Also, any faster driver downloads then sagernotebook.com?
The finger print driver doesnt come with the cd, and its taking 43 minutes to download on a 15mb/sec connection.

Eurocom has driver downloads. I'd imagine the drivers for the fingerprint device haven't changed too much since the older models, for example the M860TU.

I had no idea people really used that thing. The only reason I'm going install the drivers is so the little error icon doesn't show up in device manager.

Finally! Welcome aboard :) . The drivers cd should come with all drivers needed to run everything on the laptop (atleast mine did). It's pretty strange how you noted that the palmrest gets pretty warm...you must have sweaty palms because mine doesn't get warm at all. Can't wait to see a full review when you're done. Too bad I don't have the time to do one myself.

When I don't have my mouse with me, I am 90% keyboard dependent in general apps and navigation that do not require the obvious use of a mouse. I have memorized the placement of every key on my keyboard, including the Fn binds. You will find that you can work faster if you use a keyboard rather than a mouse.

^and use hwmonitor PRO as well for monitoring temps...pm sent. you can make graphs of temps, monitor battery voltage/capacity,wear, and dock any temp into an icon that refreshes every second in the toolbar.

    hey guys,

this is my first post and im completely new to the forum. i used to game a bit and would like to get back into it, I am planning on buying a laptop for this purpose. the 8690 seems like it might be the computer for me though i cannot afford it at the moment. i just sold my desktop and am planning on getting a laptop on my birthday at the start of next month. im wondering if i should buy this laptop then as it seems amazing or wait another 3 weeks for 2010 to roll around and see what comes out.

im also wondering about dealers, i am considering ordering from xoticpc as the people there have been extremely helpful but i am wondering if there are any other dealers in canada who also have good reputations so i can maybe save some coin on shipping/handling.

the setup im looking at is the 820 cpu with 4gb of ram and a 250gb, 7200rpm, 16mb cache hd aswell as win7 installed, rest is standard. another of my questions, slightly off topic is concerning the difference between 32bit and 64bit win 7, i have no clue what the difference is and if someone could explain id really appreciate it :D ive been following this thread for about a week and have read most of it, lots of good info, however i still cant decide if i really wanna spring an extra $200 on the upgraded cpu - how much of a performance enhancement do you think i will see?

lastly....i think :p how hard is it to apply cooling compound? i have never done it nor done much other technical stuff in regards to notebooks, or desktops for that matter. it seems like a fair number of people have had issues with there compound and it may be something i need to do. if it is hard or slightly risky how much do you think it would cost to have someone at a local computer store do it for me? i know it will probably be different all over the place but an estimate would be cool.

really appreciate any help or advice you can offer, have a good afternoon!

    shakes

Welcome to the NBR forums. :)

the rule for buying a notebook is to get one when you need it.

if you were to keep on waiting for the next thing o come out, you will be waiting forever since there is always something on the horizon.

there are many great vendors that sell in or ship to Canada.

here is a recent thread on this subject:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=432275

    go for the 64-bit.

32-bit is limited to only utilizing up to ~3.3GB. 64-bit can utilize all the RAM you can put in this notebook.

You would not notice the difference in performance from one i7 to the next.
    - only if you are doing heavy CPU work like media editing/converting/mixing/rendering/etc.. then you will notice a difference (still not huge though).

extremely simple, just do it once or twice and you will never forget
    - the Cooling Guide gives you the basics of it

if you bring it to a computer store near you and they cannot identify it right away just by looking at it... then DO NOT let them fix it because that means that they are unfamiliar with custom notebooks and/or high-end notebooks.

if you buy it from a vendor, use their support services (most of which are pretty good... through email or phone).

I believe the concept of conditioning does apply in the same way to Li-Po batteries. Hopefully the computer will be set not to over discharge the cells, however as these type of cells are quite new to Laptops this may not be the case.

I have a fair bit of experience with Li-Po cells due to my interest in electric powered radio control helicopters, and the r/c community is pretty much united in knowing that over discharge of Li-Po batteries will damage them.
Also having them permanently fully charged will shorten their life.

The battery in the M860CU is a 3800mah 3cell variety, rated at 11.1v, although fully charged it should be 4.2v per cell or 12.6v. If a Lipo goes below 3.0v per cell (or 9.0v for these cells) it can be permanently damaged.

The best way to store and prolong the life of a Lipo battery is to hold it at 50% charge, or approx 11.0v and store in a cool place.

I've made battery packs out of NiMH and Li-ion cells for my robots for years. The same concept applies to any battery pack protected by an onboard PCB voltage regulator on the individual cells, or at the main terminal where the circuits would lead out. Yes, Li-po's have the same minimum safe voltage as Li-ion, 3v. But since all modern notebook batteries have a built in regulator on the PCB board inside of the battery pack to cut off current at the minimal and maximal voltage levels, there is absolutely no way the cells will be discharged below 3v or overcharged above 4.2v. Like I mentioned, the only way to get rid of that failsafe limit is to physically dismantle the battery pack and remove the PCB as the cells in all notebook batteries packs, including the new Li-po's, are unprotected on their own.

Essentially, my guide stands true for both Li-ion and Li-po.

Regarding storage for periods longer than one month, you are correct. Discharging the battery to 50% charge and keeping it somewhere cool is indeed the most optimal method for long term storage. Anywhere between 40-70% also works just as well as the nominal voltage per cell would still be fairly close to 3.7v.

Prime 95 sucks the battery down in a VERY short time

Anyone have any advice on setting up my new laptop?
I ordered it without a OS, wanting to install Windows7 Ultimate 64bit. When I first booted it said no OS found. Fine, I popped in my Win7 disk and it prompted me to do a upgrade. I tried to do advance install, format hard drive, but it wouldn't let me. Eventually I kept trying and I was able to. Win7 installed pretty fast. What did I do wrong? Do I need to change any settings in the bios? What is disable Legacy OS support? It said something about EFI?

After Windows 7 is installed what drivers should I install? So far I had to install 2 drivers for the card reader and the hot key utility. Anything else? I think I also need to install the latest Nvidia drivers. Thanks in advance for any help.

Usually I just log out of Windows when I hit 10% and reboot into my BIOS menu and let my notebook sit there until the battery dies.

Where the hell did you get the idea of charging the battery for eight hours for the first time?

Charge it to full, then discharge it to zero. After that you can use your battery all you want. It's not hard.

Each to his own. Personally I wouldn't want the cells to go any lower than 3.13 volts per cell (or 9.4 v)
