The control software should not impact the boot process. I would investigate if another setting has changed.

Well, the other one being that I switched from discrete to mshybrid. So I switched that back to discrete now. But no change.

Thanks for the response.. So let me get this straight.. Based on what you are saying, If I go with say 960 Pro my second m.2 slot becomes useless?

If this is is truly the case, then why are the laptop vendors allowing you to configure a 960 Pro in slot 1, and another SATA based m2 card on the slot 2? This doesn't make sense.

Just got my P650HS-G in a few days ago, getting used to everything as this is my first gaming laptop and first gaming rig in about 10 years.

I'm getting ~80C under load for both GPU and CPU (1070 & 7700HQ). These seem to be pretty high after seeing what some posted earlier in this thread.

I just undervolted the CPU by ~120mV and it seems stable (using ThrottleStop). I've chopped about 4C off of my CPU idle temps.

Haven't messed with the GPU yet....any tips? I'd like to OC it but with these temps I'm not so sure I'm comfortable doing that. If I can get my temps down I'd OC it.

Any guidance is appreciated, great info on this forum!

I've got the IC Diamond paste which I figured would help a bit.

I'm kind of confused as to why I've not experienced temps like I've seen in this and other threads.

At idle after undervolting CPU I'm sitting at 50C for GPU and 47C for CPU.

Though, as far as fan speeds go I've left CCC on the stock "Entertainment" setting until I start to get into long gaming sessions. That said, I will jack up the fan speeds to max just to see. I'm wondering if tlprtr19 had both the system fans and GPU fans cranked up when he reported his temps:

Those temps were with fan on auto. Fan speed used to increase with load.

However I recently uninstalled CCC because it was not switching to mshybrid. Once I reinstalled from Sager website the fan never increases now. I have to manually press Fn+1 for max speed. Also once I press the power button the Sager logo remains for few seconds. I hear a click sound after which OS boots normally.

I got the IC Diamond as well, temps were not that great compared to stock. I still reach about 80°C just a few seconds after starting a benchmark, about the same with stock. I changed to Kryonaut and GPU temps never surpass 75°C even after a few hours of gaming.
I think it's attributed to the application of the ICD paste by the factory rather than the paste itself. Instead of putting on the chip, they put a square paste on the heatsink. That's just my opinion tho...

i can only tell you what my reseller is telling his customers (on his website), have a look here and change the language to english in the top right corner.

    MYSN clearly states this:

    SSD
    1x m.2 2280 SSD via SATA-III or PCI-Express x4
    1x m.2 2280 SSD via SATA-III

Both m.2 slots can be operated as RAID 0/1 in SATA mode.
The second m.2 SSD slot may alternatively be used for a UMTS / LTE module.
When the first m.2 slot via PCI Express x4 is used, the second m.2 slot is deactivated. A combination of PCI Express SSD with a second m.2 SATA SSD or UMTS / LTE module is not possible.

another reseller in my country CEG tells the same here: (select Description)
    • Expand to MAX. Dual M.2 SATA SSD or one PCIe Gen3 x4 SSD
I cannot speak for other resellers or why they decribe it in any another way but in my opinion its simply not true for the P65xHS(-G) and P65xHPx(-G) Laptops because the M.2 PCIe device will eat up all the lanes so the SATA controller or even the 3G module is not connected and will not work. This refers to the BGA Variant (soldered CPU/GPU) with HM175 chipset, the socket CPU models do handle this in another way because they have Z170 chipsets. So if this is important for you its worth to have a look at the P75xDMx-G or P77xDMx-G series.

Interesting, I'm not sure I'm a fan of how that paste is applied. Either way, temps suck so I'm doing some heavy investigating.

Played BF1 for about an hour today settings completely maxed out, GPU fan at 80% and CPU fan at Max.

    Avg temps:
    CPU ~88C (Min ~85C Max 91C)
    GPU ~89C (Min ~86C Max 90C)

That's so far off what I was hoping to see. It's a bit disappointing to be honest because I was hoping to get some longevity out of this machine. May not get it if these will be the normal temps.

Going to run some actual benchmarks but there has to be a way to mitigate this, especially when others are experiencing much lower temps than I am. And I'm also running on a laptop cooler 24/7 w/ room temps around 21-22C.

Hopping on the Google machine to do some research.

Did some tweaking. Slightly OC'd the 1070 (which lowered the voltage from 775mV to 725mV) and I'm getting GPU 47-48C at idle.

Going to Heaven Benchmark to see what happens.

That is the stock application from CLEVO. And as far as i know CLEVO does not use IC Diamond, but i might be wrong.
Also, IC Diamond color usually is darker, anyone who ever tried IC Diamond will tell you.

Okay so using Obsidian (THANK YOU JOHN) I updated the Intel ME (Management Engine, I think) and after a restart everything is a bit better.

After 1hr of BF1 with all fans on high:
    GPU was averaging sub 80C
CPU was averaging very low 80s (didn't even get close to the 90s) (edit: -140.6mV undervolt)

This is MUCH better, though leaves me wanting more (or less in this case) :p but happy I was able to reduce temps from "definitely scary" to "I can deal with this".

