    Impressive.

When I was in the hospital, the only wireless signal was at the end of the 2nd floor hallway. So I would take my notebook down there to dl tv and I could only get about 35 min out of it before it hit 10%.

Try an put it on power saving mode. It locks the clocks and voltages at minimum for the CPU. Also don't forget to dim the display.

Looking at this laptop. How is the screen quality? I also read that it is somewhat louder than other laptops in idle and load.

Also how are the keys on the keyboard?

You might want to start with reading through this thread.

How loud it is depends on what hardware it comes with. It can be a little louder than average, but the cooling is also better than average.

I have been comparing prices of the 8760 for the last week and it seems Notebookguru.de & Deviltech.de have the GTX480m as an option for their W870, so it looks like we will certainly see the 470. (I say we because I have now ordered one and sent the wire transfer to the US today. Yay!!)

Links to their configurators below. (If I am breaking forum rules with this, please remove)

Have you completely confirmed, that they aren't just sending out W88s to those who order the 480M, W87s to those who want the 5870?

    Has Clevo released a W870CU BIOS w/ 4xxM support?

The most recent BIOS that I have installed on my machine supports the 460m.

Ya, the w870cu sells with a 460m in it now. Supporting the 480m is a whole different thing.

Hello evrybody! I have a problem with the wifi. It was running smoothly for about one month but after a format to the laptop it just stopped working. I downloaded the drivers that this thread provides but it didn't solve the problem. Right now I use a ethernet but I need the wifi too. In the device manager it shows a network controller but can't get it to work even when I try manually to install the drivers.Any solution?

After a trip to Sager for repairs, my 8760 returned home with a new mobo and a new or updated system BIOS identified as "1.01.15S LS2." Is this different from the 1.00.15S available for download from Sager or the 1.00.15 from Clevo? Does anyone know what the "LS2" appended designation represents. Like the 1.00.16 version of the 8690, this one wants WEI re-run after each boot. This thing feels different, more sluggish maybe, in ways I have not yet been able to put my finger on. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know exactly. Had a repeat of the earlier BSOD while running a CPU benchmark (CoresMark), but with a relatively mild overclock, nothing like the stress of the earlier incident. Was really just seeing what it looked like. The benchmark program hung for a few seconds, then crashed and the 8760 died. They replaced the motherboard again, but gave no explanation of what broke. It has made me a little skittish, and I've been very gentle with it since it got home. May have to swap the 920XM and other high performance stuff over to the Alienware. As much as I love the 8760, it may just not be up to the stress of overclocking. Or maybe I just got a bad apple.

Hopefully that board was just bad. I can understand you being weary now, I'm always like that with my... everything. :p

This is why I undervolted the GPU as much as I could and ordered a low power SSD. I have a 10-port, powered USB hub running all my gadgets, and my audio interface is externally powered as well. I wanted to make sure there's as little extra power draw as possible without sacrificing performance. Right now I just have my CPU set to 58w/48a and every multi bumped up one level. Even when my 180w adapters get here, I doubt I'll go much above that.

It's really too bad there isn't voltage control to these things as well. The x9000 in my HDX runs @3.2 below stock voltage, and it would go up to 2.4 at the lowest possible voltage setting.

Have to say that Sager has stood behind the 8760 completely and with no hassle whatsoever in the face of two mobo failures, and turnaround time has been as fast as anyone could reasonably expect. GenTech (my reseller) has been there at every step to facilitate communications. The warranty service has exceeded all expectations, and I recommend both organizations without reservation. If Clevo could just strengthen whatever keeps failing on the mobo, it would be almost perfect.

I've been reading on the 5870 powerplay issue with the w870cu. Has Celvo restored this feature?

If not, what would I lose by reverting to an older vbios that supports powerplay? My understanding is that the old vbios did not work with newer catalysts.

Hello to all. One quick question. I want to buy an external hard drive and I am thinkng of buying one with usb 3.0 I have the older w870cu wich dowsn't have one, only usb 2.0 Is it possible to add a usb 3.0 through the pci card that the laptop has? I ask because the pci card that handles usb 3.0 needs a specific amount of bandwith and I don't know if the pci card of the laptop can handle it.

PowerPlay still does not work with the 5870 in the NP8760/W870CU. It's also true that the older vbios (the one that preceded TS35951.018) was/is not compatible with the Catalyst Mobility driver reference packages. I don't remember what the last driver set that worked with the older vbios was (9.12 maybe?).

Over the past few months I have been trying to choose a laptop. Early last week I chose the Np8760-S1. I put a matching 500gig 7200rpm drives in that will be striped. So after I have paid my 2k+, I start searching for problems with the unit. From what I have found is the largest problem is that I bought it from Sager from what I have read. Is it true that they suck at costumer service? Did I just blow it? Should I take them up on the 30 day money back if I don't like the machine and turn the money around and by it from xotic?

