At least the price of the machine at bare minimum is a lot cheaper after a few months. Just make sure to exclude everything you don't need since you already have it. Also needs a @jaybee83 quote so no one else makes this mistake.
Actually, Cakefish, did you try asking @clevo-extreme if they can somehow sell you only the board and possibly a new battery since its shorted?

I've swapped displays many times now and didn't bother battery most of the times and never fried anything.
the thing I've noticed is that 40pin eDPs can vary by a lot, if you take at your sharp 4k panel
http://www.panelook.com/LQ156D1JX01_SHARP_15.6_LCM_parameter_21688.html
that uses an I-PEX eDP with a 0.4mm pin pitch
and the panasonic panel uses a JAE eDP with 0.5mm pin pitch
http://www.panelook.com/VVX16T020G00_Panasonic_15.5_LCM_parameter_22014.html
the differences in signal interface are probably why this happened...so a bit more research might prevent stuff like in the future... -
Thanks for the suggestion but I wouldn't know where to begin with installing a motherboard. I don't trust myself either, considering the mess I've made with what should have been a simple display swap. Plus, I assume that it wouldn't be that much cheaper considering all the soldered components. The battery is fine I think, it just seems to be the motherboard that is dead as a dodo.
Thanks. I must try to think of the positives. No more scaling issues in Windows and longer battery life. I will still miss the Sharp display a lot. It is beautiful, the only downside is the glossiness.
I am tempted to get a replacement with the matte 4K from mySN, but I don't really feel like I deserve it after being such a klutz.
I see. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I did notice the difference in the size of the connector but foolishly assumed they would be compatible because both are 40 pin eDP. I did not think it through enough. I will still always unplug the battery from now on; if I ever feel brave enough to swap a display ever again that is. I don't know if I ever will be!

Hi guys,
Sorry to interrupt, I haven't been following this topic for quite a while, but is BIOS & EC 306 still the latest version out there?
If not, can anyone send me a link to the latest BIOS & EC?
Many thanks! -
Pretty sure it is. And then 307 is the latest for P65xSE.
EDIT: Unfortunately (but also paradoxically a good thing) my bank is preventing me from buying a replacement laptop to protect me from fraud. I've tried to ring but their phone lines are currently stupidly busy apparently and I'm now stuck in a waiting list for them to call me back so I can authorise a payment to Scan.

I received my p670sg.
Looks great. For now just playing with it a bit.
I found fingerprint software witch looks like the fingerprint software on my old w870CU.
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds030585
looks like it works in win 8.1. and on the P670SG -
It is done. I will have my replacement unit by Friday.
Thankfully I will not have to risk botching anything up a second time by replacing the screen myself as I picked a matte display. The AUO B156HAN1.2 panel. I have learnt my lesson and won't attempt to change the display again!
I will miss the pixel density of the Sharp 4K panel very much but I hope the AUO proves to be an adequate replacement. At least I can look forward to better battery life and no scaling issues in Windows anymore.
I really hope the light bleed is better on this new replacement. That's my biggest wish (along with no dead pixels).

Hey guys. I am planning on buying 2 M.2 SSDs for my P650SE and configuring RAID 0 on them. Is this possible and will I be able to install Windows on that RAID array without any problems? Thank you
BTW, which M.2 SSD would you recommend for me? -
I recommend the Samsung 850 Evo. Great performance for a reasonable price.

