If you still want to use Wincrap X, go for 950Pro. Or wait a bit. New faster and bigger NVMe drives is on their way. Samsung 950 Pro isn't a option if you use Win 7. The same with all NVMe drives if you prefer Win 7.

hmmm.....the nvidia driver is crashing at stock on a few games like forza....no idea why or if it's because of me overclocking?
could it just be a game issue or have i damaged the 980 already? -
Forza always crashes though since it a piece of WUI crud. I doubt you've damaged your card.
What other games are crashing ? -
Try 365.19.. Not had a single game crash on it..
-
Blops 3 crashed once and overwatch crashed twice.

Use DDU to clean the old drivers and install 368.25 (or the one Mr. Fox was talking about) . Mirrors edge should have issues running on .25 instead of .39.
-
I dunno why 3 games crash really.
Sent from my SM-N910G using Tapatalk -
Drivers mess things up sometimes. Just please do a driver cleanup using DDU from Safe Mode and then re install them.
-
I always do.

Alright, then next step would be to keep an eye on the temperatures when the crash happens. Before starting the game, just have HWInfo running and check the max temps when the crash occurs.
Also Im assuming you dialed the clocks back to stock ? -
Crashes happen in like the 40s and 50s.
Sent from my SM-N910G using Tapatalk -
Ah, good chance then its either something else conflicting with the drivers. Since its happening in almost every game im assuming? Are you noticing any weird dots or artifacts when in game?
Can you check the current clocks are for the GPU and the Memory ? -
No artefacts and everything is at the stock speeds.

Then its either something to do with the drivers or something conflicting with the drivers.
I would roll back to something 3-4 versions old and see if it still happens. -
-
Since purchase my 870 has hard reset itself a few times. Ever happen to anyone else?
This is over a few months. -
It did happen to me a few times. This seems to be related to hibernation or screen shutdown.
Have you undervolted the 6700k? -
Nope all stock.
-
Usually when does it happen? Is it random or while playing games ?
Could be anything from Over heating to falty PSU, OR a bad component. -
It's completely random. I can leave my machine on for days or a week and nothing will happen, though I frequently restart due to installing software.
It happened during regular use the first time, surfing the web.
It's happened after closing the lid one time, and re-opening.
Then the other night it apparently carked it according to the event viewer.
So it's only happened about 3 or 4 times, but it's still strange and a pain in the arse.ole!!! likes this. -
That is weird. So no BSOD, just a flat out restart?
Might to crack it open and make sure everything is plugged in properly and snug. -
I tried running prime95 until tjmax and it was fine.
-
I'd rather not, since I paid for extra warranty and that will (probably?) void it.
I asked them what they thought, but they just suggested I try an older graphics driver. But it happened anyway the other night, so yeah. Not that, I think.
Customer service guy hasn't gotten back to me since I reported that instance. -
Can you check in the power settings "Turn off hard disk after"?...mine was initially set to 1min (don't know why), I set it to never and the problem disappeared.
-
Cool, I've changed it, and we'll see what happens.
-
Well I've gotten my P870DM-G back from being repaired at the factory. The drop from my backpack to the concrete driveway didn't do any physical damage to any of the components as far as they could tell. However, the sudden impact caused CLU to fly off one of the 980M dies and it landed onto the GPU board causing a non-damaging short and that was determined to be the reason why I couldn't get video out. The tech said that it took them two hours and two cans of cleaner to remove all traces of CLU from the board and GPU. Evidently I applied a bit too much of it, but I didn't think I had.
FYI he did mention in his first email correspondence that the use of liquid metal thermal interface material would void the warranty. However, they discovered after cleaning the GPU that there was an overheating problem with one of the 980Ms that they evidently determined was a pre-existing condition to the PEBCAK drop incident. This WAS covered under warranty and they replaced the defective 980M at no charge. Yeah! -

As a heads up, if many of you are looking for storage increases (I know I am) Amazon Prime Day is going on. I received an exclusive deal (might only be for me, but then again I don't think I had it in my wishlist or anything) for a SD Ultra II 960 GB SSD:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M8ABHVQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The deal lowered the price to $164.99 (USD), $178.60 with tax. Talk about a sweet deal! -

That is a pretty nice deal for that size of SSD. Thanks for spreading the word.

Edit: double post. sorry. just so excited about prime day, right? feel free to delete.

So i bought this laptop from xmg
Good guys
But when it came had quite a few white pixels on the screen and graphics hardware could not be detected
So they said they 'Our technicians have replaced the whole barebone unit.'
What does this mean?
Also what do you guus think of this laptop? -

It's good -
Can anyone provide a 3d scan of the cpu heatsink? I'm going to see if it's possible to manufacture a delid direct die contact version
-
That will need more than just the exact measurements of the heat sink. And even then there are lot of factors involved. There a lot of things that prevent the heat sink from making even contact.
Then there are the Power Phases and MOSFETs that need to be cooled and are present right next the processor socket.
Also the heat sink is mounted using spring screws so that the mounting pressure is not too much.CaerCadarn likes this. -
I know a person who does precision metalwork, but I need the exact specs of the heatsink to actually be able to do this. -
Well if you can get hold of one, that would be the best bet. They aren't too expensive.
I don't think any one here has access to a 3D Scanner. I had access to one at work, but its been locked up in our NDA project room.
I can send you my extra one , but only if I get dibs on the new heatsink. -

FYI:
Apparently the GTX 1060 Desktop/Laptop GPU has 90% of the processing power of the GTX 980 Desktop/Laptop GPU, at just 65 Watts:
http://www.purepc.pl/notebooki/geforce_gtx_1060_mobile_pelny_uklad_gp106_trafi_do_laptopow
(Use Google Translate)
The only difference between the GeForce GTX 1060, for laptops and desktop version, will be reduced core speed. 1405 MHz instead of 1506 MHz in the basic mode, and 1671 MHz instead of 1709 MHz GPU Boost 3.0
So, keeping fingers crossed for an MXM variant to plug into our Clevos! -
Its not that close to the 980 :
http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9224955
With moderate 24/7 OC the 980 go way ahead.
And 99% chance, the 1060's for laptops will be a soldered solution and not MXM.
Also why would you want to sully this high end system by using a 1060 in it? 1060 OF ALL CARDS bro!??Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
A 65w graphics in P870 with mod extra pipes you will be the king of Overclock the 1060
Spartan@HIDevolution and bloodhawk like this. -

If you went from being able to have one to two and got a good deal It could make sense I suppose. However it really depends on availability, cost and compatibility of any new cards.bloodhawk likes this. -
remember that pascal doesn't scale as well with voltage compared to maxwell, and maxwell is already trash in the voltage scaling department
either that, or before you hit the thermal limits for the silicon you'll blow the VRMs off -
They should sell for under $300 like the desktop parts do since they're playing this game now.
-
pathfindercod Notebook Virtuoso
It seems to cost more when they make stuff smaller.
Well atleast they charge us more. -
If they used better parts for reliability then sure, but tend to skimp on quality components.
-
like the vrms...
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The desktop skimps far more on the VRM really compared to what the chips can do.
With the 980M having 3 rather than 6 chips was more efficient for stock while only being a limit when running at the max the chip could manage. It also kept the ram clocking higher due to lower EMI.