    I feel a bit worried.

Update: I asked this question in the parent forum, disregard please.

USB is backward compatible. You can plug a 3.0 external drive into a 2.0 port (w870cu) and it will just run at 2.0 speeds.

Ah, the D470V, the 17 inch variant of my old notebook, except dressed in Voodoo regalia. It's always nice to see a legacy model alive and kicking.

Thanks. I am using AMD Clock Tool shortcuts to manage sound and temps for now.

LOL at Voodoo. For all their bluster (I am too lazy to dig up the interview I did with their CEO) they made almost no impact on the PC market. But at least they picked a solid ODM.

W870CU/W871CU is back on Clevo's site :) With 470M as an option. I guess we'll soon see it with Sager too.

Those planning on the Sager NP8760-S1, grab it now. It will be gone soon with the launch of the 'new' W870CU. Anybody know if the chasis is new or same as the previous one ?

Maybe the 470m will run quiet!

I like the performance of the 5870 but hate the noise.

Also, would it kill Clevo to start using metal? These things cost as much as AW rigs and look about 25% as good IMO.

I agree that more use of metal would be cool. I happen to disagree with you upon the looks of the AW machines. One of the big reasons I did not buy one of those is that it was to flashy for me. I like the subtle look of the W870CU. It could be that I am not under 45 anymore :)

    @ Ntensity

1st, the 5870 is better then the 460m, The next step in Nvida GPU would be the 480m, its a monster but the 5780 is fine and 50w less.

I would go with the SSD + 500gb over raid 0

xotic pc has the SAGER NP8760-S1 listed @ $1,812.00, the thing I dont get, the S1 has dual 500gb HDD's but xotic list only one 500gb HD.

The great thing about Sager, you can upgrade very easy in the future. This is the configuration I'm getting. Should be ordering on the 1st.
(Im a student and Military paying with cash so I should be able to save a few $)

Has anyone here replaced the power brick with something a little less... brick-like?

I've been looking around, and I found this slim 120w adapter Amazon.com: Kensington Lightweight, Slim line 120 Watt DC Notebook Power Adapter for PC Laptops- 33196: Electronics but I can't seem to find a chart of the 'smart-tips' with mm sizes to check if they'll fit (I believe the W870CU uses a very generic 5.5x2.5mm barrel plug).

Has anyone replaced their brick with a lighter one? I'd love to have the stock one permanently wired up at my desk and a light one in my bag.

Keep in mind this is just a DC-DC adapter, it does not work on an AC outlet. You plug it in to a DC outlet in your car.

Otherwise it should work just fine for normal use.

    Here is the spec sheet:

Speaking of power supplies Mine is LiteOn PA-1131-07
with 19v = 6.3A which I believe is a 90watt adapter, the weird thing is my old MSI GT627 had a similar power supply I thought the W870CU used a 120watt adapter can some one with the W870CU tell me there power supply specs?

    Mark

    Power = Voltage * Current

    19 Volts * 6.3 Amps = 119.7 Watts

So you have a 120 watt supply

You have the same model that came with my machine. I leave my Liteon in my pack and my 160W for use at home.

Then the specs on the MSI are wrong ,the adapter brick for the W870CU
is bigger while the MSI one is a little smaller and slimmer
I have the MSI adapter at work.

Dumb question. I have been looking over the manual of the Np8760, I am unable to find the lan jack on it. Where is it located?

Ah yeah, I linked the wrong one - here is the AC version for home use: Amazon.com: Kensington 120-Watt Ultraportable Wall Notebook PC Power Adapter (K33336US): Electronics

Its the plugs I'm worried about though - although they have a massive range on their site Kensington - Mobile Power Solutions they don't mention dimensions. The only way to see if any of the tips fit would be to know if the Clevo adapter fits one of the other models listed. So, has anyone randomly plugged their clevo supply into another laptop and had it work?

(I'm very eager to lose the 1kg-2kg added to my bag by this brick).

I think the M17x looks good and it has been a long time since I saw 45. :D

I also think Clevo could start offering a better keyboard (backlit would be nice) because the current layout is poor. A better screen, again like the Alienware would also be good. By all means make you pay for them but at least make them an option. I am in the market for a new computer and the lack of those items is a negative point. By no means are they a deal breaker but when I finally sit down to make the final decision those points will be taken into account.

Does anyone know if your unlocked BIOS that allow for turning off HT etc on the w870cu would be compatible with the w880cu?
I'm worried about the gtx480m not being supported in the w870cu BIOS...
