Driver update won't affect vBIOS. Overclocking is enabled regardless of vBIOS since 347.88

    This may be very random...

I got my 8652 today and started it up.
However instead of the windows 8 login I was expecting, I was greeted with a prompt to setup windows 7 ultimate.
That wasn't even on the OS choice list during configuration!

I'm not necessarily upset, as I plan to upgrade to windows 10 when it comes out anyway (and I suppose this will get me the 'ultimate' equivalent version), but did anyone else get an OS mixup like this? (I also didn't the Witcher 3 voucher, and contacted Xotic about that).

Edit: To make matters even stranger, the recovery disk included was for Windows 8.1

SERIOUS WIFI ISSUES, NEED SOME HELP.

i have a brand new XMG P505 with a dual band wireless ac 7265.

the wifi is constantly dying in a weird way. it still says im connected and that the signal is excellent but it doesnt work. when i reboot the computer it works again. this is absolutely unacceptable. every single torrent i was downloading died at some point.

any ideas what can be causing this?

    thanks.

Try different drivers. I had the same problem with another laptop. Some drivers worked fine while others would drop the signal. Also from Intel.

Does anyone know about the ACPI.sys thread using CPU after going on battery? Can someone at least try and see?

The Windows 7 Ultimate you saw was probably a factory test validation version. They loaded it and booted it up to make sure everything was fine and dandy. That version may or may not prompt you to reactivate after a period of time. The tech that set up your laptop should have reloaded the laptop with the correct version that you ordered but he/she might have forgotten to do that.

Do you have any preference in looks/styling, compartments, zipper versus velcro, etc?

Personally, I will be using my Thule 15 Inch Sleeve (though I imagine it will be a very tight fit. I will confirm later today when it arrives.) until I find something similar to this 17 inch "case". I use the 13 inch version with my Yoga and it is exactly what I need.

I thought the current Nvidia drivers only allow overclocking up to +135Mhz GPU / +500Mhz vRAM - I'm pretty sure some P650 owners on here have overclocked their GPU by +200Mhz or more using the Prema vBios

Oh I see what you mean, yes there was a period when Nvidia lost their minds and prevented any overclocking, but that's thankfully over, hopefully for good!

Probably too small, you probably need to be looking at 15.6" screens, but not even all those fit

Wish our P65aSx machines had come with a sleeve that fits properly, like MSI supply with their GS60 machines

It says: Laptop Compartment Dimensions 15.25"(w) x 12"(h)
    Our laptop is: 15.16" (w) x 10.67" (d) x 1.13" (h)

So it should work technically, right?

I bought a Targus Neoprene sleeve off Amazon for £7.80 (Inc VAT & Delivery). Quite happy with it.

I was just looking for something cheap on Amazon and was very disappointed that very few sleeves actually listed the internal dimensions. The Targus was one of the few. 396mm x 270mm x 33mm btw.

Either Pink with Black text/stitching or (as it's reversible) Black with Pink text/stitching. No prizes for guess which way around I have it! ;)

Note: It also came with a free wired mouse. very plastic & crappy.

+135 is a vBIOS not driver limit. That's why flashing a modded vBIOS unlocks it.

It's just that with the overclocked locked drivers unlocking the bios did nothing to the available clocks.

How snug is the fit (bearing in mind your P650SG is a bit thicker than my P651SE) and is it a zipless design? Most sleeves I've looked at are either too small or far too loose. I currently have a Lenovo sleeve, it's a very snug fit, but has zips and as it's so snug a fit, there's a risk of scratching the laptop with the zips, unless you're very careful.

Im getting terrible gta:v performance and I suspect it's because of my drivers.

I dont want to upgrade to 350.12 as I've read mixed reports that it does block overclocking (im currently unblocked on 345.20).

Can someone please confirm whether or not 350.12 blocks overclocking or not?

I don't know, but you could try it and revert back if necessary, as Nvidia still has their older drivers available

BTW - does anyone here bother with Mvidia GeForce experience? I'm happy with updating the Nvidia drivers manually myself, but wondered if using GeForce experience actually helps with some games, or whether it just adds more bloat to the system? Thanks

Not a massive issue, since with an SDD it takes barely any time to boot, though I guess any unnecessary slow down is annoying

Does it GeForce Experience actually help at all in terms of optimising performance, at least for the titles that it says it does this for? If not, I'm quite happy to remove it from my system...

It just applies a set of pre-tested configurations for those unsure how best to tweak their games.

I have it because it lets me stream games to my shield.

    Bear with me on this...

I have this USB disk. It freezes the BIOS screen.

