Yes since that will be the driver used for such things display wise, otherwise it's not something I have run into.

Thank you for the reply. Any idea where I can get one (in Europe) ? I did some research and found some generic Chinese ones but I'm not sure they are reliable. Can I use 120W charger from other model such as the W110ER ?

Yes you can. The plugs on every Clevo I have seen are the same so they must be compatible. I think that the W110ER shipped with a 90W power supply btw.

Okay, I downloaded the latest (15.4380) Windows 10 Intel HD 4600 drivers direct from the Intel downloads website and installed them, since doing so I haven't had the problem with the windows not coming to the fore happening, though I'll give it some time to tell if this is really the case. Thanks for the suggestions.

BTW interestingly, I 've found that the "latest" drivers that the Intel Driver Update Utility suggests are often older than the ones installed on my system, so it can be better to download drivers directly from the Intel website

Yes they don't seem to update that too often, maybe so people are not constantly downloading updates.

Has anyone tried to fix headphone jack and linux. I know sager has its own driver for windows for this task, for fan controler, etc. I just wanted to ask if there is any solution for Linux.

I spoke too soon, the problem of not being able to bring windows that have been minimised or are in the background is still there, it's *so* annoying! e.g. I have two chrome windows active, but when I hit the icon in try to select it in the task bar, it just briefly shows it then immediately goes back to the original one, or else it doesn't show at all. It's doing this right now. I also have Steam minimized, but clicking it in the task bar doesn't do anything, it stays in the background.

I have to minimize everything else to make Steam or my other browser Window appear.

I think it was a few weeks ago that this started happening. Is there anything else that could be causing this? Some arcane Windows 10 setting I've accidentally enabled, perhaps?

I do get that with XTU sometimes and by moving a window to the left and giving it half the screen it lets me select XTU on the other side.

I was wondering something about the durability of my repaste.

I did repaste my P650sg roughly 10 months ago (June 2015), with liquid cooling ultra. Since then it has been a dream as regards temps, but recently I did notice something.

Even if the temperatures are a bit higher under load now than they were after the repaste (but still in my tolerance limits), I am observing a significant temperature difference between the different cores of my CPU (see attached image). the difference is at max ~5 to 10 degrees C.

    benchmark_core_differences.jpg

So my question is: are the temperatures probes of the different cores to be trusted? I am a total newbie as concern this level of CPU knowledge, so any help would be appreciated. However, if I remember correctly and check the temperature graphs I did after the repaste, the cores were more aligned than now.

Second question: does this difference means that the paste did degrade in some way over a part of the CPU, and that a repaste is advised? I would be interested in arguments about it, as I would be happy to use core temps differences as an additional marker over only package temperature to assess the quality of my repaste over time.

    Any comment is welcome!

The headphone out and mic-in ports are terrible on this laptop, lot's of background noise (and this was after I had it re-checked by MySN), I resorted to using an external Cambridge Audio DACMagic XS - no hiss and much better sound quality in general. It doesn't do Mic-In however, so now I need to find something that will be good for mic-in to use with my ModMic...

Just mentioned this as I'm not sure it's worth spending alot of time on trying to get the native audio ports to work...

I had the same problem but then I noticed that if I go to Clevo Control Center and the Gaming tab and change the Headphone setting to anything other than Direct, it introduces this very bad background hissing that is really annoying. But Direct has almost no hissing or ambient noise at all so that is something worth trying if you haven't already.

Thanks, I just tried that and your correct, levels of hiss are much reduced on "direct" setting, though still audible. There is no hiss whatsoever when I use the external DACMagic XS, but it's useful to know when I don't have this with me. The Mic input is still terrible, though! Am thinking of getting one of those cheap Chinese £10 USB sound cards for Mic input, though you need to be careful with the chipset of those, as the ones with a CM-108 chipset don't provide enough power for condenser Mics, though the CM-119 chipset ones do, apparently...

The absolute readings are not to be trusted no, but they wont drift a lot with time so if they were even before the repaste they should be even now.

Yes direct fixes lots of issues. I always leave it there. My biggest issue is how to fix headphone jack in linux. I would like to have headphones working when I use linux. That is just terrible for a laptop this good. I really wish this laptop didn't have this issue as this is the only one bothering me.

As for VR not being supported and Gsync i don't really mind.

