Thanks. Do you guys at Sager not have any left over? When they were originally ordered, did it come with both cables, or did they come from Clevo with the panel/cable already installed?

Panel and cable would come with the base unit.

I have a Clevo P650SE of which i purchased from PC Specialist in the UK with the i7-4720HQ and GTX 970M. The laptop has been with me for more than a year and while i have always remained impressed with it, one problem which has always bothered me is how the keyboard feels so cheap and tacky. (The keys seem to wobble about and attract an excessive amount of grease!) I happened to see an advert on TV last night for PC Specialist and thought i would check out their website. There is a new laptop on there called the Defiance III (Clevo P650RS-G) which appears to have almost the same chassis as the P650SE, with the main notable difference being an RGB keyboard which looks fantastic!

I am wondering whether it would be possible to interchange the keyboard on the P650SE with that from the P650RS-G, as the size dimensions and layout seem to be identical. Would there be more to it than just swapping the keyboard, for example does the RGB colouring have any relation to the BIOS which is used? (I remember on the MSI GS60, resellers of modified units like CyberPower could restrict the colours via BIOS to a single pre-determined value!) Also, i noticed the port layout on the P650RS-G is a bit different which suggests the motherboard will use a different layout as well, so would the keyboard ribbon cable connector be in the same position?

The cabling is different so it can't be swapped sadly.

Damn. That is rather unfortunate, but i appreciate the response regardless. I had my hopes up because an RGB keyboard would have made this laptop perfect. It will probably be another year until i'm back in the market for a new laptop, but i'll make it a priority to get one with the best keyboard possible!

The RGB lights require extra connections for each of the lines so they can be controlled hence the difference, good luck with your future purchase :)

    Hi Guys,

Just bought a Intel 600p m.2. SSD with NVMe and was wondering whether anyone had any tips about getting this recognized in the bios as a bootable device. I can install windows on it but when the first shutdown occurs it will not boot from it. Obviiously this is the Metabox P650se and I have put it in the 2nd m.2. slot which supports pcie ssd cards

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

I have the Samsung 950 PRO NVMe. All I did was plug it in and go. BIOS recognized it, both Windows and Linux recognized it right away without any special drivers or configuration. I used the M.2 slot that sits directly between the battery and the SATA HDD bay.

If you're using the right slot, have you tried to reset the CMOS? Try unplugging the AC, internal battery, and CMOS battery, then pushing and holding the power button for 30 sec. After that, plug everything back in and turn it on. It should automatically send you directly to the BIOS config. See if that helps any.

As @seeker_moc suggested try loading BIOS defaults and try again with booting.

The disk should already be formatted if you have placed windows on it.

If it's currently blank/uninitialized, then it shouldn't matter. Windows should format the disk during install. If it's not showing up, then you can try to make it GPT to see if it makes a difference. It shouldn't, but you never know with these things. If it's currently MBR, then you will have to repartition it, as I think NVMe will only boot from a GPT disk.

That is right, only in gpt will windows start the installation process. I am just a little sceptical about starting again because I tried every setting I could think of earlier then I installed the prima mod and it still wouldn't work. From what I have read online don't they need a bios update so that you can select nvme as the bootable system rather than ahci or raid?

The ACHI/raid option should be left the same as it was in the installation, it goes on top of any boot device you select and applies to any kind of disk in the system.

Eg in mine I have a single SM961 (PCI-E NVME) I have mine running in AHCI mode. If I went into raid mode (to say add a second disk and stripe them) I would install in RAID mode (or migrate it).

Clevo keyboards are known to be ****... The Asus/MSI keyboards are so much better! I love the Asus ones especially.. Its because Clevo use the same keyboard in literally all the models and its retarded that the 17" laptop uses the same 15" laptop keyboard which makes it so cramped!

Hey guys, I have a question regarding shutting down HDD after idle option in Windows 10.
In Windows 8.1 and as far as I remember in Windows 10(before anniversary update) this option was functioning just fine, It would shut down my spinning HDD after idle for 1-5 minutes and that ANNOYING noise went away. But after the anniversary update, the HDD no longer shuts down after idle, and spins all the time, making a lot of noise. How can I get it working again? I've got my system installed on my SSD and all of my music, pictures, documents, games etc. on my HDD. I also have the Documents, Music etc folders of Windows linked to my HDD. I monitorise the HDD usage in Task Manager but nothing is using it unless I do.