Still thinking about changing my paste but we'll see. Packages take almost 2 weeks to get to my location so I have time to run this thing through the gamut. Also, I got 3D Mark so going to run plenty of tests to see how things hold up.

    Hi Guys,

The cooling issues I've heard about for this laptop are only due to improper pasting, right ? So, if I get it repasted by a reseller, I shouldnt face any other problems ?

    Thanks for the help :D

Well my P650HS is on the way but i have the P650SE and it gets hot, the 4720hq get to 80 (fan on auto and -70v on core) after a re paste with ic7 (mx4 and as7 doesnt do the job).

So it helps a good thermal paste and undervolt. If you see other laptops, they get similiar results (not gonna see 60c on load on cpu)

The rest of the laptop's build quality is fine ? (Keyboard especially, not heard great stuff about it)

Heating seems to vary build to build. But in mine with ICD paste heating is no issue. Fan curves were perfect before (no longer, have some issues after I reinstalled CCC).

Laptop build quality is top notch (very minimalistic and reserved aesthetics compared to bombastic and colorful MSI or alien). Laptop weight no issue (highly portable for its class of config) I have heard about keyboard before but I have no issues at all. Plenty of key depth, noise and I have a good typing speed. Setting up RGB colors np at all.

K, sounds awesome (except for the heat varying D:, that sounds scary).

Applying a skin to the top of the laptop wont have any adverse effect, would it ?

All laptop companies have the same issue with heat variation (alien, msi, asus, acer, lenovo etc.) So no worries, sometimes it's just pure luck. But Sager has a really good robust cooling system (2 fans for GPU and 1 dedicated fan for CPU). Cant get better than that . I dont use my laptop cooler (although I should ).

As long as the skin won't block the vents np.

Yep a precise square. I forgot to take a pic with my own unit, I was excited/scared becoz it was my first time to repaste. And I was also curious how XOTIC puts ICD on the chips, too much or too little. I opened it and that's when I realized they don't repaste like users do and just use a pre-cut square paste.
Before that I was happy becoz I thought my temps were great not going more than 80C. But got disappointed when I compared the temps to the same unit (Eluktronics) with stock paste and the temps were the almost exactly the same.

EDIT: Brand's Sager but my reseller is Xotic

Yea after some tweaks (and a re-paste in a couple weeks) I don't think heating will be an issue with mine anymore at all.

So to me, it seems somewhat fixable with this model, and that's coming from a gaming laptop noob!

For installing dual channel RAM (2 DIMMs), do we need to access the slot(s) under the keyboard? Or are the slots exposed by removing the back cover in different channels?

Also, what is the default RAM installed (specifically looking at the EVOC models)? CAS timings? Do they even matter?

I have 2x 4GB Dual Channel RAM and they are placed under the keyboard. The two slots under the back cover are still empty.

A general usage question: is it comfortable using on your lap for everyday tasks (i.e. doesn't roast you?

What about placing the notebook on a couch or bed? Do fans rev up/temps get out of control doing everyday tasks (web, video, documents etc)?

Hi! I just got my hands on my 8155 (1060 3Gb). I got a little problem with the screen, although it doesn't even have a trace of light bleed but the colors are bland and the texts are blurry. Already tried the color calibration and ClearType Text on the display settings but it didnt work. Looking on it just a couple of minutes gives me headache. Hoping someone could lend a hand. Thank you! : )

It does get warm on the underside, not hot. Areas near vent, speaker and right-middle side of the keyboard also get warm. Extended gaming can make it hot at ambient temp of more than 21C.

Got a couple BSODs today. One when I was running 3D Mark Time Spy, One not long after that doing nothing, and one right after I closed out of a game.

Backed off all my undervolt and OC settings just to see if it clears that up. Hopefully with the new Intel driver the temps stay down.

For those interested, on NP8157 / Clevo P650HS-G, I've contacted the vendor and got the scoop. The two M.2 slots (1 pciex4, and 1 sata) are completely INDEPENDENT. Meaning, if you install Samsung 960 Pro on slot 1 (pcie x4), then second M.2 slot does NOT deactivate as posted by others here. This means you CAN have Samsung 960 Pro at full x4 speed and also have another M.2 SATA drive on the second slot (max SATA speed).

This is why the vendors actually allow you to configure slot 1 with pcie / nvme card, and another M.2 SATA card on slot two. I hope this helps.

You'll always see blurry text in parts of the OS, like Device Manager. These portions - and other legacy apps - weren't designed with the same modern display APIs that most applications now use, so when the system scales them up, it scales the bitmap instead of being able to cleanly resize a vector image/pattern and upsize text.

Your eyes are fine, and you don't have a display issue.

@k0nane Sorry I did not know that. This is my first win 10 pc, so yeah. Regarding the bland colours, I somehow managed to calibrate using the display settings.

@Meaker@Sager I also tried down and upscaling it sir but to no avail.

No I switched back to discrete yesterday. No change. Sager logo still stays for some seconds before OS boot.

Awesome, thanks for the help dude. Any specific reseller which builds better Clevos or has better pastes which I should order from ? I was presently thinking about HIDEvolution, for the Prema bios

That would be a good choice. I have been hearing a lot about the quality of HID systems.
