My galaxy note3 is a beast on this forum
I don't use any mobile version though, a quad core cpu, 3GB of ram and a 1080p screen are more than enough for the desktop experience

the main issue is not performance, it's the stinking 4K resolution on a small screen and the crappy DPI scaling of Windows. Combined those 2 and you get an absolute failure of a screen. -
Do not listen to this heretic
. I takes time but its possible to setup proper scaling for your apps.

I'd deal with the rest.

yes I actually loved the 1600x900 resolution the most. Had that on an old ASUS G73Sw laptop. That's the best size, no scaling, everything big and nice

OK, you lost me on that one. I can't be happy with 900p screens even if it is a really high quality screen. I have a low tolerance for less than 1080p, but mainly because I do a lot of work with Excel and other Microsoft Office apps and having the most usable screen space possible is very valuable. For that reason I use multiple displays for work. I'd rather have one gigantic screen with tons of usable real estate because I don't care for multi-monitor that much. If 4K at 100% scaling was usable on a laptop-sized screen I would not hate it so much. If I could scale it to 1080p at 100% with no loss of quality I would also be fine with it, but I have never seen a laptop 4K screen that looks acceptable at 1080p... all of them I have used look horrible when set that way. When I have to run more than 100% to a maximum of 125% scaling for text to be comfortably readable, 4K ceases to offer any value for me. At 200% scaling, I think it's a waste of money because all you are really gaining is performance-killing pixel density, and for me that is not important. Even something as simple as posting benchmark screen shots with all the required validation windows open on the desktop is a bad deal on anything under 1080p. The new 3DMark bloated UI really sucks now and you need every bit of usable screen real estate possible.
If 120Hz would somehow make tiny text comfortable readable with 4K at 100% scaling on a laptop monitor, I might reconsider it, but only if it can also be scaled down to 1080p at 100% whenever I might want to do that without looking really terrible. That's really, by far, the worst aspect of 4K laptop screens. They only look good run at native 4K and everything is too tiny on a 4K laptop screen at 100% scaling. Maybe as the technology matures some of those functionality issues will improve, but right now it's pretty disgusting.DreDre, ajc9988 and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

About smartphones and such, I always buy the biggest I can get, my eyes cannot accept a smaller one.
Maybe Ill get black berry thingy with touch, android and qwerty next.
I am programming and seriously writing from a phone... You want to know how I do it ? I attach an OTG then attach a keyboard to it. I can't wait for a bigger phone or something to make my work easier. I end up keeping the thing at a few cm from my face to properly use it. I'm not entirely happy, but it is better than completely without .
Do you want to know how bad people can get?
In Romania, people advertise over FB an app for Android in which you enter your car and car number, to communicate with other drivers you don't know... during traffic. I would seriously ask those people if either they also have another type of business, or just want to see the world burn. How can one sleep at night writing an app to use only during traffic?
About 4K screens in laptops, I most certainly would enjoy a 30" screen more, but sometimes you have to go portable, and most 4K screens for laptops have that super color space coverage and extremely good color calibration. I need it for game and software development. I can tweak any OS down the under - kernel levels. I can run 4K and laptop happily, but yeah, until better support comes, it should be avoided.
Also, windows 10 without protection aka kernel tweaking, OS cutting everything that is not needed, OS reconstruction, and a lot over a lot of modifications is unbearable.Chronokiller, ajc9988 and oveco like this. -

Hm... there is note 5 or something and... I need bigger screen.
I am using HTC 820. It is a 5.5" screen phone, pretty big. Very resilient, never had a problem with it, the display is still small to work with big documents or to do programming on the go. -

I recommend you the HTC 10 if you want Android or iPhone 6S Plus if you want iOS. I'd stay away from Samsung personally due to their horrible standby time when it comes to battery life and slow updates -
I need the biggest screen I can find on market.
Plus, I am not afraid of installing custom ROMs, I was overclocking a poor LG P690 when I used to have one, and I was running android much better than it was supposed to have
And as far as color management goes, I am sure that Samsung is better.
Well, I loved my experience with HTC, and surely would want to continue working with them, but am not going to go to a smaller display, I need the biggest I can find on market, I need to fast edit things while out and about.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

Speaking of 4k monitors, has anyone seen this new display from Dell?
http://www.engadget.com/2016/05/23/dell-43-inch-quad-monitor/
It would reduce the footprint of 4 separate 1080p monitors.
I'm currently running the Acer Predator x34 Gsync 3440x1440 @100Hz. Best monitor I've ever owned so far. Scaling at 100% is perfect.
One thing that drives me crazy at work is when the Administrative folks want bigger monitors, which typically support higher resolutions (even 4K), then they change the display to something silly like 1024x768. -
I never understood why 3k was abandoned so fast. 3k on a 17" would have been looking great also in terms of scalability. Afaik @jaybee83 is sporting one in his Batman and seems to be very happy with it.

