Sorry I thought it might be better here with the same laptop for help. Just uninstalled xtu and ran tjrottlestop. Seems a lot more complicated. Anyway set 4.2ghz and - 170mV. and 117w don't know how to change the iccmax yet but I tried a GPU bench and the same is still happening. Only getting upto about 50c when it starts. It obviously must be the draw on my system when the GPU is working and is pushing the motherboard past it current limit. It even happens at stock 4.0ghz. This must be a fault with the p771dm-g as well then.

It was fixed in Prema's firmware on the P870DM. And it is best to ask in the forum of the laptop you own or in specific threads for overclocking, etc. Asking about your machine in another machine's forum is bad. But you can read and get info from other similar devices by reading them, just don't derail the thread by asking about another machine in the wrong forum.

With that said, you will NOT fully be able to rid yourself of this issue until using different firmware, if memory serves. Matrix, mr. Fox, and a couple others all discussed this issue there. It is not a power supply issue! There were ways that throttlestop helped, if memory serves, but I didn't think that was the full solution, just helped alleviate it. (I could be wrong, don't own that machine, just follow the thread). As I can't remember all details, I just recommend to read it...

Technically I am. Not asking in the wrong thread as this one is laptop specific and the clevo overclocking thread is exactly what I and trying to achieve :) but I will keep it just to the overclocking thread now.
It sounds like this is a common clevo laptop issue then!!!!

No, it is an issue with Skylake desktop cpu Clevo units. I don't know of your firmware is fully updated, your level of expertise, etc. Meanwhile, this was not an issue on the ZM model and the 4790K! So please do not interpret this as effecting all platforms from Clevo!

Edit: not trying to insult with the expertise statement, just it can be hard helping to troubleshoot without knowing what the person knows to try, etc.

No offence taken. I would class myself as a novice mate. My firmware is fully updated as of about 2 weeks ago when I did it. And I am reasonably happy with the process of overclocking/undervolting. Well I was until I installed throttlestop :)

Once Prema releases the UEFI (bios) for this machine, set the overclock settings there. Until then, learning throttlestop will do you better in the long run for overclocking and avoids some of the crappiness of XTU. XTU is solely for benching and monitoring, as papusan mentioned. I cannot remember if stock bios or throttlestop allows for ram settings, if not, use XTU if you want to overclock your ram. Note, this can make the system unstable even if it passes memtest86+, so if it is unstable and crashes more after overclocking ram, first set that back to stock to see if it continues. If it doesn't crash, that is your issue, if it does, then go through other troubleshooting. But this is getting off in general techniques. Read the p870dm thread, the enthusiasts are all over there and detailed their work on mods and overclocking the 6700K, so entirely relevant for techniques on the DM.

I probably won't use a Prema BIOS as this will unfortunately void my warranty, and I'm not too bothered about overclocking the ram. I will have a read of the 870dm thread to see if there's any good tips. Thankyou

In the future, give consideration to Prema partners so you can keep your warranty and have the benefits of more control. As you class yourself as a novice, this is all new and you have an amazing machine to learn on! Personally, I am in a class that has done quite a few mods, then went into sub zero temps to reach over 5ghz. But I'm a different type of enthusiast. 4.5ghz is my standard after mods. With the heatsink you have, if you decide to lap it mod it, check out the ZM threads (both 750 and 770) to get an idea on these. They also have general tips and jaybee83 gives a basic idea for overclocking (although you need the p870 thread to understand the additional nuances of added volting options in Skylake). But I wish you well in your clocking pursuits! :)

Ram overclocking is more for the benchmarkers and those with IGPs, as otherwise it makes very little difference.

I think the purpose was to show overclocking the CPU gives greater advantages compared to faster ram.

I think I misread the charts a little, though I think that test is a best case for memory scaling. Flying around GTAV like that will have a lot of caching going on.

Somebody played Overwatch on the DM? i noticed when i had Gsync activated it stuttered like i was playing with 30fps, even when i triplechecked i was at 100hz, deactivating Gsync fixed it, weird is that with a desktop pc and using a gsync screen the issue didn't appear, both latest drivers.

In the past couple of days i have been having an intermittent issues with wake from sleep where the screen won't turn back on.
I think I've tried all the possible key combination to turn the screen back on but without any results, so i would have to force a shutdown by holding the power button (scary considering i am booting from a 950 pro raid0).

i know the laptop is on because i hear my notifications come through on the speakers and all the led lights are blinking as they should, but the screen will not turn back on from sleep if leave it to sleep for a few hours while plugged in.

anyone else experience this issue or know of a solution?

isnt the current dual channel ram the bottleneck of cpu if a software is capable of taking advantage of all cores?