@Cakefish
Having a similar experience as you in recent laptops screen (I also come from p35x v3) and having this AUO screen on my p650sg, I can tell you about what I think.
At least on my screen, there is practically no screen bleed, a tiny tiny bit visible when the screen turns on when booting, but every dark movie screen is uniformly dark, same in games.
The resolution, coming from a 3k is noticeably less sharp, but it didn't bother me that much: yes fonts in Windows or text are less sharp, but it was more of a gimmick to me than anything else, as I game in 2k, only have 2k movies yet... As regards these two screens, the AUO has less maximum luminosity than the Panasonic but it is OK for me. The colors seems better on the AUO, I cannot tell for contrast. I really like the matte cover, it remove most of the reflections, and I do not see this grainy effect you were talking about.
The battery life with this is very good, and if you end up with a better 980m (crossing fingers for you) I think you will be very happy with this one.Cakefish likes this. -
Thanks, that's encouraging to read! The grainy/sparkly effect was quite annoying indeed (it creates the illusion that the screen is permanently wet). It was more subtle on the HDPI displays than my old Clevo P170SM and its TN screen, but still a bugbear. I'll be really chuffed to have it absent for once!
I browse the web a lot, so it's there that I'm going to miss the smooth, crisp text the most. I just gotta remember that I once went willingly from a 1080p panel down to a 768p panel when getting a new notebook and survived. This, by comparison, is definitely not as bad.
That's interesting that the colours are better than the Panasonic. I was very impressed by both the Panasonic's and the Sharp's colours so if this AUO is even better, that's a nice bonus too
Yeah, hoping for less lemon-like VRAM this time around!

Yeah, I did some research and everybody seems to love it, thanks
I plan on getting 2x250GB and putting them in the M.2 slots. As I asked earlier, will I be able to setup a RAID array and install Windows to that with no problems?
-

Don't take my words as holy on that, it was better to my eyes... I do not have gamut comparison numbers in head, but I like this screen better than the Panasonic (subjective opinion of course). By the way the Panasonic on my p35x v3 had a LOT if screen bleed, wondering if there is something wrong with these thin-ish lidded laptop. Will try to put pictures of the grain size of the screen in a whileCakefish likes this. -
speaking of ssds, are there any resellers like xotic pc or lpc that sells SM951 individually?

Scan and Overclockers UK both do here in the UK. I'm sure you'll be able to find some in the US that do.

Unfortunately we do not sell parts individually -
Support.1@XOTIC PC Company Representative
If you purchase your computer with us, then you can buy individual parts from us. But we don't just sell parts outright and have them listed on the site like other sites for electronics. We only do it as upgrades / replacements on the systems that were bought through us. -
The user interface for the AuthenTec software is nice but it's lacking since it'll only launch websites. Tried v.6 which I unpacked from Sony's Vaio update and it didn't add anything other than a refreshed user interface and explicit support for Win 8.1 64 bit. I just installed BioExcess and it'll launch websites, apps, and a few batch files I whipped together... a much more complete option. It was included with the EgisTec driver download from the Clevo site.

Still waiting for Scan to send me my build number so I can track the status of my order. It's supposed to be delivered tomorrow. Friday delivery was quoted on their website yesterday when I ordered.
Please arrive before weekend! *crosses fingers*
Edit: well, got confirmation that it won't be tomorrow. I guess I'm waiting until next week then. Awww...Last edited: Jul 9, 2015 -
Guys I have another question about SSDs. So right now the only noise coming from the laptop is from the HDD. If I install the SSDs and install the OS and programs on them and use the HDD only for storage, will the HDD work like now and make noise all the time even when I use only the stuff that's on the SSDs or will it only spin if it is being used? Please enlighten me
-
If your OS drive is the SSD then you'll notice a considerable reduction in noise and heat. I've had laptops with configurations including RAID 0 HDD, RAID 0 SSD,single SSD, single Hybrid SSD, and primary SSD with HDD storage. The quietest is setup using only SSDs followed closely by the SSD with HDD storage drive... even the hybrid drive is noisier.
-
For the my SG I've got BIOS= 1.03.07, EC=1.03.06. Came factory-flashed. Unfortunately Clevo doesn't upload BIOS/EC, so best way to get the latest is to contact your reseller. They might have a newer version to send you. Otherwise Prema ( HERE) is an awesome source of stock BIOS/EC if he has an officially released version (you will lose original boot splash screen). However, if you're not having any specific issues there really is no need to flash a newer one.Last edited: Jul 10, 2015

@kaded I am in this exact configuration, with a seagate spinpoint m9t @5400rpm for hdd.
It is slightly noisier than the ssd only of course, but I just set the drive to go to sleep after 1 min, so it stays totally silent afterwards, as if you only had the ssd.
So you are right, it will only spin when it is used if set up properly. To do so, be careful under windows because there are several utilities that keep using the disk and keep it awake (like indexation etc).kaded likes this. -
Where did you buy your new panel? I'm looking to replace my 3K panel too.

