Those 980M clocks appear to be stock vBIOS? Or have you been using Prema's vBIOS instead of svl7's?
-
-
Right now I am using @Prema vBIOS.
-
How is it compared to the other one? Do you get to overclock further or anything?
-
Since my 980M cards are lousy overclockers, I cannot overclock them far enough to identify which one is better at the edge of stability. I cannot actually reach the edge of stability, LOL. I've tried both in an effort to avoid having my screen go black randomly around 1325-1350MHz on core, but the behavior is identical with both vBIOSes. I like both vBIOSes... both are amazing work and both doing an excellent job, but I am not thrilled with the lackluster overclocking capacity of my 980M GPUs. This is not an SLI thing... they did it in my Alienware also, single or dual, Windows 7, Windows 8, different drivers... behaves consistently the same under all conditions. I need to get my AC cooling setup in place again to confirm it, but I think the problem is not as severe when the GPUs are kept at chilly temperatures. With stock cooling, the black screen is predictable, but I was able to overclock much better when benching using AC. The GPU cores are not getting too hot, but something else might be.

Makes some sense... what about doing what Meaker did with the VRMs? Adding some of them on? You could get by with your 780Ms until then, I'm sure.

That would fix his issue yes, probably got unlucky with the batch of mosfets used on the lower end of the bell curve.
-
Would it be possible to assign PhysX to the Quadro?
Do you know of any benchmarks for a setup like that? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Technically you could but it would perform no better than a geforce at the task and it would be slower than an SLI combo of the same card.
-
Thanks! I wonder how better would it be (FurMark & 3DMark) having a 980M with K5100M instead of two K5100M.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I'm confused, why do you want the K5100M at all?
-
OpenGL and OpenCL. A single 980M will do just fine for me since I usually run on 1920x1080.
The improvement of the K5100 may be worth the price depending on the drawbacks of the mix. So far, I didn't find any reports on this setup.
I've just found this[1]:
It's old but kind of made me afraid of trying to mix them up.

You mean for CAD programs?
-
Yes, and simulation tools.
Although I can also run the 980M by software, it's mainly for games. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You could give it a go, nvidia are mostly just covering themselves.

So you really went and bought on of these huh?

I wonder if it can handle 2800 MB read and 2000 MB write speeds with 4x m.2 drives in raid 0.....
I sure hope it's better than dells setup. Because their's needs work.
Will it let you sli two docking stations together? LOL -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The only systems capable of beyond 1.7gb/sec are devices using pci-e from the cpu directly (That would eliminate sli in a none 2011 system) and the x99 platform using enough sata drives and pci express devices.
The lesser pin count sockets are limited by the cpu -> south bridge link which runs at 1.7gb/sec so no matter the combination of pci-e or sata from the south bridge that is the max you will see.
X79 only supports sata ii beyond the first two devices so would need 11 drives to reach the speeds you are talking about.
This is why a refresh from clevo/sager on the line would help those needing a lot of storage speed.
I've got a good combination of 4k and straight line speeds don't worry.
You don't need to worry about the performance level I'm getting John
Now can we move away from other systems because we are getting side tracked again. -
You have me all wrong. I'm not really worried about all that. I already know what top level performance looks like. And what you have is better at storage, but not when it comes to gaming performance. The clevo with 980M's would still out perform it. You got 20k in firestrike right, but your 980m's scored a tad higher correct? So if this was on a purely gaming change then in reality you took a step backward, but I do understand why though.
As to the storage question.. That was me being curious as to whether it could run that. Not for benching purposes. Wasn't sure if it could handle the speeds of the new m.2 drives. If you just bought something like (sata speed) m.2 drives like evos or something. Then it's really not faster than a Clevo/Sager unless you go 3 drives.
Just wanted to clear up the cloak and dagger stuff. Because most didn't know what you had went to.
Me.....Time to test out these 4 Titan X's
Side note: I was more or less just being funny with the jump ship/sli stuff. That's it.
Congratulations on your new platform. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
On a pure gaming challenge an SLI setup needs to be about 30% faster to feel faster due to the less even frame times and other lag caused by SLI.
That's when SLI is working properly. -
Ouch!
Never had 30 percent SLI using 3 or less cards. And all my gaming laptops have been 80 to 100 percent faster in SLI depending on what was being played. I would not bother if it was lower than 50 percent.D2 Ultima likes this. -

