Depends on panel manufacturer, I have the AUO 1.2 and the response rate is fine for me, even though I can see the difference between the refresh rates right up to 120hz 2ms screens. Replacing a panel, as long as the cable is the same type, is a relatively cheap procedure if you can't live with it. Does the other ips fhd panel (lg?) has a lower refresh rate?

(Edit) As linked above, there are different measures, so just be sure which measure is used.

The pursuit of the very best will have trade offs. If you plan to use the laptop with a super high quality screen the maybe the batman is a better bet with its 120hz output?

Undervolting a CPU should automatically decrease current draw. The i7-4710MQ on my W230SS was current-throttled almost in all moderately demanding situations, so I undervolted the core to -30 mV, and jacked up the clocks to 3.7 GHz max. Absolutely no throttling any more. P=I^2R, V=IR. I goes down because V goes down, heat goes down too.

Same problem here on my P670SG, happens randomly on TF2, Far Cry 4 etc.
Although for me it says "SynTP.sys", and if I uninstall the TouchPad driver, then it says "HKKbdFltr.sys".

I have just updated the BIOS again to see if it helps.

Thanks to both of you. From what I can see on Panelook, the AUO panel looks quite good (Also thank you for that explanation on response times, bernie). Is there no way to tell which panel you will receive with this clevo, since people seem to be getting both AUO and LG panels for the FHD IPS option?

Both seem to be good. You're sorted as long as the reseller states they offer a fhd ips panel. You can check hardware spec to be sure when it arrives and you can also ask the reseller to confirm panel model. As far as I know, Xmg and Pc specialist offer the AUO fhd ips.

Thank you. I'll probably be ordering a Sager from XoticPC. I asked what the model was, but everyone here seems to be happy with both, so I'm not worried now.

Do you have dual channel memory? Are you achieving those clocks? Have you increased the current limit?

That's what I'm trying to figure out, my brother has the exact same laptop as me and he doesn't have the problem at all.
It doesn't seem to be overheating, I tried formatting and reinstalling all drivers.

Just updated the BIOS to latest version today so will see how it goes.

No, I only have 1 stick of DDR3 8GB RAM. Yes, I do hit 3.7 GHz on single core clocks. I increased the current limit to 71 A.

I found a lot more proccesor heat is generated when upgraded to dual memory. What is the 4710's original current limit as my 4720's is 71A?

    That's not strictly true.

    Current = Amps

    Power = Watts

Voltage....well this one is pretty self explanatory.

The processor is TDP(power) restricted and current restricted.

    Power = Voltage x Current

If your processor has a maximum TDP of 47 watts and you are TDP throttling what you are basically doing by undervolting is actually allowing it to draw more current(amps) before reaching the power limit(by making the voltage in the above equation smaller)

    A simplified example : 47W = 1V x 47A
    When undervolted by 100mV : 47W = 0.9V x 52.222A

But if your current limit is 51 A then you will be current trottled by that value.

This is just a simplified example...not the rral values for this processor.

Sadly in this way(by increasing the number of amps it draws before reaching the TDP limit) you are reaching the current limit...

P.S. no throttling in moderately challenging situatons does not mean "no throttling"

Try out XTU benchmark or prime95 small fft test and see if you indeed have no throttling

Don't forget that consumption also rises with rising temps... ;)

Negative. The current across a electrical device ALWAYS depends on voltage, because V = IR. The CPU doesn't dissipate constant power just because P = IV. They are not inversely related.

If you reduce the p.d. across the processor, the current falls, while the resistance stays constant. Hence the power dissipation of the processor is also reduced. Experimental evidence shows this - my own CPU is current-throttled by an increasingly smaller percentage as the voltage offset is increasingly more negative. All this while leaving the clock speed approximately constant by applying a constant 100% load.

The actual formula for CPU power dissipation, given that it is a periodic device, is P = C(V^2)f, where C is capacitance, V is the potential difference across the CPU, and f is the clock frequency. So, my point stands - reduce the voltage, and you kill two birds with one stone: both current and thermal throttling. That's because you can reach higher clocks (i.e. f) before P exceeds a certain value.

You are mistaken in your assumption that R is constant....R changes with temperature.

That's why @Prema was right in what he was saying above that consumption increases with temps.

P.S. Unrelated to the above quoted message, another mistake you are making is that you consider all loads to be equal in nature and only vary by percentage of CPU used.

You are saying that you have no throttling anymore @ -30mV undervolt wich I can guarantee is false.

There are certain loads that put aditional stress on the CPU .... that's why a processor throttles under prime 95 and doesn't throttle in other applications that make 100% usage on the CPU.

Indeed. But I said resistance was constant because we are reducing voltage to reduce current and power dissipation. A conductor has roughly constant resistance with a small change in temperature, provided the average temperature is relatively low (in the case of a processor, usually less than about 75°C). Hence @Prema is certainly correct (he must be, or else he wouldn't be able to develop Prema Mod, best thing ever).

By certain loads you probably mean instructions such as SSE or MMX right?

Cause they do indeed load the CPU very different, depending on how you do it.

    So what uses the most?
    funny question, answered here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12715461/what-cpu-instructions-use-the-most-power

Intel XTU's Stress Tests use Prime95 to load the CPU. How do I know? Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Extreme Tuning Utility\Binaries\ and you will see p95_bench.exe. Which is quite obviously Prime95. The load averages about 98%, and oscillates between 96-100% with a period of about two seconds.

As far as Intel's reporting is concerned, I get zero power limit throttling, zero current throttling and zero current limit throtting. Is there some other form of t hrottling that isn't reported by the sensors?