Hey guys, I just got a clevo P650SE, and I gotta say I'm impressed. Pretty damn good, currently installing some games, can't wait to play. However, few more things.
First, the screen feels a bit blurry compared to the rMbp I used to use before. I got an IPS Matte LCD, so is this expected? Any way I can calibrate the display? Thanks guys!
Also, on the right side, the usb port beside the SIM tray doesn't work, while the two others do. Is it my drivers, or is it simply not working?
And, whenever I install synaptics driver, it says synaptics 64bit enhancements has stopped working. I can move the mouse with the touchpad, left and right click, but nothing else! I can't scroll, zoom etc.
AND, for some reason, the GPU indicator constantly shows that my dGPU is being used, even from windows boot screen to current use! Why is this happening? I have drivers for both nvidia and intel graphicsLast edited: Jul 10, 2015 -
From this seller on eBay: http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUO-B156HAN...PTOP-SCREEN-/361316694353?nav=WATCHING_ACTIVE
Though my new P651SG will come with a B156HAN01.2 as the stock configuration anyway. So I won't have to do any more swapping displays around at least! (I ordered the AUO before I killed my poor laptop)Last edited: Jul 10, 2015comicgeek likes this. -
Hi, I flashed the stock BIOS/EC from premamod and now I'm able to use custom fan speed in Clevo Hotkey. Now I miss the Sager boot logo which I did thing will change when flashing the stock BIOS/EC. Before I had BIOS v1.03.09RLS1 and EC v1.03.09. Prema told me that my BIOS was up to date, but not the EC which the latest is 1.03.10.
So Now that I have the EC updated, is it okay to flash back the BIOS 1.03.09RLS1 that came with the laptop? Also couldn't help noticing that a option is missing in the BIOS that I flashed from premamod... yet can't remember what it was... -
MY REPLACEMENT WILL ARRIVE TOMORROW! YEAH!
I was already starting to suffer from laptop withdrawal symptoms
QUESTION: this system can take only take one PCIe M.2 SSD at a time, correct? The new configuration I ordered comes with Windows already installed on one. However, my old 'dead' P651SG also has a PCIe M.2 drive that I was using as the OS drive. I need to transfer all my precious files that I didn't get a chance to backup before the disaster happened over to the new drive. Would it be a simple matter of swapping the SSDs around and booting off the old drive, transferring to my SATA SSDs and then swapping back to the new drive? Unplugging the battery first of course!

Yes only one PCI-E SSD at a time, maybe the easiest is PCI-E -> SATA -> PCI-E if you have the capacity. -
Guys can someone help me? I'm using the P650SE about it's the microphone. Everything works on my laptop except the microphone, I've tried EVERYTHING to fix it, but it won't seem to! Please help!

Have you set your audio to stereo in the audio panel?
-
Sorry I meant stereo, not surround, it's set to stereo
-
Cool. So that method should theoretically work then? As long as the SSDs and RAM survived the incident. I'm just hoping and praying that they did.
If I lost those too I don't know what I'd do.
I'll find out soon enough. About 2 hours to be exact. Side note: DPD real-time GPS parcel tracking is amazing. Best UK courier service by far.

They are good, just so long as they actually ship your parcels between depos over night
I would be surprised if other parts were dead.
-
Oh FFS just as I was praising them and I get a message saying they couldn't deliver because no one was in - THEY ATTEMPTED TO DELIVER TO THE WRONG HOUSE.
DAMN IT ALL.
Edit: It just so happens that there are two streets with the exact same name in my city. And they had my postcode wrong. Which is silly as they had TLx in their system whereas Plymouth postcode can only be PLx. Scan have the correct postcode in their system. Something went wrong on DPD's end.
I retract my high praise for DPD.
I rang them up and they are delivering tomorrow at least. Sigh, one more day to go...

