I actually think that this is a feature... No more accidental wake-ups.
Pressing Fn+F12 should also wake it up.

They could have stuffed a taller battery in there with a trade off of higher weight.

Is there a convenient alternative to the built-in control center in terms of fan control? Have the np 8657-s, 2gb gtx 970m. Keeping the fan at automatic works for most situations, but it doesn't seem to be very effective at more demanding tasks. Things like running certain games on higher settings, or the place I've noticed it the most, watching things using a GPU-assisted renderer. In a case like that, using certain more demanding settings, while the playback will start out fine, when the temperature starts to get up there, around 79, 80 degrees, I'm assuming the throttling kicks in, because I'll immediately get massive frame drops and spikes in render time. If I pause, let the temp drop, and then resume, playback will be fine for a few more minutes until the temperature rises again.
I could run the fan on the maximum setting when I know I'm doing something that's more demanding, but not only does it sound like a freight train, I feel like that would wear out the fan pretty quick. I would have assumed that the automatic setting would regulate the fan so that the temperature never gets to the point where throttling is required, but just listening to it, it sounds like it barely picks up at that point. -

As with most notebooks it's a custom control scheme so no out of the box programs will support it.
Check you clocks during the render to see what happens, you may also check to see if you are hitting power limits. -
There's also a slightly older version of the Clevo control centre available on the Metabox Australia website - just head to their drivers section and search for the P650RE - which does allow setting a somewhat custom fan profile, it's really basic and finicky, and it only lets you set the temperature at which the fans kick in and out and the maximum speed (can't go above 80%) but it may be better than nothing. -
Does anyone know which of the USB ports is the "powered" one? Just read over the specs: 4 x USB 3.0 ports (1 x powered USB port, AC/DC)

Should be the one next to the hdmi port with the icon of a battery next to it.

Is there any way to test how much power it outputs?
USB 2.0 usually maxes at 500mA and USB 3.0 around 900mA. -
This is probably a stupid question. But can you tell me what key you hit and when to power on and get into the bios of 8658? I either am pressing the wrong keys or the SSD is too fast and I can't get in. And if it is F2, do you just press F2 or need to hold the Function key and F2? Thanks.

If you computer is booting in to Windows and doesn't allow you to get in to the BIOS, it may be the fast boot that is the reason it goes so fast. Usually, if you turn on the computer, then press the power key again during the splash screen before windows, it would turn off the computer and then fast boot will be off the next time you start it up. Then you should be able to get in to the BIOS easier the next time the computer starts up.

You can also do an advanced shutdown in 8 and 10 to take you straight in.

I tried applying an XMP profile using XTU. After rebooting, my P650RG-G simply will not boot any more. It just powers up. That's it. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Have you tried removing the CMOS battery?

Hey all, was hoping someone on this forum would be able to help me out with a head scratcher I have been dealing with related to my Sager NP8657-S and an external Asus monitor. I currently have the Sager attached to the Asus monitor through DisplayPort connection and have the Asus display set to shut off after 30 mins of my lock screen slide show (just the monitor...I don't have the laptop going into sleep or hibernate). Over the last month or so, I notice now when the display wakes up, 99% of the time my mouse cursor is not on the desktop. I can float over top of the desktop and see icons highlighted so the mouse "functionality" is there. If I right click or click on any of the desktop icons, the mouse suddenly appears and works fine. I have done all kids of troubleshooting on this. This happens with both the DisplayPort and HDMI connections to the monitor. If I disconnect the monitor, I don't notice this behavior on the laptop display itself. It is something that is being triggered when the laptop sends the command to the external monitor to go to sleep. The bizarre thing is this only recently started happening. I uninstalled my Nvidia drivers and reinstalled and have the same issue. I turned off the Power Management stuff on the keyboard and USB mouse as well.
Has anyone ever seen this? The mouse stays active when it kicks on the slide show lock screen...I can see it. Then when it hits that 30 min trigger, the Asus screen goes black like it should. If it sits like that for more than a couple mins and I trigger it through moving mouse or hitting keyboard, the mouse cursor is gone.
Any thoughts? -

I am not sure...how do I turn select hybrid or dedicated?
-
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
You should be able to change that option in the BIOS of your computer.
-
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
Double post. sorry.
-
You can change between the two either in the Control Center software (need to restart the laptop after doing this) or in the BIOS (in which case you would have already restarted the laptop!!!).
EDIT - echoed part of Pat's reply at the same time of writing! -
Thanks...but where do I find the Control Center software? I see an icon for it in my system tray...when I right click on it, I only seen "OSD" with a checkbox next to it? It doesn't open anything?
-
nevermind...I didn't realize you had to double click it. I am testing it now.
-
so interestingly enough...on my first trial with having it on discrete, the mouse was there. Let me try it a few more times to be sure. What would be happening if this was the case? I don't want to leave it on the discrete because we use this for gaming.

Switch it back and update your intel IGP driver.
-
so it does indeed look like that was the problem. I have tried it again after 30 mins with no problems. I believe I have the latest Intel IGP driver for this machine. The one I show is version 20.19.15.4424 from 3/31/2016. If I am not having an issue with discrete mode, wouldn't this be an issue with NVIDIA instead? I know for a fact I have the latest NVIDIA drivers as I just installed those today.

