    Yes I know that usb 3.0 devices are usb 2 compatible. What I am asking if it is possible to have a usb 3.0 port in the laptop through and external card so that I will have the high speed of usb 3.

    The Sager uses a 2.5 x 5.5 mm plug size which is pretty common. The manual calls out N sizes, and I can't remember where I at one time found a guide to what those sizes are. This kit will have the right size, not sure if it will have the right program voltage.

    The Express card uses the PCI-e V2 configuration, so you will see the benefit of the about half the maximum possible speed of USB 3, using an Express card USB3 converter card. PCIe as implemented in the Intel HM55 IBEX transfers at 2.5 GT/s

    Express card max is 5.0 Gb/s limited by Intel IBEX to less than 2.5GB/s
    USB 3 max is 4.8Gb/s
    USB 2 max 480Mb/s

    Hi Guys,

    I just received my 8760 this week, and I'm loving the speed, gaming performance, and I really love the aesthetics.

    Couple of small issues though, I have a stuck pixel, but won't be returning the machine to the states, as I live in the UK and can't afford another $200 shipping charge. The pixel is on the far left of the screen though, so it's no big deal. I've tried the software methods to try to unstick, but no joy so far. Can anyone confirm if they have had any success with these? I plan to try the pixel massage or pressure techniques soon if I can't find a software solution.

    Another thing that is bugging me is the volume level. I can accept lack of sound quality, but can't understand why the volume is so low, even when using headphones. I've tried Rancid's suggestion in post 1523 of this thread, but no joy, the levels were already set to 100%.

    I normally use headphones for sound anyway, so the speakers dont really bother me. What I would like to know is if I buy a Creative XFI card or similiar, will the volume level be higher than it is from the onboard headphone socket?

    For the sound I suggest you go to Realtek HD Audio Manager
    Under Speaker Configuration and drop down menu enable 5.1 Speaker.
    And under sound Effects tab play with the equalizer settings also you can create your settings next to the reset button there's a button called
    Change to Graphic IQ, If you don't see the button make sure to install the latest Realtek HD drivers to get the button, I had to do this.
    The music sounds better now that the built in subwoofer is working.

    Thanks Mark, I'm downloading the new 5.1 audio driver from Sager's website now. Wow, getting 22-30kb per second. Did you download the official Sager driver, or direct from Realtek?

    Thanks so much for that mate, got the Realtek driver, and volume and sound quality are at a much more acceptable level. Seems strange that Sager would ship such a great laptop with such poorly optimised sound.

    Anyway, thanks again, +rep. Now back to my games :D

    Realtek

    Try the Realtek drivers directly.
    Realtek usually updates there drivers monthly basis.

    The Sager NP8760 / Clevo W870CU was released October 2009. A year later now so how is it going for you owners? I think this is still one of the best values out there!!.. :)

    Overall I am pretty happy with my laptop. I have had it for six months now. It is plenty fast, pretty solid machine. There are a few things I would like to see changed, but they are mostly minor.

    Let me run down what I like:

    Excellent screen

    Very good cooling, you don’t have to use a cooler (even though I do)
    Professional looks, not flashy

    My set up is very fast to me, I am never feeling like I need a more powerful CPU or GPU

    Easy to work on and upgrade

    Things I would like see changed:

    Sound system needs major help. If Clevo would invest in sound like MSI this thing would be perfect.

    Would like to see the speaker grills changed to something better, these things are really bad at attracting and holding dust. They look nice, but the fineness of the grill make it a dust magnet.

    Flash card reader, My Asus has the type that allows the card to sit flush with the case and is spring loaded to insert and remove. I use my reader to back up some of my data so I always have a card in and it sticks out pretty far, I worry about accidently damaging the card or reader.

    I would prefer synaptic type touch pad. The one we have works fine, just like the scroll type of synaptic better.

    Overall the only major negative is the sound system, the other items are pretty minor, I can live with stuff.

    If I were to buy a machine today would I choose the same one? I would have to say yes at this point.

