    Hi all,

I;m trying to figure out how to clock my CPU but I can only find old threads about it. Can anyone provide a definite answer or PM me the software needed and/or BIOS unlock I need in order to overlock my CPU. I'm trying to bring my 820QM up to 2.0~2.1 GHZ on all cores. Possibly even 2.3 if it's stable

Long story short, you didnt searched properly. You cant overclock an 720/820 or anything lower then that. Your only option to overclock is to get a I7 920xm or an 940xm. And use throttlestop or intel XTU to overclock.

Hey guys, I am trying to update my bios (Sager NP8690), but the one on the Sager website is an ISO file, and I do not have any blank discs. Does anyone know how I can boot the bios iso file from a USB?

Just a quick question, anyone here with a Sager NP8690, that has Bioshock Infinite, also encountering crashing to desktop every five or so minutes? I have tried the Steam and 2K forums and was wondering if anyone here has had the same issue and figured out how to fix it...

Bios hock is a pig of a game. The first thing to do in such situations is check your temperatures.

    Hey trvelbug,

Thanks for responding. I have checked my temperatures while playing and the GPU averages 56 degrees Celsius. You think that is too hot? Also, there are guys with gtx 660s having frequent crashes, but do you think the crashes are the fault of my humble 280m?

Sounds like a faulty GPU tbh.. You can try opening the back and screwing the GPU screws slightly tighter (SLIGHTLY, dont want to dmg anything), this fixed it for me.

But loads of other things can be faulty here... drivers, Bioshock update? But otherwise your temp is really really cool, no prob there

56 Celsius while you game? On the contrary that seems too low. What's your ambient temperature?
When I had my 8690 and 285m my gaming temps were usually in the 70-85 range. When I play Bioshock in the my present system it's in the mid 80s. My ambient temps are 24-26 Celsius
Could you graph your temps? I suspect your gpu is throttling heavily.
Edit :are you experiencing other issues with other games or programs?

What's the better GPU that the W860cu can hold? I have one with a 5870M on it since October 2010. Never did any bios upgrade or so. I've been reading threads and I'm quite confused about bios, vbios, different card versions. I'm just looking around, im not sure yet that I'll buy a new GPU. What do I need to do?

I want to sell my W86CU, and I am in India. Yyyup. Just bear with me. Here are the specs:
    Intel i5 (560M, 2.66GHz, 3MB Cache)
    NVidia GeForce GTX 460M 1.5GB
IC Diamond cooling unit on CPU and GPU

    8GB DDR3 RAM (2DIMMS)
    500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard disk
    Win 7 Home Premium 64bit

    15.6" Full HD Display (Resolution 1900 x 1020)
    BluRay DVD reader, DVDRW
    Fingerprint scanner
    Webcam HD 720p/mic

Also other shebang of ports (HDMI, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, Intel 6300AGN wifi, Bluetooth etc). Original DVDs available. And its original laptop carrying bag. (It's important!)

I bought it in 2010, used it for a month and then lost my job. (Had lofty goal of doing some GPU computing.) So, it's been sitting here, without much use. (Just like my brain.) From the box itself, the left click never worked. So, as I wanted to sell it, I thought I'd repair it. Weeeelll, that kinda worked, only I am left with surplus of 2 screws from within the deep bowels of this monster, also I managed to silence the speakers! Oh, headphones work fine, so no problem with soundcard. And speakers were mighty fine before the repair saga. So apart from all of its above hailworthy specs (just like my brain), left click is stiff-ish and speakers don't work (again, see: my brain). Otherwise, this beauty is-pardon my ornate language-beautiful. Battery life is still pretty much as it should be in the beginning.

Question. Does anyone want it here? Irrespective of yes/no, what price would you be willing to pay? So that I can put up my ad here in India accordingly. Help out a cash-starved fellow owner :eek2: (Do appeals to sentiments really work?)

    Hi Dear Owner,

I found a solution to a problem that has been bugging me for at least 1 year.
The problem is random shut off of laptop, especially when turning on.
This video explains the problem Sager NP8690 power problem randomly turning off - YouTube

1st I thought it was a CMOS battery problem, changed it. Problem still there. Then though it was over-heating, changed thermal paste of CPU and GPU problem still there.
After a lot of days, even weeks of troubleshoot the only components not tested were CPU, GPU and motherboard. But i started to rule them out since i discovered by mistake that if i start my laptop without power cord it actually boots well. Then once in Windows you can plugging it again and all good. Not a pratical solutions but better than random normal boots i was facing.
After i discovered this temporary solution i though the problem came from laptop charger, changed but problem still there.

Today i was thinking about when this happen and i think t was around Windows 8 release last year. I really dont remember if this was happening in win7, can someone confirm the problem happening in win7? Anyway i start to investigate about it and after going around and around and trying lots of solutions i found that if you DISABLE HYPER-THREADING IN BIOS the laptop start behaving normally again. I start to think it might be processor or intel controler driver in windows 8/8.1 bug related to hyper-threading or it might need a BIOS upgrade.

Anyway its still not a 100% solution but i am very happy i found a way to avoid this annoying bug. For reference this is my setup.

    BIOS: from sager website 1.18S
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro X64 (upgraded from windows 8)
    CPU: 820QM
    RAM 16GB
    GPU: NVIDIA GTX280M
    1st HDD: 256GB OCZ Vertex 3
2nd HDD (Caddy): 1TB SSHD Seagate

Really hope i could give some light to some W860CU owners, i start to thinking about getting a new rig, but this one still rocking since 2009 ;)

@Similar to my problem is (not my video) Sager NP8690 - Beep and Crash - YouTube but my computer flashes all 3 keyboard leds.

Simply clean your GPU fan connectors with rubbing alcohol and let dry.

