Yeah, I looked thru Crystal disk mark and there is no setting to adjust the drive it is testing, it will only test the SSS's installed. Or maybe I missed something in the settings. I know there is a tool, but can't locate one...... I did it before...........just cant remember what I used.
@unityole.....didn't you mention an app to me before that can check the usb/external drive speeds?
Thanks

Finally got the beast from ssj92 and got it set up late this evening. Waiting for the dual AC adapter setup and secondary GPU installation kit, so just one 980M at the moment. Tickled with the CPU performance. Running reasonably cool with Liquid Ultra at a sweet 4.5GHz on all cores/threads with nothing but stock fan profiles. Is there a way to manually set full fan speed on this beast? Appears HWiNFO64 does not offer that functionality on this machine.

FN+1 = full fansMr. Fox likes this. -
Doing FN+F1 toggles the touchpad on/off. I remember reading that key combo would do full fans, but maybe that's the earlier version of this model or something. The icon on the keyboard also shows it is for the touchpad control. It would stink not being able to run the fans full blast whenever I feel like it. I hope there is a way to do that.
-
Yeah I bought one of the first ones off the line, the first bios update that came out was mainly for this function toggles fans with FN +1, has worked like that thru bios'es 3,4,5. Including the prema bios'es. Only works from the on board key board not external one.
Maybe you have the original bios installed which did not allow for full fans.
It is not FN +F1(wrong), it is FN +"1"............
-
You get it to work using the FN+1 command?
Also, I think your voltage settings are off. You should be below 4 seconds when running a 4.5 ghz over clock. -
Thanks, was using F1 instead of 1. User error.
I'm sure I am nowhere close to where I need to be yet for the new CPU. I've playing with it less than 24 hours, so I have a LOT to learn about the new machine and CPU. -
Voltage and watts were both off from optimal. This is much better and the temps are even better.
-
Now that is more closer to right. Will it complete wprime at 4.5 ghz?
-
That was wPrime 32M. Do you mean 1024M?
-
You going to delete that score anytime soon like normal?
-
@johnksss - I will need to use AC for that because it gets too warm about 75% of the way through 1024M and starts losing stability.

How do you like the P570WM so far Mr. Fox? Is it living up to your expectations?
-
mr fox joined the ranks of p570wm man.
@Meaker, i thought they were cheap usb 3.0 controller to until I maxed speed, you'll be surprised what china is capable of doing under competition lol
@Takaezo, if you have an usb 3.0 enclosure with a good usb 3.0 controller, then put a ssd in there and test it. if what you have is what i think you've got, then port 3 should be for power and likely not work with any device. also if premas bios have DMI link power management, leave that enabled otherwise may cause issues, although you may be able to increase pcie performance, similar to m18x r2. try a few usb 3.0 device that is known to go over 200MB/s read, for example sandisk extreme USB 3.0 64gb, two of them and you'll know if its more than 350MB/s capable at the same time on sequential. if you're in windows 7.. then may not do as good..Takaezo likes this. -
I am extremely pleased with it. I wish the guts of it would fit into the M18xR2 chassis and then it would be absolutely perfect. It is built really well, easy to work on, and runs like a scalded dog. I'm eager for the rest of the parts to arrive so I can have both 980Ms and the dual adapter setup in action. The CPU draws so much power I cannot fully overclock even one 980M along with the CPU because it shuts itself off. It's absolutely an uber-beast laptop. And, it does look a lot more attractive in real life than it does in photos and video, as expected. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it an 11.
-
real problem is audio and plastic, how tough is the plastic handling the thick machine?
-
@unityole, oh ok I will try an external ssd. All three ports are working fine now, I can use anything I have tried in any of the three slots, even my 3D space mouse. So that isn't/wasn't the issue at all (enabled in bios as well), it was just this stupid action of unplugging and plugging and re-re-pluging. You really have to use the pliers like I mentioned. And of course removing the Microsoft drivers that tries to install automatically. I will try and check the speed though as you mentioned.
@Mr. Fox, My best Cinebench was 14.01 pts, at 4.9ghz for this machine(non sli 2 x 5000m's), just for your reference; I saw one other better score with a Xeon. you should be able to surpase that when you get solid oc'ed SLI 980m's going. I am very impressed with that CPU you are using, seems like a very good chip for you to oc to that measure so affluently. Good luckMr. Fox likes this. -
The copper painted/coated plastic frame is real good imho, you are correct though on the audio front, it is my only real complaint about the system, it has terrible audio function.
-
how about the palm rest? isnt it too short, even alienware hurts my hand and i use external keyboard.
to remove microsoft driver that installs it, you can remove it from driverstore respository then it won't install itself anymore. either rename those drivers files or remove them from system. -
I never used it for that long, I use external wireless keyboard and mouse. rarely use the onboard key board for more than a few minutes....
-
I'm never thrilled about plastic for most things, but this P570WM is built very sturdy. It's like a thick plastic plank that reminds me of the older HP and Dell business class laptops built with very thick, rigid plastic bodies. I'm much happier with the build quality than I expected I would be, even though it's a long ways from matching the M18x chassis. Really, nothing to complain about IMHO regarding the chassis.
Yes, the audio is pretty poor, but I don't use any of my machines for music or movies. Games sound good enough and I can always slap on a headset (which the wife wants anyhow). I only bought this bad boy for overclocked number chasing fun. I did not need it for anything else because mMy M18xR2 still does everything to my satisfaction except that it reached a dead end without proper functionality with GTX 980M.
I guess the only thing I can really knit-pick right now is the placement of the "Delete" key. I am used to it being right above the "Backspace" key. -
Hey guys, I have these memory sticks:

Can somebody post a xtu screenie of their settings for overclocking ram to 1866 please?
Same here. I just like to keep my machines as pristine as possible and I don't want my laptop keyboard looking like my external one xDLast edited: Feb 2, 2015ole!!! likes this. -

Hey guys I'm curious about this laptop and its cooling ability and the noise levels, with the newer higher end CPU and 980m in SLI, what's temps and noise like?
ole!!! likes this. -
not that it matters anyway, right now its limited by CPU and won't change till skylake which is at 20 pcie lanes. now CPU aside, its entirely up to clevo if they are gonna use all 20 lanes so.. =/

Dual PSU, no AC cooling, just FN+1 and Liquid Ultra.

