In high performance the CPU wont clock down, for idle noise levels switch to balanced.

Depends on what style of heatsink you have, you will want the latest style with merged PWM + core pipes rather than split. Pad arangement is different.

Even (i created myself new power profile) when i chose passive/active cooling system in windows power mode + cpu power at 50%(give me some 1.2Ghz max) cpu in idle heat up to 50-55 them system cooling activate cpu fan and put temperature to 40C. And then i just wait and observe how temperature go to 55C and then operation repeat itself. Just strange. And i observer no power consumption in HWMonitor or some services activity in task manager.
So i just use this laptop with 1.2GHz max and in idle/browsing/typing this message temp go up. No matter what i do. Will try to change therm-paste in two weeks (will try arctic mx-4).

And for the heatsink i have the same as in picture below:

    Thank you.

Notebooks don't tend to have much passive cooling, so yes often the machine warms up to the point set in the EC and the fans kick in to cool it down. Some manufacturers run the fan all the time to provide a more consistent cooling noise but not everyone likes that.

Flickering screen problem SOLVED on my P150SM -

I took the screen loose from the outer case and looked at the flat gold colored screen connection, after carefully removing the clear tape that is intended to keep the connector from wiggling out, I could see two black wires twisted together with a bead of solder on the end not connected to anything.

On closer inspection I saw the original home for the two wires on the outside flat part of the connector, indicated by the left over solder where the wires were originally connected. This appears to be the ground wire for the LCD. I turned on the machine and could recreate the flicker by touching the ground wires to the connector. Without the ground touching the screen would go blank.

I soldered the wires back to the connector (using a lighted magnifying glass, as everything is very tiny) and the screen is flicker free as it was when I first bought it!

New Bios for 150SM-A is out. Bios 09 and EC 08, it works well with the new Hotkey 3.08.20, that Clevo just released for the P150SM-A.

Thanks for letting us know about the new bios and hotkey! Where did you get it from? From your reseller? Are the custom fan profiles in Hotkey finally working?

Hotkey is available on Clevos P150SM-A support page, be sure to choose the Asia ftp link. 藍天Clevo
Wait for Prema to release the Stock Bios files, since they are usually a mess when getting them straight from clevos ftp server....

But every time i shutdown laptop (not reboot) the default blue back light stay active so i need deactivate it (2 time fn+back light). Some had same issue? Maybe create new theme? Not a big deal. But i suppose it's not working as should.

The machine will always default it to blue when you turn it on as it does not save your value in the firmware but the software alters it so when it goes into windows it should restore your settings.

I want to ask if some used Cooler Master NotePal U3 or similar cooling system. There is any visual benefit from them to this laptop?

    I have P150SM-A with 970m, and have a CoolerMaster U3.

Firstly, this notebook has excellent cooling system itself. The only thing I don't like is 'thermal cycling'. I live in Australia, so summer gets quite hot. Right now, it's 27c ambient in my room with my P150SM-A and high humidity. Without a cooler, and just doing light browsing etc, the CPU gradually heats up to the point that the fans will kick in on slow speed, and bring the temp back down to ~40C and it gradually heats up and the cycle repeats. What I want to do is stop that happening, and just maintain a constant temperature. I had an XPS M1730 and if you look at what happened to that with thermal cycling of the graphics cards, then you'll understand why I don't like it.

Does the CoolerMaster U3 help? Well, some days it does, but on hotter days, it is only really slowing down the cycle. I have tried to position the fans where I think they help the most, but I could be off. With gaming, the temps might lower slightly, but the fans etc in your notebook will do 10x better job than the CoolerMaster will. In other words, the peformance and temps of the CPU and GPU will easily overwhelm the cooler.

My second line of attack is now a 'vacuum' cooler. Basically you stick it at the back of the notebook where the vent is and it sucks out air. Got it via ebay. Using the U3 to blow air in and this 'sucker fan' to suck air out stabilises temperature around 40C in 27C ambient like it is now doing browsing/email light internet stuff. That is with both coolers running at 100%. The focus of the coolers is mainly at the CPU, as the discrete GPU is not running for these purposes. It's noisy. Maybe I can turn them down, but will worry about that later. For now, it seems to be working for me.

I havent't tried this combination under gaming or high loads yet. I suspect it might take off some degrees, but as I said, the notebooks own fans etc are the key thing here. As I mentioned, my aim is really to stabilise things under low load conditions in warm ambient temperatures.

That's the main reason i asking for. So you can gain low temperature or slow this start-stop cycle down. So i will think about this cooler.
Maybe any idea about similar cooling system? Some system better than other?
    Thanks.

    Hi Folks,

Have been searching through the forum and trying to read all 187 pages lol but still unable to answer my own question..

