Boot times are all about the speed of the primary drive. You want to get as fast of an SSD as you can in there. The Intel 520 series or Samsung 840 Pro are the way to go.

Always a good idea to check. With the current SSD's saturating SATA III speeds, the next thing to consider its IOPS which Samsung 840 Pro seem to be a little more.

i agree, i woud like a SSD with a high random 4k iop count, thats how win7 boots correct? so the faster the count the quicker the boot time

The 4k numbers make the most noticeable difference as thats what most programs including Windows uses. They're not pulling 256MB or larger files at a time but thats where you typically see the fastest speeds during benchmarks.

Hi, so I'm almost positive I'm going to be buying this laptop through XoticPC. But I have one question. I was originally going to get an mSATA SSD to go along with the base 750GB HDD, but decided to skip on the SSD to buy later and instead upgrade the graphics card to the 675MX. I just wanted to know that when I get the SSD later to use for the OS, would I be able to do a fresh install of windows 8 from the DVD shipped with my order (that would already be on the HDD), or would I have to clone it from the HDD?

Hi Banhmill, and congrats on your first post!
Yes you will be able to use disc that comes with the computer and install it onto an SSD you purchase and install later. Good plan too, its always easier to upgrade to a SSD later then to upgrade the video card later.

Just a quick one... my P150EM keyboard went faulty so I have just received a new one. I noticed that the function and Windows key (old windows key is now a Windows 8 key) have now been switched, however when turning on the machine and trying to type, I noticed that all the other key functions had changed as well..

Can anyone advise if this should be the case? What needs to be done to rectify this? Do I need to flash the bios to the latest revision?

    Thanks

Hello from Amsterdam, for all SSD owners I would like to recommend freeware FancyCache for disk (google). It is perfect specially for boosting small read/writes.

Check that the CPU was installed correctly and heatsink is firmly on there. Also could try to unseat and reseat RAM in case a module didn't go in quite right.

unseating didn't work, so I swapped ram and still the same problem, blank screen when I power on laptop. I dont think the cpu is the problem sonce I used it only a few hours before, is there something else that can go wrong apart from.a faulty lcd or.motherboard? however comp does not turn off by its own now though

So I took a gamble on my $3000 build and requested Sager to install specific RAM in the machine and instead got Patriot Signature RAM (Just a heads up to anyone building their machines from SAGER this month) this is likely the same RAM you will get. It appears to be medium grade RAM but I will have to now uninstall it once the machine gets here and order gaming grade RAM to install and try to sell it to get my money back that I paid to have SAGER install it.

Otherwise it's taken a mere 2 weeks to build/overclock and ship my machine from XoticPC...so it seems to be moving quickly. Hopefully it will be here for Memorial Day weekend for me to enjoy.

Derek should I have any concerns with the BIOS when installing the new RAM once it arrives from Amazon?

I finally pulled the trigger and ordered NP9150 from XoticPC! :D This is my second laptop from them. My prior rig was NP9280, which went through hell and back with me over the years (heat damage, physical damage, you name it.) I totally loved every minute of it. :) I wanted to pick up something a little smaller scale, but still powerful enough, with more modern technology, and upgradable. NP9150 fit the bill perfectly!

After 1 day of credit card confirmation process (I had totally forgotten which contact info I originally set up for the business account!?), the order went through quickly. Order cleared last Thursday, the machine was shipped from Sager to XoticPC's Nebraska facility Monday (in order to save me CA sales tax.) As of this Thursday, it's shipped from XoticPC to me, and I expect to receive it by next Wednesday (I chose ground shipping.)

That's 13 days from cleared order, with two separate shipping process! Another way to put it, had I ordered it to be shipped directly from Sager to me, I could have potentially received it within 3-5 days! Impressive! :)

Looking forward to getting my hands on this baby next week! :D

i want to reinstall windows and i want to switch from bios/mbr to uefi/gpt.
ive been trying for like 3 days to get windows 7 x64 to boot and install in uefi mode from both a cd and usb and everything ive tried doesnt work and it either will give me errors when i try to load it or will just ignore it completely.
ive tried like 10 different methods so i really dont want to try and go through each one to see what went wrong so can someone please just post a step by step guide on how to do it that is known to work by them or others, specifically for this computer since everyone elses "foolproof" methods are apparently not foolproof enough for me.
    thanks

Why don't you disable uefi? Using gpt instead of the mbr partition table is only necessary if you want to make partitions larger than 2tb.

