It's been covered, there's no BIOS support. Even if there was, there would be power issues with the motherboard.

Interesting, but again let's go over the checklist of what stands in the way of shoehorning the GTX 480M into the W870CU.

GTX 480M heatsink. (This comes with the card itself when bought as a kit from a Clevo distributor.)
W880CU CPU heatsink. (Including the proper thermal pads to mate with the inductors.)
    W880CU backpanel.
W880CU BIOS. (Here it seems like the W880CU BIOS works on the W870CU.)
    180W PSU.
    Loss of warranty.
    Time.
    A buttload of money.
And hope to god that the motherboard can deliver enough power to the GTX 480M and whatever CPU is coupled with it. And you guys know that nobody settles for the 35W CPU's. Underclocking the GTX 480M isn't an option for the greedy either.

Not too many Clevo distributors are willing to sell the W880CU CPU heatsink individually, as that is the one component that is most likely unobtainable. Now, is it worth it? You be the judge. But I can tell you that the cost estimate for all of the above is going to be around $1,200 before shipping and tears. You would be better off just buying a bare W880CU and transferring the components from your W870CU into it. The leftovers can go on sale. You would be shelling out a bit more paper, but you end up with a machine that is designed to handle the GTX 480M as well as the few other additional features such as USB 3.0.

I'm thinking about buying it withing a month and I'm wondering....
-is there a refresh coming anytime soon
-will the price go down anytime soon
    -which one 5870 or 285 ?
-cpu for gaming, fps games, mmo's ?

These units still have a good life expectancy in them. The w880cu has one USB 3.0 port, and comes with a GTX480m, and is MUCH more expensive.

Yes, I'm not even lookin at w880cu, way too expensive :)

does it make sense though buying laptop without usb 3.0 port right now ?
I'm guessing this will last me for no more than 2yrs, just wonder how fast 3.0 will become a standard.

The only thing that will benefit from USB3 are external hard drives. Everything is backward compatible, so really it's not an issue.

Well after having my laptop for over a week I can safely say that this thing is AWESOMEEEE. Lol. The screen is beautifullll, and overall the thing is just smooth as butter with anything I throw at it. If anyone's interested I can upload a video of Avatar running in Blue-Ray on this screen; it looks CRAZYYYY good. I've never seen better visuals in a movie, lol.

I would recommend a cheaper processor such as the 840QM or 740QM unless you plan on overclocking, and get an SSD instead. The performance of these drives is awesome and you should notice a more overall speed increase.

Guess ill stick with the i7 720 for this 8760 since at 1920x1080 we are looking at roughly 1-2fps difference between the almighty 940x vs the puny i7 720... If we were running lower resolutions the CPUs really start to shine though... Even in GTA4 a game known for using the CPU to a good degree we can see its its still not even worth it ...

I can squeeze 2fps more from a baby overclock on the GPU if im not happy lol...

    Google Translate

My old 8760 had a 920 in it but i guess i was not gaining anything with the faster CPU like i thought... This is purely from a gaming perspective though not for encoding etc where a bigger CPU will shine but ill use my desktop for those tasks... Figured this might help some people thinking spending alot more on a bigger CPU will be that much more beneficial to Gaming...

Some games though like WOW or Starcraft 2 will see gains from the CPU bumps since they fall more squarely on the CPU then GPU...

Hey, Quad! Welcome back to 8760 world, you've been missed. Amazing and instructive article about the relative performance of the i7's in game play. The benchers are never gonna buy it.

    Thanks :) ...

I did my best to point out this is purely a gaming thing and nothing more... If your into hardcore benching and number crunching then a beefier CPU is where its at but for people on a budget they may want to invest that money elsewhere like an SSD ....

Clearly the bottle neck is the GPU at that res...

The one benchmark that surprised me the most was the GTA4 one since i know that game loves i7s and CPU speed so again it all comes back to the GPU choking..

Couple things to note about that review:

    1. 940xm was still constrained by the TDP limit which those of us on NBR know how to get around with TS.

    2. The 8760 is a single GPU system so it's GPU is a bottleneck long before the CPU in the majority of games out there except RTS games.

So yeah for a single GPU system, even with throttlestop, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to go with a 920/940 setup unless you're REALLY into RTS games or do CPU intensive work.

Hope someone can toss me a bit of advice and info. I just ordered an 8760, don't have it yet, but when I get it I'll be on 28.8 dialup, so whatever I need to download I'd like to do it ahead of time.