Any monitoring software that runs on the background will poll the disk for its temperature and/or its usage and won't allow it to stay in its "idle" state for long enough to sleep. At least that has been my experience as I had the same problem with Windows 10 even before the anniversary update.

    Hi All,

I have the Sager NP8651 with the 1TB HDD and i'm looking to replace it with a m.2 SSD. I was wondering if the Samsung 960 EVO would work? I'm just concerned about the BIOS not recognizing it as it's a new product.

    Regards,
    S

With a 99% confidence that it works, but you won't have the NVME protocol "enabled" it will only work in AHCI mode.
Maybe pickup a "normal" M.2 SSD instead a NVME one, it's cheaper.

@Trewhela The CPU heatsink screws are M2x4L screws. You can find them on ebay. Just don't buy nylon screws, prefer the metal ones.

@skandal Thanks for letting me know that I won't be able to use the NVMe protocol.

Any suggestions for a good SSD? The only ones i recommended around is the Samsung 850 EVO (both the 2.5 and m.2 SSD are SATA based) I wasn't able to find any Gen 2.0 SSD available, and it seems that Gen 2.0 had very few products.

I'm looking for long term reliability and i'm ok with trading the speed of the m.2 ssd if the 2.5 SSD is more reliable.

    Thanks

The M.2 and 2.5" evo drives can even work together in raid, take your pick at the cheapest one, I have been running a pair in one machine since launch without issue.

    @Meaker@Sager
Thank you for the suggestion. The samsung evo 850 is on sale at bestbuy and the 500 GB one is available for $159+tax. I plan to replace the 7200rpm HDD with the SSD. I was very keen on using the PCI-E m.2 SSD (960 EVO) but I guess the NP8651 was built before NVMe became popular.

Is there any precaution i should take before swapping the drives (I don't intend to have the 7200 drive)? other than the usual backups?

    Thanks

Any Crucial, Sandisk or Samsung SSD will be good. Pick the cheapest one, their performance is very similar.

Use the 7200rpm HDD AS a backup. So image a fresh install onto it and put it away for future recovery if you don't want to use it.

    Hello,

Does someone have problem with displayport / external monitor?

When I run external monitor with P650 and gtx 1060, sometimes my monitor goes black and "no signal" or "monitor is going to sleep" then I just have to turn it off and turn it on to get everything worked again.

    It happens randomly...

Any solutions? It is monitor fault or GPU / Mobo?

Anyone fitted one of the 15mm samsung\seagate 4tb drives in the p650se?

I can pick up a seagate backup plus 4tb for cheap (130$ right now) and rip the hdd to put it inside but i have no way of checking if it will fit without destroying the enclosure.

It can fit two 7mm drives. So I'm guessing that if it fits is going to be a very close fit.

It wouldn't work, while the thickness may be there in the laptop, you wouldn't be able to plug it in, the SATA connection for the second hdd would hit the casing on the drive, preventing you from actually plugging the thing in.

@metaldemon95, You are right. Acording to this review you can see it's impossible to fit.

I was assuming the physical disk wouldn't go over the SATA connections, and that with a little push you could fit it.

@Atvaark Is the 950 Pro read/write speeds comparable to the one expected in a NVMe protocol (2,500MB/s and 1,500MB/s) or is it at SATA 3 speed (around 550/520MB/s)

Something like AS SSD to report the communication protocol it's using. And compare your benchmarks with some reviews on that use hardware that support NVMe.

Has anyone been able to install any Linux distro without any problem.

I've tried Ubuntu, Manjaro and Fedora and there's always something that's not working. Either it's the touchpad that's not even recognized or the screen that doesn't turn on after suspending or not booting at all or some other thing that I can't remember now (it's been a while since my last try).

Has anyone been able to solve this?

I've been rocking arch Linux on my p650sg for about a year now. The only things that don't work - pinch to zoom (which doesn't seem to be something that's going to work anytime soon). And Bluetooth (which I don't care enough about to try to get working).

Before going with arch Linux I was running Ubuntu for a while and don't remember having any issues with it.

I gave it a try again today. Tried to change to use BIOS instead of UEFI. So far I can say everything is working (P650RP6 - Ubuntu 16.10)

I'm dual booting because of games and having to change again to UEFI to be able to boot windows is a bit of an hassle but it's better that not having Linux.
