I'm considering pulling the trigger and buying this laptop. I've been eying the MSI GS40 for a few months now, but the P640RE seems to have many advantages, including being less expensive, much more professional looking, and having better speakers. The biggest drawback is that this laptop doesn't have a Thunderbolt 3 connection or any proprietary port to connect to an eGPU, so it isn't as good for future proofing.

Before I make up my mind though, can someone explain a few things to me? Namely...
    1. From this thread, I've gathered that this laptop has two variants, the P640RE and the P641RE, and the sole difference is that the P641 has a more low-key, professional look. Are only certain resellers selling each variant? I can find only the P640 offered on Sager's and XoticPC's websites, while HIDrevolution seems to only offer the P641. Am I missing something?
    2. Can someone point out what the actual differences between the P640 and P641 are? I've looked at pictures of both from the reseller websites, but from what I can tell, they look the same.
    3. If I order a custom-built P640/P641 with a 512GB Samsung 950 Pro NVMe SSD, would I be able to make that the boot drive for Windows 10 (or preferably, could the reseller do this for me so it's ready to go when I receive it)?
Thanks for any help with these questions you can provide!

    1. if you live in asia you could try "Aftershock PC" clevo resellers located in Singapore, they sell P641RE's but afair they have P640RE in the showroom so maybe they sell P640RE's too.
    2. no difference inside, only lid design.
    3. no idea about Windows. Linux could use NVMe SSD as boot drive. The only issue is - the drive is not shown in the BIOS so you may think it is not working, but it works. After you install the OS - BIOS will show the drive in the Boot menu

BTW clevo removed P64*RE models from their website, so this notebook is already outdated lol :D

Thanks, I'm glad to hear that the Sager NP8640 is the more professional-looking design.

Thanks! I'm in the US and checked out Sager's website, and it offers a 950 Pro the primary drive with Windows 10 is a customization option, so I'm pleased with that.

As for this notebook being outdated already... haha, well, I guess I'm a couple months late to the party. But I don't see any other 14" laptops on Clevo's website that have a 970M (see a few with 965M), and I don't see Sager or XoticPC selling 14" laptops newer than the NP8640. Is there any word on when a 14" successor, with a 970M or better, will be released? EDIT: Found the answer ("no") elsewhere in the forums.

I'm doubtful I'll wait for an updated version though - unless someone can convince me that getting this laptop, with its 970M, is a bad decision for my needs? I'd like a laptop that will let me play new game releases for 4-5 years at 1080p or 720p on medium graphics settings and have a smooth framerate (I care more about performance than graphical quality). I know it's a bit of a speculative question, but does anyone have any thoughts on whether this laptop will satisfy these preferences? Or is it essential that I wait for a newer laptop with, say, a Pascal GPU? From what I've gathered elsewhere, the P640 seems like it should work.

Correct. As of right now, there is no word on any new products coming out. But as soon as NDAs lift, you'll start seeing new threads for sure probably.

I'd say that model sounds like it would work for you. Overall, it is still a good system in general and a 970m can handle games well, and should for a while I would think. I suppose you could wait and see what comes out in the future, but it just depends on how bad you might want/need a replacement now.

If you bought a laptop if when it was 1st released and with a 970m. It would already have been 2 years in to its life at the end of the year. You want it for 4/5 years. So in theory you are only going to have it for 2-3 years playing games as you want before noticing it's decline in performance as newer games need more power to run to a good standard.
I'd honestly try and wait it out few months if you can. That way you can have you 5 years to own it then rather than 2 before you realise it's not stacking up which is not what you planned.

Did you make it clear it was an RMA you were after? Give that a go and if you need some help after that then PM your reference number.

Could someone tell me the differences between the four p64's I can find:
    - P64 0 RE
    - P64 1 RE

    - P64 0 RF
    - P64 1 RF

AFAIK The difference between the P64 0-P64 1 series are only cosmetic? But the weird part is the P64 1 from the RE matches the P64 0 from the RF?

