All I can say right now is that it WILL cost more than the 5870. Thanks... ;)

Has anyone else had a problem with the battery pack not making contact and if so how have they fixed the problem?

My battery pack has a very slight bulge that is forcing the contacts from the battery away from the laptop and causing a disconnect. When I look at the battery when it is fitted I can see the lip of the battery pack is slightly raised above the laptop. When I remove the battery and inspect it there is a very slight bulge in it.

Initially, I would ocassionally get the message 'no battery detected' but now I get it almost constantly. I can fix the problem by pressing on the edge of the battery pack from underneathh the computer. I also notice that the four feet on the bottom of the laptop are no longer flat. The LH foot closest to me is raised a little bit off the table.

What concerns me here is that this is the second battery pack that has done this. So has anyone else had this sort of problem?

I had originally posted this elsewhere but thought I would bring the question to the owners lounge.

This is alarming. I have also a bulged battery that i'm planning to get replaced with RJTech but I'm concerned that the replacement batt I'll get will experience this again? My laptop is the w860cu. What's wrong with our systems? I have several 2-3 years old laptops and they never experienced this issue

Having a 5870, you should ignore the 470M. Save your money for the Mobility 6870.

    Only time will tell.

I definitely would not buy a 470M, until that question is answered.

Yes it is too early to tell is right. If it goes like last year at CES in releasing the new AMD Mobility card, it may very well be March 2011 before we really see these shipping in any laptop. Just my opinion... :)

The 470M is supported in this model, no guarantee that the 6870M will be.

I think I'm going to end up just waiting for the 6870's to come out, then buy a bare w88 with one in it and swap everything over. Everything, including my adapters are compatible, and my girlfriend won't be able to tell the difference either. ;)

This is the second battery that I have had that has bulged in less than 12 months and this one is far worse than the first and I don't do anything that would suggest I abuse the battery. This is the first computer I have had that has had this type of problem and I have been using laptops exclusively for over 10 years. I am waiting for a reply from the company I bought it off but to be honest it has put me off this model.

It is all confirmed now that the nVidia 470M GTX will be $425.00 more than the ATi Mobility HD 5870 and $395.00 more than the 460M for system orders for the Sager NP8760 / Clevo W870CU and the W860CU - NP8690 . It will be ready to order tonight or tomorrow. No shipments till late this month. At this time there is no benchmarks for it that we have, sorry.... :)

Thanks, Babyhemi. At those prices, sounds like nVidia has decided to just surrender the performance notebook market to ATI/AMD.

    Horrible news.

Reminds me of the 9800M GTX days. Either way, it looks like Nvidia wants to force us to go the ATI route.
Bare in mind that the 470M is a GTX 460 core, so I doubt that the actual manufacturing price is far more expensive than of a GTX 460.

I too never abused the battery. In fact, I seldom use this laptop in battery mode. I usually use it on AC power with the battery just sitting in its battery dock.

    Anyone experiences this same problem?

It's uncanny, like Nvidia believes the market hasn't changed since 2005.

    There's two factors:

    - Mobility 5870 has taken over the high-end mobile market.
    - Mobility 6870 is imminent, and the performance is projected as spectacular.

Either one of these, by itself, should tell Nvidia that their pricing on all upcoming products should be very competitive. But both of the factors, when weighted together? That makes those responsible at Nvidia look borderline insane, to think this is sound business.

It's like Nvidia has already waived the white flag on the mobile market.

Let's also add in the decision to ship the GT 445M with 3GB of RAM. This is pure madness coming out of the green camp.

The AMD 6850 is being sold for $199 and less. This shows that the company is is the exact position it faced when transitioning the 5770 to the mobile market, meaning that the Mobility 6870 will be at or below $400, and will absolutely clean up the high end market share.

I hate to say it, because we need the competition, but Nvidia is really in trouble, on the desktop and mobile sides. This next year will be really rough for them.

Yep happened to me too. Replacement battery has been good for 3-4 months now, hopefully it stays that way. I also pretty much never use the battery -- only when I suspend it and carry it to work and back, other than that it's plugged in.

Actually based on performance per watt comparisons, I am not inclined to say "spectacular". From what I have seen in the charts, I am pretty sure that the minimum performance increase is going to be 10% and the maximum is going to be 20% (of course, IF they keep the same 65W TDP for the core).