Ah man that sucks, hopefully it's at least all cleared up now!
-
With any luck, it should be delivered tomorrow on Sunday. I didn't know they did Sunday deliveries so I was pleasantly surprised about that. Helped lessen my frustration a bit.
I'm gonna ring up in the morning and double check whether the driver has the correct address this time.
Every other time DPD has delivered to my address the driver has been a chap called Matt and the service absolutely flawless. This time it was Russell. It's unfair to definitively say Russell was to blame but it's a bit of a suspect coincidence...!
It just seems the world doesn't want me to have a laptop at the moment! Everything that could go wrong is currently going wrong!
While I wait, I'm wondering whether anyone else has had experience of the AUO panel and whether or not it has the 'grain' effect that seems to plague most modern display panels these days? Specifically referring to a sort of speckling/sparkly effect on light colours and white backgrounds that creates the illusion that the screen is permanently moist.

I can say that I don't see this effect at all...
In another note, any return on how the new premamod bios is performing ? I'm away from my machine until Tuesday so cannot test, but eager to know! -
Robbo99999 Notebook Prophet
Haha, moist is often a good positive word to describe a lot of things, but a laptop screen ain't one of them! And poor Russel, having to compete with Matt like that! -
No such "moistness" on mine either. Coming from the beloved RGBLED on my prior notebook, this AUO is one of the best FHD notebook screens I've ever used. Pretty well calibrated out of the box and no dead pixels either, for me at least. I've also noticed that the glossy nature of the RGBLED was more of a strain on my eyes compared to this matte AUO. I don't think I'll be going back to glossy
. In other words, I'm happy with the AUO.

Well it's Matt's turn again today. Let's see if he does a better job than Russell
Edit: I can see that they still have the wrong address on their system via the tracking map thing. It's going to happen again - they have the wrong address AGAIN! AND THEIR PHONE LINE IS CLOSED BECAUSE IT'S A SUNDAY! ARGH!
2nd edit: I managed to get through to their phone line (found a different number that actually worked). The problem comes from there being two streets in Plymouth with the exact same name so I've told them to try the other one today and tried to direct them as best as possible. It's the best I can do. C'mon Matt, you can do it!
It's silly, I've never had any problem with DPD in the past. To give credit where credit is due, their phone advisors are very professional and helpful. So at least there's that!Last edited: Jul 12, 2015 -

C'mon Matt, you're the pro, we expect it of you, I mean it happened to Russell, but you...you should storm it! ;-)Cakefish likes this. -
Matt delivered the goods. Both metaphorically and literally. Cheers Matt! Can always count on you! <3
Unboxing is a bit anticlimactic. This is the first time I've ever unboxed a new system that's identical to my old one! Only have myself to blame of course!
I'm just happy to finally have received it - now I can get things back to normal!
However, having said that, I immediately notice one big difference. Take a look;
The 180W PSU that Clevo includes with the P651SG has gone on a diet:
Smaller, more compact one is the new version. Old one is Chicony Electronics, new one is Delta Electronics. I wonder if this will impact overclocking at all?Robbo99999 likes this. -
jeanjackstyle Notebook Evangelist
You will have to tell us... Only efficiency can change between the two, I assume! Voltage and amperage should be identical, maybe the smaller one will get a bit warmer being more compact.
-
Amp rating is different. 9.5 A for old one. 9.23 A for new. Interesting...
As for the display. I like it. Looks alright. Yes, I can immediately notice the difference in the number of pixels (and that's gonna take some getting used to) but other than that, the colours/viewing angles seem really good and best of all - pretty much no 'grain'! YEAH! There is noticeably less grain effect than both the Sharp 4K and Panasonic 3K panels on white backgrounds and light colours. So that's a MAJOR bonus!