And for the RE vs RF it's the USB-c and perhaps GPU options?

RF is the 970m with the RE being the 965m.

The P640/641 difference is the back, P641 one has a matte back while the other one (P640) has some kind of drawing on it so it looks more gamer-like.

    RE/RF difference is that RE has a 3GB 970M with no USB-C, whereas the RF has a 2GB? 965M AND a USB-C port.

Personally, I'd pick up a 641RF, waiting for a Pascal refresh tho :p

Yes im also hoping to find a 641RF decently priced.

Just found it weird the 40-41 part gets changed within the RF-RE series.

    Good point on Pascal refresh.
Do you have any clue how long that might take?

No frekin' idea, but I think there'll be no refresh from Clevo though. 14'' gamer-laptop doesn't have the market share the 15'' has, although it's been getting some more attention in the recent years

Im still hoping for a 13" quad core.. I dont care much about the gpu and the thickness, just footprint and processing power!

There still is some demand for a 13 inch model since the w230s has been discontinued. I don't think I've seen anything in the works, or people showing off demo units or leaks on anything. 14" might be about the smallest to find a quad core in for Clevo, at least for now.

There is a sensible limit of power you can dissipate in a 14 inch chassis which limits you.

Yeah, I suspect a 1080M in a 14" won't be happening. But for me, I'd be happy with a mobile 1060, since it looks like it will offer performance similar to the 980M while requiring much less power.

Edit: had a brain fart and got my gpu generations confused, just corrected that mess :p

I really hope so! People with way more knowledge about this sort of thing than me say that they suspect Clevo will start coming out with at least some new models with Pascal GPUs in September/October. But who knows if that's accurate, let alone whether a P640RE refresh will be one of the earlier models they release. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Its happening most of the time. playing league of legends, Final fantasy 13 and wolfenstein new order.

didnt bother with it so much the first months because i just played league in true full screen and its not happening on that game, now that i have more extra time, tried playing the other games and it has a perfect diagonal tear. when i say perfect it comes from the upper left going lower right. Ive seen some complaints on other forums as well.
here is a sample of what it is - http://i.imgur.com/9XINNLZ.jpg
here is the link to the said problem - https://forums.geforce.com/default/...ues-on-gtx-860m-870m-960m-965m-970m-980m-/15/

I've spotted some strange artefacts when I open the display for about 95 degrees - few hundreds of bright pixels blink randomly around the screen. They are noticeable only on black background as they have white/blue/red color, mostly white.
After watching them for a while I noticed that they do not appear in random places - they all appear in the same place but they blink with random delay. There is much space on the screen where is no any blinking pixels and blinking pixels do not connect to each other - there are no 2/3/n pixels in the same place, they always have some black space between them.
Did anyone else see that? Is that a display cord problem?

Try to open your display for about 85 degrees and then slooowly lean it back to about 110 degrees. Do that really slow as pixels appear in the only one position which is easy to miss. And open some dark picture on background or open the paint program and fill the canvas with the black color.

Is it your angle of looking at it or do you mean you open it and move your head to still be dead on and it blinks? That would be a display cable issue.

I know what he is talking about, I have it on my laptop with 860m very randomly. It isn't due to specific angles of the screen, or cable. I think I have even seen it sometimes in things recorded through OBS, which wouldn't be a monitor issue. I'll randomly get that diagonal tearing, either on my laptop screen or external monitor.

I just played around with settings, as some games won't do it at all, some will do it in full screen, but not in windowed modes (or vice versa). I haven't noticed it much in the last few months, but I'm not sure if it was because I did a clean install, using a different driver, or I just stopped playing games I saw it happen with the most.

The Clevo P640RE/Sager NP8640 has been removed from both Sager's and XoticPC's websites. The only 14" laptop they're still selling is the Clevo N240JU/Sager NP3240. This removal happened very recently, as I was looking at the P640RE on their websites a week ago or so.

Perhaps this means a successor to the P640RE is near :)
