Did it on my M1530 and it worked out great, still going 2 years later.

But it is a hit or miss.. hopefully it's a good one with my W860CU

Ah, apologies, didn't mean to rain on your parade. I hope it works out for you too.

I've been paranoid about solder joints ever since the Nvidia BGA fiasco on their 7000/8000 cards. My poor 7950GTX didn't last long (died just out of warranty), hence my cooling mods on the W860cu.

Oh don't apologize! I didn't even see it that way. You cooling mod is insane, I must give you that. But I just agree it's a hit or miss.. it can definitely go either way

Hi, yep thanks, did that and tried it for a number (10) of restarts & shutdowns but the problem persists.

Huh, well, check that off the list then. Have you tested your RAM? Make a bootable cd/usb key with Memtest86 and run it for a bit.

*any recommendations for a 64-bit system? will the built-in Windows one be enough?

Oh yeah, I always forget about that after using Memtest forever. The Win7 RAM test should do the trick too.

Win 7 RAM test didn't detect any problems.

Replaced the hard disk and there is slight improvement with boot issue: boots into Windows with less attempts.

Lol, what I see in your video mangbhoy is the same what happends if I try to boot from my battery.
have you tried booting it without the battery installed? My battery is inflated a little bit and lasts only 3 minutes when I pull out the ac cable.
Even if it still has18wh left in it.

About your gpu: "Addt'l question: was using HWMonitor (64-bit) and my ATI MR 5870 is now read as ATI FirePro M7820 - I'm sure this is related to the ATI/AMD merger; but would this be a potential cause of my system crashing?"

That is just the driver, I had the same on my 5870m and shoudnt cause any issue.

Hi Chaosstorm, thanks for the suggestion; I've already tried that but it's a no-go. I've now sent my laptop to the shop - God forgive my sin, I've done my best.

You can get a pretty cheap amd 6970m here on the forum, I got one for 140 euro and its alot faster then your 5870m.
Its also possible to get amd 7970m but its expensive and you need the right version for this notebook.

    Merry Christmas to all!

Well, just got the lappy out of the shop and I had it verified that it was the video card that is busted combined with the funky battery situation.

Would like to get more info on "baking" the video card and try to get a few more months (maybe more) out of it.

    Also, anyone selling a 6970m?

Go to the market here, there are sometimes 6970m for sale.
And always bid a little lower price then the seller asks :p

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/computer-components/696409-fs-amd-6970m-graphics-card.html
Already found one, he asks 180 dollar and thats a good price for that card. But you will have to modify your heatsink by removing a small piece of copper heatsink.
Search this forum for it :p

    Cheers mate!

Hopefully there should be a guide somewhere on how to adjust the heatsink :)

I still want to try "baking" the video card and see if that would work :)

Had a close call this morning.

My W860CU (purchased May 2010) wouldn't get past the bios startup screen. Turns out my SSD crapped out on me.

Annoyed but relieved at the same time, could've been a lot worse.

Do you guys think it's still worth it to try and upgrade w860cu?

I bought mine in July 2010 and was extremelly happy with it since then. But it was just a mid range model i7 740qm, 5870m, 4gb ram. So understandably it starts to struggle in games. I was thinking whether I should upgrade it to 920xm, 6990m and 8gb ram. Or just sell it and buy a new thing. If I hold on to it, will there be any chance of selling it (for any money ) in a year and a bit.

In a year it'll almost more impossible to sell it. I would recommend buying a new machine. There's a limit until one cannot upgrade his laptop no more

You could get the AMD 6970m if you want better gaming peformance, I did the same. altho I already had the i7 920xm and I dont know if your i7 Q740 will be a bottleneck. Or else you can try to sell it, but since you got the "mid range" spec im not sure if its worth enough compared to just a GPU upgrade.