You need a replacement keyboard as the parts are very specific, or a broken keyboard to get keys from.

Ok bit of a weird one here. I have a 7970m with intel i7 3630qm and Seagate momentusXT hybrid drive, a few days back I installed the 13.4whql from AMD but on launching Borderlands 2 I got weird screen flashing almost as if the screen was failing, this was on menus and in game. I decided to try the new Betas to see if it fixed it but had no luck. after installing various drivers I decided my laptop had became the spawn of Satan and was 'unclean' so I installed a corsair force 3 240gb and re-installed a fresh copy of windows 8, again I tried 13.4whql and nearly tore my hair out when I got the same flickering (not even screen tearing more a arghhh its going to blow up). I stress tested with furmark and Heaven Benchmark and a hour of Battlefield 3, temps never went above 72c and I had no problems so I knew it wasn't hardware, the only option I had left was to delete all AMD drivers and go back to the 13.1whql which I had used last time I played Borderlands 2, Hallelujah it worked - no flickering at all.
So my question is: firstly has anyone else had issues with the newer drivers and Borderlands 2 and secondly which drivers can I go upto without encountering the issue (if it really exists).

Just in case you are wondering I have ordered a HDD caddy for £15 from Amazon and im going to remove my optical drive and replace it with the 750gb Seagate momentusXT so its not going to waste, the optical drive will be put in a usb caddy for the once every 5 years i'll be using it.

Which of the following would be a better option for the NP9150?

    Crucial M4 2.5" MLC Internal SSD (9.5mm)
    Crucial M4 2.5" MLC Internal SSD (7mm)

Everything else seems identical except for the depth, and 2g in weight difference. You know I'm hopeless when I'm already planning upgrades before the laptop even arrives (tomorrow!) ;)

    **EDIT**
Got my answer through further searching. 7mm is specifically meant for Ultrabook form factor, so unnecessary/inadvisable for my machine, right?

Oh, you've got to be kidding me.... :( Train derailed?! Googling, "san pablo ca train derailment" I find that this is a usual occurrence with UPS.

    train.png

Really? 254 "train derailments" in 5 years? Apparently this is one of the standard codes UPS uses whenever they screw up (loading the palette to a wrong truck/train, a palette being left behind, etc). Train derailment is among the exceptions that exempts them from having to issue refund (act of God, terrorism, etc.)

    Adventures of UPS shipping... :mad2:

Bugger and damn it. Ordered http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004ZXU72Y/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 to replace my optical drive with a second ssd, thought i'd play safe and go with a reputable make, money down the drain - front plate from the sony opti-arc bd drive doesn't fit it and even worse its too narrow and doesn't line up properly. Im guessing what I need is the 12.5mm drive, anyone have a recommendation?

Oh and my driver problem.....rolling back to 13.1whql was the best thing I've done, i'm getting better framerates and previously unplayable games like borderlands2 and shift2 unleashed are running smooth as a very smooth thing on a smooth day in smoothsville.

Hey guys, I'm in the market to upgrade my old gaming laptop (Asus G51Jx w/360M) that has served me well so far but getting a bit slow for the latest games. I was looking at getting an NP9150 but I see it is no longer listed on xoticpc nor on LPC digital. Any idea what is going on? Has it been superceded? (is there a new model out!?)

    Hi All :hi2:

Im complete noob as far as pc gaming is concerned but decided with the next gen consoles coming to bite the bullet and see how green that grass really is, I needed a new laptop anyway and after the small fortune I spent getting the PS3 at launch thought I may as well get a gaming one.

After much research I just ordered myself a Vortex III (re-branded p150em/np9150) from pcspecialist.co.uk don't expect it for couple of weeks but thought i'd introduce myself in-case i have any stupid questions (don't worry I know how to use the search function) or have any problems in future. Fwiw I'm glad iv found such an active forum.

Specs are intel i7-3630, GTX 680M, 4gb ddr3 1600mhz (to be doubled on arrival) and 750gb hdd 7200rpm. I originally set myself max £1000 budget and looked at Lenovo y500 and MSI gx60 but every store bought laptop was compromise of cpu or gpu so went over budget (£1160) with intention of adding more memory and ssd down the line and hopefully having something up-gradable in the future.