My gpu died this week, the amd 6970m which i upgraded to from a ati 5870m now i regret that upgrade because the 5870m was working perfect but I sold it ;(.
The 6970m had artifacts even when booting just to windows, baked it in the oven at 200c but that didnt help either because the video memory was defect and not the solder.

Im gonna sell the rest of my clevo as parts.
Now im gonna get a 2nd hand P150em with geforce gtx 680m :)

    Hey Guys,

    Anyone still active around here?
So I am looking for a bit of help.
    Basicaly I have a W860CU from 2009 with a 820QM and a GTX260M.
The GTX260M is giving me a lot of problems and recently I was able to buy one 5870M from another user in this forum.

I just put it together yesterday and I have no image! Even no backlight. First times it beep twice, now on boot if I press F1 it goes into windows normally.
I have the latest bios, it should support 5870 without problems right? Can I be missing something?

    Thanks

    Hi everybody,

I’ve got a StyleNote notebook (W860 CU) with GTX 280. It works fine but the two fans (CPU & GPU) make horrible noise. So I’ve searched new fans over internet and I could not found.
Some websites (or ebay sellers) have this fans but, the shipping is incredibly high (100 $ or more for France) or they don’t have the fans anymore in stock.

So my question is : Do you know where can I found this fans (6-31-W860S-200) or do you know is there any equivalent?

Thank you I sorry for my poor English (yes I’m French… ;)

    Hi wronis,

Did you tried to clean the fans and repaste the CPU and GPU with a good thermal compound?
About a place to get W860CU hardware is Europe is hard. I have the same problem.

I had the same, and lubed the fans up with http://jameystegmaier.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/WD-40-Can-200ml-MUP_2013.jpg
Worked for a year, after that i did the same again, but then the gpu died ;).

    Hi,
    Thank you for your advices.

EditioN -> Did you tried to clean the fans and repaste the CPU and GPU with a good thermal compound? -> already done, but that’s not solve the problem...

Chaosstorm -> WD40, i use it for all my DIY ! I will try that and hope the GPU lasts more than 1 year.

    Thanks

    Wronis,

both of your fans will be dead, very soon probably. It happened to me on CPU fan only, it's probably the bearings inside, or something like that, I'm not a techie. After some time, it stopped spinning and the laptop wouldn't turn on. Order new from this site:

6-31-w860s-200 6-31-w860s-102 fan (system takes two this is one [6-31-w860s-200 6-31-w860s-102 fa] - £29.90 : clevoweb, the one stop source for all clevo and clevo brankded product spares and repairs

There are other sources like ebay but I used this one.

None of its official but the 7970M does work. I believe kits are on ebay. You would want to get a higher rated brick too.

Hello! I have been reading like 100 pages now & I can´t find the info here, maybe someone can help me.

    Here is the thing:

I´ve ordered a 60gb Msata SSD to use it in my clevo w860cu.

I then realised that it isn´t Msata, but Mpcie.

Long story short, I´ve ordered a 60gb Mpcie SSD to plug it into my notebook.

Still, not working, I tried to find it with osX installer, windows installer and UBCD.

None of them recognises my SSD drive.

    Any Ideas? Thanks

Your mini PCIe port is likely USB based for a TV card or the like.

Most likely you're trying to plug it into the Mini-Card Connector (3G Module for W860CU) These computer came out before mSATA drives did, unfortunately you wont be able to put one in. Your best bet if wanting to add SSD technology is to get a SSD drive to put in the primary hard drive bay then if you need that storage space move the HDD to the optical bay drive (if you can go without your optical drive). You will need a caddy to mount the HDD in the optical bay.

Right I read that as well, my point was "Most likely you're trying to plug it into the Mini-Card Connector (3G Module for W860CU)"

I do apologize if I made things confusing by using the term "mSATA" instead of " mini pcie ssd" as he did say he got that instead.

Yesterday I got the following message from the fan dealer:

    --
Clevo have come back to us and informed us that the last batch of fans that they were supposed to be sending us are no
    longer available.

Nor do they have any refurbished fans, and they will not have any more.

As an alternative We offer a fan refurbishment service, which is a new fan assembly within your existing fan case.

We normally charge £44+VAT for this, however if you wish to go ahead with this service you can send us your old fan in to us
and we will turn process it in 24 hours for the original price.

We have also contacted the original manufacturer of these fans, however they have a minimum production run of 5000 which is
    not practical.

We look forward to your response in this matter.

Hey guys, I had to reinstall my windows a while ago and the fingerprint sensor never reinstalled properly. It wasn't a big deal because other users aren't really a concern for me, but they are now to a bigger extent, and also the driver recently updated through Windows update, so I wanted to start using it again. I've been trying to figure a way to get it to work and be able to log in via fingerprint again, but have come up short. Any suggestions/advice/etc?

Yeah, I've downloaded them from the sager website and everything, even with Windows saying I already had the most up to date ones. I'm running 7 Ultimate 64 bit, forgot to mention that before. I'm kind of feeling like I'm just SOL here, but any help is very welcome.

I was able to use the fingerprint drivers from the NP9150 on my NP8690. They are far more recent and work with Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. If I remember correctly it included a newer version of the Authentec program as well.

Could someone please tell me the trick to replacing the CMOS battery? Is there a way to get to it from the top? I can see it but I can't figure out how to get it out without pulling the main board.

    Hi,

I have this laptop and was thinking about upgrading my GTX 280M inside and was wondering what GPUs will work in this laptop without the laptop requiring modification?

    Thanks

I have this laptop and it seems the 5870 on it, died. What's the best GPU I can get with minor cooler modifications? Are the 7970 reliable? Would it fit? And the 6970?

The 7970M with hm vbios. I believe it requires a little heatsink modding.