It depends on the program and a couple other things. The hard drive can still bottleneck, the ram, the cpu itself. I'd have to know the specific program to give that answer, the ram speed, the cpu speed, etc. Ram is always the last to be upgraded as it will have the last effect. That is because, whatever the slowing down by the ram, unless because you do not have enough ram, it is not usually the bottleneck. This does not mean you will not have an improvement, such as going from 32,000mb/s to 54,000mb/s in quad channel. That you would feel quite a bit (As far as ram improvements go, I.e. Overclock ram speed vs quad channel, not going to go crazy on user noticeable feel, like hdd to ssd or going to a much better cpu (added upon editing comment)). 28 going to 34-35, not so much on user experience, but you might get a small boost in benchmarks. Rather, your CPU speed itself makes a larger difference, unless doing larger image or video editing or similar activities. It has to be something that benefits significantly from ram speed or size for most to be noticeable. At that point, creating a ram drive because the ssd or hard drive is the bottleneck makes more sense (In certain applications, specifically those that require more bandwidth and the ssd or hdd are the bottleneck, which is not all use cases (edited later, still not where I want this answer to be on clarity)). Sorry, I just woke up and haven't had my coffee, so not sure I explained this well enough.

    1) it's not primarily the bottleneck, even in heavily multi threaded applications.
    2) everyone benefits from quad channel because it practically doubles the bandwidth throughput, hence why they should, but do not, support it on every consumer chip and motherboard with four slots. (This is usually to save on costs for the MB, testing, etc. As well as Intel not allowing support to incentivize purchase of the extreme edition if you are looking for these benefits. (Edited)).

This is top of my head and without me being fully awake, so please correct me if I forgot something or stated it incorrectly.

Does anyone know the difference between these laptops from Pro-star?

    P750DM
    P750DM-G
    P750DM-GS

The only difference I could find was price and the G-sync is on the second and third configuration. The G-sync model is about $150 cheaper.
    What other differences are there?

    Thanks

Those look like the same core system, just different screen and the GS has some upgrades. Similar how Sager has their -S models with some upgrades done at a discounted rate.

then at this point, i guess the only bottleneck would be ssd at qd1 performance which can easily be replaced when optane comes around with 5-7x the qd1 performance. when that happens it would be cpu bottlenecking, more like software unable to take advantage of newer cpu instruction thats bottlenecking the whole system.

I have (had?) exactly the same problem. I would close the laptop, it would sleep, open it, it would wake up but the screen would remain blank. For me, it was not intermittent, it was always. But now it seems to have stopped and not really sure why. What did I do to fix it? Not really sure. I fiddled around in the power settings (where everything seemed fine). I turned off hibernation in the cmd window (but thought it was already off). Now it doesn't do it any more. Good luck.

yes, it would technically be the CPU speed limiting at that point or the motherboard. Motherboard, type of ram, size of ram, etc. may play a roll, but you can speed the other components enough that the CPU cannot keep up with other components. You have to also consider bandwidth saturation, but that isn't as likely. I don't want to go into every hypothetical though. Now I'll state DDR3 has half the bandwidth of DDR4. Also, I'd point you to looking at the HBM and 4GB on FuryX compared to the larger amount of ram on the 980 Ti and TitanX. There were only four games that were ram limited. Why? Because of the bandwidth and the speed of the HBM. It was able to move the calls and frames in and out of memory faster than GDDR5. That is an example of how better bandwidth, lower latency, etc. can allow less ram to accomplish the same tasks, and of how ram can become a bottleneck. In general, just get enough ram for your purposes. If you need more, get more. But ram is the last thing to upgrade for optimization (except in a few circumstances). CPU, GPU (depending on system), MB (depending on system, but not as important unless extreme OC or needing features that others do not have), SSDs all have greater effects on performance. 2-4% is average on ram benefits, depending on jump from what you had before (it can even be under 2% if not that great of a jump). The exception is doing ram intensive activities and not having enough, which then creates a bottleneck and slows down everything, can cause errors, freezes, etc. These also can occur with faulty components though, so know what your issue is, monitor and troubleshoot. I just went to 32GB DDR3 sodimms because I was filling up 16GB while working. You could feel the slow down, among other things. For an average user, 16GB is enough. I don't want you to run out spending money willy nilly just to fix non-existent issues. If you have a need (or just want to maximize your rig for self-gratification or bragging rights), then by all means, put the balls to the wall on your rig. But your comments seem you are looking for an edge not effecting you. If that is the case, stop looking for the edge!!! Instead, take a look at your rig and what is available (or will become available in a certain period of time) and your budget and upgrade those components. You don't need a justification more than maximizing the rig so that you have nowhere to go on upgrades. At that point, you need to find a new project to scratch that itch or be satisfied knowing your rig cannot be better and outperforms all same or substantially similar rigs (hence bragging rights). Look at my signature for the over 5.0ghz benches I did. That is bragging rights. Your 3920xm at 4.7GHz, that's bragging rights! You seem like a guy that likes to upgrade and push his hardware. I appreciate that. But playing hypotheticals on bottlenecks to try to find the limits isn't going to do you justice. Me, I have little upgrade room on my rig. I'll be getting an NVMe drive after the market goes down with the release of competitors to Samsung. Other than that, my rig is one of the best of this model. With the DM, you have to have 2 NVME drives or optane drives (initial tests have in the same class, just different techs), a 6700K (or 7700K for Kaby lake, due 2H 2016), new video card, maybe faster DDR4 over 3.0GHz as it becomes available (or OC to 2800-3200 yourself) and 64GB (or larger if 32GB sodimms are introduced, allowing for a very nice sized ram disk on your rig, although 64 GB can allow for 16GB system and 48GB ram disk), etc. Heat is the limiter on the CPU for pushing it. Other than those, ENJOY YOUR RIG!!! Looking for ghosts to excuse purchases isn't productive, unless the ghosts exist (don't know your uses). Otherwise, recognize the limits, look at the nanovacuum tubes and other terahertz level transistors and the upcoming adoption of optical integration into motherboards and processors which will jump what we know so greatly that what we are doing now will look small!

