Love my new p650sg, but I am having problems with dota lag spikes (fps is fine, barely gets this machine to sweat). Someone else mentioend this problem so idk if they ever found a fix? Some quick impressions are that build quality is pretty good especially compared to my msi gx640. Hinge is quite strong, lid has a bit of flex but it seems fine/part of design. Definitely seems like it can survive a while.

Which wireless card do you have?
Can you run XTU in the background and see if the spikes correspond to either a spike in current throttling or drop in processor frequency?

So i know nothing about modding. Is it a requirement to get the most out of the GPU or will I still be able to enjoy modern games at high graphics just fine?

Also my set up includes a 250gb crucial ssd and a 1 TB HDD. Windows is installed on the SSD naturally. Where should I install programs and games from Steam? On the SSD or the regular HDD? Thanks!

For the screen I got the AUO Optronics model AUO12ED or B156HAN01.2 not sure which is the model number there. is that an LED?

I just got it from mythologic so I assume its updated. I have a killer 1525 which for everything else seems to rock. The lag is just brief disruptions of connection, fps is completely stable. A quick Google suggests its a common dots problem. I messed around with some settings in killer software which seemed to help but I guess I'll do more substantive tests later. Any recommendations for good new action RPG games like skyrim/stalker/etc?

You don't need to do anything to the machine to have great performance in most games.
I have same setup just Evo 850 250GB
I have all my programs on my SSD, also steam including GTA 5 + Heavy programs like Matlab(14GB), Office 2013(??) and so on.
I don't have any space problems, but of course if I had a million games in Steam I would need to use the HDD.

I use HDD for backup of images, movies, data (I work with Computer Vision), but else I would be fine with only the SSD.

I think the Screen from AUO can either be LED or TN so it's really hard to know.

I got the TN 1080p version from AUO and I am very happy about it!

Thank you. Although honestly I do not even know what the difference is between a TN and a LED display.I just hope that the manufacturer really did put what I paid for.

Another question for you or for anyone. Since the battery is technically non removeable, how do you use the laptop when gaming heavily? do you leave it plugged in to ensure proper power. Noticed it works better when plugged naturally as it has more power to gobble.

I'm not expert but TN and LED correspond to two different classifications.

LED is a backlight technology. It refers to the way the screen is lit. In this case, by Light Emitting Diodes. CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light) was common some years ago.

TN (Twisted Nematic) is a denomination regarding how the crystal molecules move in the screen. An alternative to that could be IPS (In-Plane Switching).

    Hope this helps!

Hansung is great. A bunch of repair centers located throughout SK.

My W650SJ had problems with the GPU and they fixed it within a day (northern Gwangju).

I'm thinking of getting a slimmer and more powerful psu to see if I can mitigate current throttling when both the cpu and gpu are active. I hear the Dell is recommended at 19.5v, can anyone who has this, please comment on their current throttling experienced while benchmarking under XTU and 3D Mark?

TN is faster but smaller view angle, LED is the future...

Eh the battery should stay put I would say. It's located far away from any heat, so you won't have battery wear or anything like that.

The battery performance on mine was really poor on Win8, while that was an ACPI issue, Win7 gave me 1.5 hours more battery life.

The CPU will throttle automatically to 1.6 or 1.45 ghz depending on i7 model and that is fixable by ThrottleStop.

The GPU will throttle in FPS to 30 fps in geForce Experience, but this can be adjusted, I use 60 fps.

I can play medium games just fine, but heavy gaming is not something I want to do on battery. I sometimes run some really heavy multi threaded MatLab simulations and such, but the CPU nor the battery seems to be bothered other than I have a drop in battery life.

Btw mine says 2-4 % battery wear which I consider very normal.

While I raised the current limit during my cpu testing, my changes have only been modest and for testing purposes. Haven't been able to find out the safe upper limit for general use as the gpu is added into the equation.

You're right that raising the current limit, along with undervolting, does help with current throttling. I have conducted numerous tests and current limit is my hurdle atm.

A cheap fast OLED replacement with good colour accuracy would be nice.

Edit: What would be a good measure (benchmark/stress test) for establishing cpu behaviour under general use i.e. cpu orientated gaming and processing?

I've been using XTU's stress test and benchmark to assess the cpu response, but I wonder if there is a better alternative. I haven't used Prime95 because I hear the stress induced is fairly unrealistic.

Does anybody have a suggestion for a good 230W adapter I can get instead of the stock one provided? it gets really hot with 980m. I have a 5.5 mm adapter plug on my laptop so having trouble finding one

180W is the highest rating with that tip as standard unless you use an adapter or mod the cable.

I have an odd question. I just bought a new wifi-card (only one that is OSX compatible) and its' the BCM4352HMB. It is mini-PCIE.

Is there any way to connect a mini-PCIe card to this laptop?

Does anyone know why my GPU indicator stays turned on even when the dedicated GPU isn't in use? The Nvidia GPU indicator in my taskbar is greyed out and states zero programs are using the Nvidia GPU so the indicator on the chassis should be turned off, but it stays on anyway. Anyone know what I have to do to get this to reflect the GPU that is in use more accurately? I got this laptop without windows and installed the OS myself so it is possible i could be missing something, but I have installed the hotkey utility that allows fan control as well as the motherboard drivers and everything else that seemed relevant from the driver download page.