I ran a stress test with my overclocked, current-limit-increased, voltage-reduced setup, as well as changing back to the default settings, which can be seen as a sudden spike in current limit throttling (the dark blue line) in the picture below.

Besides that, the processor never throttled. The picture proves it.

Sigh...wouldn't it be easier for you to run either xtu BENCHMARK (not Stress Test) or actual PRIME95 small fft with 8 workers to see your CPU throttle than to make dubious assumptions?

If you want to prove your point...theb do it....otherwise your point is mute.

There are already 7 people here(including me) that proved that while the CPU doesn't throttle under XTU stress test it does throttle under xtu benchmark and prime95

Nope, still no throttling. No need to be so condescending. I ran both the XTU benchmark and am currently running the Prime95 Small FFT 8 Worker benchmark, and while I accept that either of them stress the CPU a lot more than the XTU Stress Tests, I see at maximum 3-4% throttling, and very very occasionally. Once again, no need to be so condescending.

The 980m in my Sager NP8652 has the same vbios as the one you listed (84.04.1F.00.E1).

Also, would there be any way to set fan profiles in BIOS? The control center software doesn't let the fans get very fast at high temperatures even when using the custom profile and the automatic profile is way to loud at idle.

I concur! It really doesn't work very well, I have problems playing GTA V, because the fan keeps low speeds and then the GPU starts to throttle. Anyone has a silent, but still functioning at high load profile?

Hello all, I'm a soon to be owner of a Sager NP8652-S/Clevo p650sg laptop. Very very excited, should be here tomorrow. Anyways, I don't have much time to go through all of the post here because I'm trying to study for finals, but some things I am hearing is that the computer throttles? I have a GTX 980m 4gb and a i7-4720HQ. Is the throttling because of heat?? I saw Wingnut's review on the np8652 with the 3k screen and that is the reason i bought the laptop, because he said there was no throttling issue.

hold on hold on hold on.

    I think I missed the part where somebody got a P65xSx with a non-throttling 47x0HQ CPU

    WHERE

Have you got it to sustain over 47W for let's say... 5 minutes? And if so, have you gotten it to sustain over 58W for ~5 minutes without throttling?

Did this happen with Prema's latest BIOS mod for this machine?

I haven't gotten my laptop yet so I don't know, I'm new to the forums and was just wondering if I should expect throttling with my cpu... I don't know much about computers, I just wanted to nice laptop for games and school, now I'm worried about my choice in laptop.

I guess you answered my question. So this is happening with all the P62xSx machines? So should I download Prema's BIOS mod? I guess I'm going to have to go through all the post to see what I should do when I get my laptop, there are just so many posts that I'm going to have to find some time to go through them. BTW I am not planning to overclock the CPU or GPU anytime soon.

Don't worry...throttling is not due to heat and it is VERY VERY MINOR. It goes down from 3.4GHz to 3.2GHz under EXTREME loads.

As I said it's not due to heat but due to the default power restrictions to this CPU.

You have no reason to regret buying this laptop.

As an added bonus Prema promised that his next mod will fix this issue.

As -Jinx- said above, don't worry about that. If you're just planning to game and do schoolwork, you'll be fine. My questions were aimed at more... hardcore... users XD. The cooling on these machines are fine for the most part. You didn't make a bad choice, don't worry.

As the others are pointing out, the cooling solution is good.
Actually in my experience it is the best cooling I've ever seen in any laptop. It's 25/29 mm and it has high-end i7 + 970m/980m inside it with almost no throttling. Are you kidding me? It's godlike cooling!
Mine is used mostly for studies, programming and such and I never hear the fans ever. When I game I don't hear any heavy noise either.

However the HotKey program is a hit and miss at best, it really annoys the crap out me, with half working solutions for controlling the fan, anyone has a strong solution for fan control? :D

    My laptop just arrived today!

But I am wondering what extra start up programs I can remove with out messing things up.
    For example:
    X-Fi
    Realtek
    Flexikey
    Hotkey

    And so on.
I don't prefer to have lots of back ground programs of I don't need them.

Sound Blaster X-Fi and Realtek - sound. You need them. X-Key and Hotkey Utility - for the keyboard shortcuts and other miscellany. You also need them.

It's honestly not as bad as an off-the-shelf laptop that comes with ~50 GB of bloatware.

I don't have the SB X-Fi installed at the moment and the audio works fine, I think it just enables some fancier fuctions.
I also think that you can remove the Hotkey Utils: they display a small messages when you press the fn keys, but their driver should be in the chipset.

I am having an issue with the (italian) keyboard: when I'm pressing left ctrl+A it does not record right arrow. Tested both in win8.1 and linux. I can press a lot of keys at once (even more than three) but not those three.

W/o X-Fi, no virtual surround (SBX Pro Studio) if you're gaming with headphones. Big deal IMO.

Depends on the headset. Astro A50's come with a mixamp so I always have 7.1 Virtual Surround Sound regardless of the machine. I'm waiting for my Munitios though...

Yeah but those of us who care about audio quality don't use gaming headsets ;)

Depends on the headset but you will find a lot of high end audio really is mostly placebo. Then again I have met many audio engineers who don't mind meeting those requirements since they get paid :D

Just try listening to high quality music using any monitor/studio headphones where the instruments are suddenly distinct and well seperated.

Is there a big difference between the Sager 8652 from Xoticpc or LPC-Digital and the Mythlogic DIA 1614 with 980m?

Spec'd out the price is the exact same and they look similar but not sure if the build quality between the two is different or if one is better than the other.

Of the 3 vendors since the price is the same what is my best bet for after sale support in case something happens?