Is worth a go if it still does it on the IGP, it was not clear if that still is happening for you. You don't have to be on the bleeding edge IGP driver if everything is working. -
Hi. New to this forum. Was wondering if anybody has had any experience upgrading a screen on a P650RG. Specifically, it came with the 1080p IPS display. Wanting know if there are any hurdles upgrading it to the Sharp 4K. Mostly, am I going to have to change display cables? And can this be done without soldering. I just ordered from Xidax. Haven't received it yet, so I can't check myself yet. I just want to know for future references.
Also, do I understand correctly that the CPU is soldered? I've seen photos that suggest otherwise.Last edited: Jun 10, 2016 -

The cpu is soldered yes, as for the screen then 1080p is the best for gaming, do you need the extra colour accuracy or pixels for anything in particular?

Remember to double check the screen connector on your motherboard, there are two formats in these laptops (edp vs lvds) depending on the screen.

Since you have a FHD display it could be either, but I do think the sharp 4k is edp.
You can open your laptop and have a look at the connector, comparing it to online description of edp and lvds. Or taking your screen references and checks what it has.Jedi1981 likes this. -
Just to be more clear, the exact model that I'm getting is the P650RG. I see posts that say that if you have a PCIE M.2, that you cannot use the other slot. Has anyone tried it though? Several resellers (including Xotic) actually give you the option to have a 950Pro along with a Sata M.2.

Those are early posts, you configure it how you like.

I ordered this with a 950 Pro NVME. I am also putting 2x 1tb 850 Evo's in the hard drive slots. I know that's already 2.5 TB of SSD storage, but if I could add an M.2 SATA SSD as well, then wow! At the same time, I don't want to order one, and the be unable to use it.Last edited: Jun 12, 2016 -
Does anyone know if there is a modded vBIOS for the P650RE3 (970M 3GB)? I've been trying to find one, but having no luck. I'm trying to remove the OC limit of +135MHz, since I'm sure I could go much higher, it's not even breaking a sweat right now with a 135/800 OC.
If a vBIOS doesn't exist for it, has anyone had any success using the Maxwell II Bios Tweaker tool? Most guides I've found are centred around baking in a new clock rather than unlocking the OC sliders, and they're all for desktop GPUs as well.
Thanks
Okay so I think I discovered something of vital importance: a vBIOS saved and edited while in MSHybrid mode should NOT be flashed to the GPU while in Discrete mode! I believe it has something to do with the UEFI code not being active in MSHybrid mode (and thus not saved through GPU-Z), and the computer requires the UEFI bits to allow it to boot with the computer - my laptop is now unable to boot into Discrete mode with the built-in screen, however I was able to remote into it, activate the card via device manager and managed to get an external monitor working.
Does anyone have a P650RE3 (the 970m 3GB of memory) and wouldn't mind sharing their UEFI bios? I'm fresh out of ideas now, and I've been trying to fix it all day.

Hey I'm considering buying the sager np8658s laptop, but I read some reviews and all of them said it had serious backlight bleeding problems. Is this true? Also, how is the touchpad on this model?

I'm 50 pages into this thread so far, and I'm near pulling the trigger on a P650RG with the 4K (with G-Sync) screen, I have a few unanswered questions.
- As far as the 4K screen: Does it have the same light bleed issues as the 1080p option? How are the viewing angles and black levels? I'd love to see a photo of display with a black screen in a dark room.
- How loud IS this thing? I've read conflicting reports for this; some posts in this thread said it was very difficult to impossible to hear, some said that loud fans in a laptop like this are a fact of life.

@Avuton Olrich Hi and welcome ;-)
- It depends in part which 4K panel it is. There are two available in this chassis, the Samsung LTN156FL02-L01 and the Sharp LQ156D1JW04. The Samsung officially supports G-Sync, it is a lot less expensive than the Sharp panel but it is RGBW (the more expensive Sharp panel is normal RGB) and so the colours and image quality of the Samsung panel can't compare to the Sharp. I couldn't really say if one panel has worse light bleed than the other, though it's a topic that often comes up. There's a difference between 1/ IPS panel light backlight bleed which can generally be seen as a light hase around the edge of the display and it's mainly seen with a dark/black background, high/100% brigntness and in a dimly lit or dark room. If you're using the laptop in this manner then at some point you'll hurt your eyes as having the panel turned up full in a dark room isn't particularly a good idea and 2/ what some people experience which is a more localised light bleed. The latter can be due to poor panel manufacturing quality, a badly fitting panel surround or pressure that's been applied to the lid or panel over time.
- noise, if you have a look on notebookcheck.net for XMG P506 you should find the P651RG review. Towards the bottom of the review is a section aptly titled "Emissions System Noise" where they compare it against an Alienware 15, Acer and Gigabyte models. On the Load Average and Load Maximum it comes out pretty well compared to the competitionPapusan, Avuton Olrich and Jedi1981 like this. -
Anyone know the best place to buy a 4k Screen, the Sharp one? The only place I can find them is on Eurocom's website for $427. I would like to find them cheaper.