I bought this one from ebay last week a 180w adapter at 19V and 9.5A,
Its supposed to be new and i think it should work in the clevo, but i havent recieved it yet so cant tell if it works for sure.
And its only 27.5 euro. Originally its ment for "Alienware Area-51 m 9750 m9750"

Alright guys, I apologise for copying this from another post i made, but i think this is one of the highest 3DM11 Scores achieved on the W860cu, and the 7970m or 680 is easily possible to install in it.
Im proud to give you all the Highest 3DMARK 11 pScore achieved with a 720qm CPU, and most likely the highest on a W860cu..

AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-720QM Processor ,EUROCOM W860CU Cougar score: P6134 3DMarks

    This was done @
    1.090v 1050Mhz core, 1200Mhz mem. @ 67c.

Once i upgrade to the 920xm i will shoot for the highest 3DMARK 11 score on a First gen i7 CPU.

    *Edit, I achieved 1100Mhz today on 1.1v Scoring 6200 Marks.. @ 69c.
I will be updating when i have the link to my result later.

Wow 6200 on just a 720QM thats really high...

My 6970m+920xm didnt went higher as 3738 With the amd at 830/1150mhz
I had it overclocked but it would crash because im on the 120w power supply.
When i get my 180w ill benchmark again. I think i can do 4k

    @ aspawn
I have seen a battery for 65 euro on aliexpress with free shipping

Yay, I got my alienware Area-51/ m9750 180w adapter and it works great. and that for only 27 euro.

    Hi
Glad to be here, have the old machine too and tried,as newbie to flash the bios,(the flashing of Ec 1.011 and Bios 1.018 was no problem)the modded one, though i don´t seem to go through cause I do not know exactly the procedure how and wich file where they belong and so on,so i´d be thankful if someone could help taking his time to write it down or just give me a link.Intend to upgrade my 620m to 940xm and 5870m to 7970m as someone already did and also buying a samsung pro 256 Gb SSD and was wondering if the modded bios whould support 1866 Mhz ram as i was planning to go for the corsair vengeance,or/and if the bios modded box supports 16 Gb ram.Have managed to stable GPU (M5870)stock voltages Oc 857/1077Mhz,through Sapphire Trixx and curious to know more about OC gpu, voltages Cpu,Ram overclock and if the moded bios allows those features. As i'm not one who leaves his boat as soon as a ship under horizon comes and taking in consideration I'm old enough,i'll try to stick with this machine and make the life time only one out of it,even if it seems to be a lost battle.
    Thanks in advance.

    Well

Did some testing and found out the catalyst 13.1 mobility runs far better on OC still stable on 875 clock/1095 Mem with scores above 2600,had 2636 total, graphics 2569 in 3DMark11 whereas 13.2 Beta 5 goes stable just around 857/1077 (2519 P)by default Voltages.

    Update(ed)
to latest Saphire Trixx version with stable 930/4500(1125)MHz,2739P and 10008 P in vantage. It seems most of the 860 cu owners have better ones already,or just got something better to do,and i confirm;it is way better going out,in the nature, loving, living, even working than being trapped in the machine. All the best to all of you.

First, Is it possible to use the Micro PCI-E (Originally or the 3G receiver) for a Mpci-e SSD?
    Like this one:?

Also, I am using the latest .14 Bios from Eurocom... Is it possible to use Kizwans Modded bios without it bricking anything?

also, Which EC are you using, and which Bios version?

Flashed the last ones 2 weeks ago;EC 1.0.11, BIOS 1.0.18,since then i´ve upgraded from wind 32 bit to 64 bit and as I tried to flash Kizwan´s modded Bios i got the message it is not 64bit compatible.I did it this way:formated 32fat partition of a toshiba hard Disk and tried in wind comand line dos mode to flash it,though it doesn´t get through,or i do something wrong as I´m not that familiar with Bios flashing and pc generally.Still, flashing the clevo bios succeded flawlessly.Any help/advice whould be apreciated.
    Thanks.

If i was you, i'd just delete all the files and restart.. Use the HP USB format tool, and instll the DOS files with that. Then, download the latest Bios flash tool you can get, or try a different one. Then try to flash again. It sounds to me like your using a outdated Flashing tool.