No, they did skip that resolution for panels which is annoying personally.
-
Put in 4K panel and OEMs and Ngreedia can milk you a bit longer. You need still a better graphics for 4K than single mobile/desktop Pascal can give you.bloodhawk likes this.

Nothing stops you gaming at 1080p on a 4k display if you want to.
bsch3r likes this. -
This is true. But many will still game with standard screen resolution from old habit. They think this is the best solution. 1080 / 1440p is still preferable with Pascal. 1440p would be a good replacement for 1080P whether you gaming or not.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this.

for a laptop, anything over 1080P is not acceptable for me.. Way too small and having a 4K screen then choosing to game @ 1080P defeats the point of having a 4K screen. Also the screen will be blurry and not sharp due to not running at the native resolution.godfafa_kr and Papusan like this. -

That is why screen options will remain a thing
-
This totally. I've always got the highest resolution screen I could find. I don't care about native screen res when gaming, I actually prefer not to use native as I call it "free antialiasing"
I find at these high resolutions I can play at 1080, 1440 and 4k and enjoy it just the same, so I crank up the settings to ultra and play as high res as I can. Gsync helps being able to play higher than normal. Nothing worse than being stuck at 1080p@60 with all settings cranked and not being able to go any higher. It's like a Cobra Mustang with a 80mph speed limiter on it.
On the desktop I love 4k, I can have 4x 1080 windows and watch a movie while I'm checking emails, or working on spreadsheets and doing file transfers etc. I can have it all up and monitor the other jobs when I do another, all while watching a movie too. I'm so used to multi-monitors that when I'm down to a single one I need to be able to work without alt-tabbing windows every 5 seconds.Spartan@HIDevolution, Georgel and Prema like this. -
If only it had HDMI 2.0. A 4K samsung tv can be had for around the same price in 48" and 55" flavors.
I've been eyeing that monitor but don't think it'll upscale 1080p content from other sources (besides pc) as good as those 4k tvs.
The lower input lag is nice though. -
When it comes to upgrading, how is it that people are dropping unsupported GPUs into older chassis? I'm likely going to be dropping a pair of 1080Ms in my P870 at some point if it's possible, but I've also heard that Clevo may be putting out new refreshes this year before the 1080Ms arrive. How are people installing them without a matching heatsink? Does it involve sanding them down and then using shims to bridge the gaps?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
They tend to get a matching heatsink or re-organise pads if the heatsink let's you.

Hello everyone, long-time lurker, first time poster with a rather simple question. What laptop coolers are people placing their NP9870-g on? There doesn't seem to be too many choices available for machines of this size? I primarily plan on having it sit on a desk while working (audio/video editing), but may occasionally have it on top of a lapdesk/sheet of diamondplate aluminium for a bit of couch gaming. With any luck, I should receive the machine in the next week or so, so I'm trying to get all the odds and ends together I need to hit the ground running when it arrives. Well, running once it arrives and i install memory, ssds, OS, and other software...

It looks like it could work, albeit it looks a bit tacky. Do the legs and tabs that hold the laptop from sliding feel stable? I'd think I'd have one of these broken in the first month.
-
The bottom fans wont do anything with the bottom cover on tbh. There aren't any vents there for air to flow. That is one of the reasons why people prefer the U3.Papusan likes this.
-
A vey Tragic cooler design. You must turn the cooler completely around for it to be used. Fans in botten is useless and only 1 fan in the middle up. Is there any laptops with most of the vents in the bottom?
@Firebat246 A amazing crippled cooler. One of the worst I'v seen!!Spartan@HIDevolution and Georgel like this. -
I have been suing notepal something something which let's the user place the fans wherever he needs.
I took out the fans, only use it for good airflow.
I still think that fan in middle is not the best, especially if position is fixed there, it would actually block airflow. -
Its the best cooler I have ever used. You will get much better results if you modify the bottem cover taking out all the foil inserts that cover up the vents. That's something you should do anyways. Doing that paired with this cooler it doesn't matter how much I push my gpu's they simply never overheat.
-
I'm telling you first hand it works great with this laptop. I even posted results of the difference. Again my bottem is modified with foil removed. Without modification to laptop cover I can see having different results. But I have tested with and without and there is a big difference. Would I be opposed to trying others? Not at all.. but not until I have overheating issues.. and i'm far off from that!Last edited: May 30, 2016