Now look at the situation this way:
    - we don't know how good the 470M is. it may be the same as the 480M or a bit better or a bit less, so we are looking at a 5-15% performance increase over the M5870.
    - on the other hand, Mobility cards usually take a loooong time from the moment when they are announced to the moment they start shipping. Unlike Nvidia, which starts shipping notebooks with its cards a few weeks after the cards are announced at most. As the M6870 is not yet announced, it may take at least 2 months until we see it on the market, although I think the most realistic scenario is 3-4 months from now.

Thus, Nvidia has a 3-4 month windows in which it can milk the high-end market for notebook video cards and that's what they are doing.

It's not even sure that the max increase for the M6870 will be 20%
if I compare the 5770 to the 6850 (anandtech, crysis warhead, 1680*1050, same test machine)
AMD?s Radeon HD 6870 & 6850: Renewing Competition in the Mid-Range Market - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

    I see 30.5 fps for the 5770 and 43 fps for the 6850 a 41% increase
We could expect something between 20% and 41% for the M6870 over the M5870 (my guess is below 30%)

Wrong. First of all I am talking about overall performance and second, the 6850 has a noticeable higher TDP than the 5770 (127/108), thus directly comparing their performance will lead to misleading conclusions.

I would at this point see if you can find a dedicated forum for split second and see what they may be able to offer over their. It's highly likely that is not a problem with you hardware but some in game settings.

ive played split second on my 8690 and the nvidia 280m on fhd and high and i get really fast framrates. i could play it on very high but i just like the feeling of speed with the high settings.
never experienced any lag with this game, i play with vsyn off, maybe you should try that first.
if that doesnt solve the problem, and assumong that your o/s is clean (no conflicts, malware etc), im leaning more towards a driver issue.

I thought about TDP too that's why I choose the 6850 over the 6870 you will notice that the under load power draw of the system with 6850 is quite close to the one with a 5770
    294W vs 280W a 14W difference
XFX HD 6850 and Radeon HD 6870 have arrived
    confirmed here
    Radeon HD 6850 & 6870 review
    121W - 108W = 13W difference or 13%

taking that into account regarding the results
41% improvement minus 13% gives 28% (that's why my guess was below 30%)
there are lots of assumption here I know

what do you mean by overall performance I looked at other tests and found same range results?

Congratulations, it looks like Nvidia have just priced themselves out of a purchase. Even if the GTX 470M was magically 30% faster than the ATI 5870, it wouldn't be worth it. I will wait for ATI's offerings now

Windows XP Pro will only work on this one if you can find suitable drivers for it. For example XP Pro will not even find your hard drive unless you do so... :)

Same here. I was excited to possibly get a hold of a GTX 470m, thinking it would only be moderately higher priced over the 460m. Leave it to Nvidia to kill my excitement.

@Kevin_Jack2.0 - tried playing in lower details it's almost all the same, even in medium settings.

@othonda - yep thx im gonna look forward for SDdrive forum to c what they say. i have the vsync off. tried as i said medium settings it's kinda laggy. can't control a-lot of the v-settings..

@trvelbug - i have the vsync off :( didn't helped. thats the first thing i switched off, no result dough.. may be lit less lag. I'm thinking too of reinstalling the os or even using older drivers to c what's happening. Dunno might be the game release, almost no chance dough..

i'm gonna keep you in touch :)
    p.s.
Another thing i'm experiencing is that, when i try to play anygame on battery my notebook is shutting down by itself in couple minutes, lets say 5. That likely since i bought it. Since then i changed couple OS's. With each one it was the same. When it's plugged in - it's all good.

I guess it will be good, to now eliminate the possibility that it's a driver issue.

Install an older Catalyst driver, to see if the results are the same. Like 10.9, 10.8, or 10.7.

    getting a 8690-S1 with GTX 470m...

any advice on extending battery life as far as possible, i would be fine with 1 hour 15 minutes somehow... or no? Is there a better battery for 8690 or is there only stock?

Sorry at this time there is only one battery option. The 8690 and 8760 both have the 3800mAh, 42.18Wh only... :)

Maybe a battery problem. I have the M570TU and have the same problem when running a very resource intensive game (let's say crysis). And yes I have it since I bought it... :(

    To all seniors in sagers.

Would Sager's Internal 802.11 B+G+N Wireless LAN Module give stable wireless connection? Or should I upgrade it to Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 - 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module?