Thanks gentleman,....I am pretty excited to try my first ivy bridge-E. Will be shipped Monday,..maybe I will have it by weeks end.

by default it runs cooler, less voltage and faster too. if you can oc it stable past 4.8ghz you're a winner cause with your cooling mod you'll cool it no probTakaezo likes this.

That's quite a bit more investment lol and with the quadros it might not suit his needs.

Thanks,
i was not informed! Sorry for the unrelated post here

@Santander
Well I would like to get a pair of 980m's for it, then I could tinker with trying to strap the Quadro's in sli and get those connections soldered on. But It wont be until the end of summer of more before I can afford them at current prices. I also thought about a quadro and a gtx in combo, but don't have any gtx MXM cards to try, so that will have to wait as well.Santander likes this. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Will the quadro drivers even let them link?
-
@Meaker , not sure I don't think anyone knows. It is my belief that they just left those headers off the GPU's because they never considered them for SLI in a laptop format. But, I think there is no reason it should not work, because I have the option for SLI in my NVidia manager, and it just says disabled, I would think that if it was not available it would be like the options for Bios settings and there would be no option shown at all. Someone posted before that they asked the reseller about this and they told them impossible, but who knows, I have seen some people getting GTX cards to think they are Tesla's, so if I can solder a couple connections and strap them together, maybe it will work, probably not, but I wont try it until I have a replacement.

Anyone know how much a new bottom cover for this beast costs? I'm thinking about modding one, as the stock cover seems to increase temps slightly. Probably traps too much hot stale air in the chassis. I noticed that simply removing the bottom cover drops CPU core load temps about 2-3°C. Having a big opening with a wire grille, leaving just enough material to support the screws, rear rubber feet and attach the wire grille to the inside of the cover might let this machine dump more hot air out of the chassis. With the circular intake holes aligning with the fans, it can draw in cold air just fine, but the air in the chassis doesn't have much of an opportunity to escape.
With bottom cover...
Bottom cover removed...

Maybe RJTech or Eurocom might have it? I think it would be around $70-100...
-
@Mr. Fox It cost me $50 US to buy a new back plate from eurocom + shipping. Tried to get them to send me an entire parts and price list but they wouldn't. I think its ignorant to hold a price list in secret from your customers. I mean if you need a price for a part you can email them and they will quote the price.
Leaving the back plate off is the way to go as you have mentioned. A back plate screen mod would be nice as well.Mr. Fox likes this. -
Both RJTech and Eurocom will have it, I'm sure.
You may need to contact RJTech and say you cannot find the item; I have done this already and they have replied with the correct item. You can say "backplate" or "bottom case" or "bottom cover" and they might be able to find it. RJTech's searching is sometimes... flawed. -
I would be certain and call the part by the exact name in the manual, to increase the odds of getting what your asking for.
-
Well that works, but I specifically meant when talking to RJTech on the phone. When describing it, they will give you feedback and ask you if you mean X or Y. For example, the top part that houses the LCD is in fact the LCD cover. That one surprised me, when Luna and I were hunting, as we couldn't find it anywhere XD.
-
@Takaezo and @D2 Ultima - the official name is "CPU Cover Module" and I have the part number from page 49 of the service manual, but I was curious on the price. $50 is about what I expected new. Finding used chassis parts and other components for Alienware laptops is so easy, but these seem hard to find anything for. Thanks for the input, gents... appreciate it.
