Its a preference thing i guess. And its like a not so pretty friend, she cares and is a really nice person. Just give her time, im sure you will start to like her. xD

I agree with bloodhawk on both points. The only thing to note on the 4k display, is you are limited to 60 hz. If you're ok with that then it's an excellent display. If you prefer 100+hz then you will have to go with the 1080. Personally I think the 4k with g-sync is a great pair as it opens up many more games to 4k. I've played a bunch at 2560x1440 as well. I love having higher resolution options since many games easily play at ultra above 1080.Last edited: Jul 2, 2016

Quick question guys....if I am only running my CPU OC with running my 980m sli at stock... can I get away with one power brick and leave the second at home? Gonna be away at my other house for holidays...and really only want my laptop for hearthstone and a couple other non demanding games. Less to pack in my old alienware bag that barely fits everything.
-
Yes for sure. Under most circumstances even my OC desktop 980 and CPU OC still does fine on one brick.
*edit* I guess I should have asked if this was just for gaming and some normal loads or do you have a situation where you could be maxing both GPUs and the CPU? I ask because in my case I have never seen that in my uses. -
To be honest the couple games I'll play when I'm away would be Hero's of the Storm and hearthstone which both don't use sli. Hearthstone being just a card game is definitely no big deal. Hero's I'm pretty sure doesn't use SLI. So nothing crazy. Just wasted to be sure it's ok to roll with one on my 4.5ghz OC.
-
can't find anywhere that sells compatible 4k screens.
-
Well, almost all places are overpriced as it is.
I installed my 4K panel on my own and it costed me less than half of what any seller normally charges.
But i would suggest you wait on the 4k panel for now, there are better panels coming out soon and those will be way better. And if you really have to get the 4k panel, make sure you get the actual AUO panel, nothing else. The compatible panels are a hit or miss. -
In my opinion yes you will be fine. If you happen to want to go on a benchmark roll and stress CPU/GPU at same time, or do an extreme OC on GPUs maybe you would exceed one brick but I would not worry about it. I know I won't carry around two with me. The way I have mine setup I really only use two at home when benchmarking just to be safe. While my GPU can use upwards of 300w all by itself, my daily OC only uses about 250w, and normally the CPU uses 70w, those are peaks, and not usually at the same time.

With two cards if you start playing with voltage I would at least have a wall monitor to be sure what it is drawing.
-
where did you get a 4k panel?
-
If you're comfortable installing them yourself there's a number of them on eBay right now starting at about AU$190 - not sure if they have g-sync though
-
got any links or even a model number?
-
I just searched eBay using " P870DM" as a search term (was actually looking for a silicon keyboard protector at the time, and saw a number of Chinese sellers listing the 4K panels for our particular laptop too).
-
ah i see. do you need to replace the cable?
-
That is a bit more complicated, it's not so straight forward.
-
I got mine for Aliexpress, but its the same thing if you get it from eBay. Just make sure its not one of the "compatible/replacement" panels.
Yes, G-Sync will work, but only on system with the Prema BIOS.
Yeap here are a few :

And the cable that you will need is this one :

I actually have one for sale here :

Exactly.
Only attempt this if you know the way around electronics. And disassembling very tiny and fragile components. There is a video by Mr. Fox (and a crude one that i made) that shows how to take the system apart.Last edited: Jul 3, 2016Papusan, Spartan@HIDevolution and LittleBlackDuck like this. -

I don't think I have seen any 4K screens with GSync, as far as I can remember. -
-
I know HID puts gsync 4K in theirs, one of the reasons I went with them to begin with.Georgel likes this.

Systems with Prema BIOS support G-Sync on the 4k Display. There is one drawback though. You loose brightness control, the display is always at max brightness.Georgel likes this.

I use Dimscreen V1.1 to get back screen brightness. Technically I think it just adjust gamma as it looks funny when down at 10% but it still does the job for me. Keeps from blinding me in a dark room, or from the laptop screen being overpowering when I'm watching TV. @Mr. Fox recommended it a few pages back.
-
I'm in no rush to get 4k.

Just be sure not to spend any money on it at all until you're absolutely, 100%, totally certain you can live with it. I totally despise 4K resolution, especially on a tiny 17-inch notebook screen. Screens smaller than 17-inch are exponentially more miserable to use. I don't care how great the colors and sharpness of it might be, it's absolutely miserable and quite a few people that have gone 4K without knowing what they were getting themselves into regret it. Some people truly love it, some need it for a business purpose, but many hate it. I've had 4K screens on a number of laptops and hated it on all of them. Higher refresh rate won't fix the things I hate about it. The best way to find out without having a machine you can borrow to find out is to do an upgrade from 1080p. Hang onto the old parts so you can go back to 1080p and sell the 4K screen and eDP cable to someone else if you end up hating it.Last edited: Jul 3, 2016Georgel likes this.

Better cancel and order this one !
Nearly fell of my chair when i read this on eB...
But this is what i would call an unfortunate "miswriting ": it's 980M Sli !
Though the price ( 8569 $ ) could have been 1080 compatible...