I have tried the OC app when it was not really out yet before and I didn't really like it. Still prefer Inspector because it allows voltage tweaking as well.

I use the Line Out for my headphones under Linux Mint, seems to power them just the same as the Headphone Jack under Windows.

Hey, just wanted to say that this laptop (with a 980M and 6820 processor) works a treat with the HTC Vive, at least so long as optimus is turned off. Compatibility and no noticeable framerate dips. It seems reasonable to expect Oculus will be the same. Which means that this is, to my knowledge, the most compact (in size and weight) machine to be pseudo-VR-ready. (I say pseudo because both Oculus and Valve are officially iffy about all "M" cards, I took a punt on this one because the 980M seems to be equivalent to the stated minimum of an AMD R9 290).

Yes i tried Line Out jack and it is working. I guess headphone jack is used to amplify or do something that is related to those modes you find in Control Center.

    Thanks again for tip :D

    BTW anyone has external DAC+AMP

I don't think that 980m is equivalent to r9 290. I have one and it is not the same unless the game is screwed up with nvidia stuff and it does not work well on any GPU older than 900 series. A friend of mine will get his Oculus next month and I might give it a shot and see if it works. I wish VR will add support for systems like ours since it is possible in theory and our systems have the power to run games

They should be pretty close in performance, but the 290 can just pump in way more power.

Yeah..... the R9 290 is like half the power of a 980M. AMD has fallen behind, there was some hype with the latest tech they released, but performance has shown it to be nothing but a joke. Shame. AMD used to always be the better value but last 2-3 years they have not been. Think nVidia won the war. That is where all these problems we're all having started.

From a value perspective in the desktop space AMD GPUs have been just fine for the most part.

    Hi gang,

Any thoughts about using this spare ASUS unit as a secondary charger?

    OEM charger specs:
    Input: 100-240V ~ 2.34A 60-50HZ
    Output: 19.5V 9.23A

    ASUS charger specs:
    Input: 100-240V ~2.25A 60-50Hz
    Output: 19V 9.5A

If you have already plugged it in and it did not cause something violent to happen to the electronics then it's the right polarity.

Ever hooked up a device to the opposite voltage it should be? It's never pretty. Worth checking before plugging it in.

my 256GB Crucial MX100 (2,5" SATA) is really full all the time - which drive should i use to upgrade? Replace it by a 512GB Variant or buy an M.2 PCIe x4 Version for OS and keep it as a spare drive?

As i found out our P651SG does NOT support NVMe and i have to stick with SATA or AHCI version. What are your suggestions ?

If you go with the PCIe AHCI drive, using that would disable the second M.2 slot (IIRC). So you wouldn't be able to use the MX100 as storage. You would need to go with another Sata SSD in order to use both slots.

If you get another MX100 256gb drive, you could put them in raid 0 and have speeds close to what a single PCIe drive would have offered. Or keep the MX100 and just get another 500gb and leave them in an independent configuration with no RAID, but have more storage.

the prices for an MX100 256GB are incredibly high in Germany - ~150€ so putting a second one into a RAID 0 sadly is not an option....

Agreed. A SSD is a SSD, NVME/PCIe SSDs might be faster, but you won't notice the difference in most situations.

Hey, I don't know if it happens to anybody else, but updating my nvidia to the latest version (365.19) messed up Optimus on my p650sg. Games or benchmarks tried to launch on igpu, after a reboot they use correctly dgpu, but this one stays on all the time afterwards.

I will try a clean reinstall tomorrow, but hope that nvicrap did not mess Optimus like they messed gsync on 364.xx drivers (according to p650rg thread).

Have you tried changing the settings in the Nvidia control panel as to which graphics card they should be running on (would be on the Manage 3D settings tab, then under the tab for programs and not the global settings). Not sure what model you have might have, but have you checked the BIOS to see if there is the setting for hybrid or dedicated graphics that might be turned on as well?

You can try setting it to globally use one or the other and rebooting to see if it is behaving as you expect on a basic level.

So i've been thinking of finally updating my OS to Win 10 Pro, are there any problems with drivers or hardware i should consider? My laptop's specs are in my signature. The computer is otherwise not tweaked in any measure but i do have Prema's VBIOS for the GPU. The actual BIOS is the stock one.