    So does the Realtek sound drivers make the sound coming out of the headphones a lot better or just marginally?

    I have talked to the staff from xotic about the performance of GTX 460, he told me that there is a new driver for the 460 which make it outpace the ATI 5870. Since I am going to get NP 8760, I am still in between GTX 460 and 5870 now. I have heard that 5870 runs way better than the GTX 460 but there is a problem on the 5870. If someone has the GTX 460 with the updated driver, do you mind telling me the differences that you might notice from the new driver?

    It probably doubles the volume level, the difference from the official sager drivers on the driver cd and the Realtek website is massive.

    To Equilibrium 1736, don't use the Sager drivers, they actually remove the HD Audio Manager from the Control Panel, and do not do anything for performance. The latest Realtek driver seems to activate the sub-woofer and the difference is amazing. Although the volume is increased on the speakers as well, the sound quality is still really poor.

    I plan on using external but my main concern was poor audio with headphones, but it seems like with the website drivers that shouldn't be a problem according to you.

    Eight gigs is a good choice if you're doing a lot of photoshop and CAD work. As far as the CPU goes, the 840 is faster and has more L3 cache. If you're not planning on upgrade to an extreme version later, I would say get the 840.

    Realtek

    I can't link all the way in, but once you get to the download options, I assume your choosing the right one for your operating system

    Thanks for the reply. Yes that's the folder that I used. This is the driver that I clicked on:

    "Vista, Windows7 Driver (32/64bits) Driver only (Executable file)"

    Is this the correct one? Which one should I be using? It keeps telling me that it's not compatible for my OS... :confused:

    If you are using Vista or Win 7 that's the one. The other thing you could try is to download the driver only (Zipfile) file, Unzip the file somewhere (typically download folder) Then you could go to Control panel ->device manager -> Sound, Video, and game controllers -> Realtek High Definition Audio device -> Driver Tab -> Update Driver. When the next windows comes up select browse my computer and point it to the folder with the driver files are. Try this method and see if it works

    You can upgrade later, but the price you'll will be much greater than the difference you pay to upgrade it now and you'll lose your warrenty. Some people buy the cheapest CPU they can and then pay only $500 or so for a ES extreme CPU off eBay, instead of the $1200 they actually cost. If you think you'll want a quad core, just buy the 840QM now.

    I had researched this further and had two different posts, the other post got edited, this one did not, I have since edited the post in this thread.

    Intel uses PCIe version 2 but not at full speed. The HM55 IBEX is limited to 2.5GT/s so the actual speed will be less than this for the express cards.

    hi all!

    getting ready to buy a NP8760 bare-bone system (i think) and haven't been able to fine detailed RAM specs (i have the manuals from this thread). i know it's DDR3 204 pin 1066/1333 MHz. what i don't know about is the timings.

    wondering if this is OK...

    ( link)

    Super Talent DDR3-1333 SODIMM 4GB Micron Chip Notebook Memory (x2)

    * Mfr Part Number: W1333SB4GM
    * Type: DDR3 SODIMM
    * Capacity: 4 GB
    * Speed: PC10600 1333MHz
    * Pins: 204pin
    * ECC: No
    * Registered: No
    * Chip: Micron

    any opinions on pros/cons of buying a bare-bone system would be appreciated too. i have no problem slapping it together, but the real reason for this is that i save just over $100

    RAM timings have very little effect on performance if any nowadays.

    thanks for that!

    thanks for the info. it's really not performance i'm concerned with though, just compatibility - in other words, will it work? i think the consensus so far is a probable 'yes'

    Indeed it is very little.

    If I recall correctly, my HyperX memories give a performance boost between 2% and 5% over stock ones. 5% for a more memory intensive applications, 2% for other applications, like games.

    So after new orders are fulfilled, then I should be able to buy one from you perhaps? :D Also any idea what the price of the card would be... you don't have to say exactly what it is, just that I am trying to compare the price to the 5870.

    Thanks