    Thanks for the feedback
Used Wintobootic in order to FAT32 format the one partition of the external hard drive as it allows me different formating different partition of a Hard drive i have(500 gb 1 NTSC 400 GB,one 78 GB FAT32)After that got the bios files on it and tried directly in Dos mode(comand line through Wind)flashing the Bios Without using a flash tool,(that could be my problem)as it´s nowhere shown a clear step by step using such a flash tool, they mostly say take the flash tool or use the flash tool, without any further information of how to or details and i´d be greatful for some.
    Thanks once again.

1: The only thing you need is to download that flash tool.
2: Make a bootable USB stick.
3: unzip the folder with the files and put it on the root.
4: boot from that usb stick.
    5: write update.bat
6: Hurray we did it and now you either have a brick or a modded bios :p

I'm one of the early adopters and my W860cu is still going strong after 3+ years. But lately I've been thinking of giving it a new lease on life by doing some upgrades.

My current setup is in my sig..

And this is what I want to get to:

    • i7-820QM
    • GTX280m
    • 8gig DDR3-1333
    • 256gig Samsung Pro SSD
    • Windows 8 64-bit

First off, what do you guys think? Will that give me a decent performance increase? (So far I have no problem at all playing games on high settings. Even new ones. So I don't feel like upgrading the graphics card. I would also have alot off difficulty selling it second hand.)

But more importantly, has anyone done the Windows 8 upgrade/fresh install? And did you run into any difficulties with drivers or even hardware? (According to the update tool, there should be no issue. But I'd rather hear this from someone who's already upgraded.)

I put a 7970m in my w860cu a few days ago and have a problem where it's automatically going into sleep mode while gaming. 20-30mins of bf3 or 5-10mins of assassin's creed 3 will force the issue. 3dmark11 runs just fine (probably because it doesn't last that long). Temps at automatic sleep are ~65°C and steady.

from what I've read, a thermal shutdown would fully turn my computer off. In my case though, it just seems to go through the normal "going to sleep" procedures and then turns off. I can power on and resume from sleep immediately afterwards. Has anybody else had automatic sleep issues with their w860cu?

-At first, I thought thermal issue with other gpu board components, but I rechecked the pads and it seems they are in good contact. I can see the imprint left on them by each chip. Put it back together and it's still sleeping on me. Temps at sleep are the same ~66°C.
-Thought it could be power, but measured draw is only ~160 at load with a kill-a-watt meter so my 180w supply should be plenty.
    -reinstalled graphics drivers, still sleeping.

My gut still thinks it could be thermal related since it only happens while gaming, but i'd like to know if anyone else has had thermal sleep-downs before since it seems a bit strange.

Have you tried to undervolt the card? If you run it at 1v combined with stable clocks. You can use ati tools for that. It could be your motherboard that cant handle so much power? Havent seen that issue with my overclocked i7 920xm +6970m tho.

My computer's "sleeping" habits turned out to be a gpu thermal issue as I suspected. I replaced the thermal pads with some fujipoly 11w/mk ones and all is well now. For future reference, if 7970m secondary board components (such as memory) are hitting critical temps in the w860cu while the core temp is OK, it can manifest itself as a normal sleep-mode power-down in the middle of your game instead of a full-stop instant shutdown.

Nice, I would highly recommend the upgrade. The 7970m should keep the w860cu relevant for at least another year or two (i'm still amazed at how well it's kept up). Most games are still bottlenecked by the gpu so our first gen i7's should be plenty for quite some time.

    Ebay and the members market.

Most problems are related to the cards in machines that support switchable graphics.

    Hi guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my gtx260m but I don't have much money to spend.
Would 5870m be a good choice?? I was looking at ebay but I only find 5870's from dell/alienware, will they work in my w860cu ?

    Thanks in advance! :)

The 5870m would be a nice ugprade over the 260, but I'd actually recommend the 6970m. Have seen a few of those go for sub-$200 which is only $20-30 above what 5870's are going for on ebay. It would probably be the best bang for your buck since the performance gap between 5870 and 6970 is quite significant. You will have to dremel the heatsink a little bit though, but I'm sure there's a guide on the forums somewhere since many have that card in their w860cu's