Cant wait for it to get here !

So it arrived in 2 weeks and 3 days!!! This thing is a MONSTER. I'll just leave this here for now and will add more information and the benchmark screenshots soon. I'd like to thank Derek for making this thing streamlined and easy. Having everything be received and working is a huge deal in my current predicament so that was super awesome. Getting Steam and all my games Downloaded on it here shortly then will have some more videos of running some crazy crap in Ultra :) Finally got the video working right...eesh that was a pain.

It's no longer being produced as the next model is coming out sometime next month (gtx 760m, 765m, 770m, 780m; haswell CPUs; second mSATA slot). I'm waiting for the release myself :)

I thought AMD had problems on the P150EM!!! How about nVidia...?

I put a (Clevo) GTX 660M on my P150EM, momentarily replacing the 7970M. The fan keeps kicking in, on and off and on and off, despite Optimus being apparently activated (for example, HWInfo identifies Intel as GPU#0 and 3DMark11 identifies the 660M as the secondary card).

The drill with the AMD card was simple - merely start any 3D program and the videocard fan would be silent until the next 3D stint. With the nVidia card, this does not seem to work at all. I tried both the 306 and the 320 WHQL drivers and the symptoms are identical - the fan works on and off. What's more, the card seems to idle correctly and the temps are quite fine when Optimus is activated (below 40*C).

Is there any solution to this?

    Hi everyone!

After receiving yesterday my XMG P502Pro (Clevo P150EM), installing Win 8 pro (x64) and all the drivers, I can tell everything works perfectly. Only issue was a few connection drops from my Killer 1103, but after updating Win8, not happening any more.

Also, the only issue so far with the 7970M has been after installing Bioshock Infinite, in which the menu was working ok (no sound/music tho) and then when I tried to star a game, everything was black, apart from the small text box t the bottom telling me that I got a new pistol or whatever, but couldn't see/hear anything. Tried to play videos in Youtube and MPC and they all work and sound ok. Maybe is an error from the game? I installed as well PowerDVD 13 Ultra, but couldn't play any of my blu-ray discs, and when I tried to play any HD video/movie, I had video but no sound.

Last, I ordered my laptop with the 256GB SSD Samsung PM841 pro, but couldn't find any info about the firware, to check if it's using the latest one or not. Going to the samsung website the only info I found about it was that the SSD is "consumer sample"? Any idea about that?

Thank you guys in advance :)

    Cheers from Barcelona ;)

I'm running 13.4 with win7 and had no issues with infinite. Just finished it the other day. Can't comment on blu ray. No issue with HD streaming though.

    Hi everyone!

I'm trying to enter in Kaspersky Rescue Disk by usb boot, but it never works. I tried with 2 different flash drivers and they work on a Samsung notebook, but don't work in the P150EMx... They appear in the boot options, but when I choose to boot by them, the notebook goes automatically to the windows 8.
Can anyone help me with it?

    Thank you very much!

Usually if the notebook ignores a boot option it's deemed invalid by the machine but you could try F11 (IIRC) at startup to enter boot options and choose it manually.

This model has disappeared from the xoticpc site, has it been discontinued?

Have a look around, the stock decision of a single site does not always mean that.

    Hey guys,
So I have had my NP9150 for about a month and a half or so and its running pretty much stock except for the GTX 675mx. Its been running amazing but sometimes it will randomly and without warning have huge frame rate drops, such as from 50fps or so in skyrim (with gfx mods and an enb) down to 10, and in other games too. I am running a slight overclock but this seems to be occurring even when its running stock. I'm running the newest nvidia drivers (320.18) and that doesn't seem to change anything. has anyone else been experiencing this? is this possibly an nvidia optimus problem even though I told all my games to run on the dedicated card by default? Any ideas? I have found that a reboot generally fixes the problem but then it just does it again randomly.

You need to monitor a few things like the CPU and GPU temperatures to give us a clue what is going on.

I added the benchmarks to the description of the video and I'll link them here too:

If you max out the slider with the default vbios you will likely get clock bouncing in the most stressful games.

I am going to leave them where they are, I like stability over risk...at this point this Laptop can run anything there is on the market maxed out except maybe Witcher 2 with Ubersampling.
