Nice, and 1.7gb/sec is still pretty usable ;)

That's why I got the SM951, much cheaper and similar performance on P771ZM which is also limited by PCIE speeds..

The small file speeds on the new 961 do look tempting, but you do need the full 1tb version to get all the speed.

yeah, you're right, but would we even be able to get the full potential on this computer? the 950 is already limited, and so's the 951...

If your seeing limits on the 950 and 951, I'd imagine the 961 would be the same way, but I haven't seen any benchmarks on it though. Even if it is capped on the benchmarks and theoretical maximum speeds, it might not really show any difference in real world usage though. Just depends on what they drives are used for mostly.

The main limitation is the fact that our laptops use pcie gen 2 (~5 Gbps) instead of gen 3 (8Gbps) like the 951 and 950 use , the small file transfers shouldn't see much of a slow down though since the main problem with them was AHCI and how it handles file transfer cues, with NVMe and the different ssd controllers making the difference it shouldn't be slowed down by the interface as long as the transfer doesn't surpass ~20 Gbps

What i don't understand is why back when i ordered it the first time, people told me that the laptop didn't support nvme, even though it clearly does. I missed out on 6 months of this performance...

Sequential will be limited but the 961 1tb has 50% faster small file IOPs and faster write speeds that only just saturate the bus.

It might not have been available at the time. Specs do change from time to time. It might have been enabled after it launched.

Does the 950 pro in our laptop even when there is no NVMe support and only PCIE gen 2? I'm confused.

As far as I'm aware NVme drives don't work in the 8651/8652.. Only M2 SATA or AHCI drives work in them..

I'm currently using the 950 pro as my only drive and i was able to boot without any issue. of course, you'll have to go activate it in the bios.

before i had a Samsung evo 850 250gb. i installed the 950 pro 500gb, activated it in the bios, installed the nvme driver from Samsung then used the data migration software. once i finished copying, i simply removed the 850 evo and the system booted up without problems once it figured out the 850 was gone. one blue screen, it restarted and all worked since then.

Make sure that you don't have any monitoring programs open all the time because some of them will try pinging the disk for its current temperature, waking it up. I have my disk setup the same way, one SSD with OS and frequently used programs and a 500GB HDD that I use for long term storage and games. I used to have the same "issue" until I figured out it was HWMonitor that woke up my disk.

The P650sg does not come with a UEFI bios too. It's an old school dos-like bios. No mouse support and such.

Nope said it before and said it again, the Clevo P650SE/SG cannot use NVMe drives.. They can use M.2 AHCI/SATA drives.. So a SM951 AHCI drive is your best shot

That is right. The RE and RG versions could use NVMe, but not the SE and SG models. It was updated with the newer versions with 6th gen processors, not the 4th or 5th gen versions.

That's clear. I think the confusion stems from the thread being a combination of both the broadwell and skylake versions if the same notebook line.

I want to start experimenting with Linux a little bit without sacrificing a lot of disk or going dual boot so VM is a good option. But I have found out that the stock BIOS has no visualization options so I can't install any 64bit OS on VM. Is Prema BIOS the only way to unlock these options in BIOS or am I missing something?

I think you are right, that you would have to use a custom BIOS. I can't recall seeing any virtualization options in the stock BIOS before.

You can use some programs like hardware info to look if certain technologies are activated and then if the virtualisation programme you want to use requires those technologies.

Well good for you.. To my last info, this was not supposed to work.. Support in BIOS wasn't there...

Even Premamod didn't add support for it.. Please post a picture of your BIOS screen showing your BIOS version..

well, bios version is posted right there on the cpuz screen, and from what i heard on the prema mod website, even the stock latest bios has support for nvme. as for a picture of my bios screen, i'll get one up as soon as i get home. and i didn't flash my bios at all, i got the laptop back in December and support was already there. i got this laptop with prema mod's bios already on it.

“Will the Samsung 950 Pro work with non-NVMe chipsets?”

From my testing, yes, and the results were just as fast as posted NVMe benchmarks from hardware review web sites. I used the 950 Pro with three different motherboards — Z87, Z97, A85 — and they all worked perfectly.

I bought my P650sg close to $2300 and with all the upgrades I made it's about $2800. I'm sure the resale value of this would be very low being it not a botique brand and the fact that there are more regular customers who like "regular" laptops. People who don't buy for specs first but for looks and status first. It's going to be difficult to resell this thing at the price I wanted. So I'd just keep it and use it until it is totally worn out. The new versions with the 10 series look tempting but a year from now, 2 years from now they would be outdated as well.

You can't keep up with technology. I bought a Tesla model S 2 months ago. They update almost as fast as computers, but they cost a whole lot more. Still I'm glad I got one.

I am also feeling the 1060 laptop temptation.

This week I installed the Windows 10 anniversary update, after which m P505 (P651SE) becamse very noisy. Fans are spinning up a lot more, even when doing nothing. Anybody else experiencing this? The Clevo Control Center crashes on Startup, so I cannot select the "Quiet" profile.

Best you can do is reinstall Clevo Control Center and enable that Quiet profile. You will find the latest version here: http://www.clevo.com.tw/EN/E-SERVICES/download/ftpout_download.asp?sno=7875&no=1

Also bear in mind that lately there are a lot of updates pushed by Microsoft that download and install automatically in the background. My CPU has been hitting temps in the 70s at times due to that and unfortunately you can't do anything to stop them.

Try to reinstall the Clevo drivers and see if that fixes it. When I updated to the anniversary update my Bluetooth devices stopped working. I managed to fix it after reinstalling the driver from Clevo.

Seems that fingerprint reader have been broken. There is no EgisTec ES603 Swipe Fingerprint Sensor device into Device Manager. Instead I see "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" device
    USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\5&2AD42009&0&3
I tried to reinstall Windows 10, install drivers from mysn site for fingerprint reader but without any good results. How to fix this issue?

    Hey All,

I know this has been brought up before, but I finally got my hands on a 1440p 144hz monitor, so for those with 1440p monitors, have you got 144hz? Currently getting 1440p@120hz - unless this is the best it can do out of miniDP? Monitor is a Asus MG279Q and got a P650SG.

No current option to set it any higher, 120hz is nice though! but if the ability to get 144hz is there may as well get the most.

    Thanks :)

Hello, P650sg owner here. My Killer 1525 network card is dying on me after a little over 1 year of use. Keeps disconnecting and reconnect even with the latest drivers. I have ordered an Intel 8260 to replace it. Anybody a current owner of an Intel 8260? How do you like it? Do I need to know anything important before I install it, btw I have never installed a network card so... yeah. Any help will be appreciated.

^ running an 8260 in mine actually, swapped over couple of months back, can't fault it. Works seamlessly, no drops and keeps a solid connection.

Installation wise, very simple - Uninstall all killer drivers before you begin. If you have never opened it up, the whole underside of the laptop is a cover, so just remove all the screws then pop it off. Wireless card comes out on an angle, also has to go in on an angle and is held down by 1 screw, do not over tighten and use the right size screw driver.

Have a look at these 2 pictures for reference: -
    underside
    wireless card

Should take about 10 mins or less to install, you'll be right!