I'm having a weird glitch with SYSTEM process overloading the CPU up to sometimes 50+% when I'm downloading something or specifically using Steam. I tried to download a game and for about 2-3 minutes the entire PC was unusuable because system process was at 100%.

I've read somewhere this is due to hardware interrupt problem, but I can't figure out what hardware might be causing this and how to solve it. I'm guessing it's a driver problem with one of the components, potentially LAN or WiFi (although it happens on both) but no idea how to solve.

Does anybody know why I'm having this strange problem?

Hmm it seems MSI afterburner was causing the indicator to be on, but I don't know if this means the GPU was actually on, as MSI afterburner shows that the discrete GPU usage and clocks are 0% most of the time, which I took to mean that it was not enabled.

Some people experienced something like that using the Clevo HotKey utility. If you are using it try uninstalling it.

They all show 0% usage but they use it themselves. They even cause some heat to be generated :D

On the back of the laptop- unscrew the two screws with the keyboard logo (they are slightly longer screws). There is another keyboard logo which doesn't have a screw in it. Put a phillips head screw driver in that to 'push' the keyboard off. Once you hear it 'pop' out, open it up and remove the rest of the keyboard. Pretty easy. While you there- might be an idea to move you ram from the back of the device. I did this, so that when I upgrade in future, I don't have to go through the whole process of removing the keyboard again.

Is there any way to get more precise fan control without flashing the BIOS? I don't want to void my warranty, but I would like to be able to have the 970m fans turn off when it is using integrated graphics.

@Praedaedae, nice numbers, thank you for sharing.

I think you will have better temps just by lifting a bit your laptop (even with two bottle caps under rear foots).

Did you experience any driver shutdown and recovery? This happens regularly to me when Ocing, and I think also to Lone Syndal.

Hey guys. I started getting SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION BSODs for the past few days when trying to start up EVGA Precision or HWinfo64 but no problems when playing games(Actually I only have GTA V installed). I looked it up and seems like some users have this problem too but I couldn't find enough information. I tried reinstalling my NVIDIA drivers and I haven't got any BSODs from EVGA P. or HWinfo until today. Again no problem when playing GTA V, but when starting EVGA P. and HWinfo.

I am using the latest 350.12 and I am uploading the dump files here. Also the report from WhoCrashed is here:

    Error: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
    file path: C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
    description: NT Kernel & System
Bug check description: This indicates that an exception happened while executing a routine that transitions from non-privileged code to privileged code.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

    Conclusion
6 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 350.12 , NVIDIA Corporation)

If no updates for these drivers are available, try searching with Google on the names of these drivers in combination the errors that have been reported for these drivers and include the brand and model name of your computer as well in the query. This often yields interesting results from discussions from users who have been experiencing similar problems.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

Does anyone know how to disable the Sound Blaster X-Fi splash screen on startup? I would like the application to still run, but I don't want to see the splash screen every time.

Thank you. I also think lifting the rear will help a bit but I did want to use the same test environment as in my non-OC-tests to have a better comparison. I will try that out, maybe it helps keeping the fan-noise down. I don't worry about the temps at 80 °.
Now that you mentioned it, I did have a driver shutdown a couple of month ago when I did some brief OC-tests but can't remember at what clocks. During all my recent tests it did not happen once. There might also be some headroom left in GPU OR graphics-memory OCing, I didn't try to go higher on them separately yet.

I noticed while playing Diablo 3 that my CPU temps had a max of 79 -84 between all four cores. This was with the fan on max and a laptop cooler. Are these ok gaming temps or are they too high? GPU temps though did not even reach 70 degrees Celsius.

Bottle cap level (soft drink screw cap) is about where you get all the benefit from.

Any idea if that would void the Sager warranty? Would it be easy to reverse the mod prior to sending it in for warranty service? Of course, there is the possibility that it breaks in such a way that I would be unable to flash it back before sending it in...

It will not void the warranty in the sense that you will loose all coverage on all parts. But any issues that may be caused by doing so is not covered.

I would say your temps are fine. Obviously the lower the better, but the CPU temp is alright and the GPU temp is good.

Hey, I was wondering if anybody from this thread or somebody who actually owns one of these devices (especially from Canada) could weight in on this thread posted in the Alienware forums (link below). I've gotten feedback from Alienware owners but not many Sager/Clevo owners. Don't mean to spam or anything, just want some alternate opinions before I make my purchase :) .

Okay, well the adaptive brightness issue definitely stems from the Hotkey app. There is no way to disable it unfortunately. This is really annoying and would appreciate if Clevo/Sager got rid of it altogether.

Just noticed my laptop automatically keeps adjusting the contrast when I tab in and out certain full screen games. Anyone have a solution?

Adaptive brightness within Windows and display power saving for Intel is disabled.

No solution I've been able to find on the internet. It happens with a lot of machines, apparently. Unsure if Windows 8 issue or what.
