Well the Nvidia cores have been using less power, but I do agree the desktop phases were stripped down a little too much for my liking.

What else should I uninstall from the PC that was preloaded that I don't need? Anyone use the sound blaster EQ app.

Anyone recommend a decent antivirus that has a low footprint compared to Avast?

I don't like Sound Blaster EQ app. I could never find a way to stop it applying EQs to everything. I do some music production from time to time and need that filth off.

I am just trying to figure out what might be causing some fps drops in a few games. I might uninstall it since I don't even actively use the app.

It did have some nice EQs for gaming and movies. But there's window's trying to control sound, realtek, then this.. Ahh too much bloat trying to get a piece of the action. Yeah I uninstalled it pretty quick smart.

I don't install the SoundBlaster crap or the Clevo Command Center. Both are worthless bloatware IMHO. I'd prefer the LED keyboard was white to match the power button and status lights, but I would prefer to live with the blue than install Command Center. Maybe someday a Clevo whiz will come up with a third-party utility for LED controls like what @Rotary Heart did for Alienware Command Center.

I don't use any antivirus software any more, but I hear Bitdefender isn't too bad and NOD32 is supposed to be pretty light. Brother @Phoenix is always testing different security software, so maybe he can chime in.

Are you running NVCP in Adaptive or High performance power management mode? If you're using Adaptive might want to try High performance instead and see if that helps. I haven't noticed any similar behavior and I always use the High performance power management mode on the Global settings tab.

Oh yeah, LOL. That drove me nuts for a while. And, so did G-STINK turning itself back on automatically. Newer drivers seems to have cured that. And, with the @j95 driver mod the software crap for battery boost doesn't even get installed. The folders containing that piece of trash gets deleted before installing.

latest AV test reports by Phoenix:

    - NOD32= light, great security, 0 false positives BUT, it has a component called HTTP scanner which causes web browsing, torrent downloads to slow down. Additionally, my VPN.AC keeps randomly disconnecting because of it. I reported it to ESET 2 weeks ago but have yet to hear from them.

    - Kaspersky Antivirus = Light as a feather nowadays BUT 3 reactivations and your license is blacklisted so that's not an option for me since I format a lot especially if there is a new Windows build.

    - Avira Antivirus Pro = very light as well, 0 FPs, does not interfere with you system or have any adverse effects. Recommended

    - Avast Antivirus Pro = not the lightest of the bunch but still ranking 4th in terms of lightness according to the AV Comparatives test. Full of bloat though, I custom install it and only select the file shield component. It hasn't been doing great lately on AV Comparatives Real World tests, but it gets the job done. This would be my 2nd recommendation after Avira. Don't forget to go to settings > general > Privacy, then opt out of the "participate in data sharing" option

    - Windows Defender = Very heavy, I feel my system is very laggy with it. Few FP's here and there as well. Signature updates come through Windows updates so it gets annoying every time you run Windows update to see the signatures updating. Not recommended.

    - Norton Security = one of the most bloated security solutions out there. File Shredder, Automatic System optimization (like defragging), buttons in the UI that are not part of your license, like an online data safe which if you click he button, only prompts you to upgrade to a higher suite. don't like this built in advertisement of other features. I bought what I want. Thank you. Leave me the heck alone.

Then comes its biggest nuisance, the Norton Toolbar which if you don't install, you will get nagged about it randomly while you are working on something via a popup on your screen!

    - Bitdefender Antivirus = I would rather get infected by a virus and not run that POS AV which is one of the best in terms of protection, and super light BUT the program itself is buggy as heck since years and now comes with a software updater, PC optimizer, and every bloatware you can imagine. Even in the paid version. this is not different than installing a PUP.

That's right. I said Bitdefender but meant Kaspersky. That was the last security suite I had. I used it for a while and I stopped using it. It was decent, but all of them are annoying to me, LOL.

Thank you for providing this useful info, bro. I knew I could count on you. :D

I use it. I actually like it, when set to music, through my old Beyer Dynamic DT880's.
    Won't listen whihtout it now.

When I did run non windows defender, I liked bitdefender.