I have a P150SM and upgraded my dying GTX780m to a GTX970m and it works beautifully with a a modified *.inf file.. is there a bios already modified or is it possible to modify the system bios to support the 970 so I no longer require a modified *.inf to install drivers ?.. my main reason is I might want to sell the laptop in the future and would rather the new owner did not have to mess about with this.. it would also make it better to sell... if there is anyone able to do this, I would be willing to donate for their time, would not be alot, maybe around £30... modifying a BIOS is beyond my abilities.

    Thanks
    David

Prema's bios may have already integrated that in, you can check his files at premamod.com. If it works then drop him a donation.

157 is the more flashy one with lights and stuff. More like one AlienWare wanna be. It's slightly bigger and has one more 2.5" 7mm SATA slot.

The 150 is the classic look, the 157 is a bit bigger and is an updated look while it is a bit bigger it gives you an extra 7mm 2.5" bay.

    Hi all,

I'm awaiting delivery of my P150SM-A. It's Horize branded from a reseller here in Australia. I think it's comes with a 180W power brick by default and I've configured it to include the nvidia GTX 970, if it makes any difference.

Is it alright to run the laptop with the battery removed? I've been doing that with my existing laptop for quite some time already, as I think it prolongs the life of the battery by not trickle charging the battery, and not allowing the battery to heat up, since I game on my existing laptop.

Is the wattage of the power brick sufficient? I remember reading a review on the P650XX where the power brick apparently is not sufficient to power the laptop when it's running on a full load.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Clevo-P651SE-Schenker-XMG-P505-Barebones-Notebook-Review.127978.0.html

Is the default 180W alright or should I get the 220W brick which comes with the P170SM by default?

    Cheers.

Yes you can remove the battery though one of the feet is on it. Modern charging circuits manage the battery properly, it comes down to temperature variation more. It would not be shipped with a brick that is insufficient as they are properly designed. Some machines are run close to the limit so that weaker bricks give out faster but the one you have listed is well away from that.

Hi David, though i cannot answer your question, i would like to ask if you really did the upgrade on a p150sm not p150sm-a, as i got an answer from the german manufactor, that this would not be possible. From time to time there are mxm 970m cards on .bay, but until now i am scared by the manufactors answer on one hand and by the price of the card on the other.
is switching the cards something that can be done "at home" like changing msata cards or wlan cards? and further on, what kind of inf is required? i know those from lap..go.

Sorry for the late reply but not been on here for a while. Yes it as P150SM non A model.. Swapping the card was easy.. if your re-using your original heat sink, just remember to clean off old paste and replace it with a good thermal paste and make sure hte thermal pads align correctly with the new card... Dont tighten the heat sink screws too tight as the heads will snap easy (found out the hard way.. twice). As for the inf file, you will need to google laptop custom inf for nvidia as not sure if im allowed to link or or not but it is lap..go. Once you have it, extract the drivers, replace the driver inf with the custom. You then need to restart with driver signature disabled to allow a custom driver install... just google how to do it, easy enough and takes minutes.

The card is not detected in the bios but will install with the custom inf file.. mine has been running fine, rarely goes over 65c on full load.. my old 780 would go up to 83 - 85c. I believe Prema will be releasing a BIOS so that we no longer require a custom INF but I doubt it will be any time soon as seems to have alot on.

    Thanks
    David

Just took delivery of my P150SM-A. Very happy with it so far. It's a world of difference compared to my old Asus N81VP.

Just wondering, apart from CPU-Z and GPU-Z, what programs are recommended for monitoring hardware condition / temperatures?

In case it makes any difference, my machine is configured with a 4710 CPU, GTX970 and Windows 8.1

    Cheers.

    I say : +1 for Hwinfo64, probably the most complete one !
you recommend also intel XTU which is very complete for CPU monitoring and have some useful features ( undervolting, iGPU stress test)

Regarding MSI afterburner, does the software work on non MSI hardware? I thought all along you'll need their hardware in order for the software to work.

About the mSata bug in some motherboards... How did it end up?
Cause I have a p150sm with one of the bad motherboards, and i wanted to add a 250 Samsung EVO 840 Msata ssd to my laptop. I have a 750 WD 7200rpm for now only.
I just wanted to ask if that msata will work on any of the two msata bays.

    Hello:
Is there a Eurocom guy in these forums? I just purchased the X3 R2 (p157sm-a) from them (already managed to spill something on the keyboard and have gotten a new one sent out) and I just realized why the touchpad led (fugly right?) isn't working... the whole friggin ribbon cable is missing?

Now I'm wondering if I got a lemon / refurb? Does anybody know how I should handle this (e.g is it worth making a stink about this) to the reseller?

    Thanks.

Yes, yes it is worth making a stink about it. That should have never passed QA.