DDR4 does not pump the bus anymore compared to DDR3 so at the same speed (and timings) they would perform the same.

It's GDDR5 (and 5X) that do double the pumping of the bus (at the expense of a lot of latency).

is the samsung 950pro compatible for the 770dm? if yes i am assuming i hook it up the same as a m.2 ssd? i am currently on a 850evo m.2 ssd. Prices are kinda steep so i was thinking of picking up the 256gb only just for os and a few games.

I just received a 750DM-G, and I am having an issue with it. I cannot get the it to boot from a USB stick or a USB DVD drive. Each time I try to boot from either media, I get a "Recovery" screen where it says: Your PC needs to be repaired. There isn't enough memory available to create a ramdisk device. Error code: 0x0000017

As far as I can tell I have switched everything over from UEFI to Legacy. I have CSM enabled. I may have missed a setting in the BIOS, but how do I boot from either of these devices?

Did you switch the boot order in the same menu? You need the usb plugged in before you start. There should be a list. Switch from accessing Windows boot first or the hard drive to usb as the first option (or if it reads as two, put both ahead of Windows boot). Then try it. I don't know enough of your setup or if you are pressing for the boot options menu. Turn off all fast boot options. One is in that menu with csm, the other is in advanced. Turn off secure boot for the moment.

Edit: if that doesn't work, check the usb settings under both the advanced tab and the one by it (the one by it, go into dmi sub menu, etc.) I don't know if you're on a stock or filly unlocked bios (Prema bios) or what options are available to you, so I'm giving general areas and troubleshooting advice. I'm a zm owner with lots of knowledge on the general topic.

I have tried switching the boot order to the USB devices, as well as pressing F7 at startup and selecting it manually. Neither one works. I am on the Prema bios.

Did you try testing defaults in the bios, then moving forward. Also, is the usb setup for boot or the dvd? If it is not, that is part of the problem. Make sure secure boot, fast boot and the Intel fast boot are all disabled. If you are doing a Windows install from a usb, may I suggest rufus for formatting the usb and loading the image into it. Ms-dos or free dos may make the difference. Also, the usb may be setup for a uefi boot instead of a legacy boot. As I said, I don't yet have enough info. If all of that doesn't work, pull the hard drive and see if it boots to the usb. If it doesn't with the proper bios settings, then it is the usb or configuration of the usb. It is currently trying to pull the os off the drive and throw it into a ram disk. Resetting the bios may help. But the fact it is ignoring the usb suggests you messed up creating it or it is made for all uefi, no legacy. I don't even know the Windows version, if it is a Windows version, you are trying to install. Also, whether the usb is uefi gpt setup or mbr. The hardware is set to read mbr over gpt (although not sure if the usb mbr would override the hard drive....

I think I got it figured out. It wasn't the settings in the BIOS. Both media that I was trying to boot from did not contain the proper drivers that would allow for the media to boot when connected.

    Thanks for your help!

No problem. Sometimes just talking it out helps to get to the solution. I started with the media, but thought about, and didn't mention, the drivers. Glad you got it!

Last night I placed my order for a P753dm-gs with Pro-Star! After having used ThinkPads for the last 6 years, I have decided it is time for a switch to something else. My current w541 has a screen that just bugs me to no end. I have to look directly at it from the mid-line or the edges darken. That and it actually gets bogged down just looking online (flash player seems to grind it to a halt, which I hate!).

I am hoping things will be much improved with the new laptop! :)

Are you trying to mod the driver or just a plain install?

I just installed no issue, except it did not offer to install physics... So a little confused by that...
