Hey guys! First time poster here. Glad to see there is still so much activity from owners of this now couple year old laptop.

I've decided to post today because I have been running into an issue with my Sager NP8652-S for nearly a year now, that for the life of me I can't seem to figure out the root cause to (and apologies if it has been posted before, I honestly haven't looked through the 900+ pages of this thread). My laptop has the i7 4720HQ and the 980m, and for some reason that is totally beyond me, my 4720HQ refuses to go past 1.6 GHz when on battery power. I have messed around in the Windows settings, bios, and have formatted Windows several times. Up until today I have been using a program called "Throttle Stop" that fixes the issue (when the program is running), but as I am now giving this laptop to my sister due to me "upgrading" to an Alienware 15 (I know, cliche right?), I would like to see if there is a way to solve this without having an extra piece of software running at all times.

I'm a pretty tech savvy guy, having built multiple computers and have been messing around with them and tweaking them for over a decade (yes, I'm 20, and "over a decade" puts me at <10 years old. I have truly been messing around with computers since then). So if you need ANY information from me, no matter how technical, I should more-than-likely be able to provide it for you. I really appreciate any help that you guys can provide, and look forward to you guys' responses.

    -Anthony

It's in there so the 980M can be freed up as much as possible without exceeding the battery safety specifications. I don't think even Prema's mods tried to get around that.

Hi guys, quick question about the Mini Display ports/Hdmi port on Clevo P651SE model.

There are 2 mini display ports and 1 HDMI port

Now the thing that I was wondering about buying a 27'' Monitor 144hz (Acer 27" Predator XF270H) for it.
Which connection do you recommend I use :

    - mini display ports
    -hdmi

Is it worth 144hz vs 60hz?

Thanks to all in advance for reading my post.

It would have to be display port to get the resolution/refresh rate. Then you have to check what the IGP can do in terms of max resolution and refresh rate.

    thanks for your reply.

From the 2 mini display ports, there is none linked to 970M directly? or both are to IGP?

    • Processor Graphics ‡Intel® HD Graphics 4600
    • Graphics Base Frequency400 MHz
    • Graphics Max Dynamic Frequency1.20 GHz
    • Graphics Video Max Memory2 GB
    • Graphics OutputeDP/DP/HDMI/VGA
    • Max Resolution (HDMI 1.4)‡3840x2160@60Hz
    • Max Resolution (DP)‡3840x2160@60Hz
    • Max Resolution (VGA)‡2880x1800@60Hz
So this means that if I buy a 144hz monitor, I will not benefit from that refresh rate?

I've used an Asus 144hz monitor on the P670SG before, using displayport.
Was running at 2560 x 1440 but 120hz was highest refresh rate, still a huge improvement over 60hz.

The displayports are fed by the IGP (intel hd graphics 4600)
You need display port for high resolutions and refresh rates, and a good cable.

Thanks for the reply. How did you achieve 120hz, when the IGP like you see above states 60hz...?

I will definitely buy a good cable :), I just need to know if it works before I buy the monitor as that is pretty expensive and would not want to buy it and then realize that it doesn't work as it intended.

    thanks.

Hi guys, I've had my P650SE for 2 years now and its been great for the most part, however now I'm starting to run into a problem.

My laptop takes a very long time to post (over 2 minutes). When I press the power button, the power LED light comes on, the indicator LED lights come on (left most GPU light is solid green, right most and second to the right most LEDs are on, and third to the right most is blinking). Keyboard LED lights also come on, and I can change LED level and also turn on max fan with Fn+1. However, the screen stays black and the Sager logo doesn't come up for 2+ minutes.

I recently installed an M.2 SSD, however this problem started happening a while after the installation. I haven't made an changes in the BIOS, nor have I touched any of the internals apart from the SSD. I've tried turning on the laptop without anything in it's ports (no USB, headphone or power connected) but the same thing happens. Right now I'm scared to turn this thing off, so I keep it on sleep even when its in my backpack.

I do have the GPU overclocked through MSI Afterburner (+100 MHz core clock, +200 MHz memory clock), could that be causing this problem?

I absolutely need this laptop since I'm a computer science student in college, so any help is appreciated.

I think because they are specifying the max resolution possible, and then the refresh rate at that resolution.
So it can do 4K but only @ 60hz, but it will do 2K (2560 x 1440) @ 120hz which is what I used since my monitor was 2K 144hz.

While I am not sure if it is exactly the same as you, I had a similar issue a year ago. I was swapping drives with a different OS on it and swapped back and my system never seemed to post (LEDs were on but no Sager logo). I never tried waiting for a long period of time for it to come up so I can not say if waiting for 2+ minutes would have helped. I had to take my original drive and format it on a different PC other than my laptop. After I did that I installed it back into my laptop and it would post normally again.

Hmmm. The weird thing about my problem is that it came up a few weeks after I installed my SSD. Unfortunately I don't have the time to reinstall my OS on a different HDD so I'm hoping theres a more convenient fix.

have you checked that your RAM is ok? I had a similar problem and one of my RAM modules was not working properly.

Otherwise, you might need to make a new OS instal...which should not take more than 10 min.

