I have already taken it a part and it is very clean. Plus I knew something was up with the CPU paste when the GPU stays icy cold at idle (around 31c).

at least it can be ruled out!

Check mouser.

yeah ES and QS versions had the wire on it for testing. -
very curious as to how easy it is to procure and fix the sli version?
edit: anyone ordered from the taobao link? i feel a bit cautious about it even though they have 96 cards.Last edited: Dec 4, 2016 -
@thegh0sts
Bro I don't think upgrading to the 1070 from your 980 is a wise idea. I was going to do that myself, buy the 1070 and sell off the 980. Yet I did a lot of research and the upgrade cost (around $400 if I can sell the 980 for a good price) doesn't justify the 15 to 20% gain at stock. With a modest OC on the 980, I can cut down the gain to 10%.hmscott, Papusan, bloodhawk and 1 other person like this. -
You're a bit late to the party.

The lack of response from metabox about my laptop's repair is starting to become worrisome.

Did you call then? No point emailing, usually a call is much quicker and forces them to give an answer!

i buzzed them. i'm going to plan my weekend based on what they say.

Question: would it be worth buying a barebones DM2, transfer the RAM and CPU from the DM-G into the DM2, and try to sell the DM-G as a barebones?
i would think the DM-G would have some interest with a prema BIOS and a 1070 + 24GB of RAM. it would just be missing a CPU. -
Rather See if you can sell your P870DM-G complete, but with 980 for an ok price. Sell your 1070 sepatate. Then buy a new complete machine.TBoneSan, hmscott, bennyg and 1 other person like this.

I agree, I think there is not much market for a separate Clevo 980DTPapusan likes this.

The problem is if clevo decides to push the goal posts. I might buy extra parts just in case. Would still like to see SLI versions of the MSI 1070 to be available.

Don't the tab and ridge preclude you from using two in the 870DM anyways?
-
Sell your machine with 980 if the price is right and acceptable. Gtx 1070 should be easy to sell and will give you even more money back. Go from there
-
I might wait for a formal announcement of the GTX 11 series.

The 980 is still excellent for 1080p gaming after all.

After a day of playing phone tag I managed to get a hold of the person at Metabox who is assessing my laptop. The good news is the GPU and motherboard are covered by warranty but the GPU heatsink is not.
So if there's any charges it's not massive.
Edit: if that's the case I might buy the secondary heatsink, SLI cable, and the power converter adapter.

yes and no. yes because it's wider than the standard MXM 3.0B dimensions and the nub/tab may overlap. go back a few pages to see my initial rough diagram of two MSI 1070s.
no, because the plastic frame that's between the ram and battery can be removed and reshaped with a dremel. the issue is more to do with the tab overlapping with the master GPU. it doesn't seem to be a big overlap (most likely 1mm or less) so it's possible to shave off part of the tab to get it to fit and fit nicely.
the problem now is finding two MSI 1070s with SLI connectors. i believe @woodzstack is on the case.Dr. AMK likes this. -

Yeah, the overlap between the cards was my primary concern. I eyeballed the dimensions with my 980s from my GT80S and my P870DM before I sold it and it looked like it wouldn't fly.
-
You won't know for sure till you actually do it. I hope shaving a bit off the slave gpu won't be super bad for the gpu.

That's a really bad assumption. In general, electronics do not undergo graceful degradation when you start lopping off components and/or cutting traces. If you really want to try it, go nuts, but don't be too surprised if you end up with an $800 paperweight.

we're talking about shaving a very small amount of the PCB here, not big chunks (as the word "lopping" implies). i am aware there's a risk to doing so. but the images i used have a slight warp to them so we may get lucky and the overlap doesn't exist.
here's the image i made again to show how much of an overlap there is. as i said the images have a bit of a warp in them even though it looks very orthogonal/straight on. so there's a chance that the overlap is there and a possibility of it not being there. if it's there you shave a bit, test the card to see if it's still functional.
-
i m sure you can overlap it without issue. if i was you, i will still put some kind of antistatic paper in this little overlap between both.
Something else to say,i saw threads with 1070n in a alienware 17 2013 and a p375sma. Both didnt have that wire... -
once we're able to get SLI versions of the card then we'll find out.
-
Nice I hope everything runs smoothly. What was the damage$?
-
I can't seem to work that site.

Haha love the URL there.
Youre putting these in P377SM yes? -
The card is like nearly $1000 a piece.

No damage, for the price he want to show me its good^^. i also do that when i sell a gpu.
-
Yep, will put it in my p377sma. i saw in a chinese forum someone doing it in his p375sma.
i paid 725$. After will be another 25$ for dhl. i just baught one, i tell him i need to see if it's working then i will jump to SLI
-
he send me this to show when i ask if its sli edition...
It's 2 gpu, if u using smartphone u cant load the picture its weird^^ -
Sorry.. 'what's the damage' is another way of saying 'how much'.
-
Allright! well 725$ with local shipping + taxes visa. Then i guess 25$ with Dhl to my location..hope it gonna be fast because next week i am out of town :s
-
That's half reasonable. Well done my friend.

It depends what the supplier is asking for them but the mid 700s is about right for the clevo cards.Dr. AMK likes this. -
We didn't specify the currency. I was talking AUD and not USD.
Also, eurocom is saying the msi SLI 1070 doesn't exist.
Sent from my SM-T560NU using Tapatalk -
Lol, guess the SLI 1070 GT73 and GT83 don't exist either.
-
The SLI is a lie.

It's like the cake?