But in general, if i'm worried about security (right now i'm not) I just run HitmanPro.ALERT, from what I've read about it, it's more useful than anti virus, but I found it to be really aggravating after a while, so i just run windows defender.. and I don't notice any slowdown.

I run my LED's set to a nice green.

Do you mean G-Sync? I only call it G-STINK because I don't care for it and prefer to have it disabled at all times. Sorry if my slang was confusing... not intentional.

Battery Boost is a gimmick NVIDIA added to help laptops run games in a gimped mode using battery power. It is part of GeForce Experience and only works on single-GPU systems. It will not work with SLI. The latest desktop driver mod for Alienware and Clevo notebooks by @j95 has special INF tweaks and all of the non-essential folders are deleted as part of the mod. You only get GPU drivers, HD Audio driver, NVIDIA Control Panel and PhysX installed. All of the extra bloatware and performance killing stuff never gets installed.

I am wondering why doom drops into the 60fps range sometimes when all the benches I've seen show it around 100s on average.

setting the gpu to max performance just leaves the GPU at the base clock while in desktop mode. not sure why.

I uninstalled the Clevo Command Center because it was causing a conflict with my mouse/touchpad detection. Nothing major though - whenever I unplugged a mouse, the touchpad would not re-enable for whatever reason. It kept thinking a mouse was still plugged in when it wasn't. As soon as I uninstalled CCC, it worked fine again. It may just be an issue with my own personal laptop though. Not sure if anyone else had that issue or not. But it's honestly nothing to worry about.

CCC is mostly used for changing the color patterns of the LEDS in the Keyboard and behind the monitor. Hotkey stuff. Although, you can use it to boost your GPU clocks too I think and it acts as a "lite" control panel for some of the laptop stuff, but you can access that all in the Windows CP anyway or right in the VBIOS.

I just use built-in Windows 10 Defender AV and Firewall for the basic real-time protections. Haven't had any problems. Most AV programs are crowd-sourcing detections and definitions now, so they almost all work the same.

Malwarebytes is a good stand-alone scanner if you want something to thoroughly scan files on-demand (right-click + scan), rather than in real-time. I always scan compressed downloads with that even if I have another real time scanner installed.

you should use nvidia inspector "multi display power saving" and at the same time set gpu to max performance in nvcp

you can manually set at what load % the GPU driver is allowed to idle the card at p0, else it will force the card to run at p8 idle

in other note, does anyone have an updated list of prema partner shops? I think the one on his webpage is outdated

testing a bit of doom with an overclock and let the game run uncapped and it's peaking at 310 watts of power usage at times but never higher.

Dial in your target clock and then reduce the voltage in steps until it's unstable then raise it a little to give a margin ;)

Sorry for what may seem a silly question but i'm a newbie...

By the way, my EVOC P870 with GTX 980 will have both PREMA Bios.

Is there any way to upgrade these Bios in the future, if needed ( Whom to ask ? ).

    Thanks for the answers...

Use EVGA's Precision X16 utility or even Nvidia Custom Res under Nvidia System Panel.

It should be quite self explaining.

hmmm...tried to install eset smart security and during the install it caused a BSOD which then turned into a repair boot loop. but short of having to reinstall windows i just ran a system restore and the only thing i had to do was reinstall the nvidia drivers - even ran ddu just in case.

so i won't be buying that bit of software any time soon!

will check my BIOS. i have the balanced power plan active.

edit: no idea what to look for.

oddly enough, it does not see my 950 pro in the BIOS but windows sees it. switching to high perf fixes the cpu not boosting. dunno why the bios can't see the 950 pro but windows can.

Weird. There is something off about your Windows install. Me and a bunch of friends are using NOD32 on our P870's for months now and no issues. I have been using NOD32 for years, never had any issues.

I really would suggest just doing a fresh Windows install, since you were having other issues as well. It will give you a clean slate and maybe even narrow down the causes.

I might do that in a few months. I still don't get why the 950 pro won't show up in the bios though.

Because there is a no hardware nVME controller or something. It will show up in the boot menu though when you hit F7 at startup.

Odd cos it shows in Windows 10 just fine so i don't know what controller it is using and therefore I won't see the full speed of the drive.

Make sure you install the Samsung nVME drivers as well. The drive works at pretty much full specs.
