Coil whine is going to vary machine to machine due the number of variables that contribute to it. It's likely that some will have it and some will not.

Is it possible to upgrade the integrated keyboard to something more "gaming"? Some certains combinations of 3+ keys do not work (tested with both Linux and win) and it is very annoying. Not sure if it's my Italian layout...

We haven't seen any alternate options. You could hook up a USB keyboard when feasible.

will undervolting the cpu provide a significant power boost for the cpu? if so whats a good safe cpu undervolt value- -60mv?

also read in some forum that the newest intel xtu is clunky/buggy to use. is it safe using the most recent version or am i better off reverting to an older one?

An undervolt being stable varies chip to chip. The only way is to personally validate each setting.

Finally got my Sager NP8652-S from XoticPC!
Such an upgrade from my Lenovo y50! I had it for 3 months before I resold it and moved onto this P650SG.
    I'm a much happier man!

I am let down on two things... No Witcher 3 code? I was under the impression XoticPC still had codes left? And I requested twice to have the HDD set as the main Drive and the OS installed on there. (Boot time means nothing to be!) The SSD at 128Gs, is filling up fast with the OS on there! :( !

    But wow, what an upgrade!
Literally still on my first hour with this machine, still installing all the overclock/undervolt/benchmark tools to get the fun started!

XoticPC if you see this would you mind contacting me about The Witcher 3 codes? I need new games, hah.

You can reinstall your OS on your HDD if you want, though that is a legitimate complain. I think Sager is skimping on QA a little too much these days... I'm going to have to start telling people to avoid them even if they pay a little more cash, if they don't clean up their act.

Anyway, if you feel like leaving the OS on your 128GB SSD, you can disable your hibernation file to get back some space. Run command prompt as an administrator and type
    powercfg -h off

and then restart and it should work. If the "-h off" doesn't work, google other ways to write the command (as there are a few). But make sure you run CMD as an admin.

It's not just boot up and shut down tasks too though, it's general windows processing tasks, opening up your browser etc etc.

It speeds up everything windows based.

As long as you flash it back to stock BIOS when sending in for RMA, they won't bat an eyelash.

Of course, if you brick the board you'll pay to fix it.

Note: it is a flat out clear breach of warranty to use it on any of prema's partnered shops, and they *WILL* kill your warranty on your whole system if they find out you touched the system BIOS. vBIOS they don't care.

So I began playing with Linux on my p650sg... And it looks that the AC1525 card problem is still around.

After googling for a while I think it is not supported yet, anyone could confirm this here?

im having some lag in a few games. read somewhere here that the newer bios fixes that- is that the bios or vbios that fixes the lag issue?

also, i bought my machine from a local reseller who uses his own branded bios. is there a way to extract that bios to reflash it later, if needed?

    Hey thanks for the info!

Yea, it was a real let down when I booted it up and saw it with the OS on it...
But thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't considered it, but I'll probably re install it on the HDD.

I'm a patient man when it comes to that kind of stuff, BUT I can NOT stand micro stuttering and non internet lag. Which I've found HDDs to be the cause of. So I was hoping to have all 120GB for video games.

The BIOS... I cannot confirm. You would need to ask users here.

Yes, it is possible to extract and save the BIOS. @LunaP knows how to do it, you can ask her (or she can reply here)

Just came here to tell everyone that at least for me (with P651SG, GTX 980M) the updated BIOS (1.03.07) and EC (1.03.04) fixed all the lag issues I was experiencing in games (mainly GTA V). It runs butter smooth now, so now I'm ready for The Witcher 3 tomorrow :D

I got the BIOS update files by emailing my reseller (BTO) and flashed using a usb device and freedos (using Rufus, http://rufus.akeo.ie), no issues whatsoever. I didn't backup my original bios though.

It's not a "problem", we are simply missing the firmware. I'm inscribed to the ath10 mailing list and there is a lot of activity going on. There exists now an experimental version which has been reported to work, hopefully it will be merged in the kernel soon.

In general this pc works very well with Linux. The only things I have not been able to properly operate are the wireless with the AC1525 and the fingerprint reader.

The fans (both cpu and gpu) scale wonderfully for me, completely silent at low loads they kicks in with very good progression. I didn't have to tweak anything, just a plain install of Arch (so pretty much updated software compared with other distros).

