    For now none of it is really publicly available.

    @Prema may look at this and could reach out to you if he feels like it.

    hmmmm bad timing at the moment id say :/ Prema retreated from public support only recently due to unauthorized leaks of his work and some additional undisclosed issues.
    as for the 980M vbios mod, it indeed unlocks the gpu and provides it with a performance boost even at stock clocks when compared to the stock vbios. it was publicly available on his website, but he set it to private for the time being, so only a few chosen ones still have access.
    which 980M version do you have? with or without gsync? i could MAYBE help you out here since i still have the 980M vbios mod saved up locally, but Id first want the ok from @Prema. its all a bit difficult and chaotic at the moment, so could potentially need some time for things to settle down again...

    Thanks both for the responses. It looked like something chatoic was going on, I hope everyone is OK physically and legally etc.

    @jaybee83 I have the 980m WITH G-Sync. I certainly understand and respect you wanting to get the OK from Prema first, if indeed you have the right version that can help me out.

    So it sounds like one way or another I wait for the dust to settle and keep my fingers crossed! Thanks gents.

    Hello,

    So it's been almost a month on my powerful XMG U706, thought I'd write here something.

    Regading the dead sub-pixel issue I mentioned on posts #4491, #4493 and #4495 (on page 450 - 3 weeks ago). I contacted XMG, they were polite and professional. I ended up deciding not to RMA the laptop. It's just a tiny thing barely visible.

    Windows 7 compatibility is still a deal breaker for me. When Windows 7 loses support (I am a Windows 10 hater), I'll probably install Windows 8.1 and then move to Linux. My primary need is virtualization, gaming is occasional (Counter Strike 1.6, GTA San Andreas or Mafia II...).

    My former daily driver (February 2012): Toshiba L750 i5-2430M GT520M-1G 8GB-RAM 15.6" (1366x768) Windows 7.
    My newer daily driver (31 May 2017): XMG U706 / Clevo P771DM-G i5-6600k GT970M-6G 16GB-RAM 17.3" (1920x1080) Windows 7.

    This comparison is by no means fair as the technology today has evolved light-years since I bought my first laptop.

    • CPU:
      • Double the cores, same threads, higher clock speeds, relatively similar heat production;
      • 50-70% performance increase.
    • Graphics:
      • Recent generation, 6x the RAM;
      • 300-500% performance increase.
    • RAM:
      • Higher frequency, updated standard, twice the amount;
      • 80-100% performance increase.
    • HDD:
      • Moved my 2.5" 9.5mm drives from Toshiba to XMG:
        1) WDC 7200rpm 750GB SATA III (For OS and Data);
        2) TOSHIBA 5400rpm 640GB SATA II (For virtual machines and other work);
      • Protip: I've placed the 7200rpm drive on the deeper slot which is near the vent, otherwise temperatures would skyrocket under load;
      • On Toshiba I placed a smaller 320GB HDD, and restored the DVD drive.
    • Networking:
      • Qualcomm/Atheros on both (New is Killer branded) - I have a personal preference for Qualcomm network adapters;
      • 1gbps LAN/Wireless AC (Previous 100mbps/Wireless N).
    • Screen:
      • Colors are by far more vivid on XMG U706 IPS panel.
    • Temperatures (Average under light usage and maximum under heavy loads):
      • Toshiba:
        CPU 44-74ºC
        GPU 44-78ºC
        HDD 32-45ºC
      • XMG:
        CPU 41-70ºC
        GPU 44-60ºC
        HDD 40-54ºC

    Regards,
    Jorge Manuel Silva

    Incase anyone here was wondering if the EK-M.2 NVMe heatsink would fit in this chasis without modification it's a no.

    Mounts fine in the M.2 slot to the rear of the CPU fan but would require removing one of the rear panel clips to get the rear panel back on.

    So I have this laptop, but I have a few questions about upgrading it...

    1) It has TB3, but can it support an eGPU?
    2) If it can't, is it possible to upgrade the dGPU (980M in my case) to say a 1070? They both use MXM 3.0 but can't find a solid answer.
    3) Is it possible to upgrade the display to one that supports 120Hz? G-sync or not would not matter.

    Thanks!