Have been having issues with my 650SG's display, which I troubleshot to a bad cable. While waiting the month it's going to take to arrive I was using a couple of external displays (displayport and HDMI) to do my work/game. Ended up rigging up the existing display cable with tape that worked until two nights ago, when I stopped getting anything at all from the laptop's LCD which was not a major deal as I rarely travel with it currently.

However, when I started it up the following day back on an external display, I realized that none of my programs were using my dedicated GPU outside of two emulators (PCSX2 and Dolphin). In the games that display what was being used, my 980m was no longer listed. GPU utilization via the Nvidia monitoring tool stays at 0%. Nothing was updated between the two days.

These are the things I have tried so far:

    • Setting the windows power profile to max.
    • Setting the adapter setting in the Nvidia control panel to use the dedicated GPU, as well as making sure each program was set to use it.
    • Setting the power management in the Nvidia control panel to max performance.
    • Fresh installs of both the current and original drivers of the Intel 4600 and Nvidia drivers, utilizing the driver cleanup tool each time.
    • Install the drivers for the Intel 4600 and 980M off Sager's site
    • Trying to utilize multiple external displays in extended mode to force the 980 to be used.
    • Disabling the the integrated graphics in the device manager.

Both graphic solutions display correctly in the device manager, and the 980M is listed as the GPU in the bios

This has never been an issue in the 2 years I have owned this laptop. It's worked just fine on external displays in the past. I've been scouring the internet for solutions and nothing has worked. Until I found that the emulators worked, I had figured I had shorted my GPU out by messing with the display cable. Thankfully can rule that out.

A clean windows update might do the trick, if it's working OK in some apps it's very unlikely to be a hardware issue.

My laptop's GPU fan is buzzing/rattling. I think the bearing is failing. Where can I get a replacement fan from, and how easy is it to replace the fan?

The sound is coming from the left side of the keyboard, from underneath the WASD keys, and seems to be intermittent.

How do I check if my RAM is working fine? Also, I don't think the problem could my OS install as the OS should have nothing to do with post process, right?

    RAM checking:
You look for Memtest and follow the instructions on how to run the test. If it doesn't give you any errors then you are good to go with RAM at least.

Left side of the laptop should be CPU fan not GPU....

P.S I think it is better to go with the laptop back from where you bought it and ask them to check it.

Every memory test I've found requires the laptop to restart, which is a problem because the laptop seems to randomly decide whether it wants to turn on or not. The problem has gotten worse, before it used to take 2 mins to post, now it's not posting at all :(

I'm going to buy new ram and try that out. The problem is that I just moved into my university dorms, and don't have the required tools to open up my laptop - I'll have to buy those too.

Just to clarify, is the CPU or GPU fan under the WASD keys?

Also, I absolutely need this laptop for university so sending it off is the worst case scenario. I also bought it from XoticPc when I was in the US, but now I'm in Canada so sending it back will be very expensive.

So I bought an extra stick of RAM and tried it in all 4 RAM slots. I tried resetting CMOS, disconnecting the battery , removing both my HDD and SSD, but nothing is working. Oh and I also broke my keyboard wire while trying to access the ram slots under the keyboard. I am at my wit's end. I guess my only option is to ship my laptop to Xotic and get charged a fortune for out of warranty repair.

What a sh*tty start to my 3rd year with this laptop.

If you are referring to resetting the CMOS battery then yes I have tried that.

Any solutions which require getting into the BIOS won't work because the laptop doesn't post.

well, the full mother board comes with CPU and GPU as they arte soldered on it ( if I am not mistaken) which means that the price would be pretty high....have you called XoticPC and asked them about fixing it or about pricing? do you still have warranty?

No, I'm not under warranty, and haven't had the chance to contact Xotic yet. I'm assuming that if I send it to Xotic they'll replace the motherboard which is why I was asking about the price.

Give them a call, it is much better than send it in. Discuss with them about what will be your options and take it from there. I would not recommend to do anything to the laptop or try to fix it if you absolutely know what you are doing, as you might damage it even more.

    Good luck!

P.S. - I am expecting a new member in the family :D got a decent price for:
    MSI GT73VR 17.3" UHD / i7-6820HK / 32GB / 1TB+ 2x128GB SSD / GTX 1070 (around 1300euros)
what do you guys say? :D Should I go for it? :D

I would say the same about the CPU 6820HK vs my 4710HQ , and it comes on an MXM platform which means I can later upgrade to single /dual 1080 or dual 1070

All in all, I think that is a good price(right?)... that is the reason why I am leaning towards it :D

The 1080 on that platform is a different layout to the 1070 IIRC so it would need a new heatsink too.

question. What is the best quality/performance wireless network card for our dear laptop? i have an intel 8260 i've been using for a while now and i pretty much abused the heck out of both the wifi and bluetooth on it, and they're starting to throw errors every now and then. So it is time for me to upgrade the poor little thing.

The 8265 upgrade won't do much... only MIMO support.
It seems weird that you have errors thrown after usage of the card.

Anyone know what's up with prema mod . There's no more options to download it.
Is there any way to get it right now?

Also can anyone tell me what drivers you guys are using for the GTX970m for overclocking?

Prema took a holiday and took his site down after his work was leaked and distributed/sold without his consent.

There are no high capacity battery options.