I'm just wondering what basic set of benches I need to run just to reassure myself all the parts are working properly, roughly the settings I should use (like resolution), and the ballpark numbers I'm looking for, for a Sager 8760 with 740 and 5870 and 4 gig ram. I've read through this entire thread, as well as the review thread. I sort of have a rough idea, like Furmark for temps. But I have no experience with this sort of thing and you guys talk in shorthand a lot of the time so it's a bit confusing.

Anyway, if someone could, that'd be great. Sorry in advance if this type of post is strenuously frowned upon, I posted a whole thread about this and just got a "wrong place" reply so I don't know. I'm new here obviously.

I just use AMD clock tool for gpu overclocking and ATi Tool and Prime95 for stress testing. HWMonitor for temp monitoring. All of these programs are relatively small.

The biggest thing you want to download is the latest Catalyst driver here.

Hey Guys, after being burned with the Asus G73JH, I looked around at some msi's but I like the screen on this better. This is what im considering getting from Xoticpc today, i need this laptop for college, but also I wanna be able to use Final Fantasy 14 on it. What do you think of this build? And are there any major issues i should know about this laptop?

Thanks mate for the info, I had only downloaded the manual but not the service manual! All the information that is needed are inside!

P.S. I have a question regarding the RAM. From the store that I bought the laptop they said to me that the memory can be upgraded up to 8gb. In the service manual it says that it can be upgraded up to 4 gb. Which information of these two is correct?

Hello again! Where can someone buy a motherboard for the clevo w870cu? What will be the cost of it? I searched the internet but couldn't find anything!

P.S. I understand that the laptop has two memory slots. Why programs like everest or speccy state that there are four slots? If you want I can upload pictures showing 4 memory slots in the program.

Most vendors would probably be able to supply you with a motherboard if you asked, you might want to try RJTech as they specialise in parts/barebones.

The chipset has support for 4 slots, only 2 were implemented by clevo.

    Hi,
I've searched around but didn't find if it's possible to flash 280m GTX with 285m gtx BIOS. If so could you point for instructions. If it's not possible then I would lke to OC my 280m GTX

it's more reliable to overclock via 280m bios than flash the 285m bios. OCing is really easy. You can stary with nvidia system tools and once you find the limit, take NiBiTor, load your bios and start tweaking. Then flash your vbios with nvflash.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forums and I'm interested in purchasing a Sager 8760 sometime within the next 1-2 months. After all the reviews I've read the only problem I'm sketchy about is the temperature as I don't really care about battery life or the fan noise. I plan on buying through XoticPC. I remember I read somewhere that I could ask XoticPC to run a heat sink check or something to have them make sure the temperatures are stable. Would they do that for me? And is it even called a heat sink check? (I'm not really "techy" so forgive me for my lack of knowledge :()

    Thanks in advance :)

Who's having trouble with cooling? One of the main reasons to buy this thing is for the cooling capacity. The w860cu owners found that removing the CPU sticker helped lower temps some more, but we don't have that issue.

I haven't seen any complaints about temps, and haven't had any problems myself. It's a solid unit.

Could you link any of the complaints you've found?

    QFT.

If any, the thing they can complain is the design, touchpad, speaker. However, heat? I am running BF:BC2 all set to high for 2 hours, not even hot! I don't even apply any thermal paste yet, except for stock. Really, if your only worries is only at the heat, unless you are playing/using your pc under direct sunlight for hours (no electronic can handle this, maybe exception for toughbook), you'll be very happy.

Anyone have an issue with watching YouTube videos or any videos in general I guess when running only on battery power? I can't seem to watch a video for more than a couple of seconds on battery power without the screen freezing, then popping back up again with a message saying the display driver has stopped responding, but has recovered successfully. This only happens when on battery power so I'm thinking this is a power issue. I've reinstalled the latest Ati 5870 drivers but it still comes up when on battery power. Could it be a faulty video card?

I totally agree. I have dealt with several NP8760-W870CU units and the cooling is very good. The onboard speaker volume and battery life have been the 2 negatives for some.

    The Sager NP8760 / Clevo W870CU will now have 1 USB 3.0 Port... :)

I'm trying to find a way to do a speaker swap. You figure that would be one of the easier things to do.

Is this official ? I dont see it mentioned on Sager's specs sheet or Clevo's.
