I ran throttle stop and it said cpu not supported, and yesterday when testing 980m OC i cant even hit 200mhz with a 50mv increase..i dont get this, seems everyone can a least get that stable. I should have just gotten the 980 desktop card, i folowed pheniox'es guide for 4.5ghz and that seems to be stable, just the gpu is all i would like to go higher
-
You need @Prema BIOS for your machine to be 100% functional. He did some special magic to unlock some things that ThrottleStop needs to access. The stock Clevo BIOS is locked down like Fort Knox on steroids and sucks like there is no tomorrow... crippled and tighter than a gnat's posterior orifice. Until he makes a public version available, probably best to hold off on trying to do anything special and just use it stock for now. Otherwise, you're probably going to stay frustrated.

Yeah, you would want to contact your seller where it was purchased from. It's been mentioned before that the Y adapter is becoming harder to find, so you might need to check with multiple Clevo sellers to find one.
-
It will depend on your heatsink, i had disappointing results ith Ge Lid GCE and ICD both, but amazing results with Kryonaut, but others had it the other way around. So you will have to try.Papusan and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

I have a Prema bios already... That's how I was able to follow phenix guide on overclocking to 4.5.. So idk what's going on.. -

That's why I advised you to post your question in the overclocker's lounge!
1) to get better support with your concern
2) in order to not flood this thread with overclocking posts and make it busier and more confusing than it already is -

how's the build quality like? i am still waiting for metabox to update my order status because june 30 is the end of the finanical year here in australia and it's so BS...would rather have it follow the calendar year.
-
Pretty bad to be honest. One of my eye lashes accidentally scratched the screen
-
it's not THAT bad? that might just be the 4k screen cos i ordered the 1080p screen....will have to see when it arrives.
-
Nope, even the body is very sensitive. You touch it and it gets marked. I have both screens though.
Im joking bruh, the build is pretty darn good.Last edited: Jul 1, 2016jaybee83 likes this. -
You almost had me regretting buying this then. I'm in the same position as thegh0sts waiting on the bios and delivery.
-
Well my eyelashes have never had an opportunity to touch my laptop, but beyond that I would call the build quality nice and solid. It is plastic mind you, but feels strong and it's easy to get to the internals. I don't carry mine around much but when I do move it I don't feel like its going to break, or crack or anything like that. Screen feels nice and firm. I feel like it will last a long time (but even my 20 year old compaq presario laptop still works
)

Sorry, the first reply wasn't exactly me. Left my workstation unattended on a Friday evening at work when happy hour is going on.
But yeah, you guys dont need to worry about the build. Its very good. Not Alienware metal chassis good, but very good.
DONT judge me man.Mr. Fox likes this. -
I wasnt too worried about the build quality. If its anything like my old P170EM then I'll be happy.
Only problem I ever had with it was the little rubber feet fell off and got lost. -

I'd say we stepped it up to the next level over the EM series overall.

who did you order from?
-
Kong computers in NSW.
I'd probally have it by now if i didnt ask for the @Prema BIOS.
I looked at all the resellers and it was mostly the same price +/-$50.
Who did you go through? -
Brother @thegh0sts - Build quality is good. Agree with @bloodhawk revised comment, @Porter and @Meaker@Sager as well. It's rock solid. It's not pre-BGA Alienware grade build quality, but nothing anywhere is that good, including their own products. It is as close as you can get with plastic. I'd prefer metal of course, but I can tell you it's really good and I DO NOT miss any of my Alienware systems... no regrets. This is the best high performance laptop I have ever owned, hands-down. Sorry you're having to wait because of the fiscal year change. It's always hard to wait and days seem to drag on, but you're going to be happy real soon.

i ordered direct from metabox. kinda worried that it's still sitting on order initiated though.
-
So... is the display easy to scratch or not?
-
980M can be hit or miss... I run my 6700K 4.8 GHz + maxed OC on 980 desktop version = +410w from a single 330w(this with the screen nearly turned of) in bench. I think the first batch of 980M can be better than the latest. But 980 desktop version is a better choice if you want to Overclock. To many have problems with a nice OC on 980M.Prema likes this.

The 980 desktop card has a much more robust power circuitry (3 times the power handling capability) than the 980M so slight differences in power draws between chips has less of an impact.

