the same aspect ratio.
-
Hi babyhemi, does HyperThreading (HT) works in conjunction with turbo when u OC to 4x? because notebookjournal claims that OC to 4x will cause stability issues IF HT is not disabled. wonder if this claim is true. cheers
Edit update : and temperatures under full load at 4x OC if u can. also did u notice any stability issues at 4x OC? thanks -
That is a very likely scenario, but it depends from CPU to CPU. Some may not be very stable at 4x other may be, remember that Intel guarantees you only 2.0 Ghz. Above that is all up to your luck in getting a good CPU.
-
Fear the Moo Cow...look at that rep....beware Sparky..
Besides, I like the brush...
-
I felt the same, but cannot wait as I am going overseas and travelling after next week..need to parachute drop as it is....so I got the 17". Given I can overclock my 920..think I will like it better anyway. Bit more to drag around but will get used to it.
-
Have you been able to overclock on your rig? I heard one could not. I had the 9280 on order but didn't get it in the end, needed a bit more portability.
-
Tried for +1, but have to spread around some rep 1st. I see there is Kingston HyperX 1333 memory, did that come with the rig or did you add it after? What is the CAS on it, or model number? Very interested...
Thanks

novatech.co.uk states that there are 4 speakers and 1 subwoofer in their 17'' Clevo clone, so I have to ask - isn't subwoofer bad for HDD's?
the thread is about this model, isn't it?
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/laptop/range/x80ca17.3.html -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
It's not a subwoofer, rather more of an low-mid range amplifier. No, it's not bad for the hard drive.
-
I noticed that the chassis of the original 17'' Sager/Clevo is different from that one in http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/laptop/range/x80ca17.3.html Do you think the quality is the same? I would pretty much buy a base model (incl. W7 Ultimate), that is 1800£ (2500$), so I don't wanna miss on this one.
-
That's actually the M570TU in the picture.
-
What does that mean? That it's and old chassis? They clearly state that it goes with core i7 CPU, 2 HDD's, 260/280gtx, 1080p LED, well the specs are pretty much the same than those of a Sager NP8760/Clevo W870CU, isnt' it?
-
I think they are just using the wrong picture, that's all. You should get the normal W870CU when you order from them.
It would be just too awesome if the good old M570TU will still carry one with a new mobo. I would be all down for changing my mobo
and keep mine on top of its game. But I am 99.5% sure this is not going to happen.
-
I see you're from UK. Do you think novatech is the best choice? kobaltcomputers is down
-
I have better experiences with Kobalt and they have good pricing. Novatech also used to have very good pricing but when I've tried to get into more details regarding an order I wanted to place they simply never answered.
So from my experience, Kobalt has better costumer care. -
Their website is down (usually not a good sign), do you know if they have actual store (like novatech has) where I could take a look at the real thing (London or nearby)?
EDIT: kobaltcomputers.co.uk is not down, something was wrong from my side -
I am pretty sure they only operate on-line.
-
Their base of operations is close to London (Coulsdon, inside M25 just north of M23). If you contact them (either Neil@Kobalt on here or otherwise) they may well be able to arrange a visit.

Really enjoying the beast, getting good temps under stress of different kinds... here is a video editing stress temp after a little while...This one seems SO MUCH lighter and sleeker that the NP9280 and the M17x Alienware! Maybe because it is!!
more later
-
I love seeing that 42 degrees on the GPU..
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
That 42*C will need to take a trip with me to Siberia once I get my hands on one. I'm more curious about the fan thresholds. At what temperature will the fan turn on and at what temperature will the fan turn off. I hope it's like the 9800M GTX fan thresholds on my M570TU: 42*C on and 38*C off.
-
Can you run FurMark on it and post some temps?
If you don't mind
-
Nice temps, I should have ordered one of these instead of my Sager NP8690. I just like 17'' more. Run some gaming benchmarks and post the results.
-
I have both W860CU and W870CU - what thermal specs do you need? Any specific test procedures to follow?
-
I actually need a pretty strange benchmark ran.. It's called the USPS temp test. Here's what we do. Pack up your W870CU in it's original packaging and ship it to the address I PM you. Then when it arrives I take screen shots of the CPU temp to see how the CPU handled the stress of shipping.
We can do that for the W860CU as well, if you'd like.

@Panther911
I'm looking for a person who has both laptops. Can you post a picture that shows them side by side with each other? I want to see how big is the W870CU compared to the W860CU
Thanks for the favor. -

I'll second that! I posted the same request over at xoticpc and haven't heard back on it.

Good lord.. What side of the road do they drive on in Germany? So not getting into a car with that guy.Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015