    1) Yes I believe people have got it to work, though usually the performance penalty of TB3 hits more than the internal card performs.

    2) With an MSI card it has been done to take it to a 1070.

    3) With your IPS screen at those clocks is it really worth it? But it depends on the connector.

    I see. I am thinking of selling mine but I just wanted to check current upgrade-ability. I guess financially it wouldn't make much stench anyway since a 1070 MXM card is like $1000 CAD....

    Anyone wanna buy a good gaming laptop? :p

    Hey Meaker, regarding the 120hz display possibility,
    If they both used eDP is should work right? Also, is 30 pin the only eDP connection type or is there 40 pin it whatever as well?

    If they use the same eDP connector, are the same thickness, have the same connector placement and the same mounting holes then yes. G-sync will be lost if moving from a G-sync display.

    Coffee lake might introduce a six core lga1151 cpu with a 95w tdp. Do you think a p751dm-g will be able to run it with a bios update?

    forget the MSI 1070, it's too big and it requires some modding for it to work such as some case modding and the removal of the M.2 slot in the P775DM-G. Removing components that are standard is not a good idea from a technically and from a resale standpoint.

    The Gecube 1070 is busted with a power delivery flaw. Zotac 1070 has an incompatible EC.

    The closest that would potentially work is the MSI 1060 because it requires no case modding and it's more powerful than the 980M but just under the 980DT. with some modding of the vBIOS you could probably get the 1060 to perform like the desktop 1060.

    TL: DR don't bother with the 1070 if you don't have the balls to do any modding.

    ^^ This. I gave up hope with upgrading the gpu but I never thought they'd abandon us on the CPU side too.

    The first company to release a socketed Ryzen and Vega will get my money next year (or two), even if its not CLEVO.

    @jaybee83 @Meaker@Sager

    Digging through some drive backups, I found an archive entitled GTX980M-G_8GB_MXM_DM_OC_PM_V2 ... Is this perchance the Prema vBios mod about which I'd inquired a couple of pages back? Must have grabbed it before the site was locked down and totally forgotten about it.

    Anyway, the reason I'm checking is because when I attempted to run the flash, I got the following error:

    This error is kind of expected.
    Just make sure you have used GPU-Z to backup of your vbios in case something went wrong.

    The outside is maybe nice, but the most important is that laptop is owned by @Mr. Fox with @Prema bios, with all that means, for the great tuning and efforts to make it more valuable than any laptop in it's class. Thanks as well for @Prema for allowing me to have his unique BIOS created by him for this laptop.

    Easiest way to be sure is to look up the panels hardware ID in device manager, that will tell you the exact panel model and the connector.

    I have the NP9778-S with killer wifi, and the wifi keeps dropping. I thought I could replace the wifi with an intel, but I cant seem to locate the m.2 card/slot for the swap.

    Can anyone help?

    Hey guys, had my p75dm for almost a year now. Starting to get crashes when playing games. No oc besides vbios defaults from prema. Tried to pinpoint issue. Initially, I thought it was power related because my charger just dies even though its still plugged in and getting power, need to disconnect and reconnect it. Thought it was a charger issue, replaced it, same issue. Tried stress testing cpu, mem, nothing. I turned on furmark and my pc crashes consistently every time within 1-10 seconds. Not a thermal issue, never hit temps above 70, just changed paste. Tried changing voltage but nothing, tried unplugging all my usb and monitor inputs, still crashes. Playing games like The Division, R6 Siege or GW2, crashes after around maybe 30 min. I don't know if its a power distribution issue or the gpu itself. Could be entirely wrong though, any input would be helpful. Thanks. Its a 6700k and 980M-G btw.

    Could be a VRM cooling issue if a pad is not quite right but if you have not touched the heatsink that is unlikely. Have you tried fresh drivers and doing a clean install?

    Still on default pads, didn't touch them at all. Just changed thermal paste. Tried fresh install recently but I'll try again.

    Ok, this time, it lasted maybe 15 sec in furmark. Seems like same issue but this time, something different happened. Charger didn't lose power on LED, PC battery LED was green, Power LED was Orange, turned on, black screen for maybe 2 min and then starts flashing orange on the power and beeping. Had to unplug charger to fix it again.