Dang, that's ridiculous. I hate it when people don't respond promptly to emails or voice mail. It certainly doesn't make a person feel valued as a customer. Have you tried calling them on the phone?
-
I sent an email this morning though i have the suspicion they'll just say the same thing.

test machine below seems fine on 4k 200% (1080p scale)
some applications are impossible to read thoMr. Fox likes this. -
90% of the applications i use dont support high dpi displays. Its a PITA.
-
For me that just totally defeats the purpose of it. The nicest thing about having more than 1080p is you can fit more things on the screen. If you scale it to 200% you're left with a performance destroying resolution that looks like 1080p. I've also had a few games that try to rescale and can't, and they end up frozen, garbled or crash to the desktop and can't even run.
That's one of my biggest complaints. If I run it at my preferred 100% scaling text is too small, numerous applications don't support it, and at 200% you lose the benefits and some applications still don't support it. And, some things don't even try to scale right, they just get totally screwed up... in the worst case scenario unusable. Adobe CS3 is a good example. I've tried tweaks found on the internet and none work for me. There are like five cursors when I work in a CS3 window and the tool bar is too tiny to read or see anything clearly, even with 200% scaling. -
Well it did say you could exchange the 980m sli for the 1080m sli once it becomes available. 29th week of 2016.
Interesting.

Agreed. Luckily my sysdev people at work showed me a few workarounds to setup per app scaling for the apps what have issues. Its a one time fix, so i had to spend an hour or so setting it up. But me or any other user, really shouldn't have to.
Have you tried the manifest hack to scale it properly? -
I think I did, but I don't remember now. I think I tried and it didn't work.
At this point I don't have to care because I sent the Sky X9 with the 1080p and 4K screens back to Eurocom and I intentionally avoided 4K when I bought my own machine. -
Yeap, if i didnt need the wide gamut i would avoid it like plague.
All we really need is 1440p or 3K tops. -
Yeah, 2560 x 1440 120Hz or 144Hz would be awesome. But, I don't think anyone manufactures such a panel for notebooks.bloodhawk likes this.

I must say 1080p is pretty spot on for a 17" screen. I'm interested to see the refreshed 120hz panels. But even still it seems the current 1080p screens all seem to overclock pretty well. I can be happy with 100hz.
-
Yeap, problem is there arent any wide gamut displays for that resolution. Maybe its just easier to produce high res displays than FHD wide gamut displays.TBoneSan likes this.

Mine has been pushed back yet another day. It has been sitting at Metabox for a week now, completed, just waiting for @Prema to send them the vBios they need to flash it so they can box it up and ship.
-
What date is that? Mine is still sitting on July 5th.
EDIT: I gave them a call and they said my order was in production and they were waiting for @Prema to send them the updated vbios. Now my order has been updated to July 7th as the dispatch date.

Going from the AW17 4K IGZO to anything less would be difficult...
And the 870DM has fixed brightness 4K g-sync... hope it changes in the future to be a more refined solution -
To be fair, G-Sync is rather pointless on a 60Hz display running at 4k. And there is a workaround to give up G-Sync but get back brightness control. Its not public though.
-
I guess....
I'll wait until the pascal offerings come out, don't want to judge anything right now -
Just got an email that mine has been sent out and will be delivered on the 7th.........too bad I'm not home tll the end of the month
Its going to be a pain waiting sooooo long knowing its just sitting in my study. -
So I have a sager 9870 with the non mobile 980 graphics card. Received my consumer oculus rift and it doesn't work.
I keep getting a error in the oculus diagnostic app that there's not enough bandwidth for the required video mode.
Basically the picture in the headset goes blank for a second about every 5 seconds.
Oculus has said the hmdi cable needs plugged directly into the graphics card which is not possible in this computer.
The adapters for mini display and usb3.1 are not supported. Though I have heard one story of them working.
So as far as this rig actually being able to run VR in stock configuration with the stock HDMI port... Anyone done it?
The folks at oculus are "looking into it" with no resolution in sight or estimated. The people at LPC are also going to look into it.
But if no one has actually been able to run the new consumer VR headsets on this computer due to the HDMI setup then I'd really question the advertising of this as VR ready.
I paid $3500 for a VR laptop. I'm dismayed that the way the HDMI port is set up may make it impossible to run VR except for one or two anecdotal unsupported work around that cost extra money in adapters and may or may not work and for those that it does work may not work with future updates.
Has ANYONE actually gotten VR to run on their 980 graphics card with the provided connections on the rig? -
I'm Ok with mine being delayed a few days cos at least I still have laptop to use in the meantime.

@GTVEVO is using the Rift without trouble on this system:

HTC used it for their 'VIVE Roadshow', so no problem there either.

Just deciding between the FHD or 4K AUO G-Sync panels at my local reseller (Metabox).
Any thoughts on this? Specifically, how does the 4K panel downscale for 1080p gaming? Notebookcheck seems to indicate it does so nicely - but it's always better to hear it from actual owners
I am also quite happy with a 60hz cap.Georgel likes this.