The USB stick is partitioned into three parts: One parition for miscellaneous drivers, one partition for a Windows 7 Boot Key, and one partition for an Ubuntu Boot Key. It has been working fine for the past year and a bit for whichever purpose I wished, but attempting install Windows 7 last night "broke" my BIOS.

With the USB stick plugged in, the laptop will boot into the logo screen, and then freeze. No F keys work, no ctrl+alt+delete. The only way out is to hold the power button down...unless I removed the USB, in which case the BIOS would move forward to the corresponding key(s) pressed. If I went to boot options and plugged the USB back in, it restart the computer.

I recreated the issue on all three USB ports.

I plugged the USB into another computer, and it thought that all three partitions were corrupt and recommended to scan and fix them. Lo and behold, some errors were found. So I said to heck with it, wiped the entire USB key, and recreated just two partitions: a Windows 7 Boot Partition and a miscellaneous drivers partition. I plug it in to the P650SE again, and it begins the same freezing process as above.

I ended up installing Windows 8 from another boot key and was able to access all partitions of the USB drive from the desktop without issue.

What on earth could be going on??

It's zipless. Soft and ''foamy'. I could try and put into words how snug a fit it is (not tight, but not floppy... just right!) but I'll cut to the chase and say I'd be surprised if you were disappointed with it given it's low cost. Get one!

Shouldn't be loose in the true sense of the word. You'll be happy I'm sure.

There is enough room that you can leave the mini-USB dongles on (for Wireless mice/gamepads etc) without worrying about them.

All it does is automatically change graphical settings to what it thinks is optimal for your system specs. It does nothing you can't already do yourself.

Guys I noticed something about my P650SE: The fans for the GPU work even when the GPU isn't used at all. They spin very slow, and I can only hear them when I put my ear close to them and I can feel the cold air coming out of the back. Is this normal? I don't use the Hotkey app btw.

Second question is: I formatted my harddrive and installed a new 8.1, installed all the drivers and suddenly when I plug in my headphones to the rightmost jack, I get no sound. I can only get sound from the optical out. Can I change this, or is there really no difference?

Third and last: I'm starting to feel like my harddrive got slower. I have the 750 GB WD Black. After I restart the system, the time for the hardrive usage to get to 0% from 100% is about 4-5 minutes(I check it from the CPU working time). That's a little long isn't it? As I said I just formatted the drive, so nothing unnecessary installed there. Should I RMA it?

I have searched a lot of 15.6 sleeves, but most of them won't fit. I'd rather go for a tight fit than 17'' sleeves since I don't want my laptop to fall out easily. Here's one I found which looks promising

Case Logic VLS-116 16-Inch Laptop Sleeve
The SLAPPA Ballistix PTAC Matrix Sleeves seems very nice but a little expensive.
Does your sleeve fit tightly or loosely? Will it slip out of the sleeve easily if the opening is not secured? Thanks!

This wasn't the case for me- most fit. One thing to note is the back of the screen has a lot of flex. When holding it in a soft sleeve, you'll bend the screen. I've noticed that sometimes after moving it/carrying it, there is a change in where the backlight bleed is coming from. Nothing serious, but worth noting. This is the only minor issue with this laptop I have.

I've got a 90W adapter (right size 2.5 x 5.5) which I want to use. If I disable the dGPU, and use throttlestop- should the system stay under 90W?

90W?! There is the possibility that current is so low the system won't even detect it, so it won't charge.

Well, you know the best solution... Test it. But before, make your system power savvy as much as possible, to make sure not to fry the adapter: begin with power saver mode, igpu activated, no Wi-Fi/low brightness etc... And if you can, check how much you are using from the wall plug with a kill a watt device prior to plug the 90W adapter.

But as octiceps noted, be prepared to the eventuality of nothing happening...

Yes I'm concerned about frying the adapter (or damaging my laptop- is it possible?).

I don't have a kilowatt device to measure.

My aim is to improve battery too. Currently I'm stable using -111mV and x8 Multiplier (yes- 0.8Ghz). Is this going to reduce my power consumption a lot? Is it possible to disable turbo boot in XTU (it's grey'd out for me)?

I'd be very surprised if this worked, that's half the power of the 180 Watt PSU that shipped with my P651SE! I've heard of some success using the relatively compact Razer 150 watt PSU, at least when not overclocking, but not of lower-rated PSUs. I'd be interested in getting a Razer 150 watt PSU myself for travelling, but they don't ship them to the UK :-(

Could someone check while on battery if their System process has high CPU load? Takes 1 minute, I would really like the feedback!!