Just be careful around the aluminium with it
-
No reason to get it on the aluminum, but you definitely don't want to do that. It does not even need to cover the entire IHS cap, just enough to cover the part of the IHS that would be in contact with the die and a bit beyond for good measure.
I think I am going to try that IndigoXtreme thermal solution and see how that does. It looks interesting. Anyone else tried it?
http://www.indigo-xtreme.com/page-bab.shtml -
Anyone have any comments on noise level and cooling performance, I'm concerned about the level of noise as I'm use to my m18x R2 being very quiet and cool, and my GT80 just died so I've returned it and considering either another gt80 or the p570wm with liquid ultra
-
Only if you buy the wrong kit. The reflow process looks to be interesting. Apparently, when done right it is amazing like Liquid Ultra, but if not followed to a tee isn't effective. I am really interested in this. Just curious if anyone else here has tried it yet.
It is specific to each CPU. Here is the one for the Ivy E Socket 2011: Indigo Xtreme Precision Engineered Thermal Interface (ETI) Kit for LGA 2011 - 2 Pack | FrozenCPU -
Isn't CLU like 3-4c better than all current thermal solutions?
-
Probably so, but I have not tried this because it is not available for mobile or de-lidded desktop CPUs.
Here's my first overclocked Vantage run... http://www.3dmark.com/3dmv/5215793
Not using AC cooling just yet, so I had to lower the CPU from 4.5 to 4.3GHz to avoid thermal issues with Vantage's brutal physics tests.

Have you replaced the pads on the cpu cooler with thinner ones? You can improve the performance of the cpu cooler by getting them spot on.

Alright I guess there isn't much info on the noise of machine, I'll pick up something else which I can obtain info on, thanks anyhow.

I am using the stock pads, but I have more bulk pads and might look into that. Thanks for the suggestions.
If the person that did those tests did everything perfect, it looks like it might not be worth it. I may try it anyway just to satisfy myself. Thanks for posting the chart. It takes an entire tube of Liquid Ultra to do the job on a desktop IHS because it is so large. Cool Laboratories is kind of stingy with the small amount in a tube. With a de-lidded CPU or mobile (lidless) CPU there is enough in one tube to repaste about 3 times.
I can only offer my own observations based on my personal opinion of what constitutes "noise" and I can say that have not experienced any problems with noise. I would consider this machine's noise level to be normal and consistent with my Alienware beasts. This is subjective and what I consider too much versus what others might feel is inconclusive. There is nothing about it that I would consider obnoxious. Fans make noise and if you are running powerful components at elevated clock speeds, being able to hear the fans when they run pretty much goes with the territory.
Hope this helps to some extent. I have no way to measure the decibel level if that is what you are looking for. If you are looking for something silent in an extreme performance laptop, good luck with that.
Edit: I see you also asked about temps. Temps are fine. Even when heavily overclocked they are good. This machine has a very good cooling system. CPU depends on how much you are overclocking it and what you are running. Playing games, running Fire Strike, 3DMark 11, my CPU temps are manageable at 4.5GHz using Liquid Ultra. Running 3DMark Vantage physics test, I need to drop back to 4.3GHz using only the fans for cooling or use AC. 980M SLI with a 1300+ core overclock stays below 80°C and usually close toe 70°C in all of the testing I have done.Last edited: Feb 4, 20151nstance likes this. -

Definitely not expecting anything quiet just not obnoxiously loud, my alienware m18x r2 was perfectly quiet under load with a small and simple OC to boot! Just not sure what laptop can fill that void without being incredibley noisey kind of like the GT80 tends to be
-
I think you will find it very much like your M18xR2 as far as noise is concerned... as you know, I have both and they are basically the same in that respect (which is very good in my opinion).
I edited my post above to answer your questions on temps. -
Would CPU would you all recommend for this system
-
Definitely a hexacore 4930K or 4960X... as far as I am concerned, nothing less will do. Those two extra cores make a huge difference in performance, even without any overclock.
-
My desktop rig uses a 4930k is there any benefit to the 4960x in this laptop or does thermals and such become an issue, i do plan on overclocking to a respectable everyday OC
Mr. Fox likes this. -
Johnksss and Santander have achieved higher levels of performance with the 4960X than what they were able to with the 4930K. I plan to push the 4930K as hard as it will let me, gather whatever points I can on HWBOT.org using a laptop, then later on upgrade to 4960X. I would say if you have money, always choose the Extreme CPU option. Others will disagree, but there are no free rides. Extreme CPUs cost more because they are a better product. If you are just going to have fun with overclocking, the K series DT CPU is a nice option that is more affordable.
Edit: I went ahead and ordered an IndigoXtreme kit just to see how it works for me compared to Liquid Ultra. If does equally well, it will be a slightly more affordable thermal solution... a 2 pack is $22.99 versus about $13 for a tube of Liquid Ultra. It should be fun to test even if it is not as good. My curiosity needs to be satisfied, if nothing else.
