You can see the variants of Pascal cards here: https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/10163-pascal-mxm-p-series-refresh/

Eurocom flog the MSI 1070 which is smaller and has no additional power connector - or SLI :(

This chinese dude cut up his chassis to fit in the *Clevo* 1070 - the ones that don't fit in the P870DM, which caused all the nerdrage a few months ago.

There are two 4 pins on the P870DM board (the only possible explanation for this is that it was intended for 980 DT SLI which never made it to retail). These are the J_DC1 and J_DC2 I mentioned earlier, on pages 72 and 73 of the P870DM service manual. The connector for each goes
    4 PWR
    3 PWR
    2 GND
    1 GND

so you cannot simply plug these into the Clevo card since the board end of the connector as per p70 of P870DM3 SM is:
    1 PWR
    2 PWR
    3 PWR
    4 PWR
    5 GND
    6 GND
    7 GND
    8 GND
9 CABLE_DET <== note I think from the grainy pictures I can find of this cable end I can actually see ten wires meaning it's a loop back into the motherboard connector that's why its only 8 pins at the card end

==> this chinese dude I think has his 4 pins from his motherboard end connected into where 5-6-7-8 end up in the card.

TL;DR you could make a combiner cable 2 x 4pin => 8 pins but you'd need to rewire it and NOT JUST PLUG THEM IN NEXT TO EACH OTHER

CABLE_DET means cable detect. It's irrelevant to using it in the DM if what you're saying is accurate.

Or He do it to try fit second for sli only?

I will be realy happy to have one 1080 if will be no possible to have 1070 in sli working

It comes down to programmed TDP at that point and also how far they can go when unlocked (and for how long).

Yes the core position has moved but the new heatsinks may fit at that point.

My question is and I have been trying to get to the bottom of this is that if the designed TDP of the 1070 is just a bit more than the 980M through the MXM interface then do you really need the additional power and would it make a difference? There's a theory that you don't and the external power plug was just left there because clevo was reusing the 1080 board with the 1070 die to cut costs.

Hopefully I can do a performance test when my laptop comes back hopefully before mid December.

There's new heatsinks coming out for the gen 1?

It's certainly nice to have from a power regulation and EC programming stand point. It would allow the TDP to be higher.

Depending on the game for the founders edition that ranges between 1720mhz and 1820mhz.

Nah, I was referring to the non founders edition - just the reference 1070 clocks. Boost clock difference is 38MHz.

I would simply target those actual boost clocks, see what you are getting and compare it then, it may take more than the +35mhz but sets a nice goal.

4K screen in. A few teething problems but all to do with windows lol

Screen also came with a cable already attached! That's either a bonus, or a waste of $80 depending on how you look at it

Also liquid metalled it. Not much improvement so far since the bloody fans are temp controlled so they just end up quieter and it stays only a few C cooler without Fn+1. Aida64 maxes mid 70s. Don't want to push it either, I'm running slight underclock on the GPUs as it's on a single 330W until the joiner comes.

Aliexpress doesn't take visa debit cards cos I tried to get a cable last year and it kept rejecting my cards.

The instructions for it look so messy that I'd rather get someone else to do it.

Which is why you learn on something old and cheap first so it doesn't matter if you hurt the laptop :)

Look at a low rate credit card, for the $20-$30 a year in fees it's worth it for the international purchases and also the ability to charge back if you get ripped off (which *touches wood* I've never had to do)

I've also now got an extra cable and shipping would be as low as $2 for a large letter interstate up to NSW

At that point though it starts to make $ sense to flog it off and get a DM2 with 1070 SLI. Warranty, plus no modding hassle.

the DM2 also has a 6700K so it's not a real big jump on the CPU side. maybe when they release a model the 7700k or the 8700k i7s then it might reconsider.

but right now i am just talking, dreaming big. the P870DM-G still has life in it.

Yes it's basically the exact same laptop except the MXMs are wider apart.

Anyone upgrading a Skylake to Kaby Lake is an idiot, sorry not sorry.

I was just thinking if you spend 2k on new GPUs you may as well consider selling it as a unit for 2k and buying a dm2 1070 SLI for 4k. Rough figures.

Except the non-SLI version has a bypass wire to allow it to be detected in a clevo laptop and since there's not much of a difference.... or even zero that bypass wire would still apply.

that's what i want to do but i can't find where to get the connectors, the tools and instructions to do it.

i wonder if it'll be easier to just solder some ribbon cable directly to the cards? wouldn't it be just a case of connecting the corresponding pins to each other?

Getting the right pitch and double layered could be quite tricky. Otherwise it could work with fine enough soldering.

This is a solution but not easier, you will have to use a scope while soldering one by one.
If you had the connector part, i think fixing it its like reflowing a bga, but easier.

I'm about to upgrade all of the drives in my little monster (I'm such a memory hog). I also may do a repaste of LM because I've noticed the CPU temp jumping to 85 at idle (I have been moving and using this thing everywhere).

check your vents and clear them of dust as dust build up can cause the CPU temp to go up. thermal paste and sufficient coverage might help also but do the easy stuff first.