Guys, will this 4TB HDD work in my laptop? Amazon reviews say it's 15mm thick. My current Samsung Spinpoint 5400 RPM 2TB HDD is only 9.5mm thick

I just googled 4TB laptop HDD and that's the model that I got. I have my 2x 2TB HDDs setup as a single 3.6TB partition (spanned drive) but am seriously running out of space as my videos library is getting bigger every day. I have 190 GB left I really need more storage and I mean built in storage not some external HDD as I have a 6TB external HDD as a backup -
Yeah I've got them in my machine too in raid 0 though. All my games takes up about 2.5TB and my music stuff the rest. I recently got the Seagate 4tb portable external for my movies. They are only $120 on amazon now. It's not great having externals on a laptop but since it's just movies on there and doesn't require power I don't mind too much.
-
You and me both! I like having as much of my stuff as possible internal. That also makes backups super easy and I basically only have one large media drive and a few items on my OS drive to backup.
I've already resorted to tons of backups and ISO's on external only, I really don't want to have to start splitting my music/movies into internal + external drives. I've got hundreds of blurays and dvd's that I am waiting to rip until the 4TB SSD's become cheaper. At this point I would even consider going back to hard drives if 4Tb 9.5mm were available.
Also hoping 2TB M.2 SATA drives become available, or even PCIe if they stop making larger SATA ones.hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

My setup is:
1st 512GB 950 Pro = C: (100 GB) for the OS / D: (300 GB) for software setup EXEs, OneDrive folder which contains docs, music, pics,, ISOs
2nd 512 GB 950 PRO = E: (400 GB) for games
1st/2nd 2TB HDDs as a single partition F: for movieshmscott likes this. -

the reason I want everything internally is I go to cafe's daily and I take my laptop, I like having all my data with me wherever I go and don't like having to rely on external drives other than for backup purposes.hmscott likes this. -
@pheonix how are the 950 Pro nvme's ? Anything worth writing home about over a standard SSD other than benchmarks?
I'm temped the get one for the OS and applications. Damn expensive though. -
That makes sense. I love being able to grab my laptop and go without grabbing any cords or anything. I have an extra adapter and mouse in my backpack so it's really quick and I don't have to worry about forgetting anything.
My setup is:
2x1TB M.2 SATA in RAID 0 or OS and games (C drive)
2x2TB 2.5" SATA SSD's in RAID 0 for movies/music/shows/all of my GOG installers (D drive)
1x512GB SD card for my docs/backup saves/pics etc, basically all of my personal stuff (E drive)hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

One word.... Dont....
They are great in benchmarks and that's about it! Other than that, it feels no different to a standard SATA SSD. In fact, it's boot time is even slower due to the longer time it takes to initialize the NVMe controller. Additionally, it creates an additional complication, its drivers...
For example, when you first install Windows and want to create an image using Macrium Reflect or whatever backup program you want, but you want that image clean before installing any drivers, well, the image creation process will be very slow as the Samsung NVMe driver isn't installed yet. It doesn't work great out of the box with the Windows NVMe default driver. Come to install Windows 7, even more headaches but that's too long for me to write about here. Morale of the story, at this day and age, all SSDs are snappy enough, get the largest/cheapest option you can. -
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
ohhh I never thought of using the SD card, thank you for reminding me, can you link me to a good / fast SD card that's 512GB or more?
Also, how do you have 2x 1TB m.2 SATA ? who makes 1TB m.2 SATA?hmscott likes this. -
Sandisk makes one, I bought 3 of them back in January for my old GT80 and ran them in 3xRAID0. I kept two and sold the 3rd when I got the 870DM.
https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SD8SN8U-1T00-1122-X400-M-2-SSD/dp/B0194MV300
I ended up having to order mine from ebay since that amazon seller sent me the 2.5" versions and amazon screwed me on the return, lost $140 which amazon agreed to pay me back time and time again. They never did. The next few times they double ship an item to me I will keep them until their debt is paid to me.
Here is the 512GB SD card I have, but they have other brands available now like PNY. It works fine, it is a little slow but for an SD card you can't expect much more. That is why I placed my personal stuff on there, I don't need speed since they are all small files, and they don't change often. I also like the fact I can take it out in an instant and most of my personal files are in my hand. It will barely stick out, maybe 1mm or so. It doesn't cause me any problems going in and out of backpack or sleeve, but realize you can bump it by mistake. Having an extra 512GB was worth it to me.

no that's too much man, way too much -
I saw this some time ago about build.
Is there any real flaw in the build besides the somewhat flawed keyboard? Especially the 4k display: Does it have any known problems in construction? -
I dont find the keyboard flawed. And the build also doesn't have any thing wrong with it.
-
There were some users who had problems with keyboard, but thanks a lot for letting me know !