I'm on Ubuntu 15.04, so I think the kernel is up to date, maybe not as much as yours though. My fans are in fact really silent, scaling good too, but I would like in fact to make them spin a bit faster, because it seems to me that the laptop itself (the cpu heatsink, the back cover above the ram sticks and the keyboard) are heating much more than in Windows under the same conditions. Maybe it is inherent to ubuntu... I cannot tell as I have never tried Linux on a laptop before.

Actually, when I had a problem with hiss on the headphone output of my XMG P505 and sent it to mysn.co.uk under warranty, it had the Prema Mod bios (not vBios) installed, and they were okay about accepting it like that, but said they had to reflash it back to the standard XMG-supplied Bios before they could send it back, which was okay with me.

I've had my sager 8651 since jan and was looking to repaste w/ ic diamond, but im a bit wary of messing it up. I opened up the laptop and got as far as attempting to disconnect the battery ( tried to force it out but assumed there must be a better way so i stopped), and then it took me abou half an hour to put thecase back on haha. Im not bad at tech, just a bit jittery with such an expensive piece of equipment.

Anyway, is there a resource i could turn to for a step by step repasting process for this specific model of laptop? Any help (and handholding) would be really appreciated.

I installed win8 just to play a few games, but I still haven't used it, however compared to other machines I didn't note any heating issue. All the switchable graphics technology is a relatively recent addition in Linux and I don't know how well is integrated in Ubuntu. I would check if it does switch off the gpu when not in use ( optirun nvidia-smi may do the trick if you are using optimus with the proprietary nvidia driver). Also have a check with powertop, it may help to locate power draining issues.

Install the package nvidia-prime. That should take care of your fan problems, and help out optimus.

    Hi,

    I'm interresing on P651SE or P651SG.

Can someone tell me the difference in the chassis between this two laptop ? P651SE is thinner than P651SG by 3mm, is there any thermal difference due to that ?

Is there throtteling issues when gaming ine GTA5 or heavy game in P651SE /P651SG ? Even if using Prema Bios ? What mhz can i have with GTX970m for example without throtteling ?

    I can have a P651SE with I7-470HQ + 8 go + 256 go SSD + 4K brillant for 1200€ in France , is it a good price ?

    Thanks :)

Depends on the paste, for best break in I would say turn it on immediately, then heat up the cpu using Intel burn test or p95 for a while, allowing the paste to spread nicely.

I will keep you posted about my linuptimus experience, playing with bumblebee and prime right now

Ill be using ic diamond 7, wish me luck

Alright so the manual only really tells me to "disconnect the cable" of the battery, but im still wary of forcing it out, if someone could reassure me that this is just what needs to be done please let me know haha

Ok ive repasted the cpu, unfortunately i couldnt paste the gpu (was a bit concerned since its shown as consistently at 80c with 99% load while playing witcher 3), since one of the screws was stripped. Thanks for all the help everyone

I tested all of those a while ago, and while it is true that Prime has the best performances, it is not that much better, just some % improvements. Moreover I don't like the fact that you have to re-login to switch graphics. Bumblebee doesn't have this limitation: you can run different apps on the integrated and on the discrete card in parallel, and with the Primus render bridge has very good performances too.

On the other hand the installation of Prime is dumb proof, while Bumblebee has more components and requires some more steps and attention to work properly.

@closer2 Your gpu temps in the witcher are not that bad. The witcher 2 and 3 are the only games that made my gpu go above 75C so far.

As for prime vs bumblebee... So far, prime is easier to set up on p650sg, will try to make the other work today

    Hello,

I have received my P651SE today. It has an IPS screen non-glossy.

I have a few questions. I installed Windows 8.1 then I went on the link given here to download the drivers on the mySN.de website and downloaded everything.

Everything seems to work quite well. I must admit it feels really weird because my previous laptop was a macbook pro retina 13.

My two biggest concerns are :

-The screen looks grainy. Is it because of the non-glossy display? I've never had one.

-The fans are not dead silent, especially the right one when you are in front of the computer. When I use the hotkey software to change the laptop from "performance" to "quiet", the right fan is jerky (jolting). Is that normal?
